Kill Box: A Post-Apocalyptic Conspiracy Thriller (The Zulu Virus Chronicles Book 2)

Chapter 5

"You look worried," said a voice next to him.

He flinched, nearly jumping in place.

"Jesus. You people move like ghosts," said Greenberg.

The leader of this operation stood next to him, one hand on a hip, the other sipping coffee from a stainless steel insulated mug. He looked oddly familiar, but Greenberg couldn't place him. Definitely someone that had spent some time in the spotlight around D.C. Undoubtedly ex-military, the buzz cut and athletic physique a dead giveaway. Upper echelon, if he had to guess. The guy had the presence of a general, and his people treated him like one.

Chapter 5

"Who are you people?"

"We don't really have a name, but two of the four operatives headed into the Indianapolis quarantine zone completed a similar mission in Monchegorsk. They understand the risks and know how to navigate them."

Impossible. This couldn't be the same group. He'd heard the stories, but considered them legend. The "head in a cooler" story had persisted for a number of years, though nobody could, or would, corroborate it.

"Trust me, Dr. Greenberg. We're on your side," said the man.

"Call me Stan," said Greenberg.

The man extended a hand. "Terrance."

General Terrence Sanderson? The stuff of legends.

"General?"

"In a former life," said the man.

"Unbelievable. Never in a million years did I suspect our paths would cross," said Greenberg, now recognizing his face.

"I *sincerely* hoped they wouldn't cross," said Terrance.

When I was watching this movie on television yesterday, what I heard her say was closer to how she could have married an honest man, a man who was a professor with tenure at Princeton University who was a professor of, "let's say, Middle English," suggesting to me the dialog was written to refer to a Princeton University professor with tenure who was not a professor of Middle English and I noted other details in the scripted dialog that I found personally relevant.

Princeton in Hollywood

By Zachary A. Goldfarb

Princetonian Senior Writer

Had actress Amanda Peet's character, Cynthia Banek, wanted to marry an "honest man," she wouldn't have married Ben Affleck's character, Gavin. She might have chosen English professor John Fleming GS '63.

"I could have married a professor of Middle English, with tenure at Princeton," she told Affleck at a posh restaurant in downtown Manhattan in the movie "Changing Lanes."

"But I married a Wall Street lawyer."

excerpt from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: 04/13/08 1:20 PM
Thoughts are occurring to me that I was missing in action for about 2 months after I was shot down on 6/8/1981, outside of Baghdad. The Iraqi's captured me because I was seriously injured and my body was temporarily paralyzed, where my ejection landing aggravated my back injury from the hard landing I had on 4/14/1981 after I fell out of the space shuttle on landing approach. I was tortured for a while by the Iraqi's but then my paralysis faded and I was able to escape because they did not have me well guarded, thinking there was not any chance I was going to walk out of there.

04/13/08 1:24 PM
I never told them who I really was but they eventually found out after I had escaped. They had moles in the U.S. government who revealed my identity to them and then my next round with them was in Libya in 1986.

Here I am again.

A Second Interstellar Object May Be Streaking through Our Solar System

The “fluke” find of a possible visitor from another star after the 2017 discovery of ‘Oumuamua offers thrilling scientific opportunities

By Jonathan O'Callaghan on September 13, 2019

By most estimates, our galaxy is a bustling place. Given its hundreds of billions of stars—each accompanied by whirling planets, asteroids, comets, and more—one would expect objects to occasionally be flung into interstellar space. The first of them was found in 2017: officially called 1I/2017 U1 but better known as ‘Oumuamua, it was discovered by chance as it swooped past our sun on an outbound trajectory that rapidly took it beyond the reach of Earth’s best telescopes. Now astronomers think they have found another outcast wandering the space between the stars. But this time, it may linger slightly longer, offering unprecedented scientific opportunities.

The object was originally labelled gb00234 but has now been provisionally designated C/2019 Q4 (Borisov) by the Minor Planet Center (MPC) at the Center for Astrophysics at Harvard University and the Smithsonian Institution. It was discovered on August 30 by Gennady Borisov, using a homemade telescope in Crimea. Borisov, an amateur astronomer, is one of many hobbyists who scour the skies for undiscovered comets orbiting the sun in our solar system.

