Clifton Keith Hillegass, American publisher (b. April 18, 1918, Rising City, Neb.—d. May 5, 2001, Lincoln, Neb.), created Cliffs Notes, a widely popular series of literary study guides. Hillegass worked as a manager at the Nebraska Book Co. before publishing the first Cliffs Notes, a summary of Hamlet, in 1958. He eventually published more than 220 titles and sold more than 50 million Cliffs Notes worldwide. In 1998 Hillegass sold the company for $14 million.

The Watchers
NORFOLK, VIRGINIA
Intentions was a small second-floor office normally occupied by four officers. Shoehorning Toland in there was difficult, mainly because all the classified material had to be covered up while the civilian movers got the desk in place. When they finally left, Bob found he had just about enough space to get into and out of his swivel chair. The office door had a cipher lock with five rocker switches concealed in a steel container. Located in the northwest corner of CINCLANT headquarters, the office's barred windows overlooked a highway and little else. The drab curtains were closed anyway. Inside, the walls might have been painted beige once, but the plaster had whitened from underneath to give the office the sort of pallor expected in a yellow-fever ward.
The senior officer was a Marine colonel named Chuck Lowe, who had watched the moving-in process with a silent resentment that Bob only understood when the man got to his feet.
"I may never make it to the head now," Lowe grumped, sticking his cast around the corner of the desk. They shook hands.
"What happened to the leg, Colonel?"
"Mountain Warfare School out in California, day after Christmas, skiing on my own Goddamned time. The docs say you should never break the tibia close to the bottom," Lowe explained with an ironic smile. "And you never get used to the itching. Should have this thing off in another three or four weeks. Then I have to get used to running again. You know, I spent three years trying to break my ass out of intel, then I finally get my Goddamned regiment, and this happens. Welcome aboard, Toland. Why don't you grab us both a cup of coffee?"
There was pot atop the farthest filing cabinet. The other three officers, Lowe explained, were giving a briefing.
"I saw the write-up you gave CINCLANT. Interesting stuff. What do you think Ivan's up to?"
"It looks like he's increasing readiness across the board, Colonel -"
"In here, you can call me Chuck."
"Fine - I'm Bob."
"You do signal intelligence at NSA, right? You're one of the satellite specialists, I heard."
Toland nodded. "Ours and theirs, mostly ours. I see photos from time to time, but mostly I do signals work. That's how we twigged to the report on the four colonels. There has also been a fair amount of operational maneuvering done, more than usual for this time of year. Ivan's been a little freer with how his tankers drive around, too, less concern about running a battalion across a plowed field, for example."
"And you're supposed to have a look at anything that's unusual, no matter how dumb it seems, right? That gives you a pretty wide brief, doesn't it? We got something interesting along those lines from DIA. Have a look at these." Lowe pulled a pair of eight-by-ten photographs from a manila envelope and handed them to Toland. They seemed to show the same parcel of land, but from slightly different angles and different times of year. In the upper left corner was a pair of isbas, the crude huts of Russian peasant life. Toland looked up.
"Collective farm?"
"Yeah. Number 1196, a little one about two hundred klicks northwest of Moscow. Tell me what's different between the two."
Toland looked back at the photos. In one was a straight line of fenced gardens, perhaps an acre each. In the other he could see a new fence for four of the patches, and one patch whose fenced area had been roughly doubled.
"A colonel - army-type - I used to work with sent me these. Thought I'd find it amusing. I grew up on a corn farm in Iowa, you see."
"So Ivan's increasing the private patches for the farmers to work on their own, eh?"
"Looks that way."
"Hasn't been announced, has it? I haven't read anything about it." Toland didn't read the government's secret in-house publication, National Intelligence Digest, but the NSA cafeteria gossip usually covered harmless stuff like this. Intelligence types talked shop as any others.
"Just this one farm, maybe?"
"As a matter of fact, they've seen the same thing at five other places. But we don't generally use our reconsats for this sort of thing. They got this on a slow news day, I suppose. The important stuff must have been covered by clouds." Toland nodded agreement. The reconnaissance satellites were used to evaluate Soviet grain crops, but that happened later in the year. The Russians knew it also, since it had been in the open press for over a decade, explaining why there was a team of agronomists in the U.S. Department of Agriculture with Special Intelligence-Compartmented security clearance."
"Kind of late in the season to do that, isn't it?" I mean, will it do any good to give 'em this land this time of year?"
"I got these a week ago. I think they're a little older than that. This is about the time most of their farms start planting. It stays cold there quite a long time, remember, but high latitudes make up for it with longer summer days. Assume that this is a nationwide move on their part. Evaluate that for me, Bob." The colonel's eyes narrowed briefly.
"Smart move on their part, obviously. It could solve a lot of their food supply problems, particularly for - truck-farm stuff. I guess, tomatoes, onions, that sort of thing."
"Maybe. You might also note that this sort of farming is manpower-intensive but not machinery-intensive. What about the demographic aspect of the move?"
Toland blinked. There was a tendency in the U.S. Navy to assume that since they made their living by charging into machine-gun fire, Marines were dumb. "Most of the kokolzniki are relatively old folks. The median age is in the late forties, early fifties. So most of the private plots are managed by the older people, while the mechanized work, like driving the combines and trucks -"
"Which pays a hell of a lot better."

