Reagan was president of the Screen Actors Guild at this time. His interest and involvement in politics was really only beginning. He was, however, a committed anti-Communist, and here cooperated with HUAC in commenting on the alleged activities of communists in Hollywood and the Screen Actors Guild.
STRIPLING: Mr. Reagan, what is your feeling about what steps should be taken to rid the motion picture industry of any communist influences?
REAGAN: Well, sir, 99 percent of us are pretty well aware of what is going on, and I think, within the bounds of our democratic rights and never once stepping over the rights given us by democracy, we have done a pretty good job in our business of keeping those people's activities curtailed. After all, we must recognize them at present as a political party. On that basis we have exposed their lies when we came across them, we have opposed their propaganda, and I can certainly testify that in the case of the Screen Actors Guild we have been eminently successful in preventing them from, with their usual tactics, trying to run a majority of an organization with a well organized minority. In opposing those people, the best thing to do is make democracy work. In the Screen Actors Guild we make it work by insuring everyone a vote and by keeping everyone informed. I believe that, as Thomas Jefferson put it, if all the American people know all of the facts they will never make a mistake. Whether the party should be outlawed, that is a matter for the government to decide. As a citizen, I would hesitate to see any political party outlawed on the basis of its political ideology. However, if it is proven that an organization is an agent of foreign power, or in any way not a legitimate political party -- and I think the government is capable of proving that -- then that is another matter.

Anyone can demagog, but the Presidents must make decisions. And so, let me tell you what has guided me as I've tried to do for America what is right and true.
I learned, and I expect we all did, I learned a great deal when I was young from the greatest teachers I ever had, and that was my parents. And at church and in dinner and in political talks with my mom and my dad, I learned that life means nothing without fidelity to principles. It's what I believed as a Navy pilot in World War II, as a businessman, and now as your President. It's why, for example, I've vetoed 26 bills, standing up against the Democratic Congress. And I'm proud to say not one single one of them was overridden. Sometimes you have to make the tough call.

