Zone of High Pressure Blamed for West Coast Drought

January 15, 2014 1:39PM

Meteorologists say a vast zone of high pressure in the atmosphere off the West Coast, nearly four miles high and 2,000 miles long, is to blame for the emerging drought. The mass of high air pressure has been blocking Pacific winter storms from coming ashore, deflecting them into Alaska and British Columbia, even delivering rain to the East Coast.

As California struggles through a run of historically dry weather, most residents are looking at falling reservoir levels, dusty air and thirsty lawns.

But meteorologists have fixed their attention on the scientific phenomenon they say is to blame for the emerging drought: a vast zone of high pressure in the atmosphere off the West Coast, nearly four miles high and 2,000 miles long, so stubborn that one researcher has named it the "Ridiculously Resilient Ridge."

The mass of high air pressure has been blocking Pacific winter storms from coming ashore in California, deflecting them into Alaska and British Columbia, even delivering rain and cold weather to the East Coast. Similar high-pressure zones pop up all the time during most winters, but they usually break down, allowing rain to get through to California. This one has anchored itself for 13 months, since December 2012, making it unprecedented in modern weather records and puzzling researchers.

"It's like the Sierra -- a mountain range just sitting off the West Coast -- only bigger," said Bob Benjamin, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Monterey, Calif. "This ridge is sort of a mountain in the atmosphere. In most years, it comes and goes. This year it came and didn't go."

The current high-pressure ridge is even stronger and more persistent than a similar ridge that parked over the Pacific Ocean during the 1976-77 drought, one of the worst in the 20th century.

Scientists know that changes in temperature cause high- and low-pressure zones around the world. In many ways, air works like water. The deeper you swim in the ocean, the stronger the water pressure, because the weight of the water above is pressing down on the water below. Air in the atmosphere also has weight, and as temperatures of the ocean and land fluctuate, the atmospheric pressure also changes, helping drive much of our weather.

What researchers don't know is why the current high-pressure ridge is so persistent, or when it is going away, allowing California to enjoy some much-needed rain. A few scientists say that it may be related to climate change, but nobody knows for sure.

"I wish I had a really good answer for this," said Daniel Cayan, an oceanographer and atmospheric scientist with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. "It's unusual for the pattern to have not broken down to allow some relatively active, vigorous winter storm systems to track across California."

With each passing week, California's lack of rainfall becomes more serious. (continued...)

Zone of High Pressure Blamed for West Coast Drought

Last year was the driest calendar year in recorded history in California in most cities, with records going back 160 years. The first snowpack reading in the Sierra Nevada this month found a snowpack of just 20 percent of normal.

Meanwhile, major California reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville are each 36 percent full, about half of normal for this time of year. San Luis Reservoir near Los Banos is 30 percent full, 42 percent of normal. Major Bay Area water agencies haven't yet called for mandatory summer water restrictions but are expected to make the decision in the next month or two, depending largely on whether the high-pressure ridge breaks down and rain falls.

State Department of Water Resources Director Mark Cowin told members of the California State Board of Food and Agriculture in Sacramento a week ago that his agency is likely to recommend that Gov. Jerry Brown declare a drought declaration by Feb. 1, which would make it easier for water transfers between agencies and for emergency loans and other assistance.

On Monday at a news conference in Fresno, Brown told reporters "it's coming. Just be patient."

Still, he said last week: "Governors can't make it rain."

'Radioactive' Pacific Winter Storms

Shredded By High Pressure - Pics

Jeff Rense

12-24-13

'This WAS a normal, large Northern Pacific storm system for December. Note how it stretches from Alaska to down past Hawaii.

The first satellite photo below was taken on Dec 19. The day before, December 18, the storm was about TWICE as big. I did not catch that photo.

There is a giant high pressure blocking system off the Pacific Coast and you can see this very large storm, moving left to right in the following photos, has run smack into it. The near vertical part of the system shows how it has been stopped cold.

There have been very, very few storms that have made it to west coast since October.

This storm formed up off the Kamchatka Peninsula, Korea...and northern Japan. It swirled, counter-clockwise right over Fukushima prefecture in its early formation cycle.

We are fortunate few storms have made landfall this fall and winter as it is very likely they have all been carrying varying amounts of radiation. This blocking high pressure is about to shred this particular big storm as you will see in the photos below...

