Toland had been a busy fellow for the past twelve hours. The data on Iceland came in slowly, one confusing piece at a time, and even now he didn't have enough to call a clear picture. The group's orders had been changed, though only after too many hours of indecision. The mission to reinforce Iceland was a washout. For the past ten hours the battle group had been heading due east toward friendly air cover from England and France. Someone had decided that if the Marines could not go to Iceland, then they might find useful employment in Germany. Bob had expected them to be diverted to Norway, where a Marine Amphibious Brigade was already in place, but getting them there could prove difficult. A furious air battle had been raging over northern Norway for almost twenty hours, with losses heavy on both sides. The Norwegians had started the war with scarcely a hundred modern fighters. They were screaming for help, but there was no help for anyone as yet.
"They're not just chewing the Norwegians up," Toland observed. "They're driving them south. Most of the attacks are on the northern bases, and they're not giving them any breather at all."
Chip nodded. "That figures. Gives their Backfires a straighter shot at us. Briefing time."

It was just after midnight when the truck drove north across the Kemenny Bridge to Borovitskaya Square and turned right, toward the Kremlin. The driver stopped for the first group of Kremlin Guards. Their papers were fully in order, of course, and they were waved through. The truck pulled up to the second checkpoint by the Kremlin Palace, where their papers were also in order. From there it was five hundred meters to the service entrance of the Council of Ministers Building.
"What are you delivering this time of day, Comrades?" the Red Army captain asked.
"Cleaning supplies. Come, I will show you." The driver got out and walked slowly around the back of the truck. "Must be nice, working here at night when things are so peaceful."
"True enough," the captain agreed. He'd go off duty in another ninety minutes.
"Here." The driver pulled back the canvas cover. There were twelve cans of industrial-strength solvent and a crate of hardware parts.
"German supplies?" The captain was surprised. He'd been on Kremlin duty for only two weeks.
"Da. The Krauts make very efficient cleaning machinery, and the vlasti make use of it. This is carpet-cleaning fluid. This is for lavatory walls. This one here is for windows. The crate - ah, I will open it." The lid came off easily since the nails had already been loosened. "As you can see, Comrade Captain, parts for some of the machines." He smirked. "Even German machines break."
"Open one of the cans," the captain ordered.
"Sure, but you won't like the smell. Which one do you want opened?" The driver picked up a small prybar.
"That one." The captain pointed to a can of bathroom cleaner.
The driver laughed. "The worst-smelling of all. Stand back, Comrade, we don't want to splash this slop on your clean uniform."
The captain was new enough on the job that he scrupulously did not step back. Good, the driver thought. He worked the prybar under the can's lid, twisted, and popped his free hand down on the end. The lid flew off, and the captain was splashed by some flying solvent.
"Shit!" It did smell bad.
"I warned you, Comrade Captain."
"What is this garbage?"
"It's used to clean mildew off bathroom tiles. It will come right out of the uniform, Comrade Captain. But be sure you have it dry-cleaned soon. An acid solution, you see, it could damage the wool."
The captain wanted to be mad, but the man had warned him, hadn't he? Next time I'll know better, he thought. "Very well, take it in."
"Thank you. I am sorry about the uniform. Don't forget to have it cleaned."
The captain waved to a private and walked off. The soldier unlocked the door. The driver and his assistant went inside to get a two-wheeled handtruck.
"I warned him," the driver said to the private.
"You certainly did, Comrade." The soldier was amused. He, too, was looking forward to going off duty, and it wasn't often that you saw an officer get caught.
The driver watched his assistant load the cans onto the handtruck, and followed him as he wheeled it into the building to the service elevator. Then both returned for the second load.
They took the elevator to the third floor, shut the power off, and moved their loads to a storage room directly below the large fourth-floor conference room.
"That was good with the captain," the assistant said. "Now let's get to work."
"Yes, Comrade Colonel." the driver answered at once. The four cans of carpet-cleaning fluid had false tops which the lieutenant removed and set aside. Next he took out the satchel charges. The colonel had memorized the blueprints of the building. The wall pillars were in the outside corners of the room. One charge went to each, fixed to the inboard side. The empty cans were placed next to the charges, hiding them. Next the lieutenant removed two of the false-ceiling panels, exposing the steel beams supporting the fourth floor slab. The remaining charges were attached there, and the ceiling panels replaced. The charges already had their detonators attached. The colonel took the electronic triggering device out of his pocket, he checked his watch, and waited for three minutes before pressing the button to activate the timers. The bombs would explode in exactly eight hours.
The colonel watched the lieutenant tidy up, then wheeled the handtruck back to the elevator. Two minutes later, they left the building. The captain was back.
"Comrade," he said to the driver. "You shouldn't let this old one do all the heavy work. Show some respect."
"You are kind, Comrade Captain." The colonel smiled crookedly and pulled a half-liter bottle of Vodka from his pocket. "Drink?"
The captain's solicitous attitude ended abruptly. A worker drinking on duty - in the Kremlin! "Move along!"
"Good day, Comrade." The driver got into the truck and drove off. They had to pass through the same security checkpoints, but their papers were still in order.
After leaving the Kremlin, the truck turned north on Marksa Prospekt and followed it all the way to the KGB headquarters building at 2 Dzerzhinskiy Square.