Remarks to the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia in Columbia, South Carolina
March 5, 1992
Thank you very, very much, Carroll. Thank you all so much. What a nice welcome back to South Carolina. Thank you very, very much. It's great to be here. To Richard Sendler, congratulations on you and Carolyn's 26th wedding anniversary. The man knows timing. Timing is everything in life. And Governor Campbell, my dear friend Carroll, thank you for that generous introduction. We are grateful for your hospitality, for your leadership as one of America's greatest Governors.
Carroll mentioned the Governors' conference where we set these national education goals, a first. Wasn't just Republican Governors, wasn't just Democrats, all coming together to set national education goals that led to a program that will revolutionize our education. What he didn't tell you is he and only two or three others, maybe it was three, were the true leaders in designing this brandnew approach to revolutionizing education in America and bringing us into a competitive scheme for the next century. We are going to again be the leaders in education, and your Governor has been in the forefront of that change. And I am very, very proud that Carroll Campbell will serve as the national cochairman of my campaign, and once again, he's handling a lot of duties as the southern regional chairman.
Good morning to the other members on the dais here, Chuck Newman, Mike McMichael, and Dottie Lafitte-Woolston. America still remembers your strength, the strength and resilience shown by South Carolina during Hurricane Hugo. I promise not to be quite that windy today. [Laughter] It's great to be back in this State where political victory is in the air. And then it'll be on to the fall where already there's a battle shaping up. Both sides will go on the offensive and all out. And in the end, there will only be one winner. And I don't know if it'll be the Gamecocks or the Tigers, but you can bet there's a battle. [Laughter]
We were riding in from the airport here, I saw a guy with a Tigers T-shirt on. So I picked up the loudspeaker from the car there and said, "Go Clemson!" Carroll said, "Say Gamecocks! Say Gamecocks!" [Laughter] And so never forgets the politics.
And I'm going to ask everybody what today I ask of you: Help me -- what we've started -- help me move our country forward. Help me win the Presidency for 4 more years. And I ask your support for the simplest reason. I believe we believe in the same things: jobs, family, peace, world peace, the important things. And we know that taxes are too high because our Government is too big and spends too much. And we believe in faith and family, responsibility and respect, community and country, a strong defense and a strong economy. And we know that we put America first when we put America's families first.
So often politicians do the easy things, the popular things. But it is the tough things that tell you something about character and honor and leadership. Anyone can demagog, but the Presidents must make decisions. And so, let me tell you what has guided me as I've tried to do for America what is right and true.
I learned, and I expect we all did, I learned a great deal when I was young from the greatest teachers I ever had, and that was my parents. And at church and in dinner and in political talks with my mom and my dad, I learned that life means nothing without fidelity to principles. It's what I believed as a Navy pilot in World War II, as a businessman, and now as your President. It's why, for example, I've vetoed 26 bills, standing up against the Democratic Congress. And I'm proud to say not one single one of them was overridden. Sometimes you have to make the tough call.
Some of them were popular, but all, in my view, were ill-advised. And the Presidency is not a popularity contest. I think you elect a President to say what America needs to hear, even when it's not what people want to hear. In the campaign you hear all kinds of quick fixes, all kinds of political rhetoric, but a President must make decisions and lead.
And Carroll Campbell knows exactly what I'm talking about. And so does that great favorite son of South Carolina, Strom Thurmond. Like me, they believe in these eternal truths that don't change. And so did another South Carolinian, a good man from Columbia, Lee Atwater, my dear friend.
All of us know how values guide each of us every day of every year. It's true in your families; it's true in mine. It's these things that have helped bring America to a new world, a new era in our history. Carroll touched on it.
We've got a lot to be grateful for. The cold war is over, and America won. The Soviet Union collapsed, and imperial communism is a four-letter word, D-E-A-D, dead. I salute my predecessor, Ronald Reagan. American leadership changed the world. Republican leadership will change America.
We believe that parents, not the Government, should make the decisions that matter in life. Parents, not Government, should choose their children's schools. I believe in school choice. And parents, not the Government, should choose who cares for their children. Parents know better than some bureaucrat in Washington, DC, and that's why we fought for a child care bill that has choice as its fundamental practice. And yes, I still believe that there is a place for voluntary prayer in our children's classrooms. And when things aren't right, we've got to change them.
We've got to reform America's health care system. And right now the quality, the quality of American health care, is the best in the entire world, bar none. And the problem? The problem is access to care. Too many Americans, many with families, do not have health insurance coverage. And you know how even a short stay in the hospital can rip a hole right through a family's budget.
But socialized medicine is not the answer. If we wanted long lines and revolving-door health care, we'd put doctors to work down at the department of motor vehicles. You can go there every single day and get those long lines and revolving people coming in and out of there. Nationalized health care would be a national disaster, it really would. And the last thing we want is the Government playing doctor. We've got to reform, and so our program says make insurance accessible to all, rich and poor alike. And that's the program that we need to bring health care to those who don't have it adequately now in our country.
And we've got to reform our country's legal system. The home of the free has become the land of the lawsuit. When you're as likely to serve your neighbor a subpoena as a cup of coffee, something is wrong. Medical malpractice suits, they've become an epidemic worse than many of the diseases. And we've got to turn this mess around, and we need to spend more time helping one another than suing one another. And that's why we've sent up there to the Capitol Hill a reform bill, a major reform bill to curtail needless lawsuits and give people easier ways to solve disputes out of court. Your industry depends on partnership. And if you'll join hands with me to pass legal reform, we can get this country moving in the right direction.
And we've got to reform our welfare system, make a connection between welfare and work. And yes, we're a compassionate country. We care. Americans care. And they will support welfare for families in need. But Americans want to see government at every level work together to track down the deadbeat dads, the ones who can't be bothered to pay child support. They want to see us somehow break this cycle, this pessimistic cycle of dependency that destroys dignity and passes down poverty from one generation to another generation and then to another generation. That's wrong. That's cruel. And we're working to change it right now. We're encouraging the States to innovate with workfare, with plans that help people break welfare dependency and begin learning, begin learning work skills.
This brings me, then, to what I'm sure we would all agree is the number one issue: the economy and how we change it. We must help people worried about providing for their families, meeting the challenges of paying the bills and providing a home and setting aside for retirement.
So, let me take a page from Richard Sendler's book and tell it like it is. My program will put America back to work. My State of the Union Message put forth a two-part plan that will get our economy running the way Richard Petty likes to move. My plan says: U.S. economy, start your engines. And when we carry out this plan, it's going to carry our competitive American workers and businesses all the way to the victory lane.
The first part of the plan, some of you are familiar with it, aims to get business growing right now. I want an investment tax allowance, speed up depreciation. I want Congress to quit punishing people who create jobs, and thus, I want to see a cut on the capital gains tax and get this country back to work.
And then there's the proposal that can help get the housing market going again. I'm feeling better about it, but it needs this: a $5,000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers, money that will help people buy a first home. And here's what that credit, that $5,000 credit will mean to South Carolina: 3,400 housing starts, 6,600 jobs. And if Congress passes my plan, the National Association of Home Builders predicts 415,000 new construction industry jobs and $20 billion, $20 billion in new economy activity across America.
My plan will help people like the Greater Columbia Home Builders sell and build homes. And for the family looking to buy that first home, that $5,000 credit means 8 months of mortgage payments on the average South Carolina home. I wish Congress, if they don't do anything else, I wish they would lay aside the politics of tax-and-spend and give that one break to the American economy and watch homebuilding lead out of this slow economic time.
Sadly, the liberal crowd that controls Congress doesn't seem to understand the things that matter to you: your home, your business, taking care of your kids. And otherwise last week's House Democrats wouldn't have passed a bill which reminds me of the old joke: It'll make builders sleep like babies. They'll wake up every hour and cry. [Laughter]
Listen to the deal: 25 cents a day in temporary tax relief for 2 years, paid for by a large permanent tax increase. Over in the Senate, the bill the Democrats are working on is not much better than the one in the House. And its centerpiece is, yes, you guessed it, a huge tax increase. And the last thing our economy needs now is a $100 billion tax hike.
We drew a line in the sand in the Persian Gulf, and we kept our words. And I'm going to draw another line in the sand right now. If the Democrats send me a monstrosity like the House bill, I will veto that bill the minute it hits my desk and send it right back to those people on Capitol Hill.
Our plan has two parts. And I also call on Congress to pass the second part of our economic plan, now. I stressed this in the State of the Union: short-term, quick, done by March 20th; and a longer term, but I want it passed now, things like education reform, support for enhanced research and development so we'll be competitive in the years ahead, a $500 tax deduction to strengthen the family for each child.
We must make America more competitive in the 21st century, helping us lead economically abroad so that we can succeed economically at home. And some, of course, don't want us to lead. They want to build a fence around America. Tell that to South Carolina. Here are an estimated 125,000 trade-related jobs. And by closing our borders as my opponents would, we'd put those people out of work. And the U.S. trying to build prosperity by turning its back on the world is like your trying to build prosperity without hammers and nails. Call it protectionism or isolationism, both mean surrender. And look closely. That is not the American flag they're waving; it's the white flag of surrender. And that is not the America that you or I know. We are going to stay engaged. We are going to sell abroad.
And of course, the playing field has to be level. Fair trade is the priority. My fight to open trade markets is paying off for America's farmers and manufacturers. Our overall trade imbalance is down. Still got a ways to go. Still need more access to foreign markets. But look at these figures. In 1988, the trade deficit stood at $119 billion. Today, it's dropped to $66 billion, a 44-percent drop. And I will continue to fight hard to open up markets for our exports all around the world. And that's the way to fight for South Carolina jobs and for South Carolina families.
Recently, Barbara and I saw a movie based on a book in South Carolina. I'm sure many of you saw it, "The Prince of Tides," where the author writes, "the southern way of the spirit." The southern way of the spirit, to me, the southern spirit is optimistic. It is confident. It is so clearly patriotic. And you never run this country down. You don't believe in the politics of hate, either. And I think you'd agree that sometimes it's important to talk a little about what is right in America, and there is plenty to talk about.
Let's talk for just a minute about the bravest and best young men and women in America, the volunteer guardsmen and reservists, the volunteer soldiers, sailors, and airmen who answered the call in Desert Storm. South Carolina's young men and women answered that call by the thousands. Their service told America and the world: Never will America tuck tail and let aggression stand. And we'll do what's right and good. And when we do so, we will prevail.
Now, of course, there were those who didn't support us then, and there are those who second-guess us now. But not you. When our kids laid it all on the line, those brave young men and women laid it all on the line, the people of South Carolina never wavered. And again, I want to thank South Carolinians for showing America at its best. The country came together in victory. And that spirit of optimism, that can-do spirit, must be our spirit as we lead this country out of the economic doldrums and into a prosperity, the likes of which we never would have seen.
And now in our fight to change America, we still have much to do. But I am absolutely confident we'll get the job done. And yes, we have challenges before us. But I guarantee you we'll meet them head on, each and every one. And yes, there's a big election here on Saturday. And I don't like to see this many people gathered together without mentioning it. [Laughter] And there's another one in November. And I don't want to come across as arrogant, but I believe I'm going to win. I believe I'm going to win the election on Saturday. I believe I'm going to win the election in the fall.
And I ask for your support to help keep our party strong and united. I want to be your President for 4 more years. I will try my level-best to continue to lead this country with honor, with decency, with respect for the principles that all of us hold dear.
Barbara and I are very, very privileged, and we know it. Every single day we live in that White House, we know that we are amongst the most privileged in the world to be able to serve in this way. I'm going to continue to try my hardest. I'm going to continue to do my level-best for the people of this country. I ask for your support.

