How James Holmes Went From Shy Nerd To Accused Cold-Blooded Killer

ASHLEY LUTZ

Jul. 25, 2012, 6:08 PM

James Holmes, the 24-year-old accused of gunning down dozens of people in a Colorado movie theater last week, went from being a "quiet" doctoral student to the most infamous man in America.

Here's what we know about how he might have gotten there:

Holmes was adopted as a child and raised in San Diego, Calif., the New York Post reported, citing the father of a victim, who had in turn said he got that information from the police.

His mother is a registered nurse and his father is a senior scientist at FICO, the company that provides credit scores, according to local paper U-T San Diego.

He has a younger sister, Chris, according to USA Today.

His elementary classmates remember Holmes as a well-behaved kid who excelled at computer programming and sports. He got "picked for flag football first, because he was fast," one classmate told The Californian.

He dabbled in soccer and cross-country in high school. One classmate said he had a small group of friends who played video games and told the New York Times he was "nice and sweet."

College academics came easily to Holmes, who studied at the University of California. One former classmate told the Washington Post: “He didn’t even have to take notes or anything. He would just show up to class, sit there, and around test time he would always get an A.”

In college, he worked as a camp counselor for children. He was in charge of about 10 campers. One of his former coworkers told TMZ he was a nice guy who hung out with the rest of the staff and never gave anyone alarm.

In the summer of 2006, he scored an internship at the prestigious Salk Institute that may have raised some red flags. His supervisor told the Christian Science Monitor he was an unusually bad intern, "odd" and "stubborn."

But he still graduated from University of California at the top of his class, according to USA Today.

After that, he enrolled in a neuroscience doctoral program at University of Colorado.

Experts have suggested he might have had a psychotic break after failing to meet the expectations of his father, who has a degree from Stanford and a successful career, the Daily Mail reported.

From here, the picture gets more disturbing: Holmes was always alone, according to reports from his neighbors in Colorado cited by The New York Times.

He blared techno music beginning at midnight, playing the same song over and over, a neighbor told the Huffington Post.

He started to show interest in joining a gun range, but was rejected after the leader heard his bizarre, "demonic" voicemail message.

He also allegedly slept with several prostitutes, even reviewing them for a website, TMZ reported. One woman who claimed Holmes was her client said he was "really nice."

Holmes also may have had profiles on AdultFriendFinder and Match.com. The profiles said people noticed his "soul-penetrating eyes" and asked if women would visit him in prison.

Weeks before the shooting, he failed an important exam at University of Colorado and bought one of the assault rifles he'd allegedly use in the shooting.

He allegedly spent months building an arsenal, possibly from the $26,000 in federal grants he received for graduate school.

Now, reports have emerged that Holmes sent a notebook full of his plans last week to a University of Colorado psychiatrist. It went unopened until Monday.

Just two days before the shooting, he drank at a local bar. Another patron told KCNC-TV in Denver he seemed intelligent and had a swagger.

When he went into the theater, witnesses said he morphed into a monster, selecting his victims. “He would shout, ‘What are you doing? I said stand up!’ And he would pick people up. I saw him stand over someone. I just see hair and him holding the shirt and — boom!”

Microsoft Announces Availability of Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Posted February 29, 2012 By

BARCELONA, Spain — Feb. 29, 2012 — Microsoft Corp. today announced the availability of the Windows 8 Consumer Preview — the next milestone of the Windows operating system. This latest preview will be made available for download starting today at http://preview.windows.com. The Windows 8 Consumer Preview offers a more robust experience for testing the world’s most popular operating system and is available to the widest range of people yet following the initial release of the Windows 8 Developer Preview late last year. The Developer Preview received more than 3 million downloads.

“With Windows 8, we reimagined the different ways people interact with their PC and how to make everything feel like a natural extension of the device, whether using a Windows 8 tablet, laptop or all-in-one,” said Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live Division at Microsoft. “The Windows 8 Consumer Preview brings a no-compromises approach to using your PC.”

