DECEMBER 10, 1864 : SHERMAN ARRIVES IN FRONT OF SAVANNAH
On this day in 1864, Union General William T. Sherman completes his March to the Sea when he arrives in front of Savannah, Georgia.
Since mid-November of that year, Sherman’s army had been sweeping from Atlanta across the state to the south and east towards Savannah, one of the last Confederate seaports still unoccupied by Union forces. Along the way, Sherman destroyed farms and railroads, burned storehouses, and fed his army off the land. In his own words, Sherman intended to “make Georgia howl,”

WAR DEPARTMENT, WASHINGTON, Dec. 25 -- 8 P.M.
To Maj.-Gen, Dix, New-York:
A dispatch has been received this evening by the President from Gen. SHERMAN. It is dated at Savannah, on Thursday, the 22d inst., and announces his occupation of the city of Savannah and the capture of one hundred and fifty guns, plenty of ammunition, and about 25,000 bales of cotton. No other particulars are given.
An official dispatch from Gen. FOSTER to Gen. GRANT, dated on the 22d instant, at 7 P.M., states that the city of Savannah was occupied by Gen. SHERMAN on the morning of the 21st, and that on the preceding afternoon and night, HARDEE escaped with the main body of his infantry and light, artillery, blowing up the iron-clads and the Navy-yard. He enumerates as captured 800 prisoners, 150 guns, 13 locomotives, in good order, 190 cars, a large lot of ammunition and materials of war, three steamers and 33,000 bales of cotton. No mention is made of the present position of HARDEE's force, which had been estimated at about 15,000.
The dispatches of Gen. SHERMAN and Gen. FOSTER are as follows:

To His Excellency, President Lincoln:
I beg to present you as a Christmas gift, the city of Savannah, with one hundred and fifty heavy guns and plenty of ammunition, and also about twenty-five thousand bales of cotton.

The President. Mr. President, let me say, I am very pleased to mark this brief visit to your country by honoring a Frenchman of great character and courage, General Michel Roquejeoffre.
General, under your able leadership, sir, French forces displayed a valor that brought great credit to the name of France and contributed to the success of our coalition. Like Lafayette before you, you took the field in service to a larger cause. A grateful Nation gives you thanks. And on behalf of all Americans, it is a privilege and a pleasure to present you the Legion of Merit Degree of Chief Commander.
And now, after translation of that, I will ask Major Cancilla if you would please read the citation, sir.
Major Cancilla. The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit, Degree of Chief Commander, to General Michel Roquejeoffre for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service as the commander in chief of the Rapid Action Force during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
General Roquejeoffre assembled and commanded over 16,000 of France's best soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines as a contingent of the largest coalition in modern history. General Roquejeoffre's ability to foster a cohesive and cooperative spirit between all nations resulted in the successful execution of hostilities against one of the world's largest land armies, employment of history's most extensive and impressive air campaigns, and effective maritime intercept and mine operations, and the world's first defense against ballistic missiles.
His air force struck heavily defended targets in Kuwait and was instrumental in neutralizing or reducing a significant number of enemy capabilities, particularly the Iraqi commanding-control-infrastructure and its ability to conduct counterattacks. The French Daguet Division conducted a light-ning breakthrough and encircling movement covering over 150 kilometers in less than 48 hours, and then protected the coalition's flank. French naval forces were active during the entire campaign, conducting escort operations and mine clearing, and actively participating in the ongoing maritime intercept operations.
Throughout Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm General Roquejeoffre led his forces magnificently and displayed the leadership, vision, wisdom, and perseverance required to ensure the victory of coalition forces over Iraq.

Exoplanet hunters disagree over who made the first discovery of a world orbiting another star. The question can even inspire a bit of intercontinental rivalry, with both American and European teams laying claim to “firsts.”
The very first planetary bodies outside our solar system to be clearly identified orbit a bizarre object called a pulsar. This is the extremely dense, rapidly spinning core of a star that has died a spectacular death: blowing itself apart in a supernova explosion.

Site cleared for Riverfront Park fountain

The roar of a chain saw filled the air at Riverfront Park on Thursday as workers began clearing the path for construction of a new fountain at the park’s entrance along Spokane Falls Boulevard.
The $1.5 million fountain – designed so that people can walk and play among its many water jets – is one of two large-scale improvements being undertaken on the south side of the park this year.
Workers last month removed the park’s vintage gondola as part of a $2.5 million upgrade of the breathtaking ride above lower Spokane Falls and gorge.