Plot Summary
Undercover agent Mark Owens is sent to aid the Border Patrol in the trans-border town of Hernandez in breaking up a well-organized band of smugglers. Since the town is also noted for a place for obtaining quick marriages on the Mexico side, Mark obtains the job of pilot on "The Honeymoon Express." He does not realize that he has been recognized as a G-Man by "Hot Cake" Joe, operator of a sandwich stand and an informant for the smugglers. Reporter Nancy Rawlings, assigned to the airport on the American side of the border, sees Mike running the matrimonial express in his flamboyant uniform, and thinks he is ridiculous enough to make a good story. Her suspicions are aroused when he refuses to be photographed. She is further convinced he is a smuggler when she sees him accepting money from Kurt Feldon, suspected head of the smugglers. Feldon has accepted Mike as a genuine pilot for wedding parties and is paying him to steer customers to his café. On Feb. 13, as controversy swirled around President Bush’s service in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War, the White House released more than 400 pages of documents on the press corps, proving, it claimed, that Bush had served honorably and fulfilled his commitment. The sudden rush of records, often redundant, jumbled and out of chronological order, generally left reporters baffled. From Bush’s point of view, the document dump was a political success, as the controversy cooled and the paper trail ran dry.
In retrospect, it’s doubtful that even White House aides understood all the information embedded in the records, specifically the payroll documents. It’s also unlikely they realized how damaging the information could be when read in the proper context. Seven months later, the document dump is coming back to haunt the White House, thanks to researcher Paul Lukasiak, who has spent that time closely examining the paperwork, and more important, analyzing U.S. statutory law, Department of Defense regulations, and Air Force policies and procedures of the 1960s and 1970s. As a result, Lukasiak arrived at the overwhelming conclusion that not only did Bush walk away from his final two years of military obligation, coming dangerously close to desertion, but he attempted to cover up his absenteeism through swindle and fraud.

The Prisoner of War Medal is a military award of the United States armed forces which was authorized by Congress and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on 8 November 1985. The United States Code citation for the POW Medal statute is 10 U.S.C. § 1128.
The Prisoner of War Medal may be awarded to any person who was a prisoner of war after April 5, 1917, (the date of the United States entry into World War I was the 6th). It is awarded to any person who was taken prisoner or held captive while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing Armed Force; or while serving with friendly forces engaged in armed conflict against an opposing Armed Force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. South Carolina's young men and women answered that call by the thousands. Their service told America and the world: Never will America tuck tail and let aggression stand. And we'll do what's right and good. And when we do so, we will prevail.

Transferred in 1926 to the U.S.S. San Pablo (whose crew is nicknamed the "Sand Pebbles"), a gunboat serving on the Yangtze River Patrol in China, engineer Holman finds that Chinese coolies are actually doing most of the work on the ship. When he insists on working on the ship's engines himself, he earns the enmity of the Chinese "boss" of the engine room. Captain Collins (Richard Crenna) dismisses Holman's warnings that the machinery needs significant maintenance, and when the ship experiences inevitable engine troubles, the engine room boss is crushed to death by a giant piston when Holman lets him attempt the repair. The head coolie boss bitterly blames Holman for the accident.
Told to train a replacement for the dead man, Holman chooses Po-Han (Mako), whom he also befriends, overcoming his bigoted assumptions about the intellectual abilities of the Chinese.