“Half a year ago, I made a new telescope. And with the help of it, I discovered this unique comet,” Borisov says. “I was excited about the comet. And of course, I was very surprised by the uniqueness. I would be glad if such an interesting space object gets my name.”

Ever since ‘Oumuamua, amateur and professional comet hunters have had their eyes peeled for another object “unbound” from our star, meaning something moving fast enough to slip the sun’s gravitational clutches. And the faint point of light in Borisov’s images, streaking sunward through the space between Jupiter and Mars, was moving fast indeed.

After Borisov’s initial discovery, astronomers used bigger telescopes—including at observatories in Hawaii and on the Canary Islands—to get additional images of C/2019 Q4, refining its orbital characteristics with computer models all the while. The latest data suggests the object is several kilometers across and hurtling into the inner solar system at about 30 kilometers a second. Its projected path is highly eccentric, describing less a circle and more an open curve. Taken together, the speed and trajectory strongly suggest C/2019 Q4 is not bound to our sun. It will make its closest approach to that star on December 8, at a distance of 1.7 astronomical units, or AU (one AU is the average distance between Earth and the sun). On December 28 it will make its closest approach to Earth, coming within about two AU of our planet.

After only having weeks to study ‘Oumuamua on the outbound leg of its one-way trip around the sun, astronomers are ecstatic at the prospects of having more time to scrutinize a visitor from another star. Plans are already emerging for a cavalcade of observations as C/2019 Q4 continues its journey through our solar system. “It’s going to be around for a comparatively long time,” says Matthew Payne of the MPC. “It should be visible for many, many months—possibly for the good portion of a year.”

One of the reasons 2019 Q4 is more visible besides being on its way into the solar system is that it is much brighter than ‘Oumuamua—about six times by current estimates. This brightness, coupled with what looks to be a visible “tail” of outgassed material extending from the object, suggests it is an interstellar comet—whereas the tailless ‘Oumuamua was something far less active, perhaps an asteroid (or something much stranger). If all these details are confirmed, C/2019 Q4 would become the first known interstellar comet, and that finding would have huge implications for what we could learn from it. Comets are primordial relics, recording the “starting conditions” of planetary systems, when worlds first begin to coalesce around newborn stars.

“Because it’s a real comet, we’ll be able to get spectra of the coma [the atmosphere of gas and dust surrounding it], what molecules are outgassing from it, the relevant abundances of different elements like carbon and oxygen—and really get a detailed survey of a planetary building block from an alien solar system,” says Gregory Laughlin of Yale University. Laughlin notes we could even detect signatures of water on the object. “There might be a chance to track it back to its location of origin and the kind of system that might have given rise to it,” he adds.

The fact that this finding was made by an amateur astronomer is particularly noteworthy, too. Since the detection of ‘Oumuamua, we have seen no great change in our observational techniques, so C/2019 Q4’s discovery was a bit of a “fluke,” according to Laughlin. Most astronomers are waiting for upcoming facilities such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope in Chile, which is expected to switch on in the early 2020s and should be capable of finding many more interstellar objects (at least one is thought to be in our solar system at any given time). On this occasion, however, it is the hobbyists who deserve plaudits. “The amateur astronomer community is very, very good these days,” says Marshall Eubanks of the company Space Initiatives. And they don’t get a lot of the recognition.”

Team members on the European Space Agency’s Comet Interceptor mission will be watching these developments closely. Due to launch in 2028, their spacecraft is designed to loiter in space, waiting to possibly rocket toward an interstellar object if a suitable target is found. Colin Snodgrass of the University of Edinburgh, deputy lead on the mission, notes that by the time it launches, C/2019 Q4 will be “farther away than we expect Comet Interceptor to be able to target.” But he adds the discovery of a second interstellar object within two years bodes well for Comet Interceptor. “The primary mission is still to visit a comet from our own Oort cloud, but everyone does still hope that we get lucky and get to visit [an interstellar object]!” he says.