WASHINGTON — They had lived for more than a decade in U.S. cities and suburbs from Seattle to New York, where they seemed to be ordinary couples working ordinary jobs, chatting to neighbors about gardening and schools, apologizing for noisy teenagers.
On Monday, though, federal prosecutors accused 11 people of being part of a Russian espionage ring, living under false names and deep cover in a patient scheme to penetrate what one coded message called American "policymaking circles."
An FBI investigation that began at least seven years ago culminated with the arrest Sunday of 10 people in Yonkers, Boston and Northern Virginia. An 11th suspect is at large.
The defendants were charged with conspiracy, not to commit espionage but to launder money and to fail to register as agents of a foreign government, crimes carrying potential sentences of five to 20 years. They are not accused of obtaining classified materials.
The documents detailed what authorities called the "Illegals Program," an ambitious, long-term effort by the SVR, a successor to the Soviet KGB, to plant Russian spies in the United States to gather information and recruit more agents.
It was unclear what secrets the suspected spy ring — which included five couples — managed to collect or what prompted U.S. authorities to shut it down.
Criminal complaints filed in U.S. District Court read like an old-fashioned Cold War thriller: Spies swapping identical orange bags as they brushed past one another in a train-station stairwell; an identity borrowed from a dead Canadian; forged passports of several countries; letters sent by shortwave-burst transmission or in invisible ink; a money cache buried for years in a field in upstate New York.
But the network of so-called illegals — spies operating under false names outside the usual diplomatic cover — also used cyber-age technology, according to the charges. They embedded coded texts in ordinary-looking images posted on the Internet and communicated by having two agents with laptops containing special software pass casually as messages flashed between them.
Two of the defendants were identified as Michael Zottoli and his wife, Patricia Mills. They lived in Seattle until last year, when they moved to Arlington, Va., according to charging documents.
One Seattle apartment where the couple lived was the target of a judicially approved, clandestine search by the FBI on Feb. 17, 2006, the charging papers say. Agents reported finding a short-wave radio and notebooks filled with numbers, which they suspect might have been used to receive and decipher coded messages.
About four months after the search, according to the charging documents, the couple traveled to the vicinity of Wurtsboro, N.Y., where Zottoli dug up a package containing money buried by another of the defendants.
Two months after that, University of Washington records show, two students named Michael Zottoli and Patricia Mills graduated with bachelor degrees in business administration.
The couple may have lived in several apartments while in Seattle, records show. In about 2008, they lived in the Belmont Court Republican apartments on Capitol Hill.
John Evans, manager of the apartments, recalls a "very quiet, very private" couple with European accents. "I was sorry to see them go," he said. "I am shocked to hear they would be doing anything like that [spying]."
In Montclair, N.J., neighbors of a couple who called themselves Richard and Cynthia Murphy were flabbergasted when a team of FBI agents turned up Sunday night and led the couple away in handcuffs. One person who lives nearby called them "suburbia personified."
Others worried about the Murphys' elementary-age daughters, who were driven away by a family friend.
Authorities also tracked one set of agents based in Yonkers on trips to an unidentified South American country, where they were videotaped receiving bags of cash and passing messages written in invisible ink to Russian handlers in a public park, according to the charges.
The timing of the arrests was notable, given the emphasis President Obama and his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, have placed on "resetting" U.S.-Russia relations.
The two leaders met just last week at the White House after Medvedev visited high-tech firms in California's Silicon Valley, and both attended the G-8 and G-20 meetings in Canada last weekend.
Intelligence on Obama's foreign-policy positions, particularly as they relate to Russia, appears to have been one of the top priorities for the alleged spies, according to the filings.
In the spring of 2009, the documents say, the New Jersey conspirators, the Murphys, were asked by Russia for information related to Obama's trip to Russia scheduled for that summer.
They were asked to provide information about the U.S. negotiating position on the START arms-reduction treaty as well as Afghanistan and the U.S. approach in dealing with Iran's suspect nuclear program, the documents said.
Prosecutors said the "Illegals Program" extended to other countries. Using fraudulent documents, the charges said, the spies would "assume identities as citizens or legal residents of the countries to which they are deployed, including the United States."
Illegals sometimes pursue degrees at target-country universities, obtain employment and join relevant professional associations" to deepen their false identities.
One message from bosses in Moscow, in awkward English, gave the most revealing account of the agents' assignment: "You were sent to USA for long-term service trip. Your education, bank accounts, car, house etc. — all these serve one goal: fulfill your main mission, i.e. to search and develop ties in policymaking circles and send intels intelligence reports to Center."

