"N.C.I.S."

Well, this is slightly interesting to me.

Tomorrow is the premiere of the 17th season of that "NCIS" television series.

I don't really want to watch it, which is nothing new, but yet I am seriously compelled to watch it.

As Spirits Fly With Atlantis, Delays a Mir Inconvenience : Space: The shuttle pierces a blue sky after Florida storms scratched two launch dates. Linkup with Russian station is on track for Thursday.

June 28, 1995 K.C. COLE TIMES SCIENCE WRITER

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. — The space shuttle Atlantis cracked open a robin's-egg-blue Florida sky with a deafening roar Tuesday afternoon as hundreds of spectators and NASA officials cheered and sighed with collective relief.

This is to be the first of seven planned dockings, all to test procedures and equipment for the international space station, a partnership among Russia, the United States, Europe, Japan and Canada. Construction is due to begin in 1997, with occupancy scheduled for 2002.

Soon after launch, Atlantis began a series of rocket firings designed to put it in roughly the same orbit as Mir. Today crew members will continue to line up their orbit and will activate Spacelab, where experiments are stowed. They will also check out equipment and cameras for the docking.

On Thursday, they will drift up toward Mir. The docking itself, Gibson said, will be a "long, slow, laborious process."

It was the dark of the moon
On the sixth of June
And a Kenworth pullin' logs
Cab over Pete with a refer on
And a Jimmy haulin' hogs
We was headin' for bear
On 'I-1-0
'Bout a mile out Shakey Town
I says, Pig Pen this here's the Rubber Duck
And I'm about to put the hammer down

'Cause we got a little 'ole convoy
Rockin' through the night
Yeah, we got a little 'ole convoy
Ain't she a beautiful sight
C'mon and join our Convoy
Ain't nothin' gonna get in our way
We gonna roll this truckin' convoy
'Cross the USA

Convoy

Yeah, breaker Pig Pen this here's the Duck
And uh, you wanna back off them hogs
Uh, ten-four 'bout five mile or so
Ten-Roger them hogs is gettin' intense up here

By the time we got into Tulsa Town
We had eighty-five trucks in all
But they's a road block up on the clover leaf
And them bears was wall to wall
Yeah, them smokies as thick as bugs on a bumper
They even had a bear in the air
I says, callin' all trucks
This here's the Duck
We about to go a huntin' bear

'Cause we got a little 'ole convoy
Rockin' through the night
Yeah, we got a great big convoy

Uh, negatory Pig Pen you're still too close
Yeah, them hogs is startin' to close up my sinuses
Mercy sakes, you'd better back off another ten

Well, we rolled up Innerstate fourty-four
Like a rocket sled on rails
We tore up all of our swindel sheets
And left 'em settin' on the scales
By the time we hit that Shy Town
Them bears was a gettin' smart
They'd brought up some reinforcements
From the Illinois national guard
There's armored cars and tanks and jeeps
And rigs of every size
Yeah, them chicken coops was full of bears
And choppers filled the skies
Well, we shot the line
We went for broke
With a thousand screamin' trucks
And eleven long haired Friends of Jesus
In a Chartreuse microbus

Yeah, Rubber Duck 'tis Sod Buster
C'mon there
Yeah, Ten-Four Sod Buster
Listen, you wanna put that microbus
In behind that suicide jockey
Yeah, he's haulin' dynamite
And he needs all the help he can get

Well, we laid a strip for the Jersey Shore
Prepared to cross the line
I could see the bridge was lined with bears
But I didn't have a doggone dime
I says, Pig Pen this here's the Rubber Duck
We just ain't a gonna pay no toll
So we crashed the gate doin' 98
I says let them truckers roll
Ten-Four

Astronauts Undergo More Tests Aboard Joined Spacecraft

July 03, 1995 From Associated Press

NASA has never had an opportunity to study such long-duration space fliers, and consequently wants to know everything about Thagard and cosmonauts Vladimir Dezhurov and Gennady Strekalov.

