This Is What I Think.

Recently I caught part of the pilot episode of "Wonder Woman" on broadcast television and I haven't looked it up but I think it was the first production starring Lynda Carter and I am pretty sure that's correct. I started watching it after it had already started and I watched it to the end and the part I started watching was the scene with the Marine in dress uniform as she is on stage. The scene is brief but I still love that look "Wonder Woman" gives the Marine, and the other people, after the demonstration.
None of the episode was familiar and if I have ever seen it then I don't recall. I tried finding a reference to the dialog but couldn't find anything for that production. There's some really good stuff in there that would be relevant and compelling to this report. And now that I've read the episode description I understand that is the production I watched part of recently on broadcast television.

Prescription: Murder
Aired Unknown Feb 20, 1968 on NBC
Quotes
Fleming: You never stop, do you?
Columbo: What?
Fleming: The insinuations, the change of pace. You're a bag of tricks, Columbo, right down to that prop cigar you use.
Columbo: Oh, come on, Doc.
Fleming: I'm going to tell you something about yourself. You think you need a psychologist. Maybe you do, maybe you don't, but you are a textbook example of compensation.
Columbo: Oh, what, Doc?
Fleming: Compensation. Adaptability. You're an intelligent man, Columbo, but you hide it. You pretend you're something you're not. Why, because of your appearance you think you can't get by on looks or polish, so you turn a defect into a virtue. You take people by surprise. They underestimate you. And that's where you trip them up.

Navy Rises To Occasion In Duel At Sea
April 19, 1988 By David Evans, Chicago Tribune.
WASHINGTON — For the first time in more than 40 years, enemy warships have seriously challenged the U.S. Navy at sea. The Navy won-decisively.
When the sun set on the Persian Gulf Monday night, at least two Iranian patrol boats were at the bottom, two others were heavily damaged, perhaps even sunk, and two Iranian frigates were disabled.
In one day`s combat, Iranian fleet strength was reduced considerably. The U.S. ships involved in the fighting were unscathed.
By all accounts, the Navy racked up a victory, marred only by the probable loss of an Army attack helicopter. The Cobra helicopter, operating with a two-member crew from the cruiser Wainwright, was reported overdue.
The engagement underscores the decisive impact of air power in naval engagements and the effectiveness of simple countermeasures in dealing with antiship missile attacks.
But the incident that prompted Monday`s naval battle-the near sinking last week of the USS Samuel B. Roberts by an Iranian mine-raises anew the question of the Navy`s ability to deal effectively with even simple mines.
The Navy`s success in surface combat stems in large measure from the presence of aircraft overhead. E-2C Hawkeye radar planes from the carrier Enterprise provided early warning of Iranian F-4 Phantom jets as well as inbound surface vessels.
Attack aircraft known as A-6 also provided early warning of impending attacks. And it was the bombs and missiles fired from the A-6s that inflicted most of the damage. Only two of the Iranian vessels damaged or sunk were hit by ordnance fired from surface warships.
At the same time, the Iranian air force-with barely two dozen or so planes still operational, for want of American spare parts-was able to mount only a token sortie of two F-4s, which were chased off and possibly damaged by U.S. antiaircraft missiles.
Control of the sea would seem to require dominance of the air.
Indeed, the British Royal Navy`s losses in the Falkland Islands war might have been far worse if the Argentine A-4s had not been forced to fly to the very limit of their range, with only enough fuel for one pass, and if more of their bombs had exploded on impact.
However, the Persian Gulf action shows that some of the Navy`s surface ship countermeasures do work. The captain of the frigate USS Stark was roundly criticized for not employing chaff as a radar decoy before his ship was hit by a radar-homing Exocet missile last May.
On Monday, the cruiser Wainwright used its chaff to decoy a Harpoon missile fired from the attacking Joshan, an Iranian fast attack craft.
The Joshan, which did not employ any effective chaff, was then hit and sunk

U.s. Set To Escalate Gulf Action
Reagan: Iran Will `Pay` For Hostilities
April 19, 1988 By George de Lama, Chicago Tribune.
WASHINGTON — U.S. military forces in the Persian Gulf were poised Monday night to escalate warfare with Iran after the Navy unleashed a series of swift and crippling attacks against Iranian oil facilities and warships in the crucial waterway.
President Reagan said the U.S. hoped to avoid further confrontation with Iran, but he warned that the Islamic republic would ``pay the price`` if it continued to threaten American interests in the region.
Late Sunday, he ordered two Iranian oil platforms destroyed in retaliation for what the White House said was a new Iranian mining campaign that damaged a Navy frigate last week.
An uneasy quiet was reported in the gulf Monday night, but administration officials said Defense Department planners had already selected several key Iranian targets for further U.S. attacks if Iran continued hostilities.
The threat of a possible escalation of military action came after a day of American strikes that officials said destroyed the two platforms, sank two patrol boats and severely damaged two frigates and two more patrol boats.
A U.S. Army Cobra helicopter gunship with two crew members was missing after a reconnaissance flight over the gulf, Pentagon officials said, but no American casualties were reported. The number of Iranian casualties was unknown.
On Capitol Hill, congressional leaders of both parties expressed support for Reagan`s decision to order the military action.
``I support the decision to destroy the platforms,`` said Senate Majority Leader Robert Byrd (D., W.V.). ``I think it is a legiti-mate response.``
House Speaker Jim Wright (D., Tex) called the U.S. action ``measured and deliberate retaliation.``
``It behooves all of us to close ranks`` behind the President, Wright said.
The fighting was the most serious military encounter between the two nations since the Navy began escorting Kuwaiti oil tankers through the gulf in July.
The initial American attacks against the oil platforms were followed during the day by ill-fated Iranian attempts to engage U.S. naval vessels and aircraft.
Reagan said he had ordered the U.S. strikes on the platforms as a
``measured response`` to the April 14 mine attack against the guided-missile frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts in international waters of the gulf.
Ten U.S. crew members aboard the frigate were injured by the mine explosion, and four were sent Sunday to U.S. hospitals in West Germany. White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said the U.S. had ``conclusive evidence``
Iran laid the mines.
``We`ve taken this action to make certain the Iranians have no illusions about the cost of irresponsible behavior,`` Reagan said in an address to members of a trade association.
Fighting began around midnight Chicago time when U.S. warships attacked the oil platforms near Sirri and Sassan in the southern gulf, Defense Department officials said.
The two radar-equipped platforms were staffed by Iranian Revolutionary Guards and were used as military ``command and control centers`` for speedboats laying mines in the gulf, according to Defense Secretary Frank Carlucci.
Adm. William Crowe, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the Sassan platform came under attack from the destroyers Merrill and Lynde McCormick and the USS Trenton, a ship carrying helicopters.
``We gave a warning to the platform that we would be destroying it, and asked them to abandon it,`` Crowe said. ``They fired at us.``
Defense Department officials said the fire came from Soviet ZSU-23s, heavy machine guns normally used for antiaircraft defense.
But the Iranians abruptly ceased firing and abandoned the platform, the officials said. A landing party of U.S. marines was put aboard the structure by helicopter and destroyed it with explosives.
A few miles away, the Sirri platform was set ablaze and destroyed by shelling from three U.S. warships, the frigates Simpson and Bailey and the guided-missile cruiser Wainwright.
``They likewise gave a warning,`` Crowe said. ``We could see that a gun was manned on the platform. It did not fire at us. . . . They commenced abandoning. A few people chose not to. We took the platform under fire. They, then, went into the water. We do not know if any of these people were killed or not.``
Around the same time, Carlucci said, the Iranian missile boat Joshan was attacked and sunk after it approached the American naval force ``with hostile intent`` and refused warnings to turn away.