The Gulf War has demonstrated yet again the central importance of electronic warfare to the conduct of a modern air war. So overwhelming was the weight of the initial attack, that the Iraqi IADS (integrated air defence system) collapsed in hours, never to regain anything approaching a semblance of functionality.
What transpired was no surprise to informed observers, as the Libyan raid of 1986 and Israeli strike on the Bekaa Valley in 1982 both produced similar effects, albeit on a much smaller scale. It was clear that a repeat performance was a certainty if hostilities did break out, the only uncertainty lay in its form and timing.
The extensive television coverage of the air war from the outset provided a clear indication of what was happening, and the queues of HARM loaded F-4G Weasels and F/A-18s congesting Saudi taxiways left no doubt whatsoever as to the ferocity of the battle taking place hundreds of miles away. It was quite clear to informed observers that Iraq's IADS was on the receiving end of an unprecedented assault, very different from the piecemeal Weasel and Iron Hand operations of the Vietnam period.
The destruction of Iraq's IADS is a very good study of contemporary Western doctrine in the area of electronic combat, and deserves thus a close examination.
The Target - The Iraqi IADS
Australian Aviation published two brief reviews of Iraq's electronic order of battle, in November 1990 and April 1991. The Iraqi IADS was a composite system which integrated European and Soviet search and acquisition radars, and a range of Soviet and European SAM and AAA systems, all tied together with a French built Kari C3 (Command/Control/Communications) network. While smaller than the now defunct Soviet system in central Europe (Western TVD), the system had a respectable capability and comparable if not higher density of SAM and AAA systems, with considerable redundancy in communications links and hardened C3 facilities.
Organisationally the IADS was split into three principal elements, a national fixed site strategic system using fighters and SA-2 and SA-3 systems covering key airfields and strategic air defence sites, operated by the Iraqi air force. This system was supplemented by Republican Guard operated SAM and AAA systems covering key nuclear, biological and chemical warfare facilities. Finally, the Iraqi army had its own mobile radar, SAM and AAA systems tasked with protecting both fixed sites and units in the field.
Geographically the national IADS was split into several large zones, in each of which were located central local C3 facilities, one or more large hardened airbases and a network of communications links to fixed radar and SAM sites. Control of the whole network was centred in hardened facilities in the vicinity of Baghdad. While microwave links were used extensively, these were backed up by landlines.
The structure of the system reflected the Soviet Air Defence Force (PVO) and Army Air Defence (PVO-SV) models respectively. The strategic air defences employed large GCI/EW (Ground Controlled Intercept/Early Warning) radars such as the Soviet P-35M and P-37 Bar Lock, which were used for wide area surveillance and early warning, these large MTI (Moving Target Indicator - ie low PRF) E/F (2.6-3 GHz) band systems being situated at key geographical locations to cover principal air bases and population centres.
Bar Lock systems employ a pair of trailer mounted truncated paraboloid reflectors, and have a range of the order of 120 NM, the whole antenna/trailer assembly rotating at 12 rpm for 360 degree scan with six stacked beams for approximate height finding. Where low level coverage is required, they are typically supplemented by a Side Net E-band nodding height finding radar.
The air force operated GCI/EW system formed the top tier of the IADS, supporting fighters with GCI vectors, but also datalinking early warning information down to individual SAM and AAA batteries.
These were in turn directly supported by a range of early warning and acquisition radars, mobile and relocatable, such as the Flat Face, Squat Eye and Spoon Rest. These acquisition radars played a key role in the IADS, as they provided precise tracking information to SAM systems. They would also, under proper operating conditions, remain off the air until a target was to be engaged, at which time they would light up, acquire and track the target and feed the target's parameters to the fire control radars associated with the SAM and AAA systems in use.

The Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda (German: Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda or Propagandaministerium) was Nazi Germany's ministry that enforced Nazi Party ideology in Germany and regulated its culture and society. Founded on March 13, 1933, by Adolf Hitler's new National Socialist government, the Ministry was headed by Dr. Joseph Goebbels and was responsible for controlling the press and culture of Nazi Germany.
The Ministry was based in the Ordenspalais in Berlin-Mitte on the Wilhelmplatz across from the Reich Chancellery.
Role in the Nazi state
When the Nazis took power the Propaganda Ministry was established almost immediately. It was charged with enforcing Nazi doctrine on the people and controlling public opinion. However, the Ministry became even more important after the outbreak of war.
World War II was conducted with a much greater level of propaganda than World War I, especially in the new media of film and radio. Because of practical experience and scientific occupation with propaganda in Europe and USA, propaganda was organised in a planned fashion. A new psychological warfare was born.
Organization
The Ministry grew steadily. It began in 1933 with five departments and 350 employees. By 1939, there were 2000 employees in 17 departments. Between 1933 and 1941, the Ministry's budget grew from 14 million to 187 million Reichsmarks. Three state secretaries were subordinate to Joseph Goebbels
Propaganda

The Propaganda Ministry used many media to further the National Socialist message and maintain control over the people. Posters, newspapers, publishing, and the arts were all used and explicitly controlled by the Ministry.
Speeches were also used to great effect by the German Government. Goebbels commented on Hitler's first speech as Chancellor: "It will have great propaganda value...be used and viewed in cinemas for years to come...what an achievement."
Just before Hitler delivered this speech Goebbels introduced him and used the opportunity to highlight the importance of propaganda. "It seems you cannot have a good government without good propaganda, but then, you can't have good propaganda without a good government. However, you cannot lie! We must never lie!

Not too long ago one of our Ambassadors visited an American armored cavalry regiment stationed on the NATO line in Germany. As he returned to his helicopter, he was followed by a young 19-year-old trooper. The trooper asked him if he could get a message to the President. Well, the Ambassador said that sometimes getting messages to the President was part of his job. And the young trooper then said, "Will you tell him we're proud to be here, and we ain't scared of nothin."
Well, not long ago the Ambassador was in Washington and told me the sequel to that incident. I'd repeated a story in a talk that was carried on our Voice of America radio program, and there in that base in Germany the young trooper heard the broadcast and knew that I'd received his message. His commanding officer said that he ran down the company street yelling: "The system works! The system works!"

In August 1989, less than a month before the shooting, Wesbecker had started taking Prozac. The wounded and the families of those killed filed a lawsuit against manufacturer Eli Lilly and Company, claiming that Wesbecker's use of Prozac contributed to his actions. The jury decided 9-3 for Lilly. Not until several years later was it revealed that Lilly had arranged a settlement with the plaintiffs in exchange for setting legal precedent.