"I know they are tired at the end of the day. It's a long day," Sullivan said. "But I think they truly believe in the work that's being done, and they're excited about the results."

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Russian space agency tested the communication systems on Atlantis, Mir and the Soyuz capsule attached to Mir on Sunday in preparation for the undocking Tuesday.

Thagard, who turns 52 today, said that while he is looking forward to leaving Mir, it has been a memorable four months.

"I joked with these guys . . . you call for a taxi and wait forever," he said. "But the fact is, [Thursday's docking] was an emotional experience, one of the highest, I guess, of my life. I'm awfully glad to be here, and I'm really looking forward to seeing my family."

Stargate SG-1 - Children of the Gods - television series premiere Season 1 Episode 1 - Sunday 27 July 1997

(from internet transcript)

Cut to the SGC corridors as O'Neill walks down the hallway, pulling on his jacket. He starts to round a bend, but hesitates, spotting something up ahead. Daniel is leaning against the wall, staring into space. O'Neill approaches him.

United States Air Force colonel Jack O'NEILL: Hey.

Daniel nods. There's a moment of silence.

Doctor Daniel JACKSON: They don't know what to do with me... and I don't know what to do with myself.

O'Neill punches him lightly on the shoulder.

O'NEILL: Come on. Let's get out of here.

He turns and heads for the exit, pausing at the turn. Daniel hesitates, then follows him out.

O'Neill's house. O'Neill pulls two bottles of beer out of the fridge, then takes them into the living room. Daniel is standing by the fireplace, and O'Neill enters as Daniel is blowing his nose.

O'NEILL: Nice catch.

JACKSON: Thank you. Sorry. Gate travel always seems to make my allergies... (blows nose again, sniffs, wipes eyes) Sorry.

He takes the beer O'Neill offers and uncaps it.

O'NEILL: So... you were saying.

JACKSON: Anyway, um... as soon as you were gone and they realized they were free, Abydos was - was their world for the taking...

As Daniel speaks, O'Neill sits down on the couch, uncapping his beer.

O'NEILL: Had a little party, did you?

JACKSON: Oh, yeah. You know, big, big, big party. They treated me like their savior, it was, um... embarrassing.

O'NEILL: It's amazing you turned out so normal.

Chapter 9

The youth fell back in the procession until the tattered soldier was not in sight. Then he started to walk on with the others.

But he was amid wounds. The mob of men was bleeding. Because of the tattered soldier's question he now felt that his shame could be viewed. He was continually casting sidelong glances to see if the men were contemplating the letters of guilt he felt burned into his brow.

At times he regarded the wounded soldiers in an envious way. He conceived persons with torn bodies to be peculiarly happy. He wished that he, too, had a wound, a red badge of courage.

from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: August 1, 2006

As I was riding the bus to the VA today, I remembered again, I think I thought of this late last night,

Since I thinking that actually occured to me, I wonder why I think sometimes about the drill going into my hand since the scars seem to support that it went through my hand, if that even happened at all. I told my doctor today that as the person I used to be, the memory is probably harder to relive than it was to actually live through. It's not really bothering me all that much but some times these things really give me a jolt. I would have gone insane if Microsoft had been successful in suddenly restoring all these memories back into my brain.

from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: 09/12/08 5:19 AM
I had some kind of dream about being on a bus but there only seemed to be one seat on the bus or something like that. That is confusing now that I think more about it after waking up. But that particular scene that I remember among many others I do not seemed to be heavy on aviation. There was dialog about a blue flight suit. There was dialog with air traffic controllers and there was some dialog about how the aircraft we were flying in was a bumblebee, although it was only referred to in the dream a a bee. After waking up, the flight suit reminds me of the Blue Angels flight suit

from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: 11/08/07 10:50 PM
I can't remember now all the details in the dream, but I had a very clear and detailed dream a few hours ago where I was wearing a NASA astronaut flight suit. I remember thinking about details of that flight suit. It was orange and I remember thinking that it was similar to a standard U.S. Navy flight suit but the astronaut flight suit had the metal collar on it for the pressurized helmet. There were other details I can't quite articulate now. I can still visualize myself wearing that flight suit and I was walking through the streets in a city but I don't recognize where I was. I can vaguely remember seeing some other people there. I don't recognize the city but it reminds me of walking through the streets of Seattle. There might be other details that I have forgotten.