Remarks at the Presentation Ceremony for the All-American Cities Awards
1990-08-06
The President. Thank you very much. Excuse the little delay here. Welcome to the White House. I want to single out an old friend of mine, Henry Cisneros, the chair of the National Civic League. Wayne Hedien of Allstate, Members of Congress who are here, State representatives, mayors and, above all, some friends of the finest cities in America, it's an honor and, indeed, a pleasure to have you here at the White House.
The event is special. It's special because too often it seems the function of the Federal Government is to make laws and set limits. But the cities and citizens we honor today are reminders that America's potential is truly unlimited. The All-American Cities are all-American success stories. At a time when so many mourn what's wrong with American cities, you have quietly gone to work to make them right. You've refused to surrender to crime and to drug dealers and to natural disaster, to despair. You refuse to see the problems of the homeless and the jobless as somehow impossible to solve. Instead, you've set out to unleash the infinitive range of what is possible when Americans really put their minds to it.
Along the way, you've reaffirmed the American ideal of empowerment. Empowerment sounds like a new idea, but it's something President Teddy Roosevelt well understood and wanted to promote when he founded the National Civic League back in 1894. ``There are many different ways,'' he once wrote, ``in which a man or a woman can work for the higher life of American cities.''
Well, the men and women with us are proving Teddy Roosevelt right. So, we've gathered to celebrate the spirit of empowerment and the potential of partnerships perhaps unique in America, the spirit that in an earlier time could have built a meetinghouse or raised a barn on a windswept field.
Today the All-America Cities are forming partnership for challenges of every kind. In small industrial towns, in urban canyons, citizens, businesses, government, and volunteers are joining forces for the future of their communities. In some cases, they've mobilized after an accident, like Flight 232 in Sioux City, Iowa, whose citizens had planned and acted on an outstanding emergency response system. Or, they've responded to a natural disaster the way the people of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, North Carolina, did after Hurricane Hugo.
All Americans are uplifted by stories of courage and compassion that emerged during those difficult times. No hand was idle and, certainly, no heart was untouched. But these cities and others have been just as notable, I think, for their courage and creativity in meeting the longer term challenges.
When the schools of South Gate in Los Angeles faced an enrollment explosion, young kids -- many of them immigrant and at-risk in overcrowded classrooms -- civic volunteers, and local businesses volunteered money and time and talent to turn the tide against drugs and gangs. The kids, 15,000 of them, got involved in marches and posters and essay contests and assemblies and antigang, antidrug pledges. Test scores improved. Attendance went from among the lowest to among the highest in the Los Angeles School District, and the dropout rate is now the lowest in the L.A. Unified School District -- an outstanding case study in how to save our schools.
The same vision for a better future has driven the city of South St. Paul as they deal with the challenges and the change. Rather than mourning the loss of a key industry, citizens began to plan a public walkway and trail system on old industrial land along the river. And volunteers work tirelessly at town meetings to convince their neighbors that urban renewal means an improved city, economic growth, and new jobs. Stock certificates for Mississippi Miles were sold for each, enlisting even the kids. Now the center of South St. Paul is coming back to life. One high school senior even told a local historian, ``I just have to thank you for giving me back my hometown.''
For 41 years the National Civic League has recognized community excellence through these awards. Success stories like these -- as in Bakersfield, California, and Tampa, Florida; Coeur D'Alene, Idaho; Hamlet, North Carolina; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Abilene, Texas -- all are a hopeful reminder that the success of democracy depends on the resilience and capacity of citizens for self-governance, education, civic responsibility, and economic development.
We single out all 10 of these cities not because they claim to be the best cities in America -- I think they're too smart or, in some instances, too modest for that -- but because they represent what's best about American cities. Rather than looking for an outside solution or a quick fix, they're looking within for the answers and they're finding them. By recognizing and unleashing the power and potential of the people themselves, they're proving that big cities can meet enormous challenges, small towns can do very big things.
So, congratulations to all of you. You've earned the admiration of the Nation because when people say, ``It can never be done,'' you're doing it. And when they say, ``You can't get there from here,'' you've proved that you can. So, I'm very grateful, and now if I could ask Henry and Wayne to join me up here, we'd like to present this year's awards. Congratulations to all of you.
Note: The President spoke at 10:15 a.m. in Room 450 of the Old Executive Office Building. In his remarks, he referred to Wayne Hedien, chairman and chief executive officer of Allstate Insurance Co.

