To see a meteor streaming across the sky is a rare thing—fast, fleeting, and above all, unexpected. So when dozens of videos, all filmed from behind the windshields of cars, started popping up online last February of a fireball zooming over Russia, the question on the minds of many Americans as they watched the amazing footage was, “How on earth did so many Russians happen to have their cameras on at the exact right moment?”

The answer was simpler, and revealed more about life in Russia, than anyone here could have guessed: The reason there were so many recordings of the meteor was that Russian drivers record everything, all the time, using inexpensive dashboard-mounted cameras. These cameras, Americans quickly came to understand, were not used by Russians out of voyeurism or sentimentality: They were used as protection. Russians, it turns out, live in a state of constant vigilance when they’re driving, prepared at all times for confrontation with their fellow road warriors and corrupt police officers cruising around looking for bribes.

Clinton Denies Story Of Extramarital Affair

CLAREMONT, N.H. - Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton yesterday denied a report by a supermarket tabloid that says he urged an Arkansas woman to deny that they had an affair, and he suggested "she's obviously taking money" for the story.

The Star, a sensationalist weekly, says in its next edition that it possesses telephone tapes of Clinton counseling Gennifer Flowers, a former television reporter, to "say no" to attempts to interview her.

The Democratic presidential contender said he had talked with Flowers to reassure her. She is one of five women publicly accused in unsubstantiated reports of having affairs with Clinton.

Clinton, who is married, said Flowers had originally "hired a lawyer to protect her good name" after stories were published in Arkansas.

In the Star report, circulated yesterday, Flowers is quoted as saying she had an affair with Clinton from 1977 until 1989 and that she secretly tape-recorded several conversations with him.

The Star quotes Flowers as saying, "I'm so tired of all the lying and hiding. For 12 years I was his girlfriend, and now he tells me to deny it - to say it isn't true."

Faced with a barrage of questions by reporters at a campaign stop here yesterday, Clinton said he had read a copy of the story and said, "It isn't true. She's obviously taking money to change her story."

Clinton said he knew nothing about the tapes. He said the woman had been "distraught" and terrified by the accusations that she had an affair with the governor.

MCCOY: Thank you.

EDITH: I thought you might like to see the evening paper.

MCCOY: No, not particularly. You know, I've convinced myself that this is all in a cordrazine hallucination, but I've decided you're not.

EDITH: That's reassuring.

MCCOY: But if you're not, what are you?

EDITH: A friend. When you showed up here, you looked like you could use one.

MCCOY: I don't doubt it. What about this place? Do you run it?

EDITH: I try to.

MCCOY: Why?

EDITH: It's necessary.

MCCOY: Well, it was for me, at least. You may have saved my life.

EDITH: Lots of people drink from the wrong bottle sometimes.

MCCOY: Not as wrong as the bottle I drank from. Allow me to show my gratitude. Perhaps there's something I can do around here to thank you.