C/2019 Q4’s status as truly interstellar still needs to be definitively determined—a decision that will be made by the International Astronomical Union after further observations have been made. “If they say it’s interstellar, it’s interstellar,” says Michele Bannister of Queen’s University Belfast. But Bannister notes the observations so far are “pretty solid,” and already astronomers are clamoring for observing time on the planet’s most powerful telescopes to study it in more detail. The object is currently too close to the sun for telescopes such as Hubble to safely look at it, but come October, all eyes will be trained on this enigmatic visitor trundling past, with all the secrets of another solar system onboard. “A lot of very exciting opportunities are going to arrive,” Laughlin says.

The U-2 Incident 1960

Statement by Secretary of State Herter, May 9, 1960.

(Dept. of State Bulletin, May 23, 1960, pp. 816-817.)

On May 7 the Department of State spokesman made a statement with respect to the alleged shooting down of an unarmed American civilian aircraft of the U-2 type over the Soviet Union. The following supplements and clarifies this statement as respects the position of the United States Government.

Ever since Marshal Stalin shifted the policy of the Soviet Union from wartime cooperation to postwar conflict in 1946 and particularly since the Berlin blockade, the forceful takeover of Czechoslovakia, and the Communist aggressions in Korea and Viet- nam the world has lived in a state of apprehension with respect to Soviet intentions. The Soviet leaders have almost complete access to the open societies of the free world and supplement this with vast espionage networks. However, they keep their own society tightly closed and rigorously controlled. With the development of modern weapons carrying tremendously destructive nuclear warheads, the threat of surprise attack and aggression presents a constant danger. This menace is enhanced by the threats of mass destruction frequently voiced by the Soviet leadership.

For many years the United States in company with its allies has sought to lessen or even to eliminate this threat from the life of man so that he can go about his peaceful business without fear. Many proposals to this end have been put up to the Soviet Union. The President's open-skies proposal of 1955 was followed in 1957 by the offer of an exchange of ground observers between agreed military in the U.S., the U.S.S.R., and other nations that might wish to participate. For several years we have been seeking the mutual abolition of the restrictions on travel imposed by the Soviet Union and those which the United States felt obliged to institute on a reciprocal basis. More recently at the Geneva disarmament conference the United States has proposed far-reaching new measure of controlled disarmament. It is possible that the Soviet leaders have a different version and that, however unjustifiedly, they fear attack from the West. But this is hard to reconcile with their continual rejection or our repeated proposal for effective measures against surprise attack and for effective inspection of disarmament measures.

I will say frankly that it is unacceptable that the Soviet political system should be given an opportunity to make secret preparations to face the free world with the choice of abject surrender or nuclear destruction. The Government of the United States would be derelict to its responsibility not only to the American people but to free peoples everywhere if it did not, in the absence of Soviet cooperation, take such measures as are possible unilaterally to lessen and to overcome this danger of surprise attack. In fact the United States has not and does not shirk this responsibility.

In accordance with the National Security Act of 1947, the President has put into effect since the beginning of his administration directives to gather by every possible means the information required to protect the United States and the free world against surprise attack and to enable them to make effective preparations for their defense. Under these directives programs have been developed and put into operation which have included extensive aerial surveillance by unarmed civilian aircraft, normally of a peripheral character but on occasion by penetration. Specific missions of these unarmed civilian aircraft have not been subject to Presidential authorization. The fact that such surveillance was taking place has apparently not been a secret to the Soviet leadership, and the question indeed arises as to why at this particular juncture they should seek to exploit the present incident as a propaganda battle in the cold war.

This Government had sincerely hoped and continues to hope that in the coming meeting of the Heads of Government in Paris Chairman Khrushchev would be prepared to cooperate in agreeing to effective measures which would remove this fear of sudden mass destruction from the minds of people everywhere. Far from being damaging to the forthcoming meeting in Paris, this incident should serve to underline the importance to the world of an earnest attempt there to achieve agreed and effective safeguards against surprise attack and aggression.

At my request and with the authority of the President, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, the Honorable Allen W. Dulles, is today briefing Members of the Congress fully along the foregoing lines.

