Jimmy Carter

XXXIX President of the United States: 1977 - 1981

Spokane, Washington Remarks at Dedication Ceremonies for Riverfront Park.

May 5, 1978

I wondered then about the background of Spokane and the future of this lovely site, once the excitement of Expo '74 was past. I flew in on a plane traveling tourist class, which was my custom then because of necessity, and I saw the beauty of your land. And today when I came on Air Force One, I had the same opportunity.

CONTROL ROOM. Doctor Weir is watching all the activity down in the Gateroom as Daniel walks in explaining something to a female scientist.

JACKSON: Each chevron tells our Gate to look for a point of space outside our galaxy, so we won't know until it locks.

(O'Neill walks in and goes over to Weir. He claps his hands together.)

O'NEILL: We there yet?

WEIR: Just waiting on Doctor McKay.

In another room, Technical Sergeant Siler is putting the finishing touches to a device that he has cobbled together to connect the Zero Point Module to the Gate system.

SILER: Should work now. (He stands up and walks over to a panel on the wall.)

McKAY: OK, Sergeant, give it a try. The ZedP.M. should light up when it senses the conductive connection to the Gate.

(He inserts the ZPM into the device, then points to Siler. Siler throws a switch and the ZPM lights up. McKay smiles in delight.)

McKAY: Oh yeah!

CORRIDOR. Major Sheppard, geared up and wearing a large backpack and carrying a P-90 rifle, walks into the Gateroom. He seems Colonel Sumner inside.

SHEPPARD: Colonel.

(He walks past him, looking around the Gateroom. Sumner looks at him, apparently not pleased that he is there. Just then, Weir walks into the Gateroom.)

WEIR (calling out): Could I have everyone's attention please? (Wearing a small backpack, she walks up the ramp and turns to face everyone as they gather round.)

(In the Control Room, Daniel stands up and walks over to stand next to O'Neill. They both look down into the Gateroom as Weir addresses the expedition members.)

WEIR: Alright, here we go. We are about to try to make a connection. We have been unable to predict exactly how much power this is gonna take and we may only get the one chance at this, so if we are able to achieve a stable wormhole, we're not gonna risk shutting the Gate down. We'll send in the M.A.L.P robot probe, check for viability and go. Everything in one shot.

Riverfront Park

Riverfront Rotary Fountain

The Riverfront Park Rotary Fountain is located on Howard Street at the South entrance to Riverfront Park. It is a popular attraction for beating the Summer heat. Kids love it!

Dedicated on September 1, 2005 to “the people of Spokane” and under the care of the Spokane Parks Department, the fountain is destined to be a popular attraction for many years to come. The Downtown Spokane Rotary Club 21 and the Spokane Parks Department worked together to make the fountain a reality. Financial support was also provided by numerous donors whose names appear around the fountain. Harold Balazs is the artist.

The fountain has five stainless steel columns that are 24 feet tall. These support a 30 foot diameter ring containing 40 overhead jets. The jets spray towards the middle of the fountain producing a dome of water and a waterfall in the fountain's center. Eight geysers shoot water upwards. The fountain also has dozens of mist jets, and the five boulders have jets that spray sideways. To conserve water, the fountain water is filtered and recirculated.

You can catch the fountain in action from Spring to Fall, 6 a.m. to midnight.

Crossroads

I have been undecided about describing my situation in a blog. Nothing else is working though, so I might as well.

I choose to title my blog Homeless Veteran of Microsoft because my journey into this world of hurt began there, at Microsoft. I suspect most of you reading this already know the story. Maybe you don't, maybe you would lie to me rather than admit you do. Either way, I only need one of you to tell the truth. At this point, I just need one person to step forward and serve as a witness.

I need someone to admit they have been spying on me all these years. Either by spying on me directly, or by receiving the information about me the spies have been disclosing.

I am not sure if this first post will actually be my last. I am comtemplating bailing out of this homeless shelter and going back to the streets, sleeping in the tall grass at night. I hate it here. All these years of having people spy on me every minute of the day just makes me feel claustrophobic in enclosed places like this. At least being homeless on the streets I have some semblance of freedom. When you lose every shred of your private life, any freedom you can find is very valuable. But I may stay around here a couple more days, hopefully tomorrow will be the day someone finally acknowledges that they have been hijacking my private life. Maybe tomorrow.

And if you think this is all funny and you enjoy seeing other people suffer, then the hell with you. If the truth be told, I sort of envy you. Life must be very uncomplicated for people like you and all the others that are spying on me. Life is uncomplicated for people with the empathy of a sociopath.