Quite a change from the last time, Toland thought. The Air Force had an E-3 Sentry operating out of Sondrestrom to protect the fleet, and four of their own E-2C Hawkeyes were also up. There was even an Army-manned ground radar just coming up on Iceland. Two Aegis cruisers were with the carriers, and a third with the amphibious force.
"You think they'll hit is first, or the 'phibs?" Admiral Jacobsen asked.
"That's a coin-toss, Admiral," Toland replied. "Depends on who gives the orders. Their navy will want to kill us first. Their army will want to kill the 'phibs."
Jacobsen crossed his arms and stared at the map display. "This close, they can come in from any direction they want."
They expected no more than fifty Backfires, but there were still plenty of older Badgers, and the fleet was only fifteen hundred miles from the Soviet bomber bases: they could come out with nearly maximum ordnance loads. To stop the Russians, the Navy had six squadrons of Tomcats, and six more of Hornets, nearly a hundred forty fighters in all. Twenty-four were aloft now, supported by tankers while the ground-attack aircraft pounded Russian positions continuously. The battleships had ended their first visit to the Keflavik area and were now in Hvalfjordur - Whale Bay - providing fire support to the Marines north of Bogarnes. The entire operation had been planned with the likelihood of a Russian air-to-surface missile attack in mind. There would be more vampires.

The loss of northern Norway had eliminated the utility of Realtime. The submarine was still on station gathering signal intelligence, but the task of spotting the outbound Russian bomber streams passed on to British and Norwegian patrol aircraft operating out of Scotland. One of the latter spotted a three-plane Vic of Badgers heading southwest and radioed a warning. The Russian aircraft were roughly seventy minutes from the fleet.

Again the Vampire call came in, and again Toland cringed. Twenty incoming missiles were plotted. The formation activated jammers and SAM systems, with a pair of Aegis cruisers on the threat axis. In seconds they were launching missiles, and the other SM2-equipped SAM ships added their own missiles to the "basket," allowing their birds to be guided by the Aegis computer systems. The twenty incoming missiles had ninety SM2s targeted on them. Only three got through the SAM cloud, and only one of them headed for the carrier. America's three-point-defense guns tracked the AS-6 and destroyed it a thousand feet from the ship. The other two missiles both found the cruiser Wainwright and exploded her four miles from Independence.