Show me one. I'll ask him.
If we were serious about money,
we'd quit being hired hands.
Handymen, Earl. We are handymen.
We should quit this job...
...and find ourselves
some real employment.
Are you going to give up
all this personal freedom?
I don't know.
Freeway!
What's on the agenda for today?
- It's garbage day.
- Man! Already?
What's Nestor paying us?
$50. And that's $47 more than we got.
Burt and Heather's place is closer.
Let's do their linoleum today...
...and the garbage tomorrow.
Nestor's not home tomorrow.
We don't dig today, we're not paid.
Damn it, Valentine, you never plan ahead.
You never take the long view.
Here it is Monday...
...and I'm already thinking of Wednesday.
It is Monday, right?
Who the hell's that?
That's not the grad student?
- No. He graduated. Must be the new one.

Profit? Fiscal year?
Beware, my dear Zilkov. The virus of capitalism is highly infectious.
Soon, you'll be lending money out at interest!
You must try, Comrade Zilkov, to cultivate a sense of humour.
There's nothing like a good laugh now and then to lighten the burdens of the day.
Tell me, Raymond. Do you remember murdering Mavole and Lembeck?
I beg your pardon, sir?
Mavole and Lembeck.
The men who were lost on the patrol.
Can you recall what happened to them?
Yes, sir.
It was a very clear action for a night action.
Captain Marco sent up some low flares,
so it was easy to see what was happening.
Bobby Lembeck got separated to the left.
Mavole went after him.
By the time he reached him, the enemy had a fix on the position.
They were killed instantly by a high mortar shell.
I don't think they ever knew what hit 'em.
Do you realise, comrade, the implications of the weapon
that has been placed at your disposal?
You may remove your head bandage, Raymond.

Nor will he, of course, have any reason to fear being caught.

Microsoft settles license lawsuit

United Press International

SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp. said late Monday it has agreed to pay Seattle Computer Products Inc. nearly $1 million in an out-of-court settlement, ending jury deliberations in a $60 million licensing fraud lawsuit.

Microsoft, one of the nation's largest software manufacturers, will purchase back the seven license agreements it had with Seattle Computer, including any license for Microsoft operating systems products and high-level languages.

Seattle Computers, which has been virtually shut down, sued Microsoft over a 1981 agreement that Seattle Computers said was not intended to give Microsoft exclusive use of its program design and subsequent improvements.

Aurora suspect James Holmes was buying guns, dropping out of graduate school

By Pete Williams, Bill Dedman and NBC News staff

Updated Friday 9:25 p.m. ET: James Eagan Holmes, suspected of carrying out the Colorado movie theater shooting while wearing an outfit of black ballistic gear, was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate student in neuroscience who started buying his four weapons legally in May, about the time his grades fell and he began the process of dropping out of school.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said Holmes, born Dec. 13, 1987, is the man who is believed to have killed at least 12 people early Friday at a midnight showing of the new Batman movie in Aurora, a suburb of Denver. At least 58 other people were injured, nearly all of them by bullets but a few in other ways in the chaos, Oates said.

What are you doing here?

The American Presidency Project

Barack Obama

XLIV President of the United States: 2009 - present

Executive Order 13503 - Establishment of the White House Office of Urban Affairs

February 19, 2009

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, and in order to take a coordinated and comprehensive approach to developing and implementing an effective strategy concerning urban America, it is hereby ordered as follows:

Section 1. Policy. About 80 percent of Americans live in urban areas, and the economic health and social vitality of our urban communities are critically important to the prosperity and quality of life for Americans. Vibrant cities spawn innovation, economic growth, and cultural enrichment through the businesses, universities, and civic, cultural, religious, and nonprofit institutions they attract. Forward-looking policies that encourage wise investment and development in our urban areas will create employment and housing opportunities and make our country more competitive, prosperous, and strong. In the past, insufficient attention has been paid to the problems faced by urban areas and to coordinating the many Federal programs that affect our cities. A more comprehensive approach is needed, both to develop an effective strategy for urban America and to coordinate the actions of the many executive departments and agencies whose actions impact urban life.

Sec. 2. Establishment. There is established within the Executive Office of the President the White House Office of Urban Affairs (the "Office").

Sec. 3. Functions. The principal functions of the Office are, to the extent permitted by law:

(a) to provide leadership for and coordinate the development of the policy agenda for urban America across executive departments and agencies;

(b) to coordinate all aspects of urban policy;

(c) to work with executive departments and agencies to ensure that appropriate consideration is given by such departments and agencies to the potential impact of their actions on urban areas;

(d) to work with executive departments and agencies, including the Office of Management and Budget, to ensure that Federal Government dollars targeted to urban areas are effectively spent on the highest-impact programs; and

(e) to engage in outreach and work closely with State and local officials, with nonprofit organizations, and with the private sector, both in seeking input regarding the development of a comprehensive urban policy and in ensuring that the implementation of Federal programs advances the objectives of that policy.