On the road again

Well, they are kicking me out this place in a couple weeks so I guess that settles that. Something about me not having the kind of problems a typical resident would have and I have to have the kind of problems they know how to find solutions for.

Maybe tomorrow is the day I get some answers. I still can't understand why no one has responded to me. I always tell people what I know and what I don't know when they ask me a question. With all the weird stuff going on around me these past few years, I can only conclude that they will not respond because they have something to hide.

fSHEPPARD: So some people have the same genes as these Ancients. (He walks around the Chair.)

BECKETT: The specific gene is very rare, but on the whole they look very much like we do. In fact they were first. We're the second evolution of this form, the Ancients having explored this galaxy for millions of years before ... Major, please don't.

The American Presidency Project

Dwight D. Eisenhower

XXXIV President of the United States: 1953-1961

38 - Remarks Recorded for the "Back-to-God" Program of the American Legion.

February 20, 1955

THE FOUNDING FATHERS expressed in words for all to read the ideal of Government based upon the dignity of the individual. That ideal previously had existed only in the hearts and minds of men. They produced the timeless documents upon which the Nation is rounded and has grown great. They, recognizing God as the author of individual fights, declared that the purpose of Government is to secure those rights.

To you and to me this ideal of Government is a self-evident truth. But in many lands the State claims to be the author of human rights. The tragedy of that claim runs through all history and, indeed, dominates our own times. If the State gives rights, it can--and inevitably will--take away those rights.

Without God, there could be no American form of Government, nor an American way of life. Recognition of the Supreme Being is the first--the most basic--expression of Americanism. Thus the Founding Fathers saw it, and thus, with God's help, it will continue to be.

It is significant, I believe, that the American Legion--an organization of war veterans--has seen fit to conduct a "Back to God" movement as part of its Americanism program. Veterans realize, perhaps more clearly than others, the prior place that Almighty God holds in our national life. And they can appreciate, through personal experience, that the really decisive battleground of American freedom is in the hearts and minds of our own people.

Now, if I may make a personal observation--you, my fellow citizens, have bestowed upon my associates and myself, ordinary men, the honor and the duty of serving you in the administration of your Government. More and more we are conscious of the magnitude of that task.

The path we travel is narrow and long, beset with many dangers. Each day we must ask that Almighty God will set and keep His protecting hand over us so that we may pass on to those who come after us the heritage of a free people, secure in their God-given rights and in full control of a Government dedicated to the preservation of those rights. I can ask nothing more of each of you of all Americans--than that you join with the American Legion in its present campaign.

Note: The President's remarks were part of an American Legion program, which was broadcast over radio and television from 8:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Stargate SG-1 Season 2 Episode 15

The Fifth Race

NOTES

This episode marks the first direct reference to the Ancients, the builders of the Stargates, on the series. The Ancients created the Stargate system and were in an alliance of four great races: the Nox, the Furlings, the Asgard, and the Ancients. They once resided in the galaxy of Ida, (where the Asgard live), and our galaxy but moved on from these regions of space leaving an archive of their knowledge, The Place of Our Legacy, on P3R-272.

CARTER Who are the Ancients?

DANIEL Well, I think they could be the teachers of roads. See, the Romans were the first real road builders. They spoke Latin and they learned to build roads from the gods, known as the Ancient ones.

CARTER I'm still not following you.

DANIEL Roads. Stargates. The Gate builders. What if these Ancients were the alien race who invented the Stargate?

CARTER You're still just speculating, right?

DANIEL Well, that would certainly explain why Jack knew about Stargates that the Goa'uld haven't even discovered yet.

CARTER I don't know, Daniel. Why would they invent a device that would do this?

DANIEL 'The place of our legacy', to pass on their knowledge. Jack may have the knowledge of the original Gate builders downloaded into his brain.

SEVRIN: We do not recognise Federation regulations nor the existence of hostilities. We recognise no authority save that within ourselves.

KIRK: Well, whether you recognise authority or not, I am it on this ship. I am under orders to transport you back to Starbase peaceably. From there you'll be ferried to your various planets. Because of my orders, you are not prisoners, but my guests. I expect you to behave as such.

CHAPEL: I thought all the animals were kept in cages.

KIRK: What's going on, Bones?

MCCOY: Trouble. Your friend here didn't want a checkup. Turns out there's a reason.

SEVRIN: I refuse to accept your findings.

MCCOY: You don't have the choice.

