Chapter 6

"I thought you were studying emergency medicine?" said Cabrera.

"I'm interested in a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship," she said, suddenly very aware that the entire room was focused on her.

I can recall some details about working for that company in Memphis during that six week period of time. We mostly went to a hospital there in downtown Memphis. St. Jude's I think that was. I know I've written about it before in my journal. I have also had the unmistakable sense of certainly that Phoebe worked there at some point and that was why I was there. Maybe she interned there as a medical doctor, I have wondered.

THE CHURCH

"Under The Milky Way"

Sometimes when this place gets kind of empty
Sound of their breath fades with the light
I think about the loveless fascination
Under the Milky Way tonight

Lower the curtain down in Memphis
Lower the curtain down all right
I got no time for private consultation
Under the Milky Way tonight

Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find

And it's something quite peculiar
Something that's shimmering and white
It leads you here despite your destination
Under the Milky Way tonight

Under the Milky Way tonight

Chapter 6

"We're not doing spinal taps," said Dr. Wu.

"Damn right we're not," said Dr. Owen. "We can send some patients on to radiology. Bring an anesthesiologist down for the spinal tap," said Cabrera.

"Not anymore. This group is shot," said Dr. Owen. "How much sleep have you logged in the past forty-eight hours?"

Dr. Cabrera started to calculate the number.

"The answer to that question is *not even fucking close to enough to mess with the spine*," stated Dr. Owens. "And I don't anticipate any of us getting any sleep soon. We've lost three doctors and six nurses from the overall rotation already."

"Lost?" said Dr. Hale.

Dr. Wu grimaced and shook his head. "Some just disappeared. Slipped away when nobody was looking. The others are sick. Same symptoms. Dr. Edwards is strapped to a bed in the psych wing. We didn't want to keep him here."

"That's where half of these patients should be right now," stated Dr. Owens.

"Jesus," said Dr. Hale. "Is anyone else...sick?"

"Good question," said Dr. Owens. "Dr. Edwards didn't give us much warning."

excerpt from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: October 4, 2006

10/4/2006 8:04 AM
After I awoke the first time last night after an extended period of sleep, I had more thoughts about Mars. I was thinking that I left some kind of low-powered voice transmission source on the surface. It is powered by solar panels but I can’t think of any other details about it.

The second time I awoke after a few hours sleep, I remembered a dream that seemed to occur just before I awoke. The first part is jumbled, but the other parts are remarkable somehow in the clarity of the images. There is just something about those dreams that I have to recognize. And since they occur just before I awake, I think that is also significant. The first part had something to do with Shaka Zulu, but I am not sure what. It may reflect my studies of that historical figure and it may also represent my interaction with people in Africa.

The part of the dream that is very clear though is after the Shaka Zulu part and I can see someone that I think is myself and I am blended into the landscape with what looks like a sniper rifle. Later I would start to think it was actually a laser designator. I was watching a car crossing a bridge and I was looking at the occupants of the car through the scope. At the same time, I was distracted because someone with me was in a knife fight nearby with some huge looking guy. I had to keep sight on the car though and could not do anything to help. He lost the fight and was eviscerated by the monstrous guy. The last image I have is of seeing those occupants of the car falling off the bridge and they seemed to be outside of the car.

A Test of Courage: Marie Curie and the 1911 Nobel Prize

Clinical Chemistry 57:4 (2011) 657

Someone, probably at the behest of Langevin, broke into Marie Curie and Paul Langevin’s pied-a-terre and stole intimate letters, and when Paul Langevin’s wife instituted legal action, she threatened to use the letters as part of her case in court. Although the court case was eventually dropped, an extremely disreputable, anti-Semitic scandal sheet got hold of and published excerpts from the letters anyway. In the beginning, many scientific friends rallied to Marie Curie’s defense. Albert Einstein wrote that he was “incensed over the way in which the rabble dares to react to you,” adding she should “simply stop reading that drivel. Leave it to the vipers it was fabricated for.” But after the letters were published, even some of Marie Curie’s colleagues were scandalized. The dean of the Faculty of Sciences at the Sorbonne planned to ask her to leave France.

In an uncanny coincidence, on November 7, 1911, just two days after the scandal broke in the French press, Reuters sent out a bulletin announcing that Marie Curie had just been awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry for her work in establishing the atomic weight of radium and isolating it in a metallic state. The Nobel Committee had made inquiries and concluded that the scandal was much ado about nothing. A member of the committee dismissed the allegations as “chicanery” and “lies.” But then the letters were published. And what’s more, following common French practices of the time, Paul Langevin felt it necessary to challenge the editor of l’Oeuvre, who published the letters and called him a coward, to a duel. The duel turned out to be a nonevent because the editor refused to fire his weapon—for the sake of the future of French science. But the spectacle proved too much for some members of the Nobel Committee. Citing the letters, and the “ridiculous duel of M. Langevin,” the scientist Svante Arrhenius wrote to Marie Curie, urging her not to come and accept the prize until she had cleared her name.

Marie Curie was deeply hurt that Arrhenius, whom she had considered to be a friend, had deserted her. But her reply to him was defiant: “The action you advise would appear to be a grave error on my part,” she wrote. “In fact the prize has been awarded for the discovery of Radium and Polonium. I believe there is no connection between my scientific work and the facts of my private life.”

On December 10 and 11, Marie Curie attended the Nobel ceremonies in Stockholm, accompanied by her sister Bronia and her daughter Ire`ne. Notwithstanding the fears of some members of the Swedish Academy that it would be embarrassing for Madame Curie to “receive the prize personally from King Gustaf,” she performed with her usual dignity. The ordeal she had been through seemed to make her more assertive in her formal remarks, and more expressive in her informal ones. At the banquet with King Gustaf, she spoke proudly of her own work. “Radioactivity is a very young science,” she told the gathering. “It is an infant that I saw being born, and I have contributed to raising with all my strength. . . . One could not have wished for a more perfect blessing on it than the Swedish Academy of Sciences has given in conferring three Nobel prizes, one in physics and two in chemistry to the four names of Henri Becquerel, Pierre Curie, Marie Curie and Ernest Rutherford.” It was perhaps Marie Curie’s bravest moment.
