Barack Obama

738 - Remarks Prior to a Meeting With President Hu Jintao of China in New York City

September 22, 2009

President Obama. We welcome your delegation to New York. I'm sorry that I didn't have a chance to see you in L'Aquila, but your Councilor, Dai, did an excellent job representing your country.

I also have to say that I enjoyed seeing Vice Premier Wang as well as Councilor Dai at the SED meeting. And Vice President Biden and I both had excellent meetings with Chairman Wu 2 weeks ago in the White House. I should also mention that Vice Premier Wang showed me his jump shot, which is excellent. [Laughter] How do you say "basketball shot" in Chinese? [Laughter]

As you know, I'm committed to pursuing a genuinely cooperative and comprehensive relationship with China. We need to make our relationship more dynamic and effective, given the growing number of common global and regional challenges that our countries face.

And I'm very much looking forward to my visit to China in November. I want to take cooperation on a range of global and regional and bilateral to a new level, and I appreciate the excellent cooperation that you have already showed to our advance team. So we're very welcome, and I think that will be an excellent visit.

President Hu. Thank you, Mr. President, for your warm and friendly remarks. I'm happy to see that now China-U.S. relationship has shown a sound growth momentum on the whole.

The agreement you and I arrived at, at our London meeting, in a number of areas is being implemented, and our two sides are now working together to build a positive, cooperative, and comprehensive relationship for the 21st century.

I always agree that a good China-U.S. relationship not only serves the fundamental interest of both China and the United States and the two peoples but also contributes to peace, stability, and the prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and in the world at large.

The Chinese side is willing to work with the United States to keep our bilateral relationship firmly along the right course and deepen our pragmatic cooperation in a wide range of areas. The Chinese side is also willing to work with the United States to properly handle sensitive issues to ensure that our relationship will continue to grow on a sound and steady course.

GARDNER: It is very safe.

CALLEN: This this navy guy I looked at his apartment, and he was kidnapped, murdered. Did you know him?

GARDNER: Oh, every day he waves. I saw him this morning. He's dead?

CALLEN: And already his apartment's available. Unbelievable. Hey, you might have been the last person to see him alive.

Our office had been in a downtown mid-rise office tower next to the Bellevue mall and I lived in a really nice apartment about two blocks north. That apartment was quite possibly the nicest place I had ever lived before then. It was appointed better than the house I used to own in Greer South Carolina but that house was much larger and it was still very nice for a hundred thousand dollars. That won't buy you anything out here that I know of. Maybe that park bench I was sleeping on for a while back in the summer of 2005.

[This is pretty much the kind of treatment I received in the VA and before that at UW Medical Center. I like my doctor at UW. I don't remember her name, but I saw her again at the VA. I always felt good around her. That must be a good quality in a doctor.]

They stuck a lot of needles in me when I was inpatient at the University of Washington Medical Center back in the summer of 2005. I remember one very dark night when I was in a mental haze from the drugs they were forcing on me (only because I went to the City of Kent Washington police department to report criminal activity directed at my personal property and which continues unabated to this very day) and I awoke in the dark in that hospital bed and a woman was glaring at me as she stuck another needle in hand. I thought about that later and I decided she was glaring at me because she was possibly expected me to club her with my fist, which I did not.

Roslin: Man, that morpha worked fast.

Baltar: Still... Do you know why I'm so serene right now?

Roslin, indulging and funny: You're doped out of your mind?

Baltar: Because I know God. You need God, Laura. Really, you'd be a different woman. I know God, therefore I know myself. Truth is... I was harboring the most awful, desperate guilt. A heavy, dark... Unimaginable, soul-breaking guilt. Now it's gone. Now it's gone, it's been transformed. Into ... I have been transformed.

Roslin: What was your guilt about?

Baltar: I have no guilt.

But the damage from Microsoft lingers to this very minute. As you know because you are here. A perfect example was in the VA the other day. It never fails. I establish a routine and then when I do something different, I discover something new or I get reinforcement of my suspicions. This one guy thought I had left but I was actually sitting behind him when I usually sit to his left. He said something similar to what I have been saying about "another day at the office." I have never said a single word to any of those people in there and it is very troubling to hear my suspicions reinforced like that by strangers.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: August 22, 2006

As I was riding the bus to the VA, I remembered something else that happened at Microsoft. I was complaining to a friend one day about how Sharon Bjeletich had put a curtain up at the entrance to her cube so no one could see in. That was the second cube I sat in after moving to that new floor in the Bellevue office. Sharon sat two cubicles from me. Eddy Hahn was in the cube between us. I believe that Sharon put that curtain up because she, and everyone else, knew that there were cameras outside the building staring in at me and she was being captured in the frame. I am certain that happened in 2000 because I remember something from Halloween when I was still on that floor and by Halloween of 2001, we were all out at Issaquah. Halloween of 1999, I was still a TAM and I remember another TAM dressed up as a hockey player and he asked me if I was trying to work. Eddy is that guy I wrote about that worked in Las Vegas before Microsoft. He is from Budapest. I can't remember where Sharon was from originally but she is the one I wrote about that reminds me of Sarajevo. Eddy has one of those masks from that movie....can't remember the name now. Wasn't it something similar to "I Know What You Did Last Summer."? That movie came up one time when I was still a TAM. Something with Wally Simpson. I was leaving notes around his desk with that phrase on it. He said his son found the one I left in his closed laptop.