Sec. 4. Coordination. In performing its functions, the Office shall work closely with all relevant executive departments and agencies, and offices and councils within the Executive Office of the President, including but not limited to:

(a) the Department of the Treasury;

(b) the Department of Justice;

(c) the Department of Commerce;

(d) the Department of Labor;

(e) the Department of Health and Human Services;

(f) the Department of Housing and Urban Development;

(g) the Department of Transportation;

(h) the Department of Energy;

(i) the Department of Education; and

(j) the Environmental Protection Agency.

Sec. 5. Administration. (a) The Office may work with established or ad hoc committees, task forces, and interagency groups.

(b) The Office shall have a staff headed by the Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of Urban Affairs (Director). The Director shall report jointly to the Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Liaison and to the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy. The Office shall have such staff and other assistance as may be necessary to carry out the provisions of this order.

(c) All executive departments and agencies shall cooperate with the Office and provide such information, support, and assistance to the Office as the Director may request, to the extent permitted by law.

Sec. 6. General Provisions. (a) Nothing in this order shall be construed to impair or otherwise affect:

(i) authority granted by law to a department, agency, or the head thereof; or

(ii) functions of the Director of the Office of Management and Budget relating to budgetary, administrative, or legislative proposals.

(b) This order shall be implemented consistent with applicable law and subject to the availability of appropriations.

(c) This order is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.

BARACK OBAMA

The White House,

But it will get worse and worse,

or on the side of the Thomas Jordans of this country.
I will go with you to Washington, tomorrow, if you like,
and I will show you proof that this man stands for evil,
that he is evil.
That his whole life is devoted to undermining
everything that you and I and every freedom-minded American...
She won, of course.
She always does.
I could never beat her.
L-I still can't.
I wrote a letter...
Or she wrote it and I signed it - I can't even remember which.
It was a terrible, vile, disgusting letter.
The next day I enlisted in the army.
I n... I never saw her again.
God knows, Ben, I...
I'm not loveable,
but I loved her.
I did love her.
I do love her.
Come on, kid. It's time for you to call it a night.
Come on.
So this lousy brother-in-law of mine,
I say to him "You think you're a poker player?"
- "You ain't no poker player." - Beer, please.
So I says to him "My advice to you,
from the bottom of the heart: Don't play poker."
"If I was you, I'd get myself another line of action."
"Why don't you pass the time by playing a little solitaire?"
Give me a deck of cards, please.
When I get married to my old lady,
I got no idea that this guy comes in the same package,
that it's a package deal,
and for eleven long years, I got this crumb tied around my neck.
And believe me, it's no bargain. You got no idea...
Beer, please.
Sorry I'm late, kid. Got held up in traffic, you know.
So I says to him "Do me a favour."
"Why don't you go and take yourself a cab
and go up to Central Park and go jump in the lake?"
Hey! Raymond!
Raymond!
Get out of there!
What are you doing?!
- Hi, Ben. - What's the matter with you?
I don't know.
I was with you at the bar and you were playing solitaire. Do you remember that?
You bolted out, jumped in a cab, drove here and jumped into the water!

Barcelona

Just after and probably only a minute or a few minutes after I made that last web post the Destiny's Child song "Cater 2 U" started playing on the Comcast song channel I started monitoring about two days ago. That is the R&B channel and the description for that channel specifically mentions Beyonce.