Square-Foot Hole Torn in Tail of Crashed Plane by Projectile
July 21, 1989 J. MICHAEL KENNEDY and RICHARD E. MEYER Times Staff Writers
SIOUX CITY, Iowa — A projectile, hurled perhaps by a rear-engine explosion, knocked a hole nearly a foot square all the way through the tail of the United Airlines DC-10 that crashed at Sioux Gateway Airport, killing at least 76 persons, investigators said Thursday.
Hydraulic lines were severed in the tail, and the fluid drained out of all three hydraulic systems on the aircraft, Jim Burnett, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board, told reporters. He said the hydraulic system could not function without the fluid.
The investigators found the rear engine in the wreckage, Burnett said, but its entire fan section and part of its rotor system were missing. He said an explosion that could cause such damage to an engine in flight would be unique.
"This is the first time we've ever seen that," he declared.
In addition to the 76 killed when Flight 232 crashed late Wednesday afternoon en route from Denver to Chicago, rescuers counted 43 persons missing--and 174 survivors.
In Washington, President Bush offered sympathy to victims and their families. He praised the "extraordinary efforts" of those who saved so many lives.
As paramedics searched a cornfield near the airport where much of the wreckage ended up, the living spoke of heroes and miracles. But now the paramedics were hunting for the dead. At nightfall Thursday, they were still removing human remains from the burned-out and mangled tail of the aircraft.
Much of the praise was for Capt. Alfred C. Haynes, a 33-year United veteran, who flew the lumbering jet without full power and without any hydraulics for a desperate 41 minutes while doctors, nurses, policemen and firemen prepared on the ground for a disaster that everyone expected to be far worse.
"Our pilot was a hero," survivor John Transue, 40, told Reuters news service. "He really saved our butts.
"The flames were coming in the airplane while we were skidding," Transue said, clearly in awe. "The whole nose section of the plane just disappeared."
Governor Visits Pilot
Iowa Gov. Terry E. Branstad visited Haynes in the hospital and said the pilot was quite emotional. "Tears came to his eyes when he talked about the number of people who lost their lives," Branstad said. "I told him he did a valiant job."
Other pilots described what Haynes had done.
J. P. Martin, a commercial flier in the Sioux City area who monitored the radio conversation between the cockpit and air traffic controllers, said Haynes or his co-pilot had said: "Nothing really works."
Another commercial pilot, who asked to remain anonymous, said that meant that Haynes could "move the wheel around, but there's nothing there--with no hydraulic power whatsoever, basically all he's got is the engines."
Haynes had "nothing left," a source close to the investigation confirmed. He said the pilot flew the plane by using different power settings on its two remaining engines--one on each wing. By changing and varying engine speeds, this source said, Haynes was able to change the altitude and direction of the aircraft.
Like Rowing a Boat
He "played one of the engines off the other," the source said. He compared it to rowing harder on one oar than on the other to change the direction of a rowboat.
As difficult as that was, Haynes faced even more difficulty when it came time to land the jet, said another DC-10 pilot. Coming in without any hydraulic system whatsoever meant "no slats, no flaps (to slow the plane down)--so he's going like a striped ape. He's got to pull the power off to land, and, the minute he does that, he hasn't got anything to steer the plane with . . . .
"You start losing hydraulic power, you're in a lot of trouble. You haven't got a hell of a lot to fly with."
Other survivors praised the rescuers, who prepared frantically as Haynes kept the stricken jet in the air. The plane carried 11 crew members and 282 passengers, including several infants--but rescuers had no idea at first just how many casualties to expect. They had drilled earlier this year for such a disaster, and the practice paid off.
David J. Greco, the emergency medical director at Marian Health Care Center in Sioux City, activated the disaster plan when the plane was still 32 miles from touchdown.
Hundreds of Rescuers
So swift was the response that hundreds of doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers, policemen, firemen, National Guardsmen and other personnel were at their stations at the Sioux City airport or in local hospitals several minutes before the jet finally crashed.
When the plane hit, it littered the ground with thousands of chunks of debris only inches in size, Greco said. Bodies were strapped three abreast in attached seats that were thrown clear of the fuselage and had rolled down a runway. "They looked like they had been rolling for up to a half mile at high speeds," he said.

