Captain's Log, Homestead Day 2186

Next week marks precisely 6 years since my permanent return to Spokane. I lived out here from Seattle for a few months in summer 2004, finding this place because of my successful Ironman triathlon hobby. I clearly remember those first days and how I enjoyed driving along Sprague Avenue, perhaps the only person with a favorable view of that place, although I don't actually know any person here so who knows what their view is of Sprague Avenue. For me though, I loved Ironman triathlon and I loved Spokane and the future was bright for me.

Today and in recent days new thoughts have formed in my conscious mind that seem to explain a few things that have troubled me for a long time.

The *point* of living out here again, arriving 09/26/2013 and 09/27/2013, is to *distance* myself from the mundane life of Kerry Burgess.

Reinforcing my theory about 03/16/2013, I must distance myself from the mundane *ambitions* and aspirations of the life I *remember* of me, Kerry Burgess.

Even the *fantastic* activities I have theorized about of the 1990s are not important, in the long run. They're important, but only in the sense of reinforcing my confidence that something tremendously incredible happened to me.

I'm sure I'll never explain it. Don't really need to. All I need to be consciously aware of is that something incredible *did* happen.

Perhaps with enough time here in this isolation I will be psychologically prepared for the epiphany I need to shrug off this mundane existence.

Native American name controversy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Native American name controversy is an ongoing discussion about the changing terminology used by indigenous peoples of the Americas to describe themselves, as well as how they prefer to be referred to by others.

United States

"Indian" and "American Indian" (since 1492)

Europeans at the time of Christopher Columbus's voyage often referred to all of South and East Asia as "India" or "the Indias/Indies", sometimes dividing the area into "Greater India", "Middle India", and "Lesser India". The oldest surviving terrestrial globe, by Martin Behaim in 1492 (before Columbus' voyage), labels the entire Asian subcontinent region as "India".

Columbus carried a passport in Latin from the Spanish monarchs that dispatched him ad partes Indie ("toward the regions of India") on their behalf. When he landed in the Antilles, Columbus referred to the resident peoples he encountered there as "Indians" reflecting his purported belief that he had reached the Indian Ocean. The name stuck; for centuries the native people of the Americas were collectively called "Indians"

CHAPTER 6

TRUE BELIEVERS

(from internet transcript)

They needed guys with guns, but they were hard to find at least the right ones, with the right attitudes-and the task was made more difficult by government activities with similar, but divergent aims. It helped them keep away from the more obvious kooks, though.

"Damn, it's pretty out here," Mark observed. His host snorted. "There's a new house right the other side of that ridge line. On a calm day, I can see the smoke from their chimney."

Mark had to laugh. "There goes the neighborhood. You and Dan'l Boone, eh?"

Foster adopted a somewhat sheepish look. "Yeah, well, it is a good five miles."

"But you know, you're right. Imagine what it looked like before the white man came here. No roads 'cept for the riverbanks and deer trails, and the hunting must have been pretty spectacular."

"Good enough you didn't have to work that hard to eat, I imagine." Foster gestured at the fireplace wall of his log cabin, covered with hunting trophies, not all of them legal, but here in Montana's Bitterroot Mountains, there weren't all that many cops, and Foster kept pretty much to himself.

"It's our birthright."

"Supposed to be," Foster agreed. "Something worth fighting for."

"How hard?" Mark asked, admiring the trophies. The grizzly bear rug was especially impressive - and probably illegal as hell.

Foster poured some more bourbon for his guest. "I don't know what it's like back East, but out here, if you fight you fight. All the way, boy. Put one right 'tween the fining lights, generally calms your adversary down a mite."

"But then you have to dispose of the body," Mark said, ping his drink. The man bought only cheap whiskey. Well, he probably couldn't afford the good stuff.

A laugh: "Ever hear of a backhoe? How 'bout a nice fire?"

It was believed by some in this part of the state that Foster had killed a fish-and-game cop. As a result, he was leery of local police-and the highway patrol people didn't like him to go a mile over the limit. But though the car had been found-burned out, forty miles away-the body of the missing officer had not, and that was that. There weren't many people around to be witnesses in this part of the state, even with a new house five miles away. Mark sipped his bourbon and leaned back in the leather chair. "Nice to be part of nature, isn't it?"