He had forgotten his dreams of burning Chicago to the ground—his dreams of more oiltanks and freightcars full of LP gas tucked away on railroad sidings and the tinder-dry tenements. He didn’t care a fig for the Windy City. That afternoon he broke into a Chicago Heights doctor’s office and stole a case of morphine syrettes. The morphine drove back the pain a little, but it had a more important side-effect: it made him care less about the pain he did feel.
He took a huge jar of Vaseline from a drugstore that night and packed the burned part of his arm in an inch of the jelly. He was very thirsty; it seemed he wanted to drink all of the time. Fantasies of the dark man buzzed in and out of his mind like blowflies. When he collapsed at dusk, he had already begun to think that the city the dark man was directing him to must be Cibola, Seven-in-One, the City that is Promised.
That night the dark man came to him again in his dreams, and with a sardonic giggle confirmed that this was so.
Trashcan Man awoke from these confused dream-memories of what had been to shivering desert cold. In the desert it was always ice or fire; there was no in-between.
Moaning a little, he stood up, holding himself as close to himself as he could. Overhead a trillion stars gleamed, seeming almost close enough to touch, bathing the desert in their cold witchlight.
He walked back to the road, wincing at his chafed and tender skin, and his many aches and pains. They were little to him now. He paused for a moment looking down at the city, dreaming in the night (there were little sparks of light here and there, like electric campfires). Then he began to walk.
When dawn began to color the sky hours later, Cibola seemed almost as distant as it had when he first came over the rise and saw it. And he had foolishly drunk all of his water, forgetting how magnified things looked out here. He didn’t dare walk for long after sunrise because of the dehydration. He would have to lie up again before the sun rose in all its power.
An hour past dawn he came to a Mercedes-Benz off the road, its right side drifted in sand up to the door panels. He opened one of the left side doors and pulled the two wrinkled, monkeylike occupants out—an old woman wearing a lot of bangled jewelry, an old man with theatrical-looking white hair. Muttering, Trash took the keys from the ignition, went around, and opened the trunk. Their suitcases were not locked. He hung a variety of clothes over the windows of the Mercedes, weighting them down with rocks. Now he had a cool, dim cave.
He crawled in and went to sleep. Miles to the west, the city of Las Vegas gleamed in the light of the summer sun.
He couldn’t drive a car, they had never taught him that in prison, but he could ride a bike. On July 4, the day that Larry Underwood discovered Rita Blakemoor had overdosed and died in her sleep, Trashcan Man took a ten-speed and began to ride. At first his progress was slow, because his left arm wasn’t much good to him. He fell off twice that first day, once squarely on his burn, causing terrible agony. By then the burn was suppurating freely through the Vaseline and the smell was terrific. He wondered from time to time about gangrene but would not allow himself to wonder for long. He began to mix the Vaseline with an antiseptic ointment, not knowing if it would help, but feeling it certainly couldn’t hurt any. It made a milky, viscous gloop that looked like semen.
Little by little he adjusted to riding the bike mostly one-handed and found that he could make good speed. The land had flattened out and most of the time he could keep the bike speeding giddily along. He drove himself steadily in spite of the burn and the light-headedness that came from being constantly stoned on morphine. He drank gallons of water and ate prodigiously. He pondered the dark man’s words: I will set you high in my artillery. You are the man I want. How lovely those words were—had anyone really wanted him before? The words played over and over in his mind as he pedaled under the hot Midwestern sun. And he began to hum the melody of a little tune called “Down to the Nightclub” under his breath. The words (“Ci-a-bola! Bumpty-bumpty-bump! ”) came in their own good time. He was not then as insane as he was to become, but he was advancing.
On July 8, the day Nick Andros and Tom Cullen saw buffalo grazing in Comanche County, Kansas, Trashcan Man crossed the Mississippi at the Quad Cities of Davenport, Rock Island, Bettendorf, and Moline. He was in Iowa.
On the fourteenth, the day Larry Underwood woke up near the big white house in eastern New Hampshire, Trashy crossed the Missouri north of Council Bluffs and entered Nebraska. He had regained some use of his left hand, his leg muscles had toned up, and he pressed on, feeling a huge need to hurry, hurry.
It was on the west side of the Missouri that Trash first suspected that God Himself might intervene between Trashcan Man and his destiny. There was something wrong about Nebraska, something dreadfully wrong. Something that made him afraid. It looked about the same as Iowa… but it wasn’t. The dark man had come to him every previous night in dreams, but when Trashy crossed into Nebraska, the dark man came no more.
Instead, he began to dream about an old woman. In these dreams he would find himself belly-down in a cornfield, almost paralyzed with hate and fear. It was bright morning. He could hear flocks of crows cawing. In front of him was a screen of broad, sword-like corn-leaves. Not wanting to, but powerless to stop himself, he would spread the leaves with a shaking hand and peer between them. He saw an old house in the middle of a clearing. The house was up on blocks or jacks or something. There was an apple tree with a tire swing hanging from one of the branches. And sitting on the porch was an old black woman playing a guitar and singing some old-time spiritual song. The song varied from dream to dream and Trashcan knew most of them because he had once known a woman, the mother of a boy named Donald Merwin Elbert, who had sung many of the same songs as she did her housework.
This dream was a nightmare, but not just because something exceedingly horrible happened at the end of it. At first you would have said there wasn’t a frightening element in the whole dream. Corn? Blue sky? Old woman? Tire swing? What could be frightening about those things? Old women didn’t throw rocks and jeer, especially not old women that sang old-home Jesus-jumping songs like “In That Great Getting-Up Morning” and “Bye-and-Bye, Sweet Lord, Bye-and-Bye.” It was the Carley Yateses of the world who threw rocks.
But long before the dream ended he was paralyzed with fear, as if it wasn’t an old woman at all he was peeking at but at some secret, some barely concealed light that seemed ready to break out all around her, to play over her with a fiery brilliance that would make the flaming oiltanks of Gary seem like so many candles in the wind—a light so bright it would chalk his eyes to cinders. And during this part of the dream all he thought was: Oh please get me away from her, I don’t want no part of that old biddy, please oh please get me out of Nebraska!
Then whatever song she had been playing would come to a discordant, jangling stop. She would look right at the place where he was peeping through a tiny loophole in the broad lattice of leaves. Her face was old and seamed with wrinkles, her hair was thin enough to show her brown skull, but her eyes were bright as diamonds, full of the light he feared.
In an old, cracked, but strong voice she would cry out: Weasels in the corn! and he would feel the change in himself and would look down to see he had become a weasel, a terry, brownish-black slinking thing, his nose grown long and sharp, his eyes melted down to beady black points, his fingers turned into claws. He was a weasel, a cowardly nocturnal thing preying on the weak and the small.
He would begin to scream then, and eventually he would scream himself awake, streaming with sweat and buggy-eyed. His hands would fly over his body, reassuring himself that all his human parts were still there. At the end of this panicky check he would grip his head, making sure it was still a human head and not something long and sleek and streamlined, furry and bullet-shaped.
He crossed four hundred miles of Nebraska in three days, running mostly on high octane terror.