'God Opened a Hole' After Jet Landed Upside Down
July 20, 1989 PENELOPE McMILLAN and J. MICHAEL KENNEDY Times Staff Writers
SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Jerry Schemmel had escaped the burning United Airlines DC-10 after it crashed here Wednesday and found safety in a cornfield. But he heard the cries of a baby coming from the smoking wreckage and he plunged back into the airplane.
"I found her--a baby girl--in an overhead compartment, beneath a bunch of stuff, and pulled her out," Schemmel, 29, said after he had been examined and released from a Sioux City hospital. "By that time it (the plane) was filled with smoke and I just ran with her. I ran down one of the corn rows."
Another survivor, Charles Martz, described how he staggered from the plane into a cornfield that had been transformed into a nightmare.
"Bodies were strewn all over the place," Martz said. "Bodies had burns, their clothing burned off, stripped off."
Similar tales of heroism and horror were told by survivors who were on Flight 232, bound from Denver to Chicago, when it crashed, broke up and erupted in flames as it attempted an emergency landing in Iowa.
"The plane came down. It bounced twice, flipped into the air and we were sitting there upside down and it began to fill up with smoke," said Cliff Marshall, who was returning home to Columbus, Ohio.
"Then God opened a hole in the basement (the bottom of the plane) and I pushed a little girl out. I grabbed another, kept pulling them out until they didn't come no more."
Half or more of the 293 passengers and crew members on the airplane survived and many of them walked away from the flaming remains of the wide-bodied jet.
C.O. Miller, a former chief investigator for the National Safety Transportation Board, called the survival rate remarkable. James Hamilton, an official at a local hospital, said it was amazing that people walked away from the wreckage unscathed.
The early-afternoon flight was about halfway from Denver to Chicago when the passengers heard what several described as a big jolt or bump followed by a bang. The sound of the three-engine plane changed.
"The pilot got on the speaker system and said that one of the engines had blown, that there was nothing to worry about, that there were two other engines, that we wouldn't have any problem," said Schemmel, deputy commissioner of the Continental Basketball Assn., who was on his way to Columbus, Ohio, with another league official.
Damages Tail
A few minutes later the captain told the passengers that the engine explosion had damaged the tail of the aircraft and that they would have to land in Sioux City, a city of about 80,000 in northwestern Iowa.
The pilot told the passengers that the landing probably would be a little rough because he did not have a lot of control over the aircraft.
The passengers were not told that pieces of the engine apparently had severed the hydraulic controls, leaving the pilot almost completely unable to maneuver the huge jet. The pilot reported by radio to air traffic controllers that he had sustained a complete hydraulic failure.
The plane descended gradually to about 11,000 feet and began to circle the Sioux City airport while emergency crews were assembled on the ground.
Aboard the aircraft, there was no panic. The flight attendants told the passengers how to prepare for an emergency landing by putting their heads between their legs. The crew described how to evacuate the plane from all available exits. The in-flight movie continued to play on the screens in the cabin.
"I was not aware of the danger," Schemmel said. "I don't know much about flying, but I certainly heard a lot of stories about one engine quitting and there being no problem. So I wasn't worried about it."
Struggle to Cope
The plane kept dipping, pitching and circling in one direction as the pilot and co-pilot struggled to cope with the hydraulic failure.
"For 35 minutes, we knew something was wrong and for 10 or 15 minutes we knew something was dramatically wrong," said Brad Bayless of Highlands, Colo., as he stood in the lobby of the airport terminal after the crash.
David Lansberger told a television interviewer: "Everybody was pretty calm. We really thought we were going to land and walk off. They said it was going to be a real hard landing. I didn't think it was going to be this hard."
Martz, 58, is a former Navy pilot who still flies for his personal business. In a telephone call to his wife in Castle Rock, Colo., he praised the pilot's ability in bringing the crippled plane so close to the ground.
He said that his experience as a pilot told him that the problems were probably far more serious than the pilot was telling the passengers as the plane circled the airport.
"I could tell it was worse than that," he said.
About 40 minutes after the engine explosion, the pilot told passengers to get in position for the landing. He said that the plane would touch down in about 30 seconds.
Three or four minutes later, as the plane aimed for a 9,000-foot runway at the airport and emergency crews watched in horror, the right wing dipped into the ground.

"We did somersaults," recalled Bayless, who was seated directly next to the right wing.
Another passenger seated near the front of the aircraft told a local radio station: "When we hit, the plane broke right in front of me. It rolled over twice, I think, then it burst into flames. I grabbed an old lady in front of me and a baby and I went out of the plane."
Schemmel was seated on the aisle in row 26. Next to him was Jay Ramsdell, the commissioner of the basketball league.
"The section we were in rolled over at least twice," said Schemmel. "It might have been more than that. It happened so fast I don't remember.
"After we first hit, we stopped in a very short time. It seemed like seconds. I was expecting to be sliding for a long time, but we stopped suddenly because we were in a cornfield.
"When we came to a stop, I was upside down in my seat. I unbuckled my seat belt and fell to what would be the roof, because we were turned over. I found out that I was fine and I started helping other people. I looked to my right, there were flames coming out of the wall."
Several passengers described the first frantic seconds after the plane came to a halt. Some rushed for the openings and others fought to rescue as many people as they could.
Lansberger said the calm before the crash turned into pandemonium, with noise and screams everywhere.
"I just remember thinking, 'This is what it is like to die,' " he told CNN television.
"We tried to get as many people out before the fire hit," said Bayless in the airport lobby, massaging a bump on his head. "I saw fire out of my window right away."
Rod Vettor echoed Bayless, saying: "We ended up upside down in a cornfield with fire. We did everything we could to get people out of the airplane."
Lori and Mark Michaelson were traveling with their infant daughter and 6-year-old son in Row 11. They unbuckled their seat belts and, in the confusion and smoke and fire, they left the plane without the baby.
"I went back in the plane to find my daughter," Mark Michaelson told a TV interviewer. "I couldn't see her because it was dark. I heard her cry. I knew it was her cry but I couldn't hear it again. Others were coming out. I was walking forward shouting: 'I'm looking for my baby.' At that point the smoke got worse."
He left the plane, searching for the rest of his family.
Grabs Young Boy
Ron Rhode of Columbus, Ohio, was riding next to an 8-year-old boy from Prairie View, Ill. He grabbed the child and held him tight as the plane bounced and flipped over on the ground.
"The plane hit, bounced and we ended up upside down," said Rhode. "I let him go."
The boy, Ben Radtke, was unharmed. He was still wearing the red-and-white badge that United gives to minors traveling alone.
Schemmel lives in Denver, but he is a native of Sioux Falls. He worked for a time as a basketball broadcaster before joining the Continental Basketball Assn.
"He is so calm," said his wife, Diane, in a telephone interview from their home. "He is just a really mellow person."
As the plane filled with smoke, Schemmel tried in vain to put out part of the fire in his broken section with a blanket and then saw sunlight through the darkening cabin.
"There was an opening," he recalled. "Everybody was heading for the back of the plane where the opening was. So I helped some people out for as long as I could, when the flames just got too heavy and I had to get out. It was chaos.
"I got outside the plane. It was right in the cornfield. I had gotten a few feet out and heard a baby crying, and so I went back in," he said.
Inside the plane, wedged in an overhead bin, he found the infant girl and carried her out of the plane.
"I ran down one of the corn rows," he said. "The corn stalks were about seven feet tall and I couldn't really see anything. I got to a little bit of a clearing and I handed the baby to a lady who looked like she was all right. She took the baby and took off toward the road."
Outside the plane, Michaelson spotted a woman carrying his baby daughter. He ran up to her and she said that a man had just handed her the child. He said he didn't know who brought his baby off the plane.
"Just some hero," he said.