NEW YORK — A shadowy money man for a Russian spy ring whose members were assigned a decade or more ago to infiltrate American society has been captured overseas, authorities said Tuesday. He was the last of 11 suspects named in a huge bust that threatens to tear recently mending relations between the U.S. and Russia.
The 11th suspect, using the name Christopher Metsos and purporting to be a Canadian citizen, was arrested at the Larnaca airport in Cyprus while trying to fly to Budapest, Hungary, police in the Mediterranean island nation said. He was later released on bail.
Metsos, 54, was among those named in complaints unsealed Monday in federal court in Manhattan. Authorities in Cyprus said he will remain there for one month until extradition proceedings begin.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Farbiarz on Monday called the allegations against the other 10 people living in the Northeast "the tip of the iceberg" of a conspiracy of Russia's intelligence service, the SVR, to collect inside U.S. information.
Each of the 10 was charged with conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government without notifying the U.S. attorney general, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison upon conviction. Two criminal complaints outlining the charges were filed in U.S. District Court in New York.
Most of the suspects were accused of using fake names and claims of U.S. citizenship while really being Russian. It was unclear how and where they were recruited, but court papers say the operation goes back as far as the 1990s.

LOSS OF THE USS Indianapolis
In the Headquarters of Commander Marianas on Guam and of the Commander Philippine Sea Frontier on Leyte, operations plotting boards were kept. On these boards was kept a graphic plot of the positions at sea of all vessels in which the headquarters concerned was interested. In the case of the Indianapolis, the departure of the vessel from Guam on July 28 was recorded on the plotting boards in each of these headquarters. Her estimated position was plotted on each board daily. On July 31, the date on which the vessel was scheduled to have arrived at Leyte, the Indianapolis was removed from the board in the headquarters of Commander Marianas and was recorded on the board at the headquarters of Commander Philippine Sea Frontier as having arrived at Leyte. This was the routine method of handling the plot of combatant vessels. Since, in accordance with orders standard throughout the Southwest Pacific Area, the Pacific Ocean Areas, and the Atlantic, the arrival of combatant vessels was not reported, vessels of this class were assumed to have arrived at their destinations on the date and at approximately the time scheduled in the absence of information to the contrary. However, since the Indianapolis did not arrive, the responsible officers at the office of the Port Director, Leyte, who knew of her non-arrival should have instituted action to determine the reason.
Within 16 hours of the actual sinking of the Indianapolis, there was in the Advance Headquarters of the Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet an indication (from a single enemy source) to the effect that the Japanese had sunk something (the nature of which was unknown) in a position which was approximately the predicted position of the Indianapolis at the time. Had this information been evaluated as authentic, it is possible that the survivors of the Indianapolis might have been located within 24 hours of the time of the sinking of the ship and many additional lives might have been saved.

USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was a Portland-class cruiser of the United States Navy. She holds a place in history due to the circumstances of her sinking, which led to the greatest single loss of life at sea in the history of the U.S. Navy. On 30 July 1945, shortly after delivering critical parts for the first atomic bomb to be used in combat to the United States air base at Tinian, the ship was torpedoed by the Imperial Japanese Navy submarine I-58, sinking in 12 minutes. Of 1,196 crewmen aboard, approximately 300 went down with the ship.
The remaining crew of 880 men faced exposure, dehydration and shark attacks as they waited for assistance while floating with few lifeboats and almost no food or water. The Navy learned of the sinking when survivors were spotted four days later by the crew of a PV-1 Ventura on routine patrol. Only 316 sailors survived. Indianapolis was the last major U.S. Navy ship sunk by enemy action in World War II.
Operations plotting boards were kept at the Headquarters of Commander Marianas on Guam and of the Commander Philippine Sea Frontier on Leyte. On these boards, the positions of all vessels of which the headquarters was concerned were plotted. However, for ships as large as the Indianapolis, it was assumed that they would reach their destinations on time, unless reported otherwise. Therefore, their positions were based on predictions, and not on reports. On 31 July, when she should have arrived at Leyte, Indianapolis was removed from the board in the headquarters of Commander Marianas. She was also recorded as having arrived at Leyte by the headquarters of Commander Philippine Sea Frontier. Lieutenant Stuart B. Gibson, the Operations Officer under the Port Director, Tacloban, was the officer responsible for tracking the movements of Indianapolis. The non-arrival of that vessel on schedule was known at once to Lieutenant Gibson who failed to investigate the matter and made no immediate report of the fact to his superiors.
The Indianapolis sent distress calls before sinking. Three stations received the signals; however, none acted upon the call. One commander was drunk, another had ordered his men not to disturb him and a third thought it was a Japanese prank. For a long time the Navy denied that a distress call had been sent. The receipt of the call came to light only after the release of declassified records.

On the morning of 18 February 1991, during Operation Desert Storm, Princeton was patrolling an operating area 28 nautical miles (52 km) off Failaka Island in the Persian Gulf, on the west side of the decoy U.S. Marine and naval invasion forces afloat. Two Italian-made MN103 Manta bottom-mounted influence mines detonated, one just under the port rudder and the other just forward of the starboard bow, most likely a sympathetic detonation caused by the first explosion. The blasts cracked the superstructure, buckled three lines in the hull, jammed the port rudder, flooded the #3 switchboard room through chilled water pipe cracks, and damaged the starboard propeller shaft.

