JOHNSON SPACE CENTER, Texas — Endeavour's astronauts connected the first two building blocks of the international space station Sunday, creating a seven-story tower in the shuttle cargo bay.
It was the first time that the Russian-built Zarya control module and the U.S.-made Unity chamber had ever touched. It looked to be a perfect and, hopefully, long-lasting fit.
"We have capture of Zarya," commander Robert Cabana announced the moment the two pieces came together.
"Congratulations to the crew of the good ship Endeavour," replied Mission Control. "That's terrific."
The 240-mile-high construction job began two hours earlier with Nancy Currie's capture of Zarya (Russian for "sunrise") using the shuttle robot arm. "We're halfway home," Cabana said.
Then came the hard part: stacking the two giant cylinders in the cargo bay.
The two station pieces are so big--77 feet from the tip of one to the tip of the other with a combined mass of 70,000 pounds--that Currie and her crew mates had to rely on a computerized vision system and camera views, rather than direct line of sight. This was the first time such a "blind" docking had ever been attempted.
Currie positioned the solar-winged Zarya, still on the end of the shuttle robot arm, several inches directly above Unity.
Once she was sure she had it, Cabana fired Endeavour's thrusters, and the brief burst raised the shuttle and thereby Unity enough for the docking mechanisms on the two station components to snap together.

Astronauts aboard the space shuttle Endeavour have successfully joined the first two components of the International Space Station.
It was the first time that the Russian-built Zarya control module and the made-in-America Unity chamber had ever touched.
And it looked to be a perfect and, hopefully, long-lasting fit.
Sunday's historic space exercise started when shuttle Commander Robert Cabana steered Endeavour to within several feet of the solar-winged Zarya module.
As the spacecraft soared some 240 miles (384 kilometres) above Earth at more than 17-thousand miles-an-hour (272-thousand kph), astronaut Nancy Currie reached out with the shuttle robot arm and gently latched onto it.
Cabana and his crew were ecstatic.
UPSOUND "We have Zarya. We're halfway home for the day."
But the second half of the operation was to be the most difficult - stacking the giant cylinder to the American Unity capsule aboard Endeavour.
That job fell to Currie, the shuttle crane operator who had deftly hoisted and repositioned Unity in the cargo bay on Saturday.
The two station pieces are vast - 77 feet from the tip of one to the tip of the other.
Together they weigh 70-thousand pounds
Currie and her crewmates had to rely on a computerised vision system and camera views, rather than direct line of sight.

The AH-64 Apache was designed to be an extremely tough survivor under combat. The prototype Apache made its first flight in 1975 as the YAH-64, and in 1976, Hughes received a full-scale development contract. In 1982, the Army approved the program, now known as AH-64A Apache, for production. Deliveries began from the McDonnell Douglas plant at Mesa, Ariz., in 1984 — the year Hughes Helicopters became part of McDonnell Douglas.
A target acquisition and designation sight/pilot night-vision sensor and other advanced technologies added to its effectiveness in the ground support role. To reduce costs and simplify logistics, the Apache used the same T700 engines as the Army’s Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk utility helicopter and its naval cousin, the SH-60 Seahawk.
Highly maneuverable and heavily armed, the combat-proven Apache helicopter is the backbone of the U.S. Army’s all-weather, ground-support capability. The AH-64D Apache Longbow, which first flew as a prototype on May 14, 1992, provided a quantum leap in capability over the AH-64A. The Apache Longbow’s fire-control radar and advanced avionics suite gave combat pilots the ability to rapidly detect, classify, prioritize, and engage stationary or moving enemy targets at standoff ranges in nearly all weather conditions.

The Vice President. The medical reports were very good. I had a very short visit with him. He'd taken a nap. When I walked in there he was awake, and I had a very good talk with him. What he really needs is rest. I tell you, the report from [Physician to the President] Dr. Ruge, when he briefed the Cabinet and briefed the leadership, was extraordinarily good. The President, to me, looked well and was very responsive, asked with his unfailing courtesy about Barbara, my wife. And Nancy Reagan, Mrs. Reagan, was there.
So, I feel the same thing the country feels, a great sense of relief and feeling that he is on the road to recovery. It's a turmoil around there. I thought in intensive care that everybody would be whispering, but it's like Grand Central Station.
But he's doing very well. Very well. And everything seems to be proceeding. I just want to go up and walk out on the Senate floor, chat with some of my friends there, and tell them about this visit, and then go back. I have to get back to meet with The Netherlands Prime Minister.
Q. There is a report that there's something of a rift among some of the Cabinet members, particularly Secretary Haig and Secretary Weinberger. Is your role in any way involved in trying to heal that rift?
The Vice President. No, and I don't detect any such rift. And I think—the thing, I think, from my vantage point, which admittedly, with some of it at 30,000 feet traveling back, was that things proceeded smoothly, in an orderly fashion. I sense a real, calm determination to go ahead. The President—there's no need for any emergency procedures, the power of the Vice President to do anything. And I have not detected, nor do I believe there's any such rift.
Q. Thank you, sir.
Q. You won't be assuming any special powers, Mr. Vice President?
The Vice President. No. Absolutely not. And it's orderly, and just to do what I can to assist, I will be taking over some of the meetings that the President would have participated in. But I'm in most of them anyway, so, business as usual to the best we can do it.

In 1982, Reichert took a young prostitute who was the primary witness in a homicide case into his home, Adamson said. "He invited her back to live with his family, tried to turn her life around," Adamson said. "He wasn't successful, but it reflected some real caring on his part." His actions may have pushed the limits of protocol, Adamson conceded.
Reichert stated Thursday that a supervisor asked him to take in the 16-year-old girl (see Reichert's statement).
"She stayed in our home ... a few days before she ran away," he said. "... It was our hope that the positive influence of our church family would have a positive effect on her ... Unfortunately, she returned to the streets. I do not regret our efforts on her behalf."

Eventually I came to suspect a tracking device had been put in the tire while it was there in the shop. Probably some kind of GPS unit that would record my every movement. I had another clue to support that theory but I will not mention it here, only when I get these bastards in court. What worried me more was what would happen if I had to use that tire. I imagine that device was pretty good sized, if I am driving on the interstate is this thing going to rip through my tire?
My suspicions were reinforced one day when I returned to my apartment. I was living in Kent, WA, by this time. The Wal-Mart incident as well as the flat tire and the paparazzi-types were all out in the Spokane, WA, area. Anyway, on this day in Kent, I had just returned from a road trip, don't remember where I went, but I may have gone back out to Coeur d'Alene. After I parked in front of my apartment, I went inside. But then I walked back outside to my Jeep. Anybody watching me and learning my habits would know that I rarely come back outside after parking and going inside. So I walk outside and there is a purple van parked behind my Jeep. As soon as they see me, they speed off. And there was something suspicious about the behavior of the guy in the passenger seat. He looked surprised.
I was taking some stuff out of my Jeep and the van stopped briefly at one of the other buildings down the road and dropped off the passenger. He started walking into one of the apartment buildings and he even turned around to see if I was watching him. I think they pulled up behind my Jeep and were downloading the GPS data out of the device in my spare tire but I startled them by coming back outside.
