Another DVD I have watched for the first time that I again hoped I would get through in its entirety without having to stop to make an official statement. Those hopes were dashed about six minutes into the first DVD for the 2008 television miniseries "The Andromeda Strain" and I now have to pause the DVD for a while and make this initial report and official statement about that racketeering production.

I caught a glimpse of a video playing on a screen around the time of the reporter making a news video on the National Guard and it looked as though it was an F-14 Tomcat, judging by the width of the wings and something else about the nature of the wings, that was being catapulted from an aircraft carrier, probably U.S. Navy.

Nah, that was a single-rudder tail configuration that was being launched from the catapult. I was thinking today that the A-6 Intruder and the F-14 Tomcat could have a similar appearance in that setting but I don't know. When I saw it yesterday, it was only the wings I noted and I could not remember if I had noted that tail configuration. The engine exhausts were similar to an A-6 Intruder.

Damn. Section 7-A of Arlington National Cemetery. I started looking at it after I was looking at USS Shoup, thinking its hull number 86 has something relevant to me and the year 1986. That is where the namesake of the Shoup is buried. It is where Micheal Smith, the Challenger pilot is buried. It is also where Doolittle is buried. Doolittle’s raid on Japan was on an April 18th. I think Doolittle is relevant to me because of Osirak and also because of something I did on April 18, 1988, although I am not sure what it was.

I have been wondering about the 6/22/2002 commissioning date of the USS Shoup DDG-86. I wrote earlier about how the namesake had one of his legs wounded in a battle and I wondered if that is somehow relevant to the scar I have on my hip, which I have started to think was caused by a meat cleaver.

I find myself thinking of some "memories" of when I was assigned to the USS Wainwright. The ship had left port for a short regional deployment and I stayed back because I had a medical appointment on base. Or something like that. Not really sure why I didn't leave with the ship but it was because of some appointment on base. After that appointment, there was a period before the ship was due back when I was assigned to work in an office there on base. I liked the assignment because I had to wear my dress uniform and I liked that because I got to wear all my ribbons. I didn't have any ribbons until we were in the Persian Gulf and so most of my ribbons were from that Operation Praying Mantis combat engagement. There were two other petty officers in the office; they might have been CPO's, but maybe Petty Officer First Class's. They didn't really have any work for me to do in there so they had me crumpling up pages of documents that were going into a burn bag because they were classified. They told me to take my time and pace myself because they didn't have any other work for me but I "remember" that I went through all the documents too soon and then didn't have anything to do. But then I was watching one of them typing up some regular report on a computer and he didn't know how to touch type so I volunteered to type it for him. I think the word processor was Gemstar. He told me I had saved him a lot of time. I had to leave and report back to the Wainwright the next day I think.

The Andromeda Strain is a 2008 science fiction miniseries, based on the novel published in 1969 by Michael Crichton about a team of scientists who investigate a deadly disease of extraterrestrial origin. The miniseries is more of a "reimagining" of the original Michael Crichton novel than an adaptation. In addition to updating the details to an early 21st Century milieu, the miniseries makes a great many plot and character changes from its source.
The mini-series has two episodes for a total of 180 minutes (originally aired the 26th and 27th of May 2008).
In an attempt to neutralize the problem, the President of the United States authorizes a small tactical nuclear strike on the quarantine area in hopes of completely irradiating and destroying Andromeda. When the Wildfire team is informed, they realize that they have not reviewed the test results for irradiating Andromeda. They find that the microorganism grows at an exponential rate when irradiated. The Wildfire team alerts the President, and the air-strike is called off before the pilot launches the nuclear missile. However, as the jet continues to fly over the quarantine area, the pilot reports a malfunction of the aircraft's controls. Through video feed, the Wildfire team and President watch in shock and horror as all plastic components of the aircraft, including the pilot's visor, disintegrate. The nuclear missile is re-armed, the jet and missile crash into the ground, and the missile detonates, irradiating the quarantine area. The team examine the footage of the crash, and realize that Andromeda did not attack the pilot until after the missile launch sequence was halted, leading the team to believe that Andromeda has the ability to think.

Mancheck reveals "Project Scoop," a confidential mission to examine a wormhole that had appeared near Earth. It consisted of a satellite sent to collect organic samples, but it malfunctioned during the mission and crashed. With this information, the Wildfire team infer that Andromeda could have been sent from Earth's future, possibly because society in the future could not destroy the contagion due to a lack of a natural resource - Bacillus infernus.
