Words spoken on the local tv news here in Spokane, associated with a local business on fire at beginning of the 6 PM hour, is most certainly the only reason I would have thought to check 12/9/2003, for whatever reason it may seem to represent, if any.

U.S. accusing Iran over drone attack on Saudi...

The U.S. is accusing Iran of an attack on Saudi Arabia's largest oil plants, after multiple drones bombed production fields. The attack destroyed the source of an estimated 8 million barrels of crude oil produced there every day, which is about 10% of the world's daily supply of crude oil.

Adama: Radiation levels within norms. The hull plating kept out most of the hard stuff.

Gaeta: Sir, port stern thrusters are locked open, all bow thrusters non-responsive. We're in an uncontrolled, lateral counter-clockwise spin.

Adama: Send a DC party up to Aux control and have them cut all the fuel lines to the stern thruster.

Tigh: Okay, we have got buckle supports all along the port flight pod, and chain reaction decompressions occuring everywhere forward of frame 2- 250.

Adama: That's a problem. Saul, take personal command of the DC units.

Tigh: Me?

Gaeta: Sir, the stern thruster's still locked open. We need you.

Adama: You're either the XO or you're not.

Chapter 53

"Back toward the Kiowa?"

"Take us high above it, then hug the ground heading due south," said Larsen. "One of the helicopters out there is an Apache."

"Shit," he heard from the back of the plane.

"What does that mean?" said Emma.

"It means we're pretty much fucked," said Larsen. "Unless we can maintain a good distance. They pack a very accurate thirty-millimeter gun mount. If they get in range, we are dead. No amount of maneuvering will do us any good.

Pompeo blames Iran for strike on Saudi oil facilities

First published on September 14, 2019 / 2:38 PM

Dubai, United Arab Emirates — Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed responsiblity for drone attacks Saturday on two major Saudi oil facilities, sparking huge fires and possibly affecting the global energy supplies. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blamed Iran for the strike, calling it "an unprecedented attack on the world's energy supply."

"We call on all nations to publicly and unequivocally condemn Iran's attacks. The United States will work with our partners and allies to ensure that energy markets remain well supplied and Iran is held accountable for its aggression," Pompeo tweeted Saturday afternoon.

It remained unclear hours later whether anyone was injured at the Abqaiq oil processing facility and the Khurais oil field or what effect the assault would have on oil production. Rising smoke from the fires at the sites could be seen by satellites.

The attack by the Iranian-backed Houthis in the war against a Saudi-led coalition comes after weeks of similar drone assaults on the kingdom's oil infrastructure, but none of the earlier strikes appeared to have caused the same amount of damage. The attack likely will heighten tensions further across the Persian Gulf amid an escalating crisis between the U.S. and Iran over its unraveling nuclear deal with world powers.

United Nations envoy Martin Griffiths described the attacks as "extremely worrying" in a statement to BBC News. He called on all parties in the Yemen conflict to exercise restraint.

The first word of the assault came in online videos of giant fires at the Abqaiq facility, some 205 miles northeast of the Saudi capital, Riyadh. Machine-gun fire could be heard in several clips alongside the day's first Muslim call to prayers, suggesting security forces tried to bring down the drones just before dawn.

In daylight, Saudi state television aired a segment with its local correspondent near a police checkpoint, a thick plume of smoke visible behind him.

The fires began after the sites were "targeted by drones," the Interior Ministry said in a statement carried by the state-run Saudi Press Agency. It said an investigation was underway.

Saudi Aramco, the state-owned oil giant, did not respond to questions from The Associated Press. The kingdom hopes soon to offer a sliver of the company in an initial public offering.

In a short address aired by the Houthi's Al-Masirah satellite news channel, military spokesman Yahia Sarie said the rebels launched 10 drones in their coordinated attack after receiving "intelligence" support from those inside the kingdom. He warned that attacks by the rebels would only get worse if the war continues.

"The only option for the Saudi government is to stop attacking us," Sarie said.

The rebels hold Yemen's capital, Sanaa, and other territories in the Arab world's poorest country. Since 2015, a Saudi-led coalition has fought to reinstate the internationally recognized Yemeni government.

The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh said it was unaware of any injuries to Americans. Saudi Aramco employs a number of U.S. citizens, some of whom live in guarded compounds near the site.

"These attacks against critical infrastructure endanger civilians, are unacceptable, and sooner or later will result in innocent lives being lost," U.S. Ambassador John Abizaid, a former Army general, said.

Saudi Aramco describes its Abqaiq oil processing facility in Buqyaq as "the largest crude oil stabilization plant in the world."

The facility processes sour crude oil into sweet crude, then transports it onto transshipment points on the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea or to refineries for local production. Estimates suggest it can process up to 7 million barrels of crude oil a day. By comparison, Saudi Arabia produced 9.65 million barrels of crude oil a day in July.