MANAMA, Bahrain - The U.S. Navy today destroyed two offshore Iranian oil platforms, sank a defending Iranian patrol boat and bombed two Iranian frigates. Iran attacked oil facilities off Sharjah and fired on at least two U.S. vessels.
The U.S. attack on the Persian Gulf oil platforms came in retaliation for a mine explosion that tore a hole in a U.S. frigate last week, injuring 10 crewmen.
"We aim to deter further Iranian aggression - not provoke it," President Reagan said. "They must know that we will protect our ships, and if they threaten us, they'll pay a price."
Official estimates of the toll from today's fighting changed through the day, but Reagan stated without elaboration that at least five Iranian vessels of various sizes - but no U.S. ones - had been damaged.
"Following the destruction of the two Iranian military platforms, whose personnel had evacuated after our warning, several Iran naval vessels and small boats attempted to engage our ships and aircraft," Reagan said.
"Three Iranian naval vessels and at least two small boats were sunk or very severely damaged," he added.
Also today, Iran said the United States had entered the Iran-Iraq war, charging U.S. helicopters supported an Iraqi land offensive in the Faw Peninsula. The Pentagon dismissed the charge, saying no U.S. military forces have been involved with Iraqi units.
The White House said three U.S. warships ships blasted each Iranian platform. No U.S. casualties were reported in the attacks, and the Iranians fled prior to the shelling, the White House said.
Iran said a number of oil workers aboard the two platforms were killed or injured. It gave no details.
Defense Secretary Frank C. Carlucci said a U.S. helicopter also was fired upon during the raid but was not hit.
One U.S. warship fired missiles at two approaching Iranian jet fighters, but the fighters reversed course; it was unclear whether they were hit, Carlucci said.
He said an Iranian patrol boat fired on the U.S. cruiser Wainwright, which took part in the attack on one of the platforms. The Wainwright was not hit.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - The missile cruiser USS Princeton, badly damaged by a mine in the northern Persian Gulf, has been pulled out of action and sent to a gulf port for assessment, U.S. military officials said today.
Discussing the mine blasts that damaged the U.S. warships, he said what was apparently an unusually sophisticated mine damaged the rudder and rudder shaft of the billion-dollar Princeton. The blast injured three crewmen and lifted the vessel party out of the water.
The USS Tripoli, meanwhile, remained on duty after patching a 16-by-20-foot hole in its hull blown by a cruder mine 2 1/2 hours earlier and 10 miles away.
Neal said no minesweepers had cleared the area where the explosions occurred because it was believed to have been relatively free of mines. He said the allies would "continue an aggressive countermine campaign."
The two explosions appeared to jeopardize any plans for an amphibious landing by the Marine task force positioned off the Kuwait coast - at least in the area where the ships were operating.
The Tripoli, an 18,000-ton helicopter assault carrier, is serving as flagship for a newly mounted mine-clearing operation in the area. The 2-year-old Princeton had been on anti-aircraft surveillance duty.
There were varying reports on the extent of damage to the 570-foot Princeton.
Military officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was one report that the hull was damaged in the middle, with cracks in the superstructure above the main deck.
They did not say to which gulf port the Princeton had headed for repairs.
A dozen mine sweepers from the U.S., Saudi and European navies are at work to clear out the thousands of mines the Iraqis are believed to have sown in coastal waters to deter any landing by the 15,000 Marines stationed aboard about 30 ships in the gulf.
The Marines are prepared to strike at Kuwaiti beaches by helicopter and assault boat as part of the anticipated ground offensive.
U.S. officials, however, were worried by the explosions, especially because the Princeton appeared to have been damaged by a so-called "influence mine" - a device the Iraqis were known to possess but had never before used.

The governor of Texas sends for rodeo star Roy Rogers after learning of how Roy and his pal, Frog Millhouse, apprehended bank robber Duke Wilson and his gang. A wave of sabotage has been spreading through the Southwest, and the governor asks Roy to act as an undercover operative and find the culprits, who have been targeting factories supplying materials for the war effort. The governor's last agent, who was murdered, left a clue that he was "following Mary," and so Roy strikes out with Frog to look for Mary. Their travels lead them to the Merry Makers Carnival and Tent Show, which is owned by Dave Mason and features Maurice, who has a mind-reading act. Unknown to the governor, his assistant, William Kraly, is the leader of the sabotage ring, and it is he who orders Maurice and the reluctant Mason to carry out the bombings and arsons. Upon hearing Mason's pretty stepdaughter Judy comment on the unlucky incidents that seem to follow them, Roy decides to infiltrate the show and arranges to be hired as a singer. Kraly has already alerted Maurice and Mason that Roy is the governor's new operative, however, and they have hired him only to keep an eye on him. Kraly's method of operation is to send an agent to Maurice's show to pose as an audience member, and, while pretending to ask an innocent question, alert Maurice to his identity with a code word, followed by coded instructions. Roy uncovers this method, although he is still unaware of Kraly's complicity, and follows Maurice, Mason and their men as they go to blow up an important warehouse. They capture Roy, however, and after tying him up, leave him to be killed in the explosion. Roy escapes just before the dynamite goes off, and with Frog's help, learns that the ringleader will be going to the town of Freeman to pick up an important message. When Roy alerts the governor, Kraly finds out and sends his men to drive the governor's car off the road as he travels to Freeman. Meanwhile, Maurice catches Roy stealing his code book and is about to shoot him in cold blood when Mason stops him. Mason threatens to expose the operation but is shot by Maurice, who frames Roy for the murder.