There was also that one doctor who told me that he was in charge of that group as well as the V.A. so that explains why the V.A. will have no sympathy in the action that must be taken to stomp down this bastion of The Mob.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 06/17/09 10:39 AM
It is also funny to consider how I said the exact same things that one other doctor was saying to me that last time I saw her and when she was starting to walk away after our conversation. Just basic pleasantries but I said the exact same words she was saying at exactly the same time.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 06/17/09 10:42 AM
I was at the V.A. that time and I was in the emergency room and I asked her at the beginning of our conversation if she was working there now instead of at the UW Medical Center and she said she was.

The American Presidency Project

Lyndon B. Johnson

XXXVI President of the United States: 1963-1969

568 - Statement by the President Upon Signing Bill Increasing Benefits for Federal Employees in Hazardous Duty Posts.

December 23, 1967

NOT ALL the soldiers in freedom's cause carry guns, or wear their country's uniform.

The war they fight is against the enemies that breed war--hunger and sickness and ignorance.

They fight this war not with bullets but by building the foundations of peace.

They advance the cause for which the soldier serves.

And when they carry on their work in the heat of armed conflict--in Vietnam or any other background--they share the soldier's risk.

American public servants in the villages and hamlets of Vietnam are helping a small nation shape its destiny. Their quiet labors are a shield against aggression's success.

But they are exposed to the hazards of a war which knows no fixed battlelines. Some have been kidnapped by the enemy. Some have been killed. Some are missing today.

The bill I sign recognizes the hardships those civilians face as they serve their country.

Here is what it does:

--It lets them go home twice a year to rejoin their families. And the Government pays the cost of the trips.

--It provides free transportation home in the event of a family emergency.

--It gives a year of convalescent leave to those injured in hostile actions. And this is not charged to their annual or sick leave.

--It provides special medical benefits for employee and his family.

These are small compensations measured against their sacrifice. But they show that America cares. They show that America has not forgotten its public servants in the State Department, AID, and USIA, whose courage and dedication to humanity are a badge of our commitment in Vietnam and the other troubled areas of the world.

Note: As enacted, the bill (S. 1785) is Public Law 90-221 (81 Stat. 671).

The statement was released at Cam Ranh Bay, Republic of Vietnam.

I went into the Redmond Police Department, exhausted, and asked them for help because I had lived in that town before Kent and I had worked for Microsoft, which was based in that town. They didn’t ask me any questions and just dumped me off at the hospital. They took me to Overlake in Bellevue first. The nurse seemed too eager to introduce herself to me, my instincts telling me there was something wrong with her introduction, but I couldn’t understand why. It reminds me of that time, after moving to Kent from Spokane and I was in the Wal Mart somewhere around Federal Way or Auburn. A woman on two different occasions said out loud, “Oh my God!” as she walked into an aisle I was in and saw me. The other woman told her to stop doing that. So they shuffled me around from that hospital and I stayed for about 4 days at UW Medical Center.

Memorable quotes for

2010 (1984)

Dr. Heywood Floyd: Wait... do you know why HAL did what he did?

Chandra: Yes. It wasn't his fault.

Dr. Heywood Floyd: Whose fault was it?

Chandra: Yours.

Dr. Heywood Floyd: Mine?

Chandra: Yours. In going through HAL's memory banks, I discovered his original orders. You wrote those orders. Discovery's mission to Jupiter was already in the advanced planning stages when the first small Monolith was found on the Moon, and sent its signal towards Jupiter. By direct presidential order, the existence of that Monolith was kept secret.

Dr. Heywood Floyd: So?

Chandra: So, as the function of the command crew - Bowman and Poole - was to get Discovery to its destination, it was decided that they should not be informed. The investigative team was trained separately, and placed in hibernation before the voyage began. Since HAL was capable of operating Discovery without human assistance, it was decided that he should be programmed to complete the mission autonomously in the event the crew was incapacitated or killed. He was given full knowledge of the true objective... and instructed not to reveal anything to Bowman or Poole. He was instructed to lie.

Dr. Heywood Floyd: What are you talking about? I didn't authorize anyone to tell HAL about the Monolith!

Chandra: Directive is NSC 342/23, top secret, January 30, 2001.

Dr. Heywood Floyd: NSC... National Security Council, the White House.

Chandra: I don't care who it is. The situation was in conflict with the basic purpose of HAL's design: The accurate processing of information without distortion or concealment. He became trapped. The technical term is an H. Moebius loop, which can happen in advanced computers with autonomous goal-seeking programs.

Walter Curnow: The goddamn White House.

Dr. Heywood Floyd: I don't believe it.

Chandra: HAL was told to lie... by people who find it easy to lie. HAL doesn't know how
