India's space agency lost contact with with a lunar lander on Friday, throwing into question whether it successfully completed the historic mission to land on the moon's south pole.
The Chandrayaan-2’s Vikram lander appeared to be on its way to landing on the south pole before images on a computer screen following it appeared to freeze.
Then an official with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) made a solemn announcement at about 4:47 p.m. ET.
"The communications from the lander to ground station was lost. The data is being analyzed," ISRO chief Kailasavadivoo Sivan announced to mission control.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi sat in a glass-enclosed room, above a small army of ISRO personnel at mission control in the southern city of Bengaluru.
And at 5:03 p.m. ET, Modi issued a statement congratulating the space agency — no matter the result.
"India is proud of our scientists! They’ve given their best and have always made India proud," the prime minister tweeted. "These are moments to be courageous, and courageous we will be!"
A successful landing would have made India one of four nations to put a craft on the moon, and the first to touch down near the lunar south pole.
Only the U.S., Russia and China have landed spacecraft on the moon. An attempt by Israel in April failed.
The Chandrayaan-2 orbiter launched into space on July 22 and has been circling the moon since Aug. 20.
The 3,200-pound lander is carrying a six-wheeled rover named Pragyan as well as a suite of scientific instruments.
Plans call for the Vikram lander to touch down on a relatively flat plain between two craters. But like all landings on other celestial bodies, this will be a tricky one because of the complicated sequence of rocket firings needed to bring a spacecraft slowly to the surface.
In a press briefing in August, ISRO chairman Sivan called these sequences the mission's “most terrifying moments."

Can't remember a single detail about my dreams last night. For the past few hours, I have been feeling drowsy, which seems unusal because I slept til almost 9 this morning. I wonder if they programmed me to start feeling sleepy earlier tonight because they are going to present some new message to me in my sleep tonight.
These foreign dreams are impossible to ignore. It is almost like watching something on tv. I remember I started feeling something unusal about my dreams back when I lived at Oakwood Apts in Bellevue. That would have been late 1999 I think. I was having vivid dreams about a friend of mine. I would wake up calling out her name. I woke up feeling certain she was there in the room with me. I was being told things. In early 2004 when I decided to leave Microsoft, I wonder if I was following instructions that had been given to me in my sleep. It reminds me of something I read the other day about some preamble Thomas Jefferson had written, something to do with establishing religious freedom, with the similarity being something to do with free will, as in you really don't know why you do the things you do. Anyway, the foreign dreams were especially intense when I was living recently in that apt. in Kent. I remember waking up and I had my arm reaching up the wall towards the ceiling. I had the strongest feeling that I had been instructed to do that in my sleep. Sometimes, things....ideas, just seem to come so easily to me. It is all so much easier right now. But I know it is going to end sometime soon. I don't know what it is, but I think it is some kind of "dimming," like a dimmer switch on a light.

H.P. Lovecraft, in full Howard Phillips Lovecraft, (born August 20, 1890, Providence, Rhode Island, U.S.—died March 15, 1937, Providence), American author of fantastic and macabre short novels and stories, one of the 20th-century masters of the Gothic tale of terror.
Lovecraft was interested in science from childhood, but lifelong poor health prevented him from attending college. He made his living as a ghostwriter and rewrite man and spent most of his life in seclusion and poverty. His fame as a writer increased after his death.
From 1923 on, most of Lovecraft’s short stories appeared in the magazine Weird Tales. His Cthulhu Mythos series of tales describe ordinary New Englanders’ encounters with horrific beings of extraterrestrial origin. In these short stories, Lovecraft’s intimate knowledge of New England’s geography and culture is blended with an elaborate original mythology. His other short stories deal with similarly terrifying phenomena in which horror and morbid fantasy acquire an unexpected verisimilitude. The Case of Charles Dexter Ward (1927; published posthumously 1941), At the Mountains of Madness (1931, published 1936), and The Shadow over Innsmouth (1931, published 1936) are considered his best short novels. Lovecraft was a master of poetic language, and he attained unusually high literary standards in his particular fictional genre.

Europeans at the time of Christopher Columbus's voyage often referred to all of South and East Asia as "India" or "the Indias/Indies", sometimes dividing the area into "Greater India", "Middle India", and "Lesser India". The oldest surviving terrestrial globe, by Martin Behaim in 1492 (before Columbus' voyage), labels the entire Asian subcontinent region as "India".
Columbus carried a passport in Latin from the Spanish monarchs that dispatched him ad partes Indie ("toward the regions of India") on their behalf. When he landed in the Antilles, Columbus referred to the resident peoples he encountered there as "Indians" reflecting his purported belief that he had reached the Indian Ocean. The name stuck; for centuries the native people of the Americas were collectively called "Indians"