The U-2 Incident 1960

UnitedStates Note to the U.S.S.R., May 11, 1960.

The Embassy of the United States of America refers to the Soviet Government's note of May 10 concerning the shooting down of an American unarmed civilian aircraft on May 1, and under instruction from its Government, has the honor to state the following.

The United States Government, in the statement issued by the Department of State on May 9, has fully states its position with respect to this incident.

In its note the Soviet Government has stated that collection of intelligence about the Soviet Union by American aircraft is a "calculated policy" of the United States. The United States Government does not deny that it has pursued such a policy for purely defensive purposes. What it emphatically does deny is that this policy has any aggressive intent, or that the unarmed U-2 flight on May 1 was undertaken in an effort to prejudice the success of the forthcoming meeting of the Heads of Government in Paris or to "return the State of American-Soviet relations to the worst times of the cold war." Indeed, it is the Soviet Government's treatment of this case which, if anything, may raise questions about its intentions in respect to these matters.

For its part, the United States Government will participate in the Paris meeting on May 16 prepared to cooperate to the fullest extent in seeking agreements designed to reduce tensions, including effective safeguards against surprise attack which would make unnecessary issues of this kind.

Visited the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, from where the onboard scientific experiments are managed. Had a chance to make a surprise call to the crew from the Payloads control room. Always nice to talk to friends! #DareToExplore

excerpt from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: August 9, 2006

My hunch is that I was taken captive again by natives, where they threw me in to fight a lion. There is this memory I have been thinking about for a while. It was when i was a kid, maybe 7 years old. Mom was married to James Nevell and we lived in De Queen. He had not gone back into the Marines at that time or he had just gotten out. I think it was the former. Anyway, one day, I was rummaging through our storage shed and I found his U.S. Marines-issued saber. Or I found a machete that day. I remember both happening. Anyway, I was playing with the machete or the saber out in the yard and I was chopping away at any threatening blades of grass or tree limbs. At one point, I started to chop a tree limb that was laying on the ground in front of me. After I swung the blade over my head to strike down on the limb, mom's new puppy ran between my legs and run under the blade. I struck the little bastard square on its backbone, but remarkably, I didn't even break the skin. It ran off yelping but wasn't even bleeding. I was very scared because I thought I had just killed it, but it was all right. As I was just writing that memory, I felt a greater association to it and that Costner movie I just wrote about. When I started writing about hitting that dog, I was thinking about something with lions. As in, a lion rushed at me, I leapt into the air, did a something like a somersault, but not the backflip, rather the other....what do you call that? It wouldn't be a backflip....but something like a side-flip....I'll have to look that up. Anyway, as I flipped over the top of the lion, I either punched its backbone or I had some kind of weapon I used to break its back. I have no idea if this is memory or imagination but I think of this many times. I just wish I knew.

at that first apartment I had in Greenville in 1990. I looked it up the other day and it was, or now is, named Preserve at Wood's Lake. I moved from there to Wexford in nearby Taylors. She invited me one day to go to this nightclub close to where we lived, near the Greenville airport, not the GSP. We used to go over there a lot in the evenings after work. I can't remember the name of that place but I would recognize it if I saw it. AH...it was The Phoenix.

I wrote about March 24th earlier. I remember March 24, back in 1990, was the day I started work for Ketterman's in the Greenville office. Ketterman's was later bought by a company named Information Systems Analysts with my division being something like Information Systems Services, which made it ISA-ISS. The company owner met with us in Greenville, when he bought the company, sometime in 1992, shortly before I transfered with them to Memphis. ISA was based in Alexandria, VA, and the owner was a former U.S. Navy officer. Anyway, I remember March 24th as being the first day at work for Ketterman's and having to go out on a service call and I had to search for the bank because I had just moved to that town and I wasn't really even sure how to get back to my apartment after I got off work that day.

Her first job, before becoming a full-time teller, was to replenish cash in the ATM machines. If a machine was inoperative, she would call me out to repair it.

Was I part of the group that is known as Delta Force? That would make sense.

