Book 1, Chapter 22
Edward Keenan
It was in this confusion that many people attributed special meaning to ordinary things. Ed didn't believe dreams were magical, psychic gifts, divine province of the Gods, or anything other than the brain's hardwired response to stimuli. People who needed magic to explain science were simply not appreciative of the everyday magic of reality.

Edward Keenan
Still, even with his firm belief that psychic dreams were bullshit, he couldn't dismiss the *possibility* that someone could foresee things through some scientific means we had yet to comprehend. He'd once read a book by some scientist about quantum physics. Though the book was supposed to have been written for the layman, most of it was beyond Ed. The one thing he got from it, or at least he thought this was the scientist's point, was there is no past, present, or future, and all times co-exist in the same moment. In which case, perhaps some people were more tuned to such things - and saw these moments without realizing it, but our brains aren't wired to make sense of such things, as we're used to linear time, so our brains found other ways to make sense of the data - dreams.

Chechaquo
This is an excerpt from To Build A Fire that made an impression with me early on and has felt especially relevant for the past few years:
But all this--the mysterious, far-reaching hairline trail, the absence of sun from the sky, the tremendous cold, and the strangeness and weirdness of it all--made no impression on the man. It was not because he was long used to it. He was a new-comer in the land, a chechaquo, and this was his first winter. The trouble with him was that he was without imagination. He was quick and alert in the things of life, but only in the things, and not in the significances. Fifty degrees below zero meant eighty odd degrees of frost. Such fact impressed him as being cold and uncomfortable, and that was all. It did not lead him to meditate upon his frailty as a creature of temperature, and upon man's frailty in general, able only to live within certain narrow limits of heat and cold; and from there on it did not lead him to the conjectural field of immortality and man's place in the universe. Fifty degrees below zero stood for a bite of frost that hurt and that must be guarded against by the use of mittens, ear-flaps, warm moccasins, and thick socks. Fifty degrees below zero was to him just precisely fifty degrees below zero. That there should be anything more to it than that was a thought that never entered his head.

(from internet transcript)
[Titan V silo]
Captain PICARD: Isn't it amazing? This ship used to be a nuclear missile.
DATA: It is an historical irony that Doctor Cochrane would use an instrument of mass-destruction to inaugurate an era of peace.
(Picard feels the Titan V rocket)
PICARD: It's a boyhood fantasy, Data. I must have seen this ship hundreds of times in the Smithsonian, but I was never able to touch it.
DATA: Sir, does tactile contact alter your perception of the Phoenix?
PICARD: Oh, yes. For humans, touch can connect you to an object in a very personal way. It makes it seem more real.
DATA: I am detecting imperfections in the titanium casing. Temperature variations in the fuel manifold. It's no more real to me now than it was a moment ago.
TROI: Would you three like to be alone?
PICARD: What have you found out?
TROI: There's no sign of Cochrane anywhere in the complex.
PICARD: He has to be here. There was nothing more important to him than this ship. This flight. It was his dream.
TROI: Captain, we should consider the possibility that Doctor Cochrane was killed in the attack.
PICARD: Huh. If that's true then the future may die with him.

Why do I always remember that the speed of light is 186, 282 miles per second? Why do I have such a precise memory of that detail? Most times when you read about the speed of light, it is rounded off to 186, 000 mps. Why do I need such precision? And I still remember that pi is 3.1415926536 without looking it up. Why do I remember that?

Einstein showed Newton was wrong about gravity. Now scientists are coming for Einstein.
New research confirms Einstein's theory of gravity but brings scientists a step closer to the day when it might be supplanted by something new.
Aug. 3, 2019, 3:12 AM PDT
By Jeremy Deaton
Albert Einstein can explain a lot, but maybe not black holes. Scientists believe that within the inky depths of these massive celestial objects, the laws of the universe fold in on themselves, and the elegant model of gravity laid out in Einstein’s general theory of relativity breaks down.
They don't know precisely how or where that happens, but a new study brings them closer to the answer.
The study, to be published Aug. 16 in the journal Science, shows that gravity works just as Einstein predicted even at the very edge of a black hole — in this case Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy. But the study is just the opening salvo in a far-ranging effort to find the point where Einstein’s model falls apart.
"We now have the technological capacity to test gravitational theories in ways we've never been able to before,” study co-author Jessica Lu, an astrophysicist at the University of California, Berkeley, said. “Einstein's theory of gravity is definitely in our crosshairs."
That means we may be closer to the day when Einstein’s relativity is supplanted by some as-yet-undescribed new theory of gravity.