Norway suspect modeled his writings after Unabomber manifesto

Anders Behring Breivik, the chief suspect in Friday's twin terrorist attacks in Norway, copied passages from infamous American Unabomber Theodore Kaczynski's manifesto and used them in his own writings, according to a Norwegian website that publishes political commentary, analysis and essays.
Hans Rustad, editor of the website Document.no, writes that Breivik's 1,500-page political manifesto, titled "A European Declaration of Independence" and posted on the website (link in Norwegian) along with other writings by Breivik, copied some of Kaczynski's document almost verbatim.
The website editor noted that the alleged gunman replicated passages 6 through 23 of the Unabomber's manifesto, but made some slight changes.
For example, Breivik replaced the word "leftist" with "cultural Marxist;" while "leftism" was replaced with "Multiculturalism" and "cultural Communism," according to Rustad.
Kaczynski, a mathematician who lived in the American wilderness, conducted an almost-20-year mail-bombing spree, in which three people were killed and almost two dozen injured.
As reported by The Times, the titles of sections of Breivik's online manifesto, the authorship of which could not be verified, include, "What your government, the academia and the media are hiding from you," "Documenting EU's deliberate strategy to Islamize Europe" and "How the feminists' 'War Against the Boys' paved the way for Islam."
Breivik calls for a "conservative revolution" and "preemptive declaration of war," including "armed resistance against the cultural Marxists/multiculturalist regimes of Western Europe."
In an article on Document.no, Rustad wrote that Breivik had been "an active" commentator on the website since fall 2009, with more sporadic posts in 2010.
Rustad surmised that Breivik wanted the document to become "an organ of a cultural conservative revival."
"He saw great potential," in it," Rustad wrote. "He was both excited about much of the material and analysis, and that he thought there was a big market out there for it."
Rustad said in his article that Breivik gave the impression of being a person with important contacts. But when the website tried to check him out, they found that he was rather lightweight — a small outfit with few references, Rustad said.
The editor said that the only contact Document.no had with Breivik was an email the suspected gunman sent on Oct. 28, 2009, in which he suggested ways to increase the website's traffic. But "it didn't lead to anything," Rustad wrote.

The American mission commander was annoyed. The Russian fighters were not cooperating. They hadn't come out even when the Intruders had popped up - he'd had more fighters waiting low for that eventuality. But the Soviet radars were down. He gave the next order. Three squadrons of F/A-18 Hornets streaked in low from the north.
The Russian air-defense commander ordered his radars back on, saw that no more missiles were in the air, and soon picked up the low-flying Hornets. The MiG commander saw the American attack aircraft next, and with them, his chance. The MiG-29 was a virtual twin to the new American aircraft.
The Hornets sought out the Russian SAM launchers and began to launch their guided weapons at them. Missiles crisscrossed the sky. Two Hornets fell to missiles, two more to guns, as the American fighter-bombers scoured the ground with bombs and gunfire. Then the MiGs arrived.
The American pilots were warned, but were too close to their bombing targets to react at once. Once free of their heavy ordnance, they were fighters again, and climbed into the sky - they feared MiGs more than missiles. The resulting air battle was a masterpiece of confusion. The two aircraft would have been hard to distinguish sitting side by side on the ground. At six hundred knots, in the middle of battle, the task was almost impossible, and the Americans, with their greater numbers, had to hold fire until they were sure of their targets. The Russians knew what they were attacking, but they too shrank from shooting with abandon at a target that looked too much like a comrade's aircraft. The results was a swarming mix of fighters closing to a range too short for missiles, as pilots sought positive target identification, an anachronistic gun duel punctuated by surface-to-air missiles from the two surviving Russian launchers. Controllers on the American aircraft and Russian ground station never had a chance to direct matters. It was entirely in the hands of the pilots.

Young people describe being methodically stalked by a gunman as they hid inside bathrooms, scrambled through woods or dove into the frigid lake. Police face questions about the time they took to respond.