I don't know what "Cater 2 U" is supposed to be about but it makes me feel nostalgic for the summer of 2004, and specifically 27 June 2004, when I completed that Ironman Coeur d'Alene triathlon course in Idaho. I will never again participate in the activity of that racketeering organization unless I am ordered to, and if so then I have to wonder what would be the point, but I long for those days when the world seemed almost normal despite the aggravation around me on a daily basis and the fact that I was in good enough physical condition to complete that course that day. That only real reason this song makes me think about that, other than it is in 2004, and this is trivial, is about the post-race food that was catered and I didn't really stay around for a lot of it anyway. I think about it too because of the element I watched tonight in the 2001 film "Bandits" where Bruce Willis was in the boxing ring and I think about how as a United States Marine in 1994 I was heavily training in that area and of how I always thought of how I could avoid gun battles if I was an adequate pugilist. Writing about it now I think again about thoughts a few weeks ago of an experience I have not written about before of how my theory of fighting with fugitives with my fists was a failure because I stepped into a takedown of a fugitive by a team that failed, while I was supposed to remain in my assigned position on the perimeter, and the fugitive slugged me and took my primary weapon and after I was knocked the ground I had to pull out my backup weapon and kill him before he could use my weapon to kill the other Deputy US Marshals he had fought off.

So anyway, I read more on the topic of that song and I have been trying to remember Barcelona. I spoke and wrote of Barcelona several time times in pre-2005 but I cannot remember much about that now other than I remember making a port of call there in 1989.

My nervous system is certainly all awry right now as I try to write this observation that is, as with it all, ultimately worthless.

Oh yeah, I just found some notes in my journal about Barcelona. I wrote several times, that notes reminded me, of how in Barcelona in November 1989, and that cruise in the Med in 1989, of how I wrote that I spent my time there either as a sailor working as Shore Patrol or when not assigned to Shore Patrol I was evading Shore Patrol.

Recently I thought to purchase a copy of the cruise book for the USS Wainwright CG 28 of the ship's deployment to the Med in 1989 and 1990.

A cruise book is sort of similar to a high school class book in its format. There are photos of the people and the places.

The cruise book was easy to order from the USS Wainwright Veterans website. Presumably anybody can order a copy of it.

Today I got in the mail a CD-ROM that is the images of the pages from that actual cruise book from 1989 and 1990. I am referencing it now as a source for reports I intend to publish now and future.

Looking through it today on my computer I couldn't believe it. There is actually a photo of me in the cruise book. I had heard of them before but I never had a cruise book before.

The part that seems incredible looking at it now is that I just do not recall us having our photos taken for that book.

I guess it's possible, it's very possible that I simply do not now recall such a trivial detail. Another possibility is I was on the security drug during that time.

All the people in the CF Division are familiar, looking there at all our photos on page 24 of the cruise book. The CD-ROM application indicates page 22 but the image indicates page 24.

The faces are familiar but the names I had mostly forgotten.

Ensign Stephens. I remember him. He was an LDO, a former enlisted sailor as I recall. There's Senior Chief Boon.

FC1 Leaverton was nicknamed Doc. Every time I watch the DVD for the 1980 film "The Final Countdown" and there is that enlisted sailor on the radar scope who says "I lost the helo" I think of how his appearance is similar to Leaverton. I don't recall Leaverton's first name. As best I recall he reported on board the ship after I did. I vaguely recall seeing him sitting in his work space in the fire control radar and sitting in front of the radar screen.

In the opening pages of the cruise book is a summary of activity for the ship in previous years and I am referencing the timeframe I was serving onboard. The Wainwright returned 9 July 1988 to Charleston from Persian Gulf deployment. We deployed from Charleston to the Persian Gulf on 11 January 1988. We left for the Mediterranean Sea deployment on 12 October 1989.

Page 67 of the cruise book image has a two-page spread of the USS Wainwright CG-28 Inport Schedule for that Med cruise that began 12 October 1989. There are other listings after Monaco but I have not transcribed them here because Monaco is where I remember leaving the ship to fly back to the United States. So according to that list the ship left Monaco on 04 March 1990. The ship arrived in Monaco on 26 February 1990. I do not recall the day I left the ship but I guess I left on the 28th.

Post update: Something seems wrong with that list. The first listing makes no sense because that is the day the ship deployed. I remember distinctly that Barcelona was our first port call and I remember that because I thought we were going to arrive on the 2nd of November. Not sure of the accuracy of the other listings. Monaco must be accurate, as best I recall, but I don't know.

A Leap Ahead in Word Processing

October 12, 1989 RICHARD O'REILLY RICHARD O'REILLY is director of computer analysis for The Times

The most sophisticated word-processing programs available these days have moved far beyond mere words. They are document processors.

They are designed for production of finely printed pages complete with multiple type styles and sizes, as many graphics as you want, tables of data and multiple column layouts.