U.s. Strikes Iranian Targets
Navy Blasts 3 Warships, Oil Platform
April 19, 1988 By George de Lama and Nicholas M. Horrock, Chicago Tribune.
WASHINGTON — U.S. naval forces destroyed two oil platforms in the Persian Gulf, sank a missile boat and severely damaged two Iranian frigates in a series of engagements begun early Monday in retaliation for the Iranian mining of international waters, administration officials said.
The attacks, carried out by destroyers, frigates, planes from the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise and a Marine Corps landing team, were ordered by President Reagan late Sunday after he consulted with congressional leaders. The Soviet Union and other nations with ships in the gulf also were advised before the action.
No American casualties were reported, Defense Secretary Frank Carlucci said. Iranian casualties were not known.
Reagan warned Iran later Monday not to continue to threaten U.S. interests in the region.
``They must know that we will protect our ships, and if they threaten us, they will pay a price,`` Reagan said in brief remarks before giving a speech to a national building contractors` organization.
``We undertook this action to make sure the Iranians have no illusions about the cost of irresponsible behavior,`` the President said.
The U.S. attacks began with the shelling of the oil platforms Sirri and Sassan, in southern gulf waters, about midnight Chicago time and continued for nearly eight hours, according to administration officials. They said the two platforms were manned by Iranian Revolutionary Guards and were used as radar- equipped military command and control centers.
``At the time of the engagement, an Iranian missile boat approached our ships with obvious hostile intent,`` Carlucci said. ``It was warned off, neglected the warnings, . . . (was) engaged by U.S. ships and has been sunk.`` Later, Defense Department officials said, the Iranian frigate Sahand fired on a patrol of A-6 fighter bombers from the USS Enterprise. The 310-foot Iranian frigate was then attacked by Harpoon missiles, laser-guided bombs and a missile from the USS Strauss, a destroyer.
The attack left the Sahand severely damaged, the officials said, and film released by the Defense Department showed the ship aflame, disgorging plumes of thick black smoke and listing in the water.
A little more than an hour later, the Iranian frigate Sabalan came under attack when it fired on U.S. aircraft.
``The aircraft returned fire and hit the Sabalan with a single laser-guided bomb,`` an official at the Pentagon said. ``As darkness fell, the Sabalan was down by the stern with tugs fore and aft. We do not intend to renew attacks on the Sabalan unless she exhibits further hostile intent.``
The first attack was announced at the White House at 2:30 a.m. to reporters summoned from their homes for the unexpected press briefing.
``Acting under his authority as commander in chief,`` White House spokesman Marlin Fitwater said in a statement, Reagan ordered the attacks ``in response to Iran`s recent resumption of mine-laying in international waters and its mine attack on the USS Samuel B. Roberts.``
``The government of Iran has been repeatedly warned about these hostile acts,`` Fitzwater said.
The Roberts, a guided missile frigate, struck a mine in the Persian Gulf last Thursday. Ten U.S. seamen were injured in the blast, and four were sent Sunday to U.S. hospitals in West Germany. Fitzwater said the U.S. has
``conclusive evidence`` that Iran laid the mines.
``The U.S. Navy has identified, photographed and exploded additional mines in the same area as the one which damaged the Roberts,`` he said.
Beginning late Friday, Fitzwater said, the President met with his advisers to examine the options for ``taking action against Iran for this new laying of mines.`` Reagan made the final decision to go ahead Sunday evening after meeting with the advisers and briefing congressional leaders.
Senate Majority Leader Robert Byrd, a West Virginia Democrat, Minority Leader Bob Dole of Kansas, House Speaker Jim Wright of Texas, House Majority Leader Thomas Foley of Washington and House Minority Leader Bob Michel of Illinois were at the meeting.
According to Adm. William Crowe, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Sassan platform was the first to come under attack by the destroyers Merrill and Lynde McCormick and the USS Trenton, a landing platform ship carrying helicopters.
``We gave a warning to the platform that we would be destroying it, and asked them to abandon. They fired at us,`` Crowe said.
Defense Department officials said the fire came from Soviet ZSU-23s, heavy machine guns usually used for antiaircraft defense.
But then the Iranians abruptly ceased firing and abandoned the platform, they said. Marines were put aboard by helicopter and destroyed the platform with explosives, the officials said.
The Sirri platform, several miles away, also came under attack by three U.S. ships, the frigates Simpson and Bagley and the guided-missile cruiser Wainwright.

U.s. Strikes Iranian Targets
Navy Blasts 3 Warships, Oil Platform

``They likewise gave a warning,`` Crowe said. ``We could see that a gun was manned on the platform. It did not fire at us. . . . They commenced abandoning. A few people chose not to. We took the platform under fire. They then went into the water. We do not know if any of these people were killed or not.``
He said the Sirri was destroyed by the shelling of 5-inch guns, which caused a major fire.
It was at the Sirri location, Pentagon officials said, that the U.S. vessels first came under attack. They said the Iranian missile boat Joshan, a 10-year-old, 154-foot high-speed patrol craft, ignored warnings from U.S. ships and ``fired at us.``
``The Simpson fired three standard missiles, two of which hit the PTG
(the Joshan). The Wainwright fired one, which hit the PTG,`` Crowe said. Minutes later the Joshan sank.