The gunman had already spared him once. It wasn't going to happen again.
Minutes before, Adrian Pracon had been trying to swim to safety when he saw the killer point his weapon at him. "Please, no, please!" Pracon screamed. No bullet came.
Now, sprawled face down on a half-submerged rock, trying to play dead, the 21-year-old sensed the shooter standing almost directly above him, so close that he could feel the heat of the weapon.
As the gunman fired at other youths lying on the island's shore, Pracon kept still, even when a bullet hit his shoulder. That apparently convinced the attacker that Pracon was dead and to move on.
"It was as though he had done this kind of thing before, as if going around and shooting people was totally normal," Pracon told Norway's Aftenposten newspaper. "He said, 'You're all going to die.' "
In harrowing accounts such as Pracon's, the pieces of the blood-soaked drama Friday on Utoya Island began coming together as police pressed on with their investigation of the deadliest day on Norwegian soil since World War II, and found themselves on the defensive over how long it took to stop the carnage.
Authorities said Saturday that the death toll from twin attacks had reached 92, with 85 of the victims — mostly young people — killed in the rampage targeting a youth camp of the ruling Labor Party on Utoya. At least seven people died in a massive bomb blast that occurred shortly before in the center of Oslo. Four people are still missing.
Police said the suspected gunman, Anders Behring Breivik, described as a Christian fundamentalist with extreme right-wing views, put up no resistance when officers arrived on Utoya to apprehend him. He has admitted firing on hundreds of people gathered on the island outside Oslo for a summer retreat, police said.
It was a methodical massacre that went on, incredibly, for at least 60 minutes. Terrified youths were hunted down as they hid inside bathrooms, scrambled through bushes on the heavily wooded island and dived into the icy water to try to escape.
With a sniper's calm, the gunman picked them off on land and in the water, using a handgun and an automatic weapon.
Even more frightening, he was dressed in a police uniform, which made some desperate survivors uncertain whether help or more hell had come when the real officers showed up.
"Who could we trust?" a survivor named Khamshajiny Gunaratnam wrote on her blog.
Breivik is also suspected of setting off the car bomb in Oslo. An agricultural cooperative reported Saturday that Breivik, 32, had ordered 6 metric tons of artificial fertilizer to be delivered in early May to his farmhouse in Asta, a sparsely populated community about 2 1/2 hours north of Oslo.
Because he owned a farm, the purchase seemed legitimate, though large, authorities said. But such fertilizer can also be used to make explosives, as was the case in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, carried out by antigovernment Army veteran Timothy McVeigh.
About 4 to 5 metric tons of fertilizer was found at Breivik's farmhouse, Oslo Deputy Police Chief Sveinung Sponheim said. Investigators are trying to determine whether other bombs might be planted elsewhere.
Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said government workers were among the dead. The remains of some victims are still to be recovered from the heavily damaged buildings in downtown Oslo, police said.
Although the huge explosion appeared aimed at killing on a large scale, it also served as a diversion from — and a set-up for — the real slaughter to come on Utoya, less than an hour away from downtown Oslo.
Simen Mortensen, a volunteer for the summer camp, was stationed on the mainland side of the ferry service to Utoya. He told the Verdens Gang newspaper that a man wearing a police uniform and a bulletproof vest pulled up in a silver vehicle. The man was armed with a pistol and an automatic weapon with a telescopic lens.
"He gets out of the car and shows identification. Says he's been sent to check on security, that this is routine, in connection with the terrorist attack," Mortensen said. "Everything looks fine, and a boat is called to ferry him over to Utoya.
"After a few minutes, we hear shooting."
Once on the island, the tall, blond man apparently beckoned unsuspecting campers over to him, telling them he wanted to talk about the explosion in Oslo.
News of the blast had already reached Utoya; the retreat's leaders had called an informational meeting about it, so that attendees could call their families to make sure they were all right, Gunaratnam wrote in her blog.
Then the man drew his weapons and opened fire. Campers screamed and scattered.
"The first thing the crazy man did was shoot the first nice-looking girl he saw," Marius Helander Roset told VG Nett, the online news site of Verdens Gang. Roset fled into the woods and hid behind a rock.