posted by Kerry Burgess - H.V.O.M at 2:28 AM Wednesday, April 18, 2007

In another part of the dream, I was riding in the back of a metro bus. There were people on there I recognized from that past few years. I feel there is a lot to that part of the dream I cannot remember. One person indicated he heard I once had lipo-suction and I explained that I had actually had my memories suppressed. I think that detail about lipo-suction isn’t about lipo-suction, rather it is just supposed to be a clue to remind me of a conversation I had with someone about 8 years ago and so I would remember that person even though I didn't see her in the dream. There was a lot to that part I cannot remember and I wish I could remember it all. One interesting part of the dream is that I would sometimes catch a reflection in the bus window glass that appeared to be a U.S. Navy pilot wearing a helmet and equipment as though he was sitting in the cockpit of an aircraft. I looked around to see where that reflection was coming from, but I never did see that person sitting there on the bus.

Two Spokane & Inland Empire Railroad Co. trains collide northwest of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, with disastrous results, on July 31, 1909.

By Daryl C. McClary Posted 7/31/2005 HistoryLink.org Essay 7403

On Saturday, July 31, 1909, 16 passengers are killed and more than 100 are injured and maimed when two electric interurban trains owned by the Spokane & Inland Empire Railroad Company collide head-on at Gibbs, Idaho, approximately two miles northwest of Coeur d'Alene (some 30 miles from Spokane). The trains, linking Spokane with Coeur d'Alene, are carrying an estimated 600 passengers who are on their way to bid for Indian reservation lands. During this land rush, crowds are so large that the railroad is operating special trains on open schedules, running every 15 to 20 minutes. On a single-track electric railway, it is a blueprint for disaster.

Homestead Act of 1909

In February 1909, Congress made available to the public, under the provisions of the Homestead Act, 668,000 acres of federal land located on three Indian reservations: the Coeur d’Alene Reservation in Idaho, the Flathead Reservation in Montana, and the Spokane Reservation in Washington. The U. S. Treasury Department, General Land Office, designated the courthouse in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, as the headquarters for the lottery and Judge James W. Witten as the Superintendent of Opening.

Starting at midnight July 15, and lasting until midnight August 5, 1909, eligible persons had 22 days to register in Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, and Missoula and submit a notarized application card by mail in a special blue envelope, for a chance to file a claim for a homestead. There was a wild rush to register, flooding the “Inland Empire” with thousands of land-seekers. The central land office in Coeur d’Alene received 286,848 applications for 4,160 available claims, exceeding the famous Oklahoma land run of 1889.

The Spokane & Inland Empire Railroad Company, incorporated in Washington state in 1906, was an alliance of small, local interurban railroads linking Spokane and surrounding communities with Lake Coeur d'Alene, a popular resort and recreational area. Electric interurban railroads often had three or more cars coupled together in a train. The cars had platforms in the front and rear with seating in the center section. Platforms were standing room only. Although a car might have a seating capacity of only 50 or 60 passengers, it could carry at least that many more standing in the aisle and on the platforms. Open streetcars hauled even more passengers hanging onto the outside of the car.

During the 22-day registration period crowds became so large that the Spokane & Inland Empire Railroad operated special trains on open schedules, running every 15 to 20 minutes. No restrictions were placed on the number of passengers allowed on board the cars. People occupied every available space: window sills, coach roofs, cowcatchers and atop the running gear. The company daily transported 6,000 to 10,000 passengers and on one day counted 14,000 fares. The Great Northern and Northern Pacific Railroads also ran several extra trains per day for the land rush.

The Catastrophe

At about 4:35 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, 1909, special train No. 5, westbound to Spokane with three cars, crashed head-on with the regular train No. 20, eastbound with four cars, at the La Crosse siding (now Gibbs, Idaho) approximately two miles northwest of Coeur d’Alene. The two trains were carrying an estimated 600 passengers between them.