SEVRIN: They're the product of prejudice, not science.

MCCOY: I don't know what this man was planning on doing on a primitive planet, but assuming one did exist, I can tell you what would have happened had he settled there.

SEVRIN: Untrue!

MCCOY: There wouldn't have been enough primitives left to bury their dead.

SEVRIN: Fantasy. Fantasy.

MCCOY: I wish it were. There's a nasty little bug evolved in the last few years, Jim. Our aseptic, sterilised civilisations produced it. Synthococcus novae. It's deadly. We can immunise against it, but haven't learned to lick all the problems yet.

KIRK: Does he have it? What about the others?

MCCOY: All the others are clear. He doesn't have it. He's a carrier. Remember your ancient history? Typhoid Mary? He's immune, as she was, but he carries the disease and spreads it to others.

KIRK: Is the crew in danger?

MCCOY: I don't know. They all had full spectrum immunisations before boarding. Now my guess is that his friends have had their shots too. But a regular programme of shots is necessary. I'll have to check everyone on the ship. There could be some skips. In the meantime, he should be placed in total isolation.

SEVRIN: This is outrageous. You're not isolating me, you're imprisoning me. You invent a crime, find me guilty and sentence me!

MCCOY: Would you like to run the test, Doctor? You knew you were a carrier before you came aboard, didn't you?

SEVRIN: No!

MCCOY: Then why did you fight the examination?

SEVRIN: It was an infringement on my rights.

KIRK: Put him in isolation.

(The two med-techs haul Sevrin away)

MCCOY: Be ready for the objections, Jim. They are a vocal lot.

KIRK: Yes, I'm ready. Kirk to Security. I want a guard maintained on Doctor Sevrin until further notice. Bones, how long before we know whether the crew has been endangered by this infection?

MCCOY: It'll show in twenty four hours. It's a virulent strain.

Original Airdate: 21 Feb, 1969

IRINA: What are you working on?

CHEKOV: I am assisting Mister Spock in locating your Eden.

IRINA: Oh, now you are teasing me.

CHEKOV: I am not. These tapes contain star charts, and we project the orbits of the various planets here. By mathematical process, we determine whether or not they are affected by other bodies not yet charted.

IRINA: Do you know all these things?

CHEKOV: What I do not know I find out from the computer banks. If, if I knew nothing at all, I could navigate the ship simply by studying what is stored in there. They contain the sum of all human knowledge. They solve our problems of navigation. Of control. Of life support.

IRINA: They tell you what to do, and you do what they tell you.

STARGATE WIKI

2.16 "The Fifth Race" [ Stargate SG-1 ]

DANIEL
I really think he needs to do this alone, Teal'c.

[Teal'c watches as O'Neill walks up the ramp and stops in front of the event horizon.]

HAMMOND
(To Daniel)
I really hope this is the right thing to do.

[Carter runs into the embarkation room.]

CARTER
Wait, without the remote code device he won't be able to get back.

HAMMOND
Without knowing where he's going and why, that could put us in further jeopardy. I'm sorry, I can't authorize it.

[Daniel leaves Hammond's side and rushes up to O'Neill.]

DANIEL
Jack. You understand that if you do this, if you go, you might not be able to come back.

[O'Neill shares a long look with Daniel, then goes through the Gate.]

EXT—WORMHOLE TRAVEL SHOT

INT—SGC—CONTROL ROOM

[Simmons is at the controls. Carter comes in and sits next to him. Hammond, Daniel and Teal'c join them at the console.]

SIMMONS
Traveler is still on route.

[Computer then flashes "Tracking Lost". Simmons looks at Carter.]

SIMMONS
We've lost the traveler.

[Hammond looks out over the Stargate.]

EXT—WORMHOLE TRAVEL SHOT

INT—ALIEN PLANET—STARGATE ROOM

[O'Neill is thrown from the wormhole and lands heavily on the floor and rolling down the steps.]

O'NEILL
Arrgh!

[From behind a corner, an alien figure peeks out to see who's arrived. O'Neill is lying face down on the floor as the Stargate disengages. O'Neill looks around uncertain of his surroundings. From his vantage point he can see two pairs of very thin, grey legs. As the camera pans up, he recognizes the aliens as Asgard. The two Asgard regard him, as does he them. Stiffly, he rises to his feet and gets up to see many Asgard gathering and whispering. There are several dozen of them standing around a long corridor. The two that were close by are still there.]