Somewhere that strange Trashcan Man was in the desert, sniffing out the weapons which would eradicate the troublesome, worrisome Free Zone forever. His Eye could not follow the Trashcan Man, and in some ways Flagg thought that Trash was stranger than he was himself, a kind of human bloodhound who sniffed cordite and napalm and gelignite with deadly radar accuracy.
In a month or less, the National Guard jets would be flying, with a full complement of Shrike missiles tucked under their wings. And when he was sure that the bride had conceived, they would fly east.
He looked dreamily up at the basketball moon and smiled.
There was one other possibility. He thought the Eye would show him, in time. He might go there, possibly as a crow, possibly as a wolf, possibly as an insect—a praying mantis, perhaps, something small enough to squirm through a carefully concealed vent cap in the middle of a spiky patch of desert grass. He would hop or crawl through dark conduits and finally slip through an air conditioner grille or a stilled exhaust fan.
The place was underground. Just over the border and into California.
There were beakers there, rows and rows of beakers, each with its own neat Dymo tape identifying it: a super cholera, a super anthrax, a new and improved version of the bubonic plague, all of them based on the shifting-antigen ability that had made the superflu so almost universally deadly. There were hundreds of them in this place; assorted flavors, as they used to say in the Life Savers commercials.

Small Town, Nation Ask: Why? -- Boyfriend Wrote That He Didn't Want Smith's Kids, Say Police

UNION, S.C. - She spun a heartbreaking tale of being dumped on a lonely road by a carjacker who abducted her two young sons. Today, she was jeered by spectators and covered her face as she headed for the courthouse.
Susan Smith, whose tearful pleas for her sons' return inspired a nationwide vigil, was charged with killing 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alex. And the nine-day search by authorities and hundreds of volunteers ended where their mother's story began: at John D. Long Lake, where a car with two small bodies was found.
CNN, citing an unidentified source, said Smith became a strong suspect when investigators found a letter from a boyfriend telling her he wanted to be with her but he "did not want any kids around."
WIS-TV in Columbia said it received a letter today from a lawyer representing a Tom Findlay of Union, identifying Findlay as the boyfriend. According to the station, the statement said Findlay broke off the relationship with Smith on Oct. 18 because he was not ready to assume the responsibilities of being a father. It also said he knew nothing about the killings.
The station would not identify the lawyer, and there was no answer today at the phone number listed for Tom Findlay in Union.
Emotions were high as Smith, 23, was driven from the York County Detention Center in Rock Hill, where she was held overnight, to the Union County courthouse for her first hearing on two murder charges.
"Hold your head up! You're a baby murderer!" shouted Gloria Smith, one of those in the pack.
After coming to the courthouse, though, Smith opted not to attend a brief hearing. Her lawyer, David Bruck, waived her right to a bond hearing, and Circuit Judge Larry Patterson said she would remain in custody without bond.
Bruck is a death-penalty expert, but he said, "That is not the reason I was retained." Solicitor Thomas Pope, the prosecutor, had said he would consider seeking the death penalty against Smith.
Bruck would not discuss a possible defense strategy or other aspects of the case. All he would say about Smith was that "she is heartbroken."
Because of local officials' concerns about her safety, Gov. Carroll Campbell signed an order transferring Smith to state custody at the Women's Correctional Center north of Columbia, S.C.
Smith's burgundy 1990 Mazda was pulled out of the lake last night, the bodies of two children in the back seat.
The children drowned when the car was submerged, Union County Sheriff Howard Wells said today. He said it was "accurate" to conclude that the children were alive when the car went into the lake.

NEW YORK — A gigantic underground explosion believed caused by a car bomb rocked the 110-story World Trade Center on Friday, killing at least five people, injuring more than 500 and leaving a four-story crater beneath the world's second-tallest building.
Lower Manhattan was transformed into gridlocked chaos as emergency vehicles filled the streets and shards of glass from windows broken by panicked upper-floor workers showered the area.
Survivors, their faces and clothes covered with soot, groped their way down smoke-filled staircases and out of One World Trade Center. Those working in the center's twin tower were stranded as well when power was cut.
About 50,000 people work in the two buildings and more than 200,000 visit daily.
Even in a city used to the unexpected and dreadful, this was an urban nightmare; those who had thought they were safely at work found themselves frightfully vulnerable.
About four hours after the 12:18 p.m. (EST) explosion, the Empire State Building was evacuated as a precaution, reportedly after police received a call saying a bomb had been planted at that landmark.
The New York area's three major airports reportedly also were placed on alert in case the blast was part of a larger terrorist plan.
Frank McCarton, a spokesman for New York's Emergency Medical Service, said that as of Friday evening there were five dead, 518 treated and transported to area hospitals and another 213 treated at the scene and released. He said an emergency unit had been established on the 43rd floor of the tower.
There was no indication some sort of accident caused the mammoth blast and two-hour fire in the second sublevel of an underground parking garage. At least two people were killed there, fire officials said.
New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, in a telephone interview on the "Larry King Live" television show, said late Friday that it has "been established that it was a bomb placed on the floor of the parking garage."
"Where the damage is, there is no transformer or other equipment that could have exploded with such magnitude," said Charles Maikish, director of the World Trade Center.
Local news reports said that 15 minutes before the explosion, a man with a heavy foreign accent called 911 and said a bomb would go off near the World Trade Center. He reportedly said he was a member of a former Yugoslav republic, but did not specify which one.
James Fox, assistant director of the New York FBI office, told The New York Times that a joint terrorist task force of federal agents and city detectives had examined the wreckage and believed that a car bomb had caused the explosion, but this was not confirmed by local authorities.
"We have not determined the origin of the explosion," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. He said there had been at least seven calls claiming responsibility for the blast.
A deputy fire commissioner, however, was quoted as saying that officials believe as much as 200 pounds of explosives hidden in a car in the underground garage triggered the explosion.
Many reportedly were victims of smoke inhalation.
Among those stranded for several hours were two kindergarten classes visiting from Brooklyn.
As survivors stumbled out of the buildings into freezing temperatures, they told harrowing tales of groping their way down as many as 100 flights of stairs, often unable to see due to the dense smoke.
"I heard a boom and the power went off and came on again," said Masayo Kaneko, an executive with Sumitomo Bank on the 96th floor. "My friend and I went out to the elevator area and it was all smoky already, only three minutes later.
"I'm so tired," said Kaneko, 47, who spent two hours creeping down the smoky stairway.
"I was scared because as we went down, the smoke was worse and worse. But everyone said, `Calm down, calm down. Don't push.' Everyone was kind."
Said Donna Olsen, a futures trading specialist on the 37th floor: "I saw a huge explosion from my window. It was a huge, black flash. . . . We just got our stuff and got out. . . . The stairs were packed with people."
Firefighters reported the explosion blew a crater at least 50 feet wide and 50 feet deep in the reinforced concrete floor of the second basement level between the 23-year-old towers. The site of the blast contained a Port Authority maintenance office, locker room, cafeteria and operations center.
The blast also blew out the ceiling of an underground Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) train station taking passengers to and from New Jersey.
"Whatever it was, it was powerful enough that you can't imagine the devastation," said Hank Molle, a firefighter with Rescue One.
"Walls were down, ceilings were down, there were computers everywhere-one office looked completely devastated.