The motormen, James Delaney in No 20 and Edgar E. Campbell in No 5, caught sight of each other when the trains were 800 feet apart, too late to prevent the collision. Train No. 20 came to a complete stop in 200 feet, and people in the lead car began jumping for their lives. Train No 5 attempted to stop as well, but the air brakes on the overloaded train failed. The special train ran into the regular train at about 20 miles per hour. The impact telescoped the two lead cars into each other, immediately killing 12 passengers riding on the front platform of train No 5 and severely injuring and maiming more than 100 other people.

Help arrived quickly from Coeur d'Alene. As doctors treated the severely injured, workers from the nearby Stack-Gibbs lumber mill kept busy with jackscrews, axes, and wrecking bars, clearing out debris and rescuing trapped passengers. The Spokane & Inland Empire Railroad Company dispatched a special train from Spokane with doctors, nurses, and medical supplies to care for and transport casualties.

Most of the critically injured were rushed to hospitals in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene. Others were cared for in nearby homes. Twelve dead bodies were taken to local funeral parlors to await identification. Four victims died a few days later in Coeur d’Alene Hospital.

The Investigation

On Monday, August 2, 1909, the Spokane & Inland Empire Railroad Company publicly asked for a full investigation, acknowledging full legal responsibility for the accident and urging injured passengers to submit their claims early for a quick settlement. This same day, Kootenai County Coroner Frank Wenz convened an inquest to investigate the cause of the tragedy.

At the inquest, Superintendent R. C. Bowdish testified that the Spokane & Inland Empire Railroad Company operated a single-track electric railway between Spokane and Coeur d’Alene with traffic flowing briskly in both directions. It was operated under standard railroad rules with regular trains having the right-of-way over all special or extra trains. Regular trains ran on fixed timetables while special trains were governed by telegraphic orders from a dispatcher in Spokane. Bowdish said that unless there were specific orders to the contrary, it was required that a special train be clear of the main line at any point five minutes before the regular train was due at that point according to the time table. Should a regular train be late, the special train must keep the track clear until it arrives. Siding tracks were designated as meeting points allowing trains to pass safely. Bowdish said that both motorman Edgar E. Campbell and conductor Horace G. Whittlesey of special train No. 5 were experienced railway men who had worked for the company for several years and knew the rules.

Testimony showed that on the day of the wreck, eastbound regular No. 20 was due at Coeur d’Alene at 4:12 p.m., but was running late because of the large crowds. Special train No. 5 pulled out of the Coeur d'Alene yard at about 4:30 p.m. without waiting for the regular train to arrive. This caused the accident. A large part of the company’s testimony was directed toward showing that the brakes on both trains were in good working order and that overcrowding the cars was unavoidable.

The evidence included a bedside statement at Coeur d'Alene Hospital from critically injured Edgar E. Campbell, motorman of train No. 5, who claimed he had orders from the train dispatcher to meet the eastbound regular train No. 20 at the La Crosse siding, allowing it to pass. Campbell stated he saw train No. 20 just after departing the yard. He immediately shut off the power and applied the emergency air brakes. The train was slowing when the system lost air pressure, releasing the brakes. Campbell said he attempted to reverse the motor but was unable to stop the train in time to prevent the collision.

Expert witnesses testified that the air brakes should have stopped the train inside of 300 feet had they been working properly. The air-brake system was destroyed in the wreck, so the cause of the failure could not be determined. Other testimony showed that Campbell and Whittlesey misunderstood the dispatch and should have waited for regular train No 20 to arrive at Coeur d’Alene before leaving the yard.

Verdict and Aftermath

On Friday afternoon, August 6, 1909, the corner's jury returned their verdict, laying the blame on the Spokane & Inland Empire Railroad Company's operating procedures. The jury determined that although the special train had no right to leave the Coeur d’Alene station until the eastbound regular train had arrived, it pulled out, intending to wait on the La Cross siding at the edge of the yards. Although against the rules, this had become the standard practice during the land rush. Motorman Campbell unintentionally ran past the siding switch, causing the collision.