Geoffrey E. Perry, a British grammar school teacher who used rudimentary equipment to uncover secret details of the Soviet space program during the cold war and later became a trusted consultant to United States government agencies, died on Tuesday near his home in Bude, Cornwall. He was 72.
The cause was a sudden heart attack, said Max White, a close friend.
At the Kettering Grammar School in England, Mr. Perry and boys he had trained to interpret satellite signals from a simple radio receiver caused an international stir in 1966, when he announced that the Soviet Union had begun using a third launching site, at Plesetsk in northwest Russia, whose existence was then secret.
The amateur monitoring program, which eventually outgrew the school and is now an international collaboration called the Kettering Group, went on to become one of the best sources of public information on Soviet satellites as they malfunctioned, fell out of the sky or simply went about their routine business.
''He did amazing things with very little equipment,'' said Marcia Smith, a space policy analyst with the Congressional Research Service, which called upon Mr. Perry as a consultant for its reports on the Soviet space program. ''The most important pieces of equipment he had were his brain and his desire to share information with the world.''
Geoffrey E. Perry was born on August 4, 1927, in Braintree, Essex, and received a bachelor's degree from Reading University, where he studied physics. He began teaching at Kettering in the early 50's.
His interest in space was first stirred by a German V-2 rocket that landed near his home in Braintree during World War II. His interest was further piqued by a multinational scientific program called the International Geophysical Year in 1957, which involved much discussion of conditions in space.
Mr. Perry later said that his reading on that program left him ''mentally prepared'' for the Soviet launching of Sputnik in October 1957. By the early 60's, he was monitoring the radio transmissions of telemetry data from Soviet satellites with amateur radio equipment.
Much of Mr. Perry's method, said Dr. Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics who also publishes Jonathan's Space Report, revolved around a phenomenon called the Doppler effect. Familiar in causing the rising and falling tones of train whistles as they approach and recede, the phenomenon has a similar effect on radio emissions from satellites.
''Your ordinary signal doesn't do that,'' Dr. McDowell said. ''So if you see one of these things Dopplering in and out, it's pretty clear that you've got a satellite.''
The degree and timing of the rise and fall allowed Mr. Perry to deduce things like changes in satellites' altitudes and other characteristics, Dr. McDowell said. Mr. Perry eventually learned to use other information, like data on the orbits published by American agencies and the coded information the telemetry signals.
Soon Mr. Perry began ''assigning'' individual satellites to boys at the school, Mr. White said. A principal qualification for the work was a willingness to have dinner at school, Mr. White said. It was during those hours that the Soviet satellites would generally pass over the Soviet Union and transmit data to control stations.
In 1966, Mr. Perry noticed that Soviet satellites were in a different orbit than usual and were communicating to a new location on the ground. He concluded that the Soviets had begun using a new launching site. After a researcher at the Congressional Research Service read his obscure report on the new site in a trade publication and alerted reporters, ''the world's media descended on Kettering Grammar School,'' Mr. White said.
In 1978, after a student pointed out irregularities in the motions of a satellite he had been assigned, Mr. Perry predicted the crash of a Soviet nuclear-powered satellite. It plummeted to the ground in Canada.
The Kettering Group continued to be one of the world's most reliable sources of public information after it left the school upon Mr. Perry's retirement in 1984. It is now a worldwide confederation of amateurs.
Mr. Perry is survived by his wife, Jean; and by his daughter, Isabel Carmichael.
The recent opening of previously secret Soviet archives, Dr. McDowell said, revealed the accuracy of much of Mr. Perry's analysis.
''He's like the archetypal English amateur expert,'' Dr. McDowell said. ''But at the same time the quality of what he did was better than the professionals.' ''

Confirmation bias, also called confirmatory bias or myside bias, is the tendency to search for, interpret, favor, and recall information in a way that confirms one's preexisting beliefs or hypotheses, while giving disproportionately less consideration to alternative possibilities. It is a type of cognitive bias and a systematic error of inductive reasoning. People display this bias when they gather or remember information selectively, or when they interpret it in a biased way. The effect is stronger for emotionally charged issues and for deeply entrenched beliefs. People also tend to interpret ambiguous evidence as supporting their existing position. Biased search, interpretation and memory have been invoked to explain attitude polarization (when a disagreement becomes more extreme even though the different parties are exposed to the same evidence), belief perseverance (when beliefs persist after the evidence for them is shown to be false), the irrational primacy effect (a greater reliance on information encountered early in a series) and illusory correlation (when people falsely perceive an association between two events or situations).
A series of experiments in the 1960s suggested that people are biased toward confirming their existing beliefs. Later work re-interpreted these results as a tendency to test ideas in a one-sided way, focusing on one possibility and ignoring alternatives. In certain situations, this tendency can bias people's conclusions. Explanations for the observed biases include wishful thinking and the limited human capacity to process information. Another explanation is that people show confirmation bias because they are weighing up the costs of being wrong

One can hear the delusional Jesus Christ bible-thumpers trying to rationalize despite how they *know* that their Jesus Christ fairy-tale is a story for morons, as is *all* religion, spirituality, whatever you idiots call it.
Delusional people, similar to drug addicts, find themselves understanding why their behavior is *wrong* and Jesus Christ bible-thumpers - when they're not being hypocrites, as they all are - know their fairy-tale is ridiculous.
One can hear bible-thumpers rationalizing it away by claiming that it is a story with lessons.
But the only reason they care about it is because it gives them a couple of things that are the most important: one is an escape from their miserable lives, instead of trying to live for today and making a better life for themselves. They're slackers and they want easy answers. The second is it gives them an escape for their cowardly terror of mortality.
That escape is in the lies told to them about their ridiculous "afterlife".