Then, as usual, they dumped me off at the hospital. I don’t even remember them asking me any substantive questions. That was the time the paramedic told me I had high-blood pressure as I was waiting in the ER while strapped on the gurney.

One of several operations in which Delta Force operators are thought to have played important roles was the invasion of Iraq in 2003. They allegedly entered Baghdad in advance, undercover with long hair and moustaches, along with SEALs from DEVGRU, guiding air strikes, building networks of informants while eavesdropping on and sabotaging Iraqi communication lines.

Back in May, I was writing about how I sensed that I had served in two different branches of the service. I assumed that I had been in the Navy and the Marines. This morning, I realized that must have been my sense of being in the Navy and also the space program. Then I realized those thoughts may actually represent that I worked with Delta Force

Wounded veteran thanks community after Hero's welcome in North Idaho

Army Sgt. 1st Class Brian Sharp and his fellow Green Berets were ambushed during a mission in Afghanistan. Sharp was shot multiple times and almost died.

KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho — Army Sgt. 1st Class Brian Sharp thanked the North Idaho community members who came out to support him and his family Friday.

Their statement read:

"To the people of North Idaho, Thank you. My family and I are truly humbled by your unwavering support and patriotism. Your display of community has lifted the spirits of my family and the families of the fallen. I would have never asked for such an event, but I’ve come to find peace in that this event wasn’t just for me or my family, rather it was for all of our operators still fighting evil worldwide. It is absolutely remarkable to come home and see the streets lined with passion, hope, faith, and most importantly - family. Your patience as you waited, standing in the rain, is something I can only believe family would do. Our hearts will forever have a spot reserved for all of you. Please let us all continue to bond through yet extended hardship as one of yours, Sergeant First Class Dustin B. Ard of Idaho Falls, has paid the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan just two days ago. As a fellow Special Forces soldier and Green Beret, I can personally attest that Dustin will not be forgotten. Thank you Idaho, for all that you’ve done and everything that words can’t express. I am not one to ask for help, but if you are seeking a way to help our gold star families and families of the wounded, the Special Forces Foundation is the place to start. Again, thank you for celebrating life, liberty, and freedom"

Dozens of community members lined up to give a hero's welcome on Friday to a veteran who was wounded in Afghanistan this year.

Deputies with the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office provided an escort for Army Sgt. 1st Class Brian Sharp from Stateline to Highway 95, then north to Lancaster Road at 11 a.m. on Friday.

The sheriff's office has also reached out to Idaho State Police and other law enforcement agencies that may want to help.

Sharp is the cousin-in-law of KCSO Sgt. Erik Hedlund, who says Sharp is coming to visit family in North Idaho now that he has recovered enough to travel.

Sgt. Sharp and his fellow Green Berets were on a mission in Afghanistan earlier this year when they were ambushed by their own Afghan support team, Hedlund said.

Two soldiers were killed in the battle. Sharp was shot multiple times in the pelvis and abdomen, and almost died in the field. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his sacrifices.

After Sharp was stabilized, he returned to the United States and has been recovering in the hospital, just recently regaining the ability to walk, Hedlund said. At the same time, his one-year-old daughter, Audrey, was also learning to walk for the first time.

During his recovery, however, two more Green Berets from his team were killed and, in a more recent mission, his mentor Sgt. Major James "Ryan" Sartor was killed in battle.

Hedlund said Sartor saved Sharp's life multiple times and was close with his wife, Amy.

"As you might imagine, my cousin Brian is struggling right now, not only with the physical pain of not being there for his brothers as they gave the ultimate sacrifice in battle," Hedlund wrote.

Dozens of people lined the streets beside Highway 95 on Friday morning for Sharp's law enforcement escort. A local Walgreens in the area even changed its reader board to say, "Welcome home Sgt. 1st Class Brian Sharp."

Hedlund said Sharp is from Montana, but his wife was born and raised in Coeur d'Alene and also lived in Spokane. The two were married in a private ceremony overseas but had a wedding reception with family in Hayden.

The family's ties to the community include Amy's grandma in Spokane Valley, several cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews in and around North Idaho, Hedlund said.