Edgar E. Campbell, who had his pelvis crushed, limbs broken and one leg amputated, was forced to sue the Spokane & Inland Empire Railroad Company in federal court to recover damages for personal injuries. At issue was whether the train’s defective air brakes or Campbell’s unauthorized departure from the station was the immediate cause of the accident. The case went to trial and the jury returned a general verdict in favor of the plaintiff Campbell, who was awarded $7,500 in damages. However there were special findings, which determined that both the motorman and the brake malfunction caused the wreck. The company appealed the verdict based on the special findings, but the judgment was affirmed by the Circuit Court of Appeals and finally by the U. S. Supreme Court on June 12, 1916.

As luck would have it, not one of the victims killed or injured in the train wreck who registered for the lottery was selected for a chance to claim a homestead. The Spokane & Inland Empire Railroad Company made huge profits during the 1909 land run, but lost most of it in damage settlements. The company survived the 1909 crisis and continued doing business until January 9, 1919, when it went into receivership.

Dahl and Crissman report a June 21, 1947, explosion of a flying saucer over Maury Island on or after June 26, 1947.

By Walt Crowley Posted 1/01/2000 HistoryLink.org Essay 2068

On or after June 26, 1947, Harold Dahl and Fred Crissman report the explosion on June 21, 1947, of a giant doughnut-shaped “flying saucer” near Maury Island in Puget Sound. They make the report after another sighting makes national news on June 26, 1947. Although exposed as a clumsy hoax, publication of the “Maury Island Mystery” in 1952 feeds rumors of sinister “men in black” and a government cover-up of UFO evidence that persist in science fiction and the popular imagination today.

Perhaps the strangest tale of the original 1947 rash of flying saucer sightings was told by two Tacoma timber salvagers. As later published by Kenneth Arnold and Ray Palmer (The Coming of the Saucers, 1952), Harold Dahl reported observing six large “doughnut-shaped” vehicles while boating near Maury Island on June 21, 1947. One appeared distressed and spewed chunks of debris that rained on Dahl's boat, killing his dog and injuring his son. After taking shelter on the island, Dahl returned to Tacoma and showed the evidence to his employer, Fred Crissman.

Shortly after Kenneth Arnold's June 24, 1947, encounter with “flying saucers” over the Cascades made national headlines (on June 26), Crissman offered two fragments of the alleged UFO to pulp science fiction magazine publisher Ray Palmer. Dahl also said that a mysterious “man dressed in a black suit” had menaced him and fogged his photographs of the incident.

Palmer retained Kenneth Arnold to investigate, and he in turn called in two U.S. Army specialists who had followed up on his own UFO report. They took a box of “evidence” for examination but died when their B-25 airplane crashed on August 1, 1947, en route from Tacoma to San Francisco. The Tacoma Times reported that the plane might have been “sabotaged or shot down” to prevent inspection of its cargo.

The FBI immediately began an investigation, and Dahl and Crissman confessed that they had fabricated the flying saucer story. The “debris” consisted of bits of scrap and pumice from a Maury Island beach. The U.S. Army and survivors confirmed that the plane crash was caused by an engine fire. Despite this, the dramatic 1952 account of the “Maury Island Mystery” spawned persistent rumors that “men in black” and a government conspiracy are suppressing the truth about flying saucers.

Update: In April 2007, the Seattle Museum of Mysteries arranged for an analysis of debris recovered from the B-25 crash scene. Preliminary findings indicated that mineral remains were ordinary igneous rocks or, possibly, fragments of a meteor.

Investigation of Maury Island UFO ‘Incident’ haunted by coincidence

By Jake Ellison on March 15, 2015 at 12:33 PM

Earlier this year, I set out to do a simple follow up to a 2013 story about a couple of local guys and their UFO movie called “The Maury Island Incident.” But soon after my first interview with the moviemakers, I found myself on a little trip through the looking glass into a world where coincidence spawns suspicion, and fact and myth get all tangled up.