O'NEILL

Ego…deserdi…asordo…

ASGARD #1
(In the Asgard language to the other Asgard)
He's human. From Earth.

ASGARD #2
(In the Asgard language)
But he's speaking the language of the Ancients.

O'NEILL
Comdo…asordo…

ASGARD #2
(In the Asgard language)
He wants help.

Cylon (1978)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cylons are a fictional race of robots in the original Battlestar Galactica TV series. They are the primary antagonists of the series and are at war with the Twelve Colonies of humanity. The Cylons also appeared in the short-lived 1980 spin-off series Galactica 1980.

Types

Humanoid

A rather new model probably first built long after the destruction of the Twelve Colonies of the Humans.

Two Cylon humanoids are featured in the episode "The Night the Cylons Landed" of Galactica 1980. One of which is named Andromus. Though it is entirely mechanical beneath its artificial skin, this model is an android and has a superficial human appearance

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 09/23/08 9:47 PM
I have been trying hard to remember the part of the dream that leads up to the point I remember dreaming about but as usual I cannot remember. The first part I remember is that I was steering the pontoon boat along the river and I seemed to be alone but details from later in the dream suggest I was not. On the bank to the right, I saw a group of people and there might have been another river channel leading off in that direction that they were on. I remember a woman saying "How dare you" but I don't know who she was referring to and I cannot actually remember seeing her. One person in the group started swimming in the river and crossed behind the boat towards the other side. Then there was something about a sign posted in the middle of the river channel that cautioned about a buried cable and then something about how people seldom used caution about that particular buried cable or about any other buried cable. I am not certain if the detail I heard from some unseen person was about that particular buried cable or about how people seldom use caution with buried cables in general. I might have cranked up the speed right about then but I am fuzzy on that part. The next part I remember was about dragging the boat out of the water and after being awake for a while I started to wonder if that has something to do with the portage area I was reviewing all those times at Allyn, Washington, but I do not think that is it although it could be some general reference to portage for boat. But I don't know. I don't think that is it.

Climate Change’s ‘Blob’ Heats Up In Northeast Pacific

They call it The Blob. No, it’s not some campy 1950s horror flick featuring a gelatinous monstrosity from space aimed at devouring all life in its path. This Blob is a pool of much hotter than normal water that has become increasingly entrenched in the North-East Pacific. A surface zone of record ocean warmth that has persisted and intensified in the same region for the better part of two years.

Though it’s not the sci-fi movie Blob, this particular climate change monstrosity could well be described as stranger than fiction. It’s an ocean feature of the Ridiculously Resilient Ridge which has warded storms off the North American West Coast over the past couple of years. A likely upshot of an ongoing Arctic heating — setting off weather conditions that sparked both this year’s massive Northwest Territory Wildfires and the worst drought the California region has seen in at least 1,000 years. And like the sci-fi movie space monster of yore, the Northeast Pacific heat Blob has a nasty penchant for devouring ocean life of all kinds.

(Under an ongoing El Nino, the Equatorial Pacific is getting pretty hot with temperature spikes ranging from +2.5 C above normal temperatures at mid-ocean to +4 C above average off the West Coast of South America. But these rather warm temperature anomalies are nothing compared to The Blob [at center frame above] which now features temperatures in the range of +5 C above average. Image source: Earth Nullschool.)

The news about The Blob today comes in two forms — bad and worse. The bad news is that it’s still there. Still influencing our weather, still threatening sea life and fisheries. And the worse news is that it appears to be heating up. Today’s readings put much of The Blob in the 3.5 to 5.5 C above average temperature range, which is 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius warmer than we’ve seen in this zone since its first heat intensification during the spring of 2014.

Threat to Sea Life

The AGU report also cited recent severe impacts to sea life as found in a March 17 study by NOAA. Highlights of the NOAA study showed substantial ocean life impacts including weaker copopod production in the warming waters, likely less vital salmon fisheries, bird deaths, marine mammal deaths and starving sea lions due to scarcity of food sources. In addition, the warm temperatures have been linked to a starfish wasting sickness that has killed off millions of sea stars up and down the North American West Coast.

What the NOAA report did not include was growing evidence that warming waters off the US West Coast have (when combined with eutriphication due to atmospheric nitrogen seeding through fossil fuel burning and farm nutrient runoff), since the early 2000s, resulted in increasingly dangerous low ocean oxygen levels (see Starving Sea Lion Pups and Liquified Starfish). It’s a one-two warming and oxygen loss that is pretty amazingly dangerous to ocean life.