They don't offer as much page layout versatility as desktop publishing programs, but they are often actually more convenient to use since you can create, edit and format the documents in one program. With most desktop publishing software, you also need a word processing program to create and edit the text.

The ability to do all that with one program is the strength of the latest version of Microsoft's Word, version 5.0, priced at $450, which emphasizes document production with its list of new features. They include two ways to see on your screen what the final pages will look like.

One method is the "show layout mode" that allows you to see multicolumn layouts such as a newsletter or a screenplay. Text may be entered and edited in this mode, and you aren't required to have a computer that will display graphics to use it.

Incidentally, you can have several types of columns in Word. You can have evenly spaced parallel columns in which each column is a separate body of text, or columns in which the bottom of one column wraps automatically to the top of the next. You can have columns of unequal widths and columns of unequal lengths. The latter is good for scripts in which the name of a character is placed in one column and the dialogue spoken by the character goes into a longer column beside the name.

What you cannot see in the layout mode is the actual appearance of the various type sizes and styles that have been selected for the document.

There is another mode, called "print preview," that shows you the page on the screen just as it will look from the printer. If you have scanned photos or other graphic elements on the page, they will be shown as well. This feature, though, requires a graphics monitor to work.

Another enhancement makes it easier for a team of writers to compile and revise a document. Each can add annotations to the text, where they are treated as footnotes. A special reference code is placed in the body of the text to mark the area being commented upon and the comment is stored at the end of the page. The writer can then rewrite the text taking the comments into account. When the final revision is complete, all of the annotations can be removed with a single command.

If you create documents with fancy features such as headlines, multiple columns, graphic inserts and tables, they can be replicated in future updates or editions because Word controls formatting with a set of instructions stored in a "style sheet." Custom style sheets can be created and saved to define virtually any look that you want to give your documents.

Most lengthy documents start with, or ought to start with, an outline, and Word has outlining built in. It also includes a good thesaurus and spell-checking function.

Word has several kinds of help available. There is context-sensitive help, in which you get instructions pertaining to the task that you are performing. And there is a tutorial providing lessons that may be viewed on screen at any time.

Even though Microsoft is making a big push for graphically oriented software with its Windows program and the OS/2 operating system with Presentation Manager, the latest version of Word remains a text-oriented program. Thus, it is not a Windows application, but it will operate under either DOS or OS/2. Under OS/2, multiple Word editing sessions can run simultaneously. (There is an earlier graphics version of Word for the Macintosh, but it does not match the features of the PC version.)

Word for the PC has a unique look with a three-line menu of program options that sits across the bottom of the screen. Not all of its options are listed on that menu, however. Many functions are assigned to the PC's 10 function keys, often in combination with other keys. Still others are available by pressing the "alt" or "control" keys plus other keys. There are keyboard templates to help guide the user.

Word is a good choice for word processing if you really need to use some of its advance features--spreadsheet linking, multiple columns on a page, index and table of contents creation, footnoting, alphabetical or numerical sorting of lines or items in a data table.

A Leap Ahead in Word Processing

One of the most difficult word-processing tasks is keeping the columns of words and numbers in a table properly aligned while creating and editing the table. Word takes care of that with a variety of tab stops that act as reference point markers within each line of a document. Along with basic tab and decimal tab markers (to align numbers around decimals), Word adds special tabs to align text or numbers flush with the left or right side of the column, or to center it in the column. Special "leader" characters also can be defined so that any or all items in a table will be separated by dotted or dashed lines.

The latest version is a marked improvement over Word 4.0, but some awkwardness remains. For instance, if you enter menu selections in the wrong order, you end up back at the beginning and have to start over.

No doubt it is asking too much to expect a program that is very flexible and has many complex features to also be simple to learn and use well.

But it is fair for buyers to ask themselves whether they need all of the features such a program offers or if a less complex, less capable package will fit their needs.

MICROSOFT WORD 5.0

Probable cause

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In United States criminal law, probable cause is the standard by which persons acting under the color of law has the grounds to obtain a warrant for, or as an exception to the warrant requirements for, making an arrest or conducting a personal or property search, etc. when criminal charges are being considered. It is also used to refer to the standard to which a grand jury believes that a crime has been committed in conjunction with a preponderance of the evidence. This term comes from the Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

"Probable" in this case may relate to actual statistical probability, or to a general standard of common behavior and customs.