At the height of the Cold war the US and the Soviet Union held more than 30,000 nuclear warheads each, but talks began in the 1960s between the two superpowers to find ways of slowing down the arms race and limiting the size of their arsenals.
Between 1969 and 1979 there were a series of negotiations between the two countries aimed not at reducing stockpiles but of limiting the growth of their arsenals.
The Strategic Arms Limitation Talks, or SALT negotiations, were delayed by the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, but began in 1969 between the US President Lyndon Johnson and the Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. Neither the SALT I accord, which was effective between 1972 and 1977, or the SALT II pact called for reductions in nuclear weaponry, merely a limit on their expansion. SALT II was mainly negotiated by President Ford before he left office in 1976, and signed by Mr Brezhnev and President Carter in Vienna in 1979. It was never fully ratified because of the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, although the terms of the accord were respected by both sides until Ronald Reagan exceeded its limitations during his second term.
The key breakthroughs in arms reductions came from negotiations between Mr Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Soviet leader. A series of meetings in August and September 1986 culminated in the Reykjavik Summit between Mr Reagan and Mr Gorbachev on October 11, 1986.

United Airlines Flight 232 was a scheduled flight from Stapleton International Airport in Denver, Colorado, to O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, with continuing service to Philadelphia International Airport. On July 19, 1989, the DC-10 (Registration N1819U) operating the route crash-landed in Sioux City, Iowa, after suffering catastrophic failure of its tail-mounted engine, which led to the loss of all flight controls. 111 people died in the accident
The crew guided the crippled jet to Sioux Gateway Airport and lined it up for landing on one of the runways. However, without flight controls, they were unable to slow down for landing, and were forced to attempt landing at much too high a speed and rate of descent. On touchdown, the aircraft broke apart, caught fire, and rolled over. The largest section came to rest in a cornfield next to the runway.
On final descent, the aircraft was going 240 knots and sinking at 1,850 feet per minute, while a safe landing would require 140 knots and 300 feet per minute. Fitch needed a seat for landing; Dvorak offered up his own, as it could be moved to a position behind the throttles. Dvorak sat in the cockpit's jumpseat for landing. Unfortunately, right before touchdown, the aircraft began a downward phugoid and veered right. The flight crew had no time to react. The tip of the right wing hit the runway first, spilling fuel, which ignited immediately. The tail section broke off from the force of the impact, and the rest of the aircraft bounced several times, shedding the landing gear and engine nacelles and breaking the fuselage into several main pieces. On the final impact the right wing was sheared off and the main part of the aircraft skidded sideways, rolled over on to its back, and slid to a stop upside-down in a corn field to the right of Runway 22. Witnesses reported that the aircraft cartwheeled, but the investigation did not confirm this. News reports that the aircraft cartwheeled were due to misinterpretation of the video of the crash that showed the flaming right wing tumbling end-over-end and the intact left wing, still attached to the fuselage, rolling up and over as the fuselage flipped over.
Of the 296 people on board, 111 died in the crash. Most were killed by injuries sustained in the multiple impacts, but 35 people in the middle fuselage section directly above the fuel tanks died from smoke inhalation in the post-crash fire. Of those, 24 had no traumatic blunt-force injuries. The majority of the 185 survivors were seated behind first class and ahead of the wings. Many passengers were able to walk out through the ruptures to the structure, and in many cases got lost in the high field of corn adjacent to the runway until rescue workers arrived on the scene and escorted them to safety.

WASHINGTON - The battleship Wisconsin will be recommissioned Saturday and sent back to sea extensively modernized, the Navy said Wednesday.
The battleship fought with Adm. William Halsey's Third Fleet in the Pacific in World War II and was recommissioned in the Korean War.
It had been out of service since 1958 but will be recommissioned at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss., the Navy said. It is the last of four World War II battleships being reactivated.
The Navy said the Wisconsin had been modernized to carry 32 Tomahawk cruise missiles, 16 Harpoon surface-to-surface missiles and four Phalanx defensive weapons systems.