First, though, the movie. It is about a UFO sighting that itself got all tangled up in lies, manipulation, recantation, 1947 FBI memos, a B-25 plane crash and, possibly, the first encounter with the infamous and mysterious “Men in Black.” We first wrote about it under the headline: ‘The Maury Island Incident’ movie revisits UFO frenzy, rumors of a coverup.

Since then, moviemakers Scott Schaefer and Steve Edmiston have had some success with “The Maury Island Incident.” The 30-minute movie is a moody deep-dive into the June 21, 1947, UFO sighting from a boat in the Puget Sound just off the island. It mainly revolves around the interaction between the boat’s pilot, Harold Dahl, and a dark-suited man who knows more than he should and wants Dahl to clam up about the UFO.

The short version of Dahl’s story is that he, his teenage son and others on the boat saw six doughnut-shaped disks over Puget Sound. One of the disks was in trouble and rained burning fragments that killed his dog and injured his kid.

After a few weeks of intense scrutiny over the story, Dahl said it was a hoax — but the moviemakers wonder if the real hoax was that Dahl said it was a hoax. They’ve found declassified FBI documents that state variously: Dahl “did not admit to (name blacked out) that his story was a hoax but only stated that if questioned by authorities he was going to say it was a hoax because he did not want any further trouble in the matter.”

“As a lawyer,” says the movie’s writer and Seattle lawyer Edmiston, “I’m thinking: That’s my case. And that case is: This is a hoax only because of the convenience of somebody trying to make this horrible event go away. And I think that’s interesting, really interesting.”

But more on that later … right now, we’ll just note that the duo got a grant from Washington Filmworks, have shown it at many film festivals (named “Best UFO Short Film of the Year” at the biggest UFO-focused one), made a deal with Seattle’s IndieFlix to publish it in shorts as a web series and then got their series picked up by Hulu. They’re working on creating a TV series.

Enter the FBI memos and Jack B Wilcox

But, when I settled in to do a brief story on the movie’s latest successes … a simple question derailed me for a spell: Did the FBI agent who wrote the declassified FBI memos central to the movie even exist?

I can’t delve into the ‘truth’ of whether Dahl’s story was a hoax or his claiming it was a hoax was the real hoax, because while the truth may be out there, I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to find it. But I hit the internet to simply find out if the author of those 1947 memos — FBI agent “Jack B Wilcox” — even existed.

After about 20 minutes, I ran into an obituary for an FBI agent named Jack Billings Wilcox, who joined the FBI in 1938 and eventually ended up in Seattle with his FBI-employed wife. Could that be my man? How would I know? While there can’t be too many FBI agents of his age with Seattle ties with that name … it’s still not a direct link.

But then a haunting feeling started to seep in as I looked through the looking glass at the first line in the obituary: “Jack Billings Wilcox died Monday, February 2, 2004, in Kennewick, WA.”

First, I was born in Kennewick. And, I was raised in Billings, Mont. Okay, not that big a deal … but wait!

Mr. Wilcox signed his famous UFO report (below) “J B Wilcox.” My initials and my father’s initials (which he had painted on his trucks) are … “J B”!

Fine, still nothing to put aluminum foil over my head about, but I couldn’t help but feel I was on the right track, what track exactly I couldn’t say or why or to what end … but I had to keep following the breadcrumbs … if that’s what they were.

Then the obit said Wilcox had built a house on Brown Island near Friday Harbor … My aunt owned a restaurant in Friday Harbor a few decades ago. Geez. I put the story away for a few days. But then came back to it to see if I could answer that one other question: How can I tie this Jack B Wilcox with the signatory on that FBI document?

The most secretive man you’d ever meet

The obit also listed Wilcox’s surviving family members. I went internet hunting and eventually found his surviving kids. His daughter (she’s a nurse and my aunt is a nurse!) didn’t follow up with me for the story after our first conversation, so I’m leaving her out of it.