THE FATE OF FRANCIS GARY POWERS
Downed U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers underwent extensive interrogation at the hands of the Soviets. His instructions from the CIA on what to do in event of capture were meager, and he had been told that he might as well tell the Soviets whatever they wanted to know because they could get the information from his aircraft anyway Nevertheless, Powers tried to conceal as much classified information as possible while giving the appearance of cooperating with his captors. To extract the maximum propaganda value from the U-2 Affair, the Soviets prepared an elaborate show trial for Powers, which began on 17 August 1960 Powers continued to conceal as much information as possible

Aage Bohr
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Aage Niels Bohr (19 June 1922 – 9 September 2009) was a Danish nuclear physicist and Nobel laureate, and the son of the famous physicist and Nobel laureate Niels Bohr.
Life and career
Bohr was born in Copenhagen in 1922, and grew up surrounded by physicists such as Wolfgang Pauli and Werner Heisenberg, who were working with his father at the Institute for Theoretical Physics (now the Niels Bohr Institute)
Physics
By the late 1940s it was known that the properties of atomic nucleus could not be explained by the then-current models (such as the liquid drop model developed by Niels Bohr amongst others). The shell model, developed in 1949, allowed some additional features to be explained, in particular the so-called magic numbers. However, there were also properties which could not be explained, including the non-spherical distribution of charge in certain nuclei.
James Rainwater of Columbia University suggested a model of the nucleus which could explain a non-spherical charge distribution in a 1950 paper. Bohr, visiting Columbia at the time, had independently conceived the same idea, and submitted a paper for publication about a month after Rainwater's which discussed the same problem along more general lines. Bohr later developed the idea further, in 1951 publishing a paper which comprehensively treated the relationship between oscillations of the surface of the nucleus and the movement of the individual nucleons.
On his return to Copenhagen in 1950, Bohr began working with Ben Roy Mottelson to compare the theoretical work with experimental data. In three papers which were published in 1952–53, Bohr and Mottelson demonstrated close agreement between theory and experiment; for example, showing that the energy levels of certain nuclei could be described by a rotation spectrum. This work stimulated new theoretical and experimental studies. As a result, he won the Atoms for Peace Award in 1969.
Bohr, Mottelson and Rainwater were jointly awarded the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physics "for the discovery of the connection between collective motion and particle motion in atomic nuclei and the development of the theory of the structure of the atomic nucleus based on this connection".

The Able Archer 83 Sourcebook
Posted - November 7, 2013
Washington, D.C., November 7, 2013 – Today marks the 30th anniversary of the beginning of Able Archer 83, a NATO exercise that utilized "new nuclear weapons release procedures" to simulate the transition from conventional to nuclear war with the Soviet Union. Although US officials saw Able Archer 83 as a routine exercise, it resulted in an "unprecedented Soviet reaction" which US intelligence eventually inferred "was an expression of a genuine belief on the part of Soviet leaders that US was planning a nuclear first strike," according to the largest collection of declassified documents on the 1983 War Scare compiled and posted by the National Security Archive, www.nsarchive.org.
The climax of Able Archer 83 was on November 9, 1983 when NATO war gamers at Supreme Headquarters Allied Power Europe (SHAPE) realized they could not halt a simulated Soviet conventional advance and requested "initial limited use of nuclear weapons against pre-selected fixed targets." This limited strike was not enough, and on the morning of November 11, a "follow-on use of nuclear weapons was executed."
While NATO was practicing a drawn-out transition from conventional to nuclear war, Soviet leadership feared a decapitating first strike. The imminent European deployment of western Pershing II and cruise missiles which could reach the Soviet Union in ten minutes led Soviet General Secretary Yuri Andropov to warn in June of 1983 of the "the dangerous 'red line'" of nuclear war through "miscalculation" four times during his "first real meeting" with an envoy from the Reagan administration. A KGB report from May of 1982 describes the creation of the largest peace-time human intelligence gathering operation in history, Operation RYaN, in an attempt to "prevent the possible sudden outbreak of war by the enemy."
The American intelligence community did not initially perceive the risk of nuclear miscalculation that Able Archer 83 involved. Only "in response to British concerns" were intelligence reports drafted on the War Scare, the most ominous of which — from CIA Director William Casey to President Ronald Reagan and other cabinet officials — warned of "a dimension of genuineness" and "high military costs" to the Soviet actions. A summary of a still-classified retrospective 1991 intelligence report showed an "ominous list of indicators" pointing toward genuine Soviet fear of a Western first strike," which caused the Soviet military to ready its forces for a preemptive strike on the West. "If so," the report understated, "war scare a cause for concern."
Despite the dangerous ramifications of this possible nuclear miscalculation, the history of the Able Archer 83 war scare has remained largely unavailable to the public. This dearth of primary sources has even led critics — with some justification — to describe the study of the war scare as "an echo chamber of inadequate research and misguided analysis" and "circle reference dependency," with an overreliance upon "the same scanty evidence."

Is george bush gay
Other Answers
George W Bush is gay.
He had male prostitute James Guckert visit the White House over 200 times while president between 2003 and 2005.
Bush had a number of bisexual relations with Victor Ashe in 1984 and subsequently made Ashe ambassador to Poland.
Bush's alleged homosexuality in college was hinted at in Kitty Kelley's massive biography of the Bush family, The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty, which was released at about the same time as CBS 60 Minutes was investigating Bush's National Guard stint. In the case of Kelley's book and the gay charge, the criticism came not from the GOP operatives but from their allies in the corporate media, including the Washington Post's Howard Kurtz, who is married to a GOP operative. While Bush attended all-boys Andover prep school (nicknamed "bend over"), Bush, not able to make it as an athlete, instead became a male cheerleader. At Yale, Bush, according to Kelley, had a "special relationship" (i.e., gay relationship) with Victor Ashe, his room mate and fellow cheerleader. Ashe, a former Mayor of Knoxville, is now Bush's ambassador to Poland. At the Delta Kappa Epsilon frat house, Bush became known as "a jock sniffer."