Witnesses say the gunman enters a village of tents, the residential heart of the weeklong retreat, and spots desperate individuals hoping he'll spare them if they run back inside their homes. But the killer is seen working his way tent by tent, shooting many point-blank, one by one.
5:20 p.m.:
Kaur joins a group of panicked, confused campers. They are running from the approaching gunman, his "POLICE" moniker crystal-clear to see from even middle distance.
"My first thought was: Why are the police shooting at us? What the hell?" she writes.
More than a dozen crowd into a dark corner of a camp building, and all lie down on the floor. She cries quietly — then sees her best friend from camp, a boy, through a window.
"I wondered if I should go out and bring him to me. I did not. I saw fear in his eyes," she writes.
5:25 p.m.:
Kaur says a burst of gunfire extremely close to the building triggers panic and the entire group leaps out of a far window. Several suffer injuries, including a girl with a broken ankle, but the shooter doesn't immediately pursue them. She takes new cover behind a low brick wall, telephones her mother on her cell phone, and sends a text to her father.
"Many were there," she writes. "I prayed, prayed, prayed. I hope that God saw me."
5:30 p.m.:
As the gunman picks off lone campers who run from their hiding spots as he draws near, many find themselves at the shoreline with only one apparent escape route — the water.
Kaur says the gunman tries to draw out the hiders near the brick wall, shouting, "I'm from the police!" Campers shout back, "Prove it!" He shoots at those who move. She lies still, on top of the legs of a teenage girl covered in blood.

The Communications Decency Act of 1996 (CDA) was the first notable attempt by the United States Congress to regulate pornographic material on the Internet. In 1997, in the landmark cyberlaw case of Reno v. ACLU, the United States Supreme Court struck the anti-indecency provisions of the Act.
The Act was Title V of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. It was introduced to the Senate Committee of Commerce, Science, and Transportation by Senators James Exon (D-NE) and Slade Gorton (R-WA) in 1995. The amendment that became the CDA was added to the Telecommunications Act in the Senate by an 84–16 vote on June 14, 1995.

Judges Block Law Censoring Internet -- Decency Act Fails First Amendment Test On Free Speech

PHILADELPHIA - Congress' attempt to censor the Internet was sternly rebuked today by a panel of federal judges, who argued that the Net deserves at least the same protections as the print medium.
The three-judge panel issued a preliminary injunction against the Communications Decency Act, an anti-pornography provision of sweeping telecommunications legislation passed last fall.
The unanimous decision, the first key judicial ruling on the Internet, had been awaited by the government and 57 groups challenging the act.
The act, enacted Feb. 8 as part of a behemoth overhaul of telecommunications legislation, makes displaying "indecent" or "patently offensive" words or images on the Internet punishable by $250,000 fines and a two-year prison sentence if they are accessible to minors.
"As the most participatory form of mass speech yet developed, the Internet deserves the highest protection from governmental intrusion," the judges wrote.
"The Internet is a far more speech-enhancing medium than print," the judges said. "Because it would necessarily affect the Internet itself, the CDA would necessarily reduce the speech available for adults on the medium. This is a constitutionally intolerable result."
The major online services, all plaintiffs in the lawsuits, argued the law was so vague that they were unsure whether it covered materials that have serious literary, artistic or intellectual value.
They said it could stifle discussion of medical information, literature, works of art and popular culture, and could even affect news reports carried on the Internet.

See how kind we are to the families of those we have murdered! He had seen many lies in his thirty-five years in the Party. He had told enough of them himself - but never anything that came close to this. Just as well, he thought, that I've had nothing to eat today.
His eyes came back reluctantly to the waxen face of a child. He remembered the sleeping faces of his own children, now grown. So often after arriving home late from Party work, he had stolen a look into their bedroom at night to see their peaceful faces, always lingering to be sure that they were breathing normally, listening for the sniffles of a cold or the murmurs of a dream. How often had he told himself that he and the Party worked for their future? No more colds, little one, he said with his eyes to the nearest child. No more dreams. See what the Party has done for your future. His own eyes filled with tears - and he hated himself for it. His Comrades would think it part of the performance. He wanted to look around, to see what his Comrades of the Politburo thought of their handiwork. He wondered what the KGB team that had done the deed thought of their mission now. If they were still alive, he reflected. So easy to put them on an airplane and crash it into the ground so that not even executioners would know of them. All records of the bomb plot were already destroyed, he was sure, and of the thirty men who knew of it, more than half were right here, standing in line with him. Sergetov almost wished he had entered that building five minutes sooner. Better to be dead than to be a beneficiary of such infamy - but he knew better. In that case he would have played an even larger role in this brutal farce.

Alekseyev eyed his commander closely. The General had almost choked on those words: he was already practicing how to use them on the crucial few who would know of this outrage, yet had to perform their duties as though it never existed. There will come a day of reckoning, Pasha told himself, a day of reckoning for all the crimes committed in the name of Socialist Progress.