But Wilcox’ son, Mark Wilcox lives in Woodinville and had this to say almost immediately when I called: “My father and mother were probably the most secretive, closed-mouth people that you would ever know.”

Consequently, he didn’t really know much about his parents’ service years. He wasn’t even sure his mother was in the FBI. However, could he link the obit, his father and the Maury Island incident?

“The only reason that I am even familiar with the issue you’re discussing,” he progressed, “is my son was on the internet trying to find something out about his grandfather, because I couldn’t tell him, and he found something …” about some UFO sighting.

First, Mark connected his father with the obit … so, that’s one. And, then the kicker: Could he have been the agent who signed a 14-page memo recounting the entire incident and his interviews with Dahl and others? Mark and I agreed there couldn’t be very many agents with that name, for sure. But that’s not a direct link.

Then it hit me … I sent him a copy of the famous memo and … “That’s his signature.”

Bingo.

What we know about Jack

“When it came to what they did and what they knew,” Mark said, “it was almost like when they left the bureau they maybe signed something that said, I won’t talk about anything that I did. So, I just don’t know. I wish I knew. I know that they had to have lived really interesting lives. I thought my mother was a clerk or something. To be perfectly honest, I do not know.”

His father loved the outdoors, loved to sail, was an “incredible woodworker” (Mark has several pieces of furniture his father made) and could be very focused. He started getting into shape when he was 60 years old in order to build that house on Brown Island.

“I mean this guy was really something,” Mark said. “I mean very determined, very focused, a very talented guy when it came to building stuff. … He was just the very focused kind of person you could imaging being somebody who could run the FBI for the region.”

What kind of a father was he?

“He was a great dad. Taught me how to play baseball, how to fish, how to do brick work, how to frame. Basically, everything I know how to do he taught me.”

When I asked if Mark had any photos of his dad, he said he had one fore sure. I told him I’d zoom to Woodinville and make a copy of it. But he called me back soon afterwards and said the photo must have been lost in a fire that had destroyed much of his belongings years earlier.

Wow. So, I was back to square one for a photo, but then found the one above, which Mark said was of his father. I sent it to him, and he thanked me for bringing at least that much of his father back to him. (Oh, and, a great deal of my own family history was lost in a flood!)

Wilcox the taskmaster

Below is a little tidbit from a 2007 interview for the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI with a retired agent that I unearthed just after talking with Mark. It sheds a little light on how our agent was perceived by his fellow agents:

To back up just a minute, during training we had a continuing reference made to the Seattle Office, warning us that it could be a difficult place to work. The SAC (Special Agent in Charge) at the time was known to be a stickler for performance and the rules and regulations.

His name was Jack Wilcox. Mr. Wilcox, I believe, was an accountant, and later became a banker. But they had a limerick that they kept repeating in training class.

“Jack be nimble,
Jack be quick,
Jack Wilcox is a –“

Put your own words.

(chuckle)

Back to reality … such as it is

I had a lot of fun with my little trip through the looking glass. Of course, all those coincidences don’t mean anything … unless … somehow they do. But, you can lose your mind and years of your life trying to get to the bottom of this kind of thing.

Just ask “Maury Island Incident” director/producer Scott Schaefer.

“I was a director on a show in the ’90s called ‘Sightings,’ ” a paranormal television series that was originally called “The UFO Report: Sightings.”

When he started working the show, he assumed he’d meet wackos as well as some interesting people. Then, while on an episode in Alabama about cow mutilations and living in a dumpy hotel, he became convinced that the mutilations were … well … special. A veterinarian had explained how whatever laser or high-heat tool that had been used on the cows wasn’t readily available technology, to say the least.

He also camped out at Area 51.

“I went down the rabbit hole of Ufology,” he said. “I started falling into this, which a lot of people do, where I became obsessed with it. This was before the internet, so I’m one of the early users of CompuServe. I’d bring my phone, PowerBook 140 and dial up at night and go onto CompuServe forums on UFOs.

“Anyway, it took my life over for two years.”

