The horror story of the Axis submarine campaign off the Atlantic coast was still being told last week by pallid, bearded men who had come through the prolonged agonies of thirst and sickness in open boats. The progress of the fight against the subs was told in a summary that was not so impressive.
The Navy announced that 28 Axis subs had been sunk and that 21 of them had gone down in the Atlantic. Knocking out such a fleet and its highly trained crews was a good performance. Yet it was not enough.
U.S. and Allied ships were being sunk at a disastrous rate, probably equal to the rate at which new ones were being commissioned (but far short of the rate the U.S. should reach this summer). Submarines had to be sunk faster than Adolf Hitler could turn them out, complete with trained crews.
The subs prowled daringly. One crew, drifting in a lifeboat, told of being followed for five days by a submarine, which surfaced at night and set off rocket signals to other U-boats. The castaways knew why they were being followed: the sub wanted to nail the ship that rescued them. They made no signal for help until the submarine began to lag behind. Then they hailed a passing freighter, which picked them up and made a getaway.
The subs worked close to shore. Off the southeastern coast, a U-boat slipped in shore and sank two barges and a tug with gunfire. She stood so close by that the barge crews could hear the commands of the officers on her deck.
Another sinking proved to the Navy's satisfaction that fifth columnists ashore were keeping in touch with U-boat crews. After the sinking of their small merchant ship; two crew members were picked up by a submarine, later released. The sailors found that the sub's commander knew about their port of departure, cargo and destination.
The most notable individual submarine foe was tight-lipped Donald Francis Mason, 28-year-old Navy enlisted pilot, who two months ago sent the now-famed message: "Sighted sub, sank same" (TIME, Feb. 9).
Upped to chief petty officer and decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross, Donald Mason repeated the performance: a neat straddle on a surfaced sub that blew it to bits. Last week he got a Silver Star, equivalent of another D.F.C. He also made the biggest leap in a Navy man's career. He was commissioned an ensign, went out to prowl for more subs, more promotion.

1998: Clinton denies affair with intern
President Clinton has strongly denied allegations that he had an affair with a 24-year-old former White House aide.
He also rejected accusations that he asked her to lie about the relationship on oath.
Mr Clinton has come under intense media pressure as rumours circulate that he conducted an 18-month affair with Monica Lewinsky in 1995.

"These allegations are false and I need to get back to work for the American people."

2000: Suicide bombers attack USS Cole
At least six American sailors have been killed in what is thought to have been a suicide bomb attack on a US Navy destroyer in the Yemeni port of Aden.
Eleven others are missing and at least 36 wounded after a massive explosion left the USS Cole badly gashed along one side.
Buildings shook
Witnesses to the explosion described it as being so powerful that buildings near the port shook.
It is thought an inflatable raft, packed with high explosives, rammed the USS Cole as it was apparently helping to moor the warship to a buoy.
The explosion left a gash up to 40 feet (12 metres) long in the left side of the destroyer, which is now listing badly.

Space Shuttle Columbia disaster
The Space Shuttle Columbia disaster occurred on February 1, 2003, when shortly before it was scheduled to conclude its 28th mission, STS-107, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated over Texas during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere, resulting in the death of all seven crew members. Debris from Columbia fell to Earth in Texas along a path stretching from Trophy Club to Tyler, as well as into parts of Louisiana.
At about this time, the Orbiter shed a Thermal Protection System tile, the most westerly piece of debris that has been recovered. Searchers found the tile in a field in Littlefield, Texas, just northwest of Lubbock.
8:59:15 (EI+906) – MMACS informed the Flight Director that pressure readings had been lost on both left main landing-gear tires. The Flight Director then told the Capsule Communicator (CAPCOM) to let the crew know that Mission Control saw the messages and was evaluating the indications, and added that the Flight Control Team did not understand the crew's last transmission.
8:59:32 (EI+923) – A broken response from the mission commander was recorded: "Roger, uh, bu – [cut off in mid-word] ..." It was the last communication from the crew and the last telemetry signal received in Mission Control.
8:59:37 (EI+928) – Hydraulic pressure, which is required to move the flight control surfaces, was lost at approximately GMT 13:59:37. At that time, the Master Alarm would have sounded for the loss of hydraulics and the crew would have become aware of a serious problem.