A swarm of new media stories on young George W. Bush's dereliction of duty pops his heroic-leadership bubble.
BY ERIC BOEHLERT
TOPICS: GEORGE W. BUSH, TEXAS, NEWS
On Feb. 13, as controversy swirled around President Bush’s service in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War, the White House released more than 400 pages of documents on the press corps, proving, it claimed, that Bush had served honorably and fulfilled his commitment. The sudden rush of records, often redundant, jumbled and out of chronological order, generally left reporters baffled. From Bush’s point of view, the document dump was a political success, as the controversy cooled and the paper trail ran dry.
In retrospect, it’s doubtful that even White House aides understood all the information embedded in the records, specifically the payroll documents. It’s also unlikely they realized how damaging the information could be when read in the proper context. Seven months later, the document dump is coming back to haunt the White House, thanks to researcher Paul Lukasiak, who has spent that time closely examining the paperwork, and more important, analyzing U.S. statutory law, Department of Defense regulations, and Air Force policies and procedures of the 1960s and 1970s. As a result, Lukasiak arrived at the overwhelming conclusion that not only did Bush walk away from his final two years of military obligation, coming dangerously close to desertion, but he attempted to cover up his absenteeism through swindle and fraud.
Lukasiak’s findings, detailed on his Web site the AWOL Project, have since been bolstered and augmented by independent research by the Boston Globe and the Associated Press. On Wednesday, CBS News reported what may be among the most damaging details yet: that Bush’s squadron commander, the late Col. Jerry Killian, complained he was being pressured by higher-ups to give Bush a favorable evaluation after he suspended him from flying for failure to take his annual physical exam. Titled “CYA,” Killian’s memo concluded, “I’m having trouble running interference and doing my job.”

Cuomo: Find out who did it and punish them/Officials agree bomb likely caused Trade Center explosion

HOUSTON CHRONICLE
NEW YORK -- Investigators of the massive blast at the World Trade Center were stymied Saturday by the severity of the damage as the city awakened to an emotional and economic aftershock.
New York City Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said it may be days before investigators can sift through the rubble at the epicenter of Friday's explosion, which killed five and injured more than 1,000 at the soaring business and trade center in lower Manhattan.
Forensic investigators were barred by engineers from entering the area until sections of the underground parking garage where the blast originated could be shored up.
But even in the absence of forensic reports, police and other officials agreed that a massive bomb or bombs probably caused the violent explosion. Three levels of the parking garage were devastated.
"There is a great crater in there, and it is difficult to imagine what else could have caused it," said New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, who toured the site Saturday morning.
"If it looks like a bomb and smells like a bomb, then it's probably a bomb. . . . The answer is to find out who did it, apprehend the people who did it and punish them."

The Douglas DC-3
The Douglas DC-3 was one of the most noteworthy aircraft ever built. It probably did more than any other plane to introduce a whole new segment of the population to air travel and establish air transportation as a normal way of traveling. More than five times as many passenger miles were flown in 1941 than in 1935 in the United States, and much of that can be attributed to the popularity of the DC-3. Douglas also produced a number of military versions that played a vital role around the world, especially in World War II.
The DC-3 was the first airliner to make a profit by carrying just passengers without the support of mail contracts or other forms of government subsidies. Its production, along with continued production of the DC-2 that lasted until September 1939 for the military version, ensured the prosperity and financial soundness of Douglas Aircraft for many years.
This new plane would appear in two versions: a 14-berth sleeper version, the Douglas Sleeper Transport (DST), and a day version, called the DC-3.
Construction began in December 1934, before a firm contract had even been written. On July 8, 1935, American's president confirmed the initial order of 10 Douglas Sleeper Transports at a cost of $79,500 each. The first DST debuted on December 17, 1935

The Douglas DC-3, N34 is representative of an aircraft type that revolutionized the commercial airline industry and made a significant contribution to the evolution of military aviation during World War II. Responding to reports Thursday
Bush repeatedly questioned the timing of the Maine news reports. "I think that's an interesting question," he told reporters. "Why now? . . . I've got my suspicions."
Before Bush spoke, communications director Karen Hughes addressed the matter standing on the tarmac of Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. Speaking to about 100 reporters, she offered the following account:
She said Bush had several beers on Sept. 4, 1976, when he was stopped by police in Kennebunkport.

Sheffield Blitz: 70 years on from the devastating bombs
By December 1940, Britain had been at war with Germany for more than a year.
The country had seen the defeat of the British Expeditionary Force and its evacuation at Dunkirk.
But Germany's planned invasion, codenamed Operation Sealion, had been thwarted by the hard-fought victory of the RAF in the Battle of Britain.
Hitler then changed tactics and ordered a series of bombing raids on major British cities, in what would become known as the Blitz.
The Blitz (from Blitzkrieg meaning lightning war) began in London in September 1940. Coventry and Birmingham were hit in November.
In December it was Sheffield's turn.
The air raid sirens sounded just after 1900 on 12 December.
The first wave of bombs fell on Norton and Gleadless, heralding the hundreds of further explosives and incendiaries that would fall on the city.
It is thought the bombers lost their way and ended up pounding the city centre instead of the industrial area of Attercliffe.
More than 70 people were killed when the Marples Hotel on High Street sustained a direct hit. It was the biggest single loss of life in the city in the Blitz.