Army Braces For Onslaught Of Combat Stress

EASTERN SAUDI ARABIA — The psychological effects of fear and combat stress in the Persian Gulf war already have taken a toll on some of America`s half-million troops.
The first deaths in combat, the terror of missile attacks, the taking of Americans as prisoners and the months away from loved ones have brought home the reality of war, say doctors in the field and psychiatrists.
But the most severe test of the U.S. forces` mettle will come with ground combat, and doctors hope to help the troops handle that trauma with greater long-term success than was done during the Vietnam conflict.
The Army has begun interviewing and assessing thousands of frontline U.S. soldiers and plans to follow them during and after the war to determine their combat fatigue reactions.
The study is believed to be the first to link soldiers going into combat with a retrospective study, said Col. Joe Fagan, a psychiatric consultant to the Army Surgeon General and to the Central Command in Riyadh.
``We have several advantages over Vietnam,`` Fagan said. ``We don`t have the single-soldier rotation that we had in Vietnam. People came to Saudi Arabia in units.``
Friendships and bonds among soldiers in the same unit sustain them in battle, he said. Also, unlike Vietnam, ``People are basically supporting this war at home,`` added Fagan, director of residency training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.
``And we don`t have alcohol and drug abuse problems. There may be some, but the difficulty soldiers have getting it is effectively reducing the problems.``
Saudi Arabia, for religious reasons, strictly prohibits consumption of alcohol or drugs.
Still, the first month of Operation Desert Storm has produced psychological casualties, including loss of sleep, a normal reaction to combat stress.
``I don`t have boatloads, but people are coming in on a regular basis and saying this is difficult to handle,`` said Maj. Kelly Palmer, a psychiatrist near the front with a supply battalion in the 1st Infantry Division.
Palmer said he has been treating people for stress and anxiety, and expects their numbers to multiply when the ground offensive begins.
``If the coming battle is fast and victorious, there will be very few battle fatigue casualties,`` he said. But if the attack bogs down and units suffer defeats, or if chemical weapons are used, the cases of combat fatigue would rise.
In addition, some troops arriving at the front from Saudi port cities have been shaken by Iraqi Scud missile attacks, Palmer said. Though Patriot missile shoot down most Scuds, the attacks are frightening.
``I`m seeing people who saw Scuds overhead and didn`t realize how they were going to handle fear,`` he said. ``They have had startled reactions to noise, trouble sleeping. In time, most are working it out.``
``If you spend a lot of time thinking tomorrow may be your last day, you`re going to have trouble sleeping,`` said William McDaniel, another Army psychiatrist who is part of a team of two psychiatrists, a psychologist and five psychiatric nurses at Fleet Hospital Five.
``Sleep deprivation deprives you of your ability to put energy into other defenses,`` McDaniel said. ``The more tired you are, the less energy you have to think things through. This leads to errors of judgment that could be fatal in combat.``
One purpose of the round-the-clock allied bombing of Iraq and occupied Kuwait is to deny sleep to Iraqi troops.
U.S. commanders encourage their troops to get at least four uninterrupted hours of sleep a night-six hours is even better. They also urge them, whenever possible, to recall pleasant things and fond memories.
McDaniel said symptoms of combat fatigue include trouble concentrating, sitting still or performing tasks. Psychiatrists prescribe food, rest and self-care, but the best treatment is to get them back to their units.
``People really fight wars because of their friendships and their buddies, the guy or gal to the right or the left of them,`` said Fagan.
``That`s what really sustains them and makes them fight and persevere.``
In Vietnam, psychiatrists found combat stress in units that were fragmented or had lost confidence in their equipment, training or commanders. With the rapid rotation of soldiers in and out of combat areas, Fagan said,
``you didn`t have a unit that had grown to closely rely on each other.``
Israel`s studies of tank units during its 1973 war with Egypt showed that soldiers who trained together and worked closely tended to last longer, do better in battle and handle stress more easily, he said.
Another way of treating combat stress reaction is to sit down with the soldiers after battle and get them to talk through their experiences and understand, objectively, what happened to them.
Generally, most soldiers treated for combat stress are able to return to their units within 48 to 72 hours.
Combat usually does not produce a higher number of patients with real psychiatric disorders than civilian life. There are, however, reconditioning units where combat stress control teams help restore hard-hit patients by re- instilling military values and a sense that they still can serve useful functions even if they can`t return to battle.
Navy Lt. Comdr. Shelagh Meuser, 36, a psychiatric nurse from Portsmouth, Va., says many of her patients have trouble adjusting to life away from home and to being on a tour of indefinite duration.