The plant has been targeted in the past by militants. Al Qaeda-claimed suicide bombers tried but failed to attack the oil complex in February 2006. The Khurais oil field is believed to produce over 1 million barrels of crude oil a day. It has estimated reserves of over 20 billion barrels of oil, according to Aramco.

from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: 09/03/09 4:34 AM
This reminds me of a dream I awoke a few hours ago. I remember glancing at the clock and it read 10:02 PM but that clock is 2 minutes faster than the time on the internet-connected computer so that means the correct time was probably exactly 10 PM. The dream started off that I was with a group of people in a jungle. I think one of them said something about a drought but I don't now remember what he said to his wife and after I thought about it after waking up I wondered if there had actually been a flood and we were stuck on the high ground with no where to go but in the water. So that guy who said something did jump in the water and then his wife did and then their young son. I followed them and I could see land far off in the distance that we were swimming towards. The first person was well ahead of us and I could see myself and I seemed to be fully clothed and perhaps in U.S. military gear because I think that I could see gloves on my hands similar to what a pilot wears and I saw that I was getting into a routine of long-distance swimming. The woman and her son seemed to be near by and to my right side. I noticed something up ahead in the water and for some reason that is not obvious in the dream, I decided that was hippotamus near the surface of the water but it was far enough away that it probably wouldn't bother us. But then some time later another one surfaced near by and it was definitely too close. It started coming after us and I told the woman to swim away from me and we slit up and I was going in a direction towards land that was about 45 degrees or less from the original direction we were heading. Whe I told her to split off from me, I was looking to see that the hippo was swimming very close behind me and then I quickly turned as I was swimming so that I turned around behind the hippo. That seems to be when I made a full circle or almost full circle and so that I was swimming in a direction about 45 degrees or maybe about 35 degrees to the right of our original heading. After some time in the dream I looked back and the hippo had caught up with me again and was gaining ground on me. I could see land up ahead in the distance but there was no way I was going to make. The dream seems to have ended there and that was when I woke up and got up out of bed although I did go back to sleep for a few more hours.

CHAPTER 6

TRUE BELIEVERS

Sometimes I think I kinda understand the Indians, y'know?"

"Know any?"

'Oh, sure. Charlie Grayson, he's a Nez Perce, hunting guide, got my horse off o'him. I do that, too, to make some cash sometimes, mainly take a horse into the high country, really, meet people who get it. And the elk are pretty thick up there."

"What about bear?"

"Enough," Foster replied. "Mainly blacks, but some grizz'."

"What do you use? Bow?"

A good-natured shake of the head. "No, I admire the Indians, but I ain't one myself. Depends on what I'm hunting, and what country I'm doing it in. Bolt-action.300 Winchester Mag mainly, but in close country, a semi auto slug shotgun. Nothing like drillin' three-quarter-inch holes when you gotta, y'know?"

"Handload?"

"Of course. It's a lot more personal that way. Gotta show respect for the game, you know, keep the gods of the mountains happy."

Foster smiled at the phrase, in just the right sleepy way, Mark saw. In every civilized man was a pagan waiting to come out, who really believed in the gods of the mountains, and in appeasing the spirits of the dead game. And so did he, really, despite his technical education.

"So, what do you do, Mark?"

"Molecular biochemistry, Ph.D., in fact."

"What's that mean?"

"Oh, figuring out how life happens. Like how does a bear smell so well," he went on, lying. "It can be interesting, but my real life is coming out to places like this, hunting, meeting people who really understand the game better than I do. Guys like you," Mark concluded, with a salute of his glass. "What about you?"

"Ah, well, retired now. I made some of my own. Would you believe geologist for an oil company?"

"Where'd you work?"

"All over the world. I had a good nose for it, and the oil companies paid me a lot for finding the right stuff, y'know? But I had to give it up. Got to the point-well, you fly a lot, right?"

"I get around," Mark confirmed with a nod.

"The brown smudge," Foster said next.

"Huh?"

Uptown got it's hustlers
The bowery got it's bums
42nd Street got Big Jim Walker
He's a pool-shootin' son of a gun
Yeah, he big and dumb as a man can come
But he stronger than a country hoss
And when the bad folks all get together at night
You know they all call big Jim "Boss", just because
And they say

You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger
And you don't mess around with Jim

Well outta south Alabama come a country boy
He say I'm lookin' for a man named Jim
I am a pool-shootin' boy
By name 'a Willie McCoy
But down home they call me Slim
Yeah I'm lookin' for the king of 42nd Street
He drivin' a drop top Cadillac
Last week he took all my money
And it may sound funny
But I come to get my money back
And everybody say Jack don't you know

You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger
And you don't mess around with Jim

Well a hush fell over the pool room
Jimmy come boppin' in off the street
And when the cuttin' was done
The only part that wasn't bloody
Was the soles of the big man's feet, ooh
And he was cut in about a hundred places
And he were shot in a couple more
And you better believe
There come another kind of story
When big Jim hit the floor now they say

Nation IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Astronauts Take a Break From Needles

October 25, 1993 From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The space shuttle Columbia's astronauts got a respite from being poked with needles as their two-week medical research mission neared the halfway point. officials at Florida's Kennedy Space Center said. "We are very happy up here," shuttle commander John Blaha said. "There are no blood draws." Columbia's rats weren't so lucky--blood was drawn from veins in the tails of five of the 48 rodents on board. The five had been injected with iron and iodine so researchers can measure red blood cell production and destruction. Astronauts become somewhat anemic in space because of red blood cell loss. Researchers hope to learn how to prevent this condition as a result of the experiments.

Chang aimed his rifle in the direction of the red, one-story restaurant. Beyond the patio, he spotted why Larsen was alarmed.

"Looks like more than one person," said Chang.

"I count three," said Larsen. "They don't attack in mobs, right?"

Up until now, all of the attacks had been perpetrated by lone assailants, which made sense given the virus's neurological impact. The impulsive, violent behavior associated with temporal lobe deterioration was individualistic, directed at whatever or whoever caught the infected victim's attention.

At least that was what the limited scientific observations of diseases that target the temporal lobe had indicated. Limited being the operative term. Most cases occurred in single patients that never came in contact with other similarly affected patients. There was no telling what might happen if victims of low-level deterioration merged.

"It appears they are capable of attacking en masse," said Larsen. "And covering their approach. Thankfully, she was a little slow on the draw."

The implication was both groundbreaking and devastating. The infected population was not only capable of cooperating in groups, but of higher level functioning.
