Space Cookie Oven and Rodents Launch to Space on Powerful Antares Rocket

By Chelsea Gohd 10 hours ago Spaceflight [ Retrieved by Kerry Burgess, 5:50 PM, Saturday 11/02/2019 ]

The launch successfully blasted off this morning.

WALLOPS ISLAND, Va. — A space cookie oven launched with rodents to space today (Nov. 2) aboard the most powerful Antares rocket ever built.

At 9:59 a.m. EDT (1359 GMT) this morning, the Cygnus NG-12 spacecraft successfully launched to the International Space Station from Virginia Space's Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility. The launch carried about 8,200 lbs. (3,700 kilograms) of scientific experiments, hardware and supplies to the space station, where it will arrive on Monday (Nov. 4) to be grappled by NASA astronaut Jessica Meir who will be supported by fellow astronaut Christina Koch.

Of the new investigations headed to space, there are a few that have particularly caught the public's attention.

One of these experiments will bring the smell of fresh-baked cookies to the space station. A joint collaboration between Zero G Kitchen and NanoRacks has developed and built the first-ever oven designed to work in the microgravity environment on the space station. The astronauts on the station will conduct the first experiment with the oven by baking chocolate chip cookies. While food on the space station now is primarily reheated or heated with the addition of hot water, this will be the first instance of baking in space.

Another investigation, Microgravity as a Disruptor Of The 12-hour Circatidal Clock (Rodent Research-14) will use rodent models to study how phases of light and dark can affect liver health.

The AstroRad vest, another investigation that launched today, is a large, unique vest

The Twelve: A Novel (Book Two of the Passage Trilogy)

Justin Cronin

But her life, her real life, had been a secret from him.

Always these visits to his father brought these memories to the surface; by the time he left, he was often so dispirited, or else seething with unexpressed rage, that he could barely think straight. Fifty-seven years old, yet still he craved some flicker of acknowledgement.

He positioned the room's only chair in front of his father. The old man's head, bald as a baby's, was tipped at an awkward angle against his shoulder. Guilder retrieved a rag from the bedside table and wiped the spit from his chin. An open container of vanilla pudding sat on a tray with a flimsy metal spoon.

"So how you feeling, Pop? They treating you okay?"

Silence. And yet Guilder could hear his father's voice in his head, filling in the spaces.

"Are you kidding me? Look at me, for Christ's sake. I can't even take a proper shit. Everyone talking to me like I'm a child. How do you think I am, sonny boy?"

"I see you didn't eat your dessert. You want some pudding? How would that be?"

"Fucking pudding! That's all they give me around this place. Pudding for breakfast, pudding for lunch, pudding for dinner. The stuff's like snot.

Guilder tucked a spoonful between his father's teeth. Through some autonomic reflex, the old man smacked his lips and swallowed.

"Look at me. You think this is a picnic? Drooling on myself, sitting in my own piss?"

"Don't know if you've been following the news lately," Guilder said, delivering a second spoonful into his father's mouth. "There's something I thought you should know about."

"So? Say your piece and leave me alone."

But what did Guilder want to say? I'm dying? That everyone was dying, even if they didn't know it yet?

What purpose could this information possibly serve? A chilling thought occurred to him. What would become of his father when everyone was gone, the doctors and nurses and orderlies? With everything that had happened in the last few weeks, Guilder had been too preoccupied to consider this eventuality. Because the city was emptying out; soon, in weeks or even days, everyone would be running for their lives.

Not Your Average Delivery Vehicle

Just like people here on Earth, astronauts get shipments too! But not in the typical sense. 8,200 pounds of cargo, including supplies and scientific experiments, is on its way to the International Space Station thanks to Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus cargo spacecraft. This ‘package’ launched out of Wallops Flight Facility on Nov. 2, 2019 at 9:59 a.m. EDT. The investigations aboard the rocket range from research into human control of robotics in space to reprocessing fibers for 3D printing. Get ready, because these new and exciting experiments are arriving soon!

DESSERT, FRESH FROM THE OVEN

Everyone enjoys the aroma of fresh-baked cookies, even astronauts. On future long-duration space missions, fresh-baked food could have psychological and physiological benefits for crew members, providing them with a greater variety of more nutritious meals. The Zero-G Oven experiment examines heat transfer properties and the process of baking food in microgravity.

WRAITH HALL.

WRAITH Queen: What do you call yourself?

SUMNER: Colonel Marshall Sumner, United States Marine Corps.

WRAITH Queen: So little fear. Is it valour ... or ignorance?

SUMNER: We travelled through the Stargate as peaceful explorers.

WRAITH Queen: You must eat, yet you resist your hunger. Why?

SUMNER: Why have you taken my people prisoner?

WRAITH Queen: You trespassed upon our feeding ground.

SUMNER: Feeding ground?

WRAITH Queen: All living things must eat. In this I'm sure we are similar. You feel hunger even now -- I can sense it. Yet you resist. Why?

SUMNER: Why do you care?

WRAITH Queen: Hunger is distasteful.

SUMNER (looking at Toran's corpse): Looks to me like the food didn't agree with him.

WRAITH Queen: There we are quite dissimilar, Colonel Sumner. (She leans over Toran, running a long fingernail down his head.) We don't require our food to agree with us.

Hence the major problem with immortality, apart from the peculiar diet: everything began to bore you.

At such moments, the only thing that cheered him was taking stock of his accomplishments. Which were not inconsiderable; they had constructed a city literally from nothing. What excitement he'd felt in the early days. The ceaseless ring of hammers. The trucks returning from their journeys across an unmanned continent, bursting with the abandoned treasures of the old world. The hundreds of tactical decisions made daily, and the buzzing energy of the staff - men handpicked from among the survivors for their expertise. They had, in short, built a veritable brain trust from the human leavings of catastrophe. Chemists. Engineers. City planners. Ag scientists. Even an astronomer (who had come in surprisingly handy)