N.Y. Explosion: Who And Why? -- Investigators Study Groups That Have Used Bombings, Search For Possible Motives

Trying to determine who was responsible for Friday's explosion at the World Trade Center in New York and why they did it, federal officials were examining the histories of terrorist groups yesterday in search of similarities in means and methods.
There appeared to be almost no doubt that the Trade Center explosion, which killed five people, was a bombing, although cautious investigators still weren't saying that for sure yesterday.
Those who have resorted to car bombs in the past - as Friday's explosion may have been - have displayed a wide range of skill and inventiveness in their choice of targets and their use of explosives.
Government and private experts on terrorist attacks say it takes more gall than skill to pack a vehicle with explosives. Even for a major blast, volume is the main requirement.
By comparison with the worst attacks, the experts said yesterday, the quantity of explosives used in Friday's explosion may - despite outward appearances - have been rather modest.
Like the tightly wrapped paper used to create a firecracker, the confined settings of an underground garage would have exaggerated the force of the explosion, which created a 100-foot-wide crater.

NEW YORK - Trapped in an elevator that was filling with smoke, Eugene Fasullo figured he'd better improvise or die.
But in his escape effort, Fasullo had an advantage over the hundreds of others trapped by the fire - he helped design the World Trade Center more than 20 years ago.
So, while a recorded voice in the elevator told them to just be patient, Fasullo and the seven others in the elevator began cutting their way through a wall, using the car keys in their pockets. They hacked away like frantic prisoners pulling a jailbreak.
When the elevator's emergency battery ran out, they used the dim lights from their pagers to guide their way though the darkness.
Finally, after three hours, Fasullo and the others broke through the elevator shaft into the stall of a 58th-floor restroom.
"I almost put my foot in the toilet bowl," he said yesterday. "But at that point in time, everything in the world looked beautiful, even that bowl."
"Because of our knowledge of the Trade Center - we helped build the thing - we knew what we had to cut through," said Fasullo, 62, director of engineering for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the World Trade Center.
Fasullo and four other Port Authority engineers had just left their office on the 72nd floor of One World Trade Center on Friday when the elevator shuddered to a halt. They tripped the alarm button.
"A voice came on and said, `We've recorded your message and be
patient,' " said Fasullo. "So we waited and waited. Time went by, and then all of a sudden some smoke started coming into the car.
"Then we started thinking maybe it was something bigger than the normal power outage, which happens all the time."
As the smoke thickened, the engineers began thinking about their options. They knew they were on an express elevator - which meant that below the 62nd floor, there are no doors leading from the shaft to the surrounding floors. So they could not just pry open the doors and slip out.
"We were yelling and screaming," he said, his voice hoarse from smoke. "We didn't hear a peep. Nothing."
So they decided to take action. First they pulled a panel off the side of the car. They met a steel wall. Then they pulled the ceiling down, but found no door to escape outside.
"Then we forced the elevator doors open," he said. "Luckily, they opened. That gave us the face of the shaft, a fire-rated wall."
The wall, he knew, was two 1-inch-thick pieces of sheetrock with metal studs every 12 inches. They kicked the wall, but it was too firm to break.
So they cut at the wall with their keys, slowly creating a slot in the plasterboard. Fasullo pressed so hard he rubbed his knuckles raw and bent the key to his Honda. His fingers yesterday were covered with bandages.
"The wall was hard as a rock," he said. It took an hour to cut through the first 1-inch-thick piece.
"We had smoke, we were coughing, our eyes were teary and then the lights went out," he said.
Three of the engineers discovered that the pagers on their belts gave off a small amount of light.
"You put the light right on the wall to see the hole," said Fasullo. "Some of us were holding open the door, some were holding the light to the wall, and some were scraping like hell, coughing. It was really serious. The smoke was so acrid," he said.
"There was a period with the smoke, where we were almost to the point of collapse. My body was shaking. I never experienced this before. I was sitting on the floor for a while and my body was shaking."
Eventually, one of the engineers pried the button panel off the wall. The metal panel proved to be a better tool to cut through the wall than car keys. Soon, they broke into the plenum - the 2-inch-wide space between the interior and exterior walls, separated by the studs.
Fresh air rushed in.
"Oh, the elation," he said. "My knowledge of fires is that the smoke is what kills most people, not the fire. So once we got fresh air, I knew our chance of continuing was much improved."
Still, nobody came to the rescue. So the engineers cut through the last wall, not knowing what floor they were on or what lay ahead. When they heard tiles crashing to the floor, they knew they were at a restroom.
They enlarged the hole and began squeezing themselves into the restroom.
The men walked down 58 flights of stairs to freedom.

Twin Towers Engineered To Withstand Jet Collision

Engineers had to consider every peril they could imagine when they designed the World Trade Center three decades ago because, at the time, the twin towers were of unprecedented size for structures made of steel and glass.
"We looked at every possible thing we could think of that could happen to the buildings, even to the extent of an airplane hitting the side," said John Skilling, head structural engineer. "However, back in those days people didn't think about terrorists very much."
Skilling, based in Seattle, is among the world's top structural engineers. He is responsible for much of Seattle's downtown skyline and for several of the world's tallest structures, including the Trade Center.
Concerned because of a case where an airplane hit the Empire State Building, Skilling's people did an analysis that showed the towers would withstand the impact of a Boeing 707.
"Our analysis indicated the biggest problem would be the fact that all the fuel (from the airplane) would dump into the building. There would be a horrendous fire. A lot of people would be killed," he said. "The building structure would still be there."
Skilling - a recognized expert in tall buildings - doesn't think a single 200-pound car bomb would topple or do major structural damage to a Trade Center tower. The supporting columns are closely spaced and even if several were disabled, the others would carry the load.
"However," he added, "I'm not saying that properly applied explosives - shaped explosives - of that magnitude could not do a tremendous amount of damage."
He took note of the fact that smoke and fire spread throughout the building yesterday. He said that is possibly because the pressurizing system that stops the spread of smoke didn't work when the electric power went off. Skilling, 72, was not involved in the design of the building mechanics.