"Yes, sir. It surely is. Sometimes I think I kinda understand the Indians, y'know?"

"Know any?"

STS-82 Day 10 Highlights

Back to STS-82 Flight Day 09 Highlights:

On Thursday, February 20, 1997, 6:30 a.m. CST, STS-82 MCC Status Report # 19 reports:

With Discovery's flight control systems checked out and ready to support the Shuttle's return to Earth, the seven astronauts stowed their cabin and prepared for tomorrow's planned landing at the Kennedy Space Center. Landing is scheduled for 12:50 a.m. Central time with a backup opportunity an hour and a half later at 2:32 a.m. The weather forecast reflects a slight chance of rain over the water at the time of landing at the Florida spaceport.

Before wrapping up what is expected to be their final day in orbit, the astronauts held a press conference to discuss the flight, which saw a record-tying five spacewalks conducted to service the Hubble Space Telescope for the second time.

Commander Ken Bowersox and Pilot Scott Horowitz tested the orbiter's aerodynamic surfaces that will be used once Discovery reenters the Earth's atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean. The traditional hot-fire test of Discovery's steering jets was not required since 31 of the 38 jets were fired during the time the Hubble Space Telescope was housed in the Shuttle's cargo bay. The remaining jets will either be fired during normal operations tonight or will be tested during deorbit preparations.

The crew is scheduled to go to bed at 8:25 this morning and wake up at 4:25 this afternoon. If all goes as planned, Discovery's payload bay doors will be closed at about 9 p.m. with a final go-no decision for the first KSC landing opportunity expected at about 11:15 p.m. There are two landing opportunities at both KSC and the backup landing site at Edwards Air Force Base, California.

Discovery is currently orbiting at an altitude of 365 statute miles following an orbital adjustment maneuver to set the Shuttle up for its landing opportunities late tonight. All of Discovery'' systems are in excellent condition.

On Thursday, February 20, 1997, 6:00 p.m. CST, STS-82 MCC Status Report # 20 reports:

With a successful mission behind them, the STS-82 crew is getting set to return home to the Kennedy Space Center.in the early morning hours Friday. Landing is planned for 12:50 a.m. CST with backup opportunities on succeeding orbits.

The crew began its final day in space by sending morning greetings to the Mission Control team in the form of the song."Sloop John B." by the Beach Boys. The control team in return told the crew it was time to "get your motor running" with the song "Born To Be Wild" by Steppenwolf.

Once the crew has completed its post-sleep activities, astronauts will begin preparations for tonight's deorbit and landing opportunities. The first deorbit opportunity is on orbit 148 with an engine firing at 11:38 p.m. CST followed by landing at 12:50 a.m. Landing on the second opportunity would occur at 2:32 a.m. There are landing opportunities at the backup landing site at Edwards Air Force Base, California, at 2:23 and 4:04 a.m. Central time.

According to forecasters, the weather conditions in Florida look promising, but there is a slight chance off-shore showers.

If all goes as planned, Discovery's payload bay doors will be closed at about 9 p.m. with a final go-no go decision for the first KSC landing opportunity expected at about 11:15 p.m..

Discovery is currently orbiting at an altitude of 365 statute miles with all systems in excellent condition.

MAVEN

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) is a spacecraft developed by NASA that went into orbit around Mars to study the planet's atmosphere. Mission goals include determining how the atmosphere and water, presumed to have once been substantial, were lost over time.

MAVEN was launched aboard an Atlas V launch vehicle at the beginning of the first launch window on November 18, 2013. Following the first engine burn of the Centaur second stage, the vehicle coasted in low Earth orbit for 27 minutes before a second Centaur burn of five minutes to insert it into a heliocentric Mars transit orbit.

On September 22, 2014, MAVEN reached Mars and was inserted into an elliptic orbit 6,200 km (3,900 mi) by 150 km (93 mi) above the planet's surface. The principal investigator for the spacecraft is Bruce Jakosky of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado Boulder.