I am almost wondering if 'they' are blocking all the storms in order to prevent mass dumping of radiation all up and down the West Coast and into the Sierras and Cascade snowpack.

In our final photo, storm number one is just an echo of its once mighty self. Storm number 2 has been broken into two pieces and has about a zero chance of making it to California, Oregon and Washington. It would be nice to think that 'someone' has been creating that high pressure to keep us from being hit by radioactive rain and snow, no matter how concentrated it might be.

We already have an entire ocean-full of radioactive nuclides to deal with. Just ask the whales, dolphins, seals, orcas and countless fish trying to swim away from the approaching massive Fukushima plume of death which is formally due to hit the West Coast in 3-5 months.

Pagers Beepless Across Nation -- Satellite Loses The Earth

By Matthew Fordahl

AP

Millions of pagers that keep doctors and loved ones in touch sat silent today, and some radio and TV programs were interrupted, because a $250 million communications satellite lost track of Earth. Some public radio stations went off the air for lack of programming.

The owner of the satellite started transferring services to other satellites today and decided to move another satellite into position in orbit.

The Galaxy IV satellite stopped relaying pager messages and media feeds at about 3 p.m. PDT yesterday when its onboard control system and a backup switch failed and the satellite rotated out of position.

As of midday today, technicians had been unable to restore Galaxy IV's attitude-control systems and restore its orientation toward Earth, said Robert Bednarek, senior vice president and chief technology officer for Greenwich, Conn.-based PanAmSat, which owns the satellite.

He said the orbit of another satellite, Galaxy VI, will be changed over the next six days so it can take over operations of the crippled Galaxy IV.

The company has 17 satellites in orbit, spokesman Dan Marcus said.

Paging companies' voice mail was still operating, but pagers weren't beeping or vibrating to indicate a message had been received. People with pagers had to call to check for messages.

Some paging service was switched to other PanAmSat satellites, Marcus said. There was no indication when all paging and media feeds would be restored.

PanAmSat would not disclose its customer list, but Scott Baradell, a spokesman for PageNet, one of several paging companies whose services were interrupted, estimated that 80 percent to 90 percent of the 40 million to 45 million U.S. pager users lost service.

"This is the first time in 35 years that pagers have gone silent," said John Beletic, chairman and chief executive officer of Dallas-based PageMart Wireless. "Virtually all paging companies have been affected."

Baradell said it would take about a day for his company to finish switching service for most of its 10.5 million customers. The only customers not affected were those whose connections are through ground-based radio transmitters, he said.

The pager problem was of particular concern to doctors. Dr. Steve Dickens, a cardiologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said he spent the night at the hospital because of the problem.

"I have to tell (the hospital) what to do and how to respond," he said. "We have a good support staff, but protocol says they can't make a decision without first calling the doctor."

Antitrust lawsuit

On December 1, 2008, Multiven filed an antitrust lawsuit against Cisco Systems, Inc.

Cisco responded by accusing the person who filed the anti-trust suit, British-born Peter Alfred-Adekeye, with hacking and pressured the US government to extradite him from Canada, where he was giving evidence against Cisco in an anti-trust hearing. Canadian Judge Ronald McKinnon, who oversaw the extradition hearing, stated the real reason for the extradition proceedings was because Alfred-Adekeye "dared to take on a multinational giant."

Subject: Tank City

Damn, I was so close on that.

In recent days the meteor I imagined striking the planet's surface would hit in the southwestern United States where atomic testing has happened. I gave that some serious thought. I thought how that would be a warning to Barack Obama. I thought about how dangerous a meteorite strike would be there because it would kick up radioactive contamination.

But nope, a few hours ago the meteor I read about bursting over a large city was in Russia. Known as Tank City during World War 2 because of production facilities I also read it is considered the most polluted city in the world because it was the center of plutonium production.

All they need is some bearskins now, Mr. Spock, because the Russians reported that the meteor on 14th February 2013 collapsed a very large roof section of a zinc factory in that town where reported 400 people sought medical treatment.

Is that a first? A first in recorded history? There have been other times when meteors struck but is that the first time a city has been damaged and the first time people sought medical treatment for a meteor strike?