What about now, what about the whole Maury Island UFO deal?

“I think something happened,” Schaefer said. “I don’t know if it was aliens or a military test, but something did happen because it was a pretty detailed description that didn’t change. And it was unusual in that it happened at 2 p.m., so it was not a misidentified aircraft.”

And about Dahl’s insistence that it was a hoax?

“If it is a hoax, we’re dealing with some of the best story tellers of the 20th Century, because they created the mythology of the ‘man in black’ with this hoax. Until then, there had never been a ‘man in black’ associated with any kind of unusual sightings, flying discs. This is the first one. So they (Dahl and his cohorts on the boat) created one of the most fantastic antagonists in science fiction history.”

Edmiston chimed in:

“I don’t have an opinion about what happened, but something happened that caused them to come up with a fantastic story. I think the people that just make stuff up say, ‘Uh, well we were in the woods and we saw this thing.’ This is not that story. They came up with an incredibly complex detailed story.”

Now it’s your turn. Do you look to the skies? Do you scour the documents?

… or, just enjoy the film!

New trail will link 8 parks

Sat., June 14, 2008

By Amy Cannata

Work is under way on a new bike and pedestrian trail that will link Huetter Road to downtown Coeur d’Alene.

The Prairie Trail is being paved along an abandoned Union Pacific rail line owned by the North Idaho Centennial Trail Foundation. It is expected to be complete by July 1.

The five-mile, 16-foot-wide trail will connect to the Centennial Trail, link eight Coeur d’Alene parks and three Coeur d’Alene schools and provide a continuous path from Huetter Road, across the Rathdrum Prairie and down to Riverstone.

“It’s such a wonderful opportunity to connect all those neighborhoods together and to downtown,” said North Idaho Centennial Trail Foundation Director Charlie Miller.

Along the way the Prairie Trail connects the Kroc Center, Bluegrass Park, Ramsey Park, Lake City High School, Woodland Middle School and Skyway Elementary.

“It’s a great piece of trail to get for the city,” said Coeur d’Alene Parks Trail Coordinator Monte McCully.

Funding to pave the trail was raised by selling $400,000 in right-of-way for underground sewer lines to neighboring developments, Miller said.

The city and North Idaho Centennial Trail Foundation will celebrate the trail and three city parks on July 12 with a moving party starting at Bluegrass Park at 9 a.m., moving along to Ramsey Park at noon and then to Riverstone Park at 3 p.m.

McCully said the free event will feature music, food and a variety of activities. Participants can use the new trail to bike or walk between the different parks.

“A lot of people don’t know about all our parks,” he said. “This will give them a chance to see three of our parks.”

13. PARKS DAY CELEBRATION – JULY 12 (For Information Only)

Katie Sorensen, Urban Forestry Assistant, presented an overview of the Parks Day Celebration event on July 12. Three parks will be highlighted this year, Bluegrass, Ramsey and Riverstone. All of these parks can be accessed via the new Prairie Trail. The all-day event will begin at Bluegrass Park with a free breakfast, games, activities and prizes then move down to Ramsey for more food, activities, demonstrations and prizes. The final celebration will be held at Riverstone and would include entertainment, food, activities and a drawing for people who have visited all three parks for a final grand prize. Planning for this event is continuing.

Chairman Shellman asked about staffing and volunteers for the event. Katie replied that members of the Parks Day Celebration Committee along with other volunteers such as “Parks and Recreation Commissioners” would be manning each one of the parks.

Salesman

Also, "Salesman." I saw that in a dream while sleeping recently. I saw myself going through an induction process in the United States Marine Corps and I woke up understanding that I was dreaming of my actual experience in 1990. I saw a document that indicated I was being inducted to the United States Marine Corps with the officer grade of Chief Warrant Officer 2. I saw in the dream another document associated with my induction and that document indicated I had been assigned the informal name "Salesman."

Phil Bergman: We have to let everyone know. We have to call the NOAA.

Professor John Koestler: They already know. The announcement will come anytime now.