1982: Argentines destroy HMS Sheffield
The British ship HMS Sheffield has been hit by an Argentine missile fired from a fighter bomber.
It is not clear how many of the 268 crew have perished.
The sinking has shocked the British nation and foiled any possible diplomatic solution to the current dispute over the Falkland Islands between Britain and Argentina.
The ship caught fire when a French-made Exocet missile penetrated deep into HMS Sheffield's control room. The blaze caused a poisonous smoke and most of the crew abandoned ship.
A major rescue operation has been launched in the South Atlantic as relatives thousands of miles back in the UK wait for news of their loved ones.
The 4,100-ton destroyer was struck as it carried out a scouting mission off the Falkland Islands, although its exact position is a secret.
Announcing the news on television, the spokesman for the Ministry of Defence Secretary, Ian McDonald, said the ship was "in the course of its duty within the total exclusion zone around the Falkland Isles".
Two missiles were fired by a Super-Etendard fighter bomber. One missed but the other scored a direct hit and ignited a fire.
The Exocet missile is designed to skim the sea to avoid radar detection. It has its own radar that guides it to its intended target.
The attack follows yesterday's sinking of the Argentine cruiser General Belgrano. An Argentine diplomat in the United States said the destruction of HMS Sheffield was "justified after the massacre that the English have done shelling our men and our ships".
In Context
Twenty men died and a further 24 were injured in the sinking of the HMS Sheffield, the first British warship to be lost in 37 years.
It was the first of four Royal Navy ships sunk during the Falklands War. The others were the frigates Ardent and Antelope and the destroyer Coventry.
The Royal Fleet Auxillary vessel Sir Galahad and the British Merchant Navy ship Atlantic Conveyor were also lost.
After a bloody land battle, Argentine forces surrendered to the British and peace was declared on 20 June.

Plot Summary
It concerns a pacifist husband who is so involved in his "causes" he totally neglects his wife and two sons. The wife, ready to leave her husband, finds the schoolmaster knocking on their door informing them their boys are going to be expelled for fighting, which he finds ironic in as much as the father is a known pacifist. When they get to the school their sons have disappeared.

Plot Summary
Tom and Carol Anne Smithson move to the tiny town of Grand, Pennsylvania, where Tom has gotten a job at the Weldon Piano Works. Tom is soon fired, however, after his "innovative idea for the future of the company" (making golf clubs at the piano factory) is panned by Mr. Weldon. Mr. Weldon takes a liking to Carol Anne, however, and hires her. Over the course of the series, Carol Anne meets and befriends the working class Janice Pasetti. The goings on of the small town are covered in humorous and often touching detail.

Homer: Wake up, honey. It's time to harvest our radioactive supercrops.
Marge: But it's only been one night.
Homer: That's all it takes. If we learned one thing from "The Amazing Colossal Man" and "Grasshopperus," it's that radiation makes stuff grow real big, real fast.
Marge: But didn't Grasshopperus kill Chad Everett?
Homer: Only because he tried to reason with him.
Marge: Oh.

Patrick Stewart and the Sheffield are both from Yorkshire. Not sure offhand what Yorkshire, represents, something like one of our states or maybe a county?
They call it a county but it looks as large as a state.
Anyway, I was thinking about this concept, if it is true that I was on the Sheffield when it was hit, as I was watching some news article about one of the princes from England completing military training. How does a person, either a king or a president, send their legacy into the world without making them, and everyone around them, a special target?

If it's true that I once had a relationship with Julia Roberts, I don't think the April 14, 1988, incident is a coincidence either. I assume I was in the Arabian gulf at the time. They probably positioned a mine layer a few miles ahead of the Roberts and dropped mines in its path. Or they were able to predict the Roberts course and dropped mines off along that course well in advance. I wonder who got the serial numbers off the mines. Maybe the Stark was a replay of the Sheffield. If I could just remember.

I wonder if there is any significance, relevant to me, about Porter Goss resigning on May 5th. 5/5/82 is the date I was writing of being the possible date that the crew and I of the Sheffield were rescued, if that even happened to me.

“Gladiator” was released, according to this article, on May 5th. That is the date I have started to associate with as having been rescued along with the crew of the Sheffield. It must mean more than I can actually remember. I’m not entirely sure why they chose 5/5 though. I am thinking that period of 1986 to 1987 in Africa is closer to the movie, if any of that really happened at all. Maybe it has something to do with being because the Sheffield happened just after my USNA graduation.

It is very interesting to consider this movie now with all new perceptions considered. I saw it just after I quit Microsoft and I was still living in Redmond. I wondered about it several times, as to the relevance of Russell Crowe’s character to my own life.

It is interesting that he gave the commencement speech at his alma mater the same year I am thinking I graduated from USNA with the Class of 1982. I am also thinking this would a few days after I survived the strike on the Sheffield.

The town of Sheffield is only about 28 miles by road from the town of Mirfield in England, using the ‘shortest distance’ option, which is almost a straight line. The HMS Sheffield was named after that town.

That battle I have written about on the Wainwright, where the Iranian ship fires the Harpoon at us must be the representation of the Sheffield getting hit.

These missiles quickly dropped to between six and eight feet from the sea and travelled at close to the speed of sound through rough waves, following a course programmed in by the pilots. 10km from the target the missile's own radar system picked out the target and homed in.
One history of the Falklands war says that as there were no "bogeys" on any radar screens at the time, the officers were making a satellite phone call back to Fleet HQ in England, an action that would jam the use of the ship radar. However, with other ships close by, notably the Carrier Invincible, this was not seen to be a risk. At the end of the call, reported the Guardian newspaper, the radar came back on and the two Etenards were spotted just 33km away. It was the Navy's first encounter with low-flying Exocet-carrying attack planes.

In my memory, I remember smoking cigarettes for a time. I wonder if that is actually representative of lung damage from the fire on the Sheffield. Instead of actually smoking cigarettes for over 10 years, I inhaled toxic fumes from a fire that had the instant impact on my lungs that was the equivalent of smoking cigarettes for about 10 years.

I lived very close to Clemson University and traveled into Clemson often to service the bank branches in that town. I have been trying to think of why that was and I guess it could be because of the Tigers. I suspect though that the primary reason for me being there was because I lived in Central. After that, I bought that house in Greer, SC, at Country Club Estates and moved out there until I moved to Arrowood in Charlotte, NC. From there I went across town to Dresden off Independence with the nearby Sheffield Park, and then I moved back near Arrowood to Whitehall.
