How You Do It Is Up To You

In recent days a new sense of certainty has formed in my mind.

Thomas Reagan is dead. I've speculated about that before.

I've been thinking in recent days that I exist as some sort of 4th generation version of Thomas Reagan, the original.

I've speculated often about 3/16/2013.

In recent days, I've been thinking that my predecessor, the version of Kerry Burgess that lived the secret, fantastic life in the 1990s and later, is the one who created me in 2013 in this form as an old man.

He lived his life under the direction of Thomas Reagan. Now I'm under his direction. Somehow. With technology beyond human comprehension. That's how he communicates with me, that's how I was created.

Those predecessors of mine found their purpose. The future will answer my questions.

I maintain his primary task for me, sitting here at this desk everyday, searching for the final detail I believe I need, will help precisely 1 other person. When that task is solved then I will be left with a sense of accomplishment and I will be freed.

'It's been very rewarding for me': Veterans' lives changed by fly fishing

Project Healing Waters helps disabled veterans through fly fishing around the world, including right here in Spokane.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Lick the finger, grab the fir, twist the thread, repeat. That's the drill for the group of seniors sitting in the CLC dining hall at Spokane's Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center.

Tying flies is a relaxing task, but the room isn't quiet. Questions ring around the room as the group learns the precise technique of making thread bugs.

Vietnam War veteran Steve Gump makes creating them look easy, but it's been years of practice to get to this point.

"It gets me out of my head, the fly tying. I'm focused on tying a fly versus other thoughts intruding," Gump said.

Gump was in the U.S. Army for two years, serving in Vietnam for one of them. He said coming back to the states after being immersed in war was difficult, because there was no help readjusting.

There's where the Project Healing Waters program, which helps disabled veterans across the world, came into play.

"I isolated myself from everybody, everything for so many years," Gump said.

After moving back into civilian life, Gump said he struggled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. But fly fishing every week has helped him change his life for the better.

He isn't the only one, as fellow vet Debbie Crewdson also said the fly fishing program has helped her after initially being scared to start.

"I was terrified, because I didn't know what I was getting into," Crewdson said.

But after those initial fears subsided, Crewdson too found herself at home while fly fishing.

She also became pretty good at it - on an international level.

"I was the 2017 fly tier of the year," Crewdson said. "It was awesome."

At the end of the day though, the best reward is seeing their hard work pay off.

"When you catch your first fish on your own tied fly, it feels so good," Gump said. "It's like you've won all the awards in the world, and it's been very rewarding for me."

Quotes

Jenny: [seated at the booth] ... so my question is, 'Can I have a partner?' - and he's really cute.

The Man: So, you want the cute guy, who lives in his car, to help you rob the banks.

Jenny: Yeah. You think that's a bad idea?

The Man: Jenny, I think people do what they do. You know how much money you need to rob, how you do it is up to you.

Description

This spacecraft, the first of a series of spacecraft used to investigate the means for manned space flight, contained scientific instruments, a television system, and a self-sustaining biological cabin with a dummy of a man. The spacecraft was designed to study the operation of the life support system and the stresses of flight. The spacecraft radioed both extensive telemetry and prerecorded voice communications. After four days of flight, the reentry cabin was separated from its service module and retrorockets were fired, but because of an incorrect attitude the spacecraft did not reenter the atmosphere.

U.S. Army Lt. Gen. John Norton Dies at 86

By Matt Schudel

Washington Post Staff Writer

Wednesday, December 15, 2004; Page B05

John Norton, 86, an Army lieutenant general who, as a young officer, parachuted into Normandy on D-Day and later helped pioneer the Army's use of helicopters in battle, died Dec. 6 of cancer at his home in Basye, Va.

Gen. Norton, who was known as Jack, spent nearly 40 years in the Army. He joined in the mid-1930s and, after two years as an enlisted man, won an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy.

In the late 1940s, Gen. Norton assisted Army Gen. James M. Gavin in planning policies to coordinate airborne activities with the newly formed Air Force. From 1950 to 1953, he was executive officer to Army Secretary Frank Pace Jr. He spent the next several years in Yugoslavia, administering a federal aid program.

After receiving certification as an airplane and helicopter pilot in 1956, Gen. Norton had a major role in shaping aviation within the Army. In 1962, he was a member of the Howze Board, directed by Lt. Gen. Hamilton Howze, that devised the Army's modern doctrine of using airpower in wartime. Among other things, it outlined the future use of helicopters in combat.

Gen. Norton became commanding general of the Army's 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam in 1966, putting into practice the air cavalry recommendations he had helped frame four years before.