The Revolution has come to this, he thought. Sergetov was staring into the rubble. The sun was still high, even this late in the afternoon. The firefighters and soldiers were almost finished sorting through the wreckage, heaving the loose pieces into trucks a few meters from where he stood. There was dust on his suit. I'll have to have it cleaned, he thought, watching the seventh small body being lifted with a gentleness all too late and obscenely out of place. One more child was still unaccounted for, and there was still some lingering hope. A uniformed Army medic stood nearby, unwrapped dressings in his quivering hands. To his left a major of infantry was weeping with rage. A man with a family, no doubt.
The television cameras were there, of course. A lesson learned from the American media, Sergetov thought, the crews poking their way into the action to record every horrible scene for the evening news. He was surprised to see an American crew with their Soviet counterparts. So, we have made mass murder an international spectator sport.
Sergetov was far too angry for visible emotion. That could have been me, he thought. I always show up early for the Thursday meetings. Everyone knows it. The guards, the clerical staff, and certainly my Comrades on the Politburo. So this is the penultimate segment of the maskirovka. To motivate, to lead our people, we must do this. Was there supposed to be a Politburo member in the rubble? he wondered. A junior member, of course.
Surely I am wrong, Sergetov told himself. One part of his mind examined the question with chilling objectivity while another considered his personal friendships with some of the senior Politburo members. He didn't know what to think. An odd position for a leader of the Party.
NORFOLK, VIRGINIA
"I am Gerhardt Falken," the man said. "I entered the Soviet Union six days ago through the port of Odessa. I have been for ten years an agent of the Bundesnachrichtendienst, the intelligence apparat of the government of West Germany. My assignment was to kill the Politburo at its Thursday-morning session by means of a bomb placed in a storage room directly beneath the fourth-floor conference room in which they meet." Lowe and Toland watched their televisions in total fascination. It was perfect. "Falken" spoke perfect Russian, with the precise syntax and diction that schoolteachers in the Soviet Union sought to achieve. His accent was that of Leningrad.
"I have run an import-export business in Bremen for many years, and I have specialized in trade with the Soviet Union. I have traveled into the Soviet Union many times, and on many of these occasions I have used my business identity to run agents whose mission was to weaken and spy upon the Soviet Party and military infrastructures."
The camera closed in. "Falken" was reading in a monotone from a script, his eyes seldom rising to the cameras. Behind the glasses on one side was a large bruise. His hands shook slightly when he changed pages of the script.
"Looks like they beat up on him some," Lowe observed.
"Interesting," Toland replied. "They're letting us know that they work people over."
Lowe snorted. "A guy who blows little kids up? You can burn the bastard at the stake, and who'll give a good Goddamn? Some serious thought went into this, my friend."

2011 Norway attacks
The 2011 Norway attacks were two sequential terrorist attacks against the civilian population, the government, and a political summer camp in Norway on 22 July 2011. The first was a car bomb explosion in Regjeringskvartalet, the executive government quarter of Oslo, at 15:25:19 (CEST), outside the office of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and other government buildings. The explosion killed eight people and wounded several others, with more than 10 people critically injured.
The second attack occurred less than two hours later at a youth camp organized by the youth organization (AUF) of the ruling Norwegian Labour Party (AP) on the island of Utøya in Tyrifjorden, Buskerud. A gunman disguised as a policeman opened fire at the participants, killing 69 attendees, including personal friends of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and the stepbrother of Norway's crown princess Mette-Marit. The Norwegian Police Service arrested Anders Behring Breivik, a 32-year-old Norwegian right-wing extremist, for the mass shootings in Utøya and subsequently charged him with both attacks. The European Union, NATO and several countries around the world expressed their support for Norway and condemned the attacks.
The attack on Utøya is the deadliest attack by a single gunman in recorded history.

IN THE space of 48 hours Anders Behring Breivik emerged from the obscurity of an Oslo suburb to become the worst mass killer in peacetime Europe.
Breivik was born on February 13, 1979 and grew up in western Oslo where, until recently, he lived with his mother in the wealthy suburb of Skoyen. Superficially, his upbringing appears to have been both middle-class and unremarkable. He attended the Handelsgym High School in Oslo and graduated with a masters degree from the Oslo School of Management.
In his late teens, he completed compulsory national service, where he received military training and learnt how to shoot.
