That's funny. Today I decided for the first time in months to take out for a ride that cheap mountain bicycle I purchased last year on Amazon with four-years accumulated rewards points, something I had never paid much attention to.
Wasn't even sure where I was going to go. I stood here in this apartment-cage they have forced me into with no possible hope of escape and I dreaded getting onto my stationary bicycle and I had been thinking for a while I should take out that mountain bicycle for shorter rides that substitute for the stationary bicycle that I might not even bring myself to start pedaling.
The mountain bike has had a few minor problems but it is easier to ride, although 10 pounds heavier, than my hybrid bicycle. The hybrid is much more pleasant to ride, and satisfying because it didn't cost very much and is a solid bicycle with gear-shifting as easy as snapping one's fingers. But I should have heeded their sizing chart when purchasing it online. The sizing charts were definitely accurate. I purchased the 56cm model and it is just a little too big for me and my legs. First time I rode it I actually fell over, which is rare for me. It's a dangerous bicycle though regardless of size. The pedal reaches into the inside of the front tire and that's a big problem when cranking a slow speed and making a turn with the handlebars. Doesn't matter where your foot is on the pedal; the pedal is going to hit the tire. But that wasn't why I fell over. I feel over because my legs are a heck of a lot less limber now and my foot hit the pack on the back rack and my body momentum carried me backwards and, while fortunately crumpling up my body in just the correct manner to avoid injury, I hit the ground and the bicycle toppled over on me. I don't remember by 2002 silver titanium Litespeed road bicycle having that problem with the pedal reaching into the front tire. I have been wondering if that's become standard on road bicycles now. I don't recall that problem with my Schwinn road bicycle before the Litespeed. The height decidedly caused problems with my ankles and aggravated earlier injuries that I'm guessing I should have seen the doctor about. The severe pain in my feet makes me want to lament on the inevitable failure of my aging body. But then I remember back long ago when I first started training for triathlon. I had been doing a lot of long-distance cycling and one day, over a span of about fifteen-16 hours I road my 1994 blue Schwinn road bicycle from Seattle to Portland Oregon over a popular road bicycle course they have every year. I finised it the year before but not all in one day. So in the year 2001 I pedaled out 200 miles in somewhat more than a half-day and that was when I decided, when first discovering it on the internet, that I shouldn't have any problem completing the Ironman Utah triathlon when they held the first race in June 2002.
So I started training for triathlon. And then the pain started. Serious, intense pain in my legs. I would go out to train and ride 50 miles on my bicycle and then when I would start trying to run on foot then the muscle spasms would start in my legs. That went on for months. And was very depressing. Eventually I figured the right place to massage on my legs and problem solved. Didn't help with speed but at least then with that correction I could huff-and-puff for a ways without feeling as though my leg muscles were ripping off the bones. I successfully completed Ironman Coeur d'Alene on 6/27/2004 as competitor number 878.
The shorter distance triathlons were fun but those were just training days for me. I believed that I could go out each and every day of the month and for months and months I could each and every day finish the distance required for a sprint-distance triathlon. Hell, I could probably finish a sprint-distance triathlon today if I tried.
Today I wasn't sure where I was going to ride to. Had to go somewhere because I really, really, really do not want to sit another minute on that stationary bicycle. So I took off. 4 miles later I was at Saltese.

Description
This trail joins the Uplands Loop in Saltese Uplands about halfway up the main hill. The singletrack trail is narrow but relatively clear of rocks, roots and other debris. It winds upward through a series of switchbacks. A bit windswept, there are almost no trees to impede 360-degree views of the Spokane Valley/Saltese Flats/Liberty Lake area.
About a mile of uphill hiking will take you to the water tower which marks the northernmost point of the trail and the point at which it begins to move east and south, back to an intersection with the Uplands Loop.
There are several intersections with old maintenance road tracks which are no longer sanctioned trails in the area but the tread on this singletrack trail clearly delineates it from other, lesser used tracks.

I having been having more specific thoughts about what I think are the calculations I was making to navigate into orbit of Callisto. It is all really not unlike the fire-control solutions I have talked about in the past, as associated with the Fire Control Technician of my artificial identity.
I imagine, or actually remember, that I put a lot of effort into letting gravity determine my part as I entered orbit, or at least as much as I could let gravity control my path. I probably had to make some kind of thruster burn at some point. But what I always wanted to do was to think of my navigation in terms of how sailors were dependant on the wind long ago before powered ships came into existence. The reason is that I wanted as practice as possible because I could always depend on gravity more than I could fuel, in that there was an abundance of gravity, depending on the right conditions, just like the wind. I wanted to save my fuel as much as possible in case there wasn't any wind, or gravity, as the case may be, to keep my ship moving.
I can almost visualize myself making these calculations and pondering the variables, but I can't quite put it all together enough to articulate. I imagine myself working out the variables associated with the position of Jupiter, for example, and then plotting my travel so I could apply some kind of formula that would tell me how much Jupiter was going to pull me or push me away from my target of Callisto.

What Happened to Saltese Lake?

Most Spokane-area residents are familiar with Liberty Lake near the Idaho-Washington border, but few are aware that there once existed an even larger lake only a few miles west of Liberty Lake.
Saltese Lake (named after Coeur d' Alene Chief Andrew Seltice who once resided near the lake) was completely drained in the 1890s by Valley pioneer Peter Morrison who homesteaded the area that included Saltese Lake. Morrison and crews of his hired laborers spent years trenching several canals to drain the lake in order to expose the lake bed to grow what he felt would be the best Timothy Hay in the Northwest. Morrison's idea is representative of how American and European settlers transformed an agriculturally-inhospitable region into an economically profitable enterprise.
Starting in 1894, Morrison went to work draining Saltese Lake. He hired crews of laborers to perform the duty and they used horse teams that pulled the "fresno," which was a bucket-like scoop used to dig the canals. The process was long and arduous as several canals were trenched, totaling nearly 10-miles in length. By 1900, Morrison's workers were finished and in a matter of weeks there remained nothing of Saltese Lake except for a small amount of marshy lake bottom.
The main drainage canal, which still helps drain the lake to this very day, is known as Saltese Creek. It flows into a small body of water directly behind Central Valley High School known as Shelley Lake, which was formed as a result of the lake's initial drainage. Several other smaller canals still surround the west side of the former lake. Much of the east side of the lake is maintained as the Saltese Uplands Conservation area, and the marshy lake bottom that could not be drained is in the works of being turned into a protected wetlands area by Spokane County.
The Morrison family still live on their ancestor's original homestead property and Timothy Hay is still harvested on the farm that was once a lake. The hay grown on the Morrison farm is still considered to be some of the best of its kind in the region.