On November 5, 2015, NASA announced that data from MAVEN shows that the deterioration of Mars' atmosphere increases significantly during solar storms. That loss of atmosphere to space likely played a key role in Mars' gradual shift from its carbon dioxide-dominated atmosphere – which had kept Mars relatively warm and allowed the planet to support liquid surface water – to the cold, arid planet seen today. This shift took place between about 4.2 and 3.7 billion years ago.

Chapter 58

“Mother Abagail! ” Dick roared over the motors. More and more cycles filled the yard as the members of the committee crowded out of the house. It was a carnival of swinging headlights and merry-go-round shadows.

“What? ” Larry screamed. Behind him and Stu, Glen, Ralph, and Chad Norris crowded out, forcing Larry and Stu to the foot of the steps.

“She’s come back! ” Dick had to bellow to make himself heard over the cycles. “Oh, she’s in terrible shape! We need a doctor… Christ, we need a miracle! ”

George Richardson pushed through them. “The old woman? Where?”

“Get on, Doc!” Dick shouted at him. “Don’t ask questions! Just for Christ’s sake be quick!”

Richardson mounted the cycle behind Dick Vollman. Dick turned in a tight circle and began to weave his way back through the cluster of motorcycles.

Stu’s eyes met Larry’s. Larry looked as bewildered as Stu felt… but there was a gathering cloud in Stu’s head, and suddenly a terrible feeling of impending doom engulfed him.

“Nick, come on! Come on! ” Fran cried, seizing his shoulder. Nick was standing in the middle of the living room, his face still, immobile.

He couldn’t talk, but suddenly he knew. He knew. It came from nowhere, from everywhere.

There was something in the closet.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_passport

United States passport

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

United States passports are passports issued to citizens and nationals of the United States of America. They are issued exclusively by the U.S. Department of State. Besides passports (in booklet form), limited use passport cards are issued by the same government agency subject to the same requirements. It is unlawful for U.S. citizens and nationals to enter or exit the United States without a valid U.S. passport or Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative-compliant passport-replacement document, though there are many exceptions, waivers are generally granted for U.S. citizens returning without a passport, and the exit requirement is not enforced.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_passport

United States passport

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Restrictions

It is unlawful to enter or exit the United States without a valid passport or Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative-compliant passport-replacement document, or without an exception or waiver.

The use of passports may be restricted for foreign policy reasons. In September 1939, in order to preserve the United States' neutrality in relation to the breakout of World War II, then Secretary of State Cordell Hull issued regulations declaring that outstanding passports, together with passports issued thereafter, could not be used for travel to Europe without specific validation by the Department of State, and such validation could not last more than six months. Similar restrictions can still be invoked upon notice given in the Federal Register, and such notice was issued in 2017, so that passports were "declared invalid for travel to, in, or through the DPRK unless specially validated for such travel."

As confirmed in Haig v. Agee (1981), the administration may deny or revoke passports for foreign policy or national security reasons at any time, as well as for other reasons as prescribed by regulations. A notable example of enforcement of this was the 1948 denial of a passport to U.S. Representative Leo Isacson, who sought to go to Paris to attend a conference as an observer for the American Council for a Democratic Greece, a Communist front organization, because of the group's role in opposing the Greek government in the Greek Civil War. Denial or revocation of a passport does not prevent the use of outstanding valid passports. The physical revocation of a passport is often difficult, and an apparently valid passport can be used for travel until officially taken by an arresting officer or by a court.

The lack of a valid passport (for whatever reason, including revocation) does not render the U.S. citizen either unable to leave the United States, or inadmissible into the United States. The United States is a signatory of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which guarantees residents of its signatories wide-ranging rights to enter or depart their own countries. In Nguyen v. INS, the Supreme Court stated that U.S. citizens are entitled "...to the absolute right to enter its borders." Lower federal courts went as far as to declare that "...the Government cannot say to its citizen, standing beyond its border, that his reentry into the land of his allegiance is a criminal offense; and this we conclude is a sound principle whether or not the citizen has a passport, and however wrongful may have been his conduct in effecting his departure." Therefore, even in the absence of a valid passport, U.S. citizens are not denied entry into the United States, though these travelers may be delayed while the CBP attempts to verify their identity and citizenship status. The U.S. does not exercise passport control on exit from the country, so the individual attempting to depart from the U.S. only needs to have valid documents granting him/her right to entry into the country of destination.
