This Is What I Think.

She went before I did but I was already there.

I thought about that extensively. I think I wrote here before about how I tried to find again what I thought I wrote in my journal about it but could not find anything.

I had been there for months or longer. One day, I was passing through New York and I had the urge to drive through New York City. I was thinking that my mind was laboring with the notion I would be leaving there on that day going back to the real world and so I had taken out of my luggage my dress white US Navy uniform I was wearing that day months and months ago I found myself there in my new world. I had parked somewhere in the massive urban city and was walking along when I saw her there on the sidewalk, thinking she was a mannequin. I thought extensively of how only certain new vessels remained and I operated one US Navy to cross the Atlantic. We parted at a doorway after stating I would return to Charleston and I walked through a doorway before I even thought to say goodbye turning to find myself alone again.

And guess why I drove that ship across the Atlantic, operated completely by myself alone, a feat not possible for me in present circumstances.

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is the 2004 debut novel of British writer Susanna Clarke. An alternative history set in 19th-century England around the time of the Napoleonic Wars, it is based on the premise that magic once existed in England and has returned with two men: Gilbert Norrell and Jonathan Strange.

Faerie

Faerie, the home of the fairies, is a realm connected only magically to England.

In addition certain powerful personalities among fairies, such as Cold Henry, Col Tom Blue and John Hollyshoes appear to have acted as independent rulers of brughs.

Brugh

Brugh is an ancient word describing a fairy dwelling. It is usually translated as 'castle' or 'mansion' but really means the interior of a barrow or hollow hill. Such barrows are sometimes met with in our native landscape and seem innocent enough, being mere caves of earth. Yet they often have an eerie reputation, perhaps attributable to their subterranean nature. Few will venture into them alone, certainly not outside the hours of daylight; and even the area about them may be shunned by the local inhabitants. Learned antiquarians however maintain that these barrows were never dwellings as such, but tombs. It must be confessed the speculation does not greatly enhance their appeal.

Lost-hope is a brugh, and its appearance changes according to the character of its ruler. During the time of the gentleman with the thistle-down hair it exists as an immense and rambling stone edifice, replete with towers, surrounded by a high wall, but dark, neglected and poorly lit.

Lost-hope

Lost Hope (drawing by Mr Charles Dreiser, 1823) - Mr Dreiser accidently fell through his mirror while hanging up a rather pleasant painting of Two Dogs Chasing a Hare; it took him 18 months to get back, after which he couldn't endure even the faintest tolling of the tiniest bell.

Lost-hope is the home of the gentleman with the thistle-down hair. It is usually located in Faerie, though at times it also appears to intersect with Sir Walter Pole's house in Harley-street and occasionally with Starecross Hall in Yorkshire. As Jonathan Strange excitedly observes on his first visit there, Lost-hope is in fact a brugh, inhabited by many fairies.

During the lifetime of The Gentleman, Lost-hope has the appearance of a great mansion, with many skeletons and rusting suits of armor lying in the courtyard, and a malevolent wood around it. It is however implied strongly that people will perceive the house differently, depending on the circumstances under which they view it - in short, on whether or not they may be under the power of a spell.

In his first address to his new subjects Stephen states plainly that "This house is disordered and dirty. Its inhabitants have idled away their days in pointless pleasures and in celebrations of past cruelties - things that ought not to be remembered, let alone celebrated. I have often observed and often regretted it. All these faults, I shall in time set right." This promise appears likely to be kept; which is perhaps more than can be said for many another promise made in a speech from the throne.

Jonathan Strange

Jonathan Strange was the second magician of the Revival of English Magic. He was the pupil of Gilbert Norrell, who, along with Strange, restored the practice of English magic after an absence of more than two centuries. As a young magician, he performed numerous feats, including the summoning of Maria Absalom, various services for the Army during the war with Napoleon, and the defense of the King against a fairy kidnap attempt. When his powers matured, he left Norrell's tutelage, and the two became rivals of sorts. During this period, he again fought for the Army, and also delved deep into the study of magic's relationship with insanity in an attempt to rescue his wife Arabella Strange who had been abducted into Faerie. Perhaps his greatest feat was his crucial role in the restoration of magic to England, which led to his rescue of Arabella.

Jonathan Strange

Jonathan Strange was the second magician of the Revival of English Magic.

Early Studies

It is not clear where Strange went to school. Certainly he may have spent his early years in Edinburgh sharing lessons with his girl cousins but since we are not told his health was delicate it is unlikely he was educated entirely at home. There is alas good reason to suppose that, prior to dedicating himself to the study of magic, Strange found difficulty in concentrating his mind on any pursuit for long. Subjects which briefly captured his interest at odd times included poetry; farming; engineering; industry; the law; theology; and the popular craze for fossils.

Strange spent a year studying magic independently before his association with Norrell. During this time, he achieved a surprising degree of proficiency in the art, notably contacting the spirit of Maria Absalom using a series of spells mostly of his own composition. It can be assumed that Strange has a strongly intuitive grasp of magical theory since he likens magic to "music playing at the back of one's head - one simply knows what the next note will be." At Mr. Norrell's invitation he demonstrated his expertise by causing a book* to change places with its own reflection. The novelty of this magic so charmed Mr. Norrell that he instantly proposed that Strange become his pupil.

What I have been thinking lately is that my brother's wife (Why are you wearing the white dress uniform of an enlisted US Navy sailor, Thomas?) told me to play dumb when I returned to the real world. I am wondering if I posed for that photograph for a specific reason, since, presumably, I couldn't talk to anybody about anything.
