STS-58 SECOND SPACELAB MISSION DEDICATED TO LIFE SCIENCES

The Space Shuttle Columbia mission STS-58 will be the second spacelab flight dedicated to life sciences research. Columbia's seven crewmembers will perform a series of experiments to gain more knowledge on how the human body adapts to the weightless environment of space.

While in Earth orbit, almost every human physiological system undergoes some form of adaptation. Understanding the causes of these changes will aid NASA in the effort to fly longer missions as well as give researchers insight into medical problems experienced by indiviudals on Earth.

The STS-58 crew will perform experiments focusing on the cardiovascular, regulatory, neurovestibular and musculoskeletal systems of the body. The experiments performed on Columbia's crew and on laboratory animals, along with data collected on the SLS-1 mission in June 1991, will provide the most detailed and interrelated physiological measurements acquired in the space environment since the Skylab program in 1973 and 1974.

The SLS-2 cardiovascular/cardiopulmonary experiments seek to understand and quantify these changes that occur on orbit and focus both on the acute fluid shift and the long-term adaptation of the heart and lungs.

Quantifying and identifying the mechanisms and time course of how astronauts adapt to microgravity and then readjust to the normal gravitational forces on Earth is the focus of Experiment 066 -- "Inflight Study of Cardiovascular Deconditioning."

Data from SLS-1 suggest that the cardiovascular adjustment is seen in total peripheral resistance. In other words, the resistance of blood flow through the body and not cardiac output. Cardiac output stayed elevated throughout the SLS-1 mission, but total peripheral resistance adapted. Early inflight data was not collected on that flight and is needed to enhance the investigation's findings.

To do this, STS-58 crew members will be measuring cardiac output or the amount of blood pumped by the heart with each beat at rest and during exercise. Both activities begin with the subject performing a calibration with the Gas Analyzer Mass Spectrometer followed by the collection of heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory gas volumes and concentrations. Changes to these parameters will be measured during the exercise portion of the investigation.

ARLINGTON, Va. — President Barack Obama announced his nomination July 20 for Gen. James F. Amos to be appointed 35th commandant of the Marine Corps.










Many years later - later in the years of the early 1990s - I have memory of Tracie and I traveling from Greenville South Carolina to Six Flags in Atlanta. Several times this past decade I have thought about that. I specifically wondered over how, despite having been on roller coasters many times before that one time there in Atlanta I begin thinking my chest sort of hurt as the roller coaster flung us around the tracks.

One time at Six Flags in Dallas, we had an old-style photograph made. I can still visualize Randy Romine in it. I can also "remember" that I had been hit by a baseball a few days earlier and I still had a wound on my chin, which was visible in the grainy photo. We were dressed at a Confederate family and Randy and I were in Confederate uniforms. I was holding a sword and I had one hand on the handle and the other hand actually on the blade, which puzzled me over the past few years when I "remembered" that "memory."

That "memory" most certainly represents that I fought for the South Vietnamese military. The wound on my chin probably represents that I had been wounded in combat. I have puzzled several over that "memory" about how the doctors had told Randy he would never walk again because he had stepped on a landmine. I am thinking he stepped on three landmines. I can "remember" finding his three Purple Hearts stored away on the top shelf of the closet in my bedroom. I wonder if that "memory" about him never walking again actually represents something about me being in danger of not getting to walk on the Moon because I was getting involved in combat operations during the Vietnam War.

It could be that I was indeed wounded three times in the Vietnam War. Why else would I have that “memory”? None of my “memories” are real. The notion of the Confederacy is because I served with the South Vietnamese as they fought against being over run.

I was looking for photos of the STS-1 launch on 4/12/1981 and as I was looking at this photo of a later launch, for a brief instant, I almost thought I visualize seeing that orange booster tank from the windows of the Columbia.

I don't think it is visible while strapped into the flight deck chair though so maybe it was as I was climbing into the chair to wait for launch.

It could have also been that launch tower that is overhanging that triggered some kind of brief flash of a true memory of sitting there in the command chair. I have been thinking for a while that I was in command of that first flight, as well as later ones.

Shannon Matilda Wells Lucid (born January 14, 1943) is an American biochemist and a NASA astronaut. At one time, she held the record for the longest duration stay in space by an American, as well as by a woman. She has flown in space five times including a prolonged mission aboard the Mir space station.


Lucid was born in Shanghai, China, to Baptist missionary parents Oscar and Myrtle Wells, but grew up in Bethany, Oklahoma and graduated from Bethany High School. She attended the University of Oklahoma and obtained a Ph.D. in biochemistry from that school in 1973.


Lucid was selected for the NASA Astronaut Corps in 1978. Of the six women in this first class with female astronauts, Lucid was the only one who was a mother at the time of being hired.

Lucid's first space flight was in June 1985 on Space Shuttle Discovery's mission STS-51-G.

Mission Highlights:

STS-58 was the 4th longest mission in US manned space history and was dedicated to life sciences research. Columbia's crew performed a series of experiments to gain knowledge on how the human body adapts to the weightless environment of space. Experiments focused on cardiovascular, regulatory, neurovestibular and musculoskeletal systems of the body. The experiments performed on Columbia's crew and on laboratory animals (48 rats held in 24 cages), along with data collected on the SLS-1 mission in June 1991, will provide the most detailed and interrelated physiological measurements acquired in the space environment since the Skylab program in 1973 and 1974.

Crew members conducted experiments aimed at understanding bone tissue loss and the effects of microgravity on sensory perception. Two neurovestibular experiments investigating space motion sickness and perception changes were performed on the 2nd day as well. Astronauts Lucid and Fettman wore a headset, called an Accelerometer recording Unit, designed to continually record head movements throughout the day.

Only one minor issue came up on Tuesday, October 19, 1993 associated with a circuit breaker that tripped, cutting off power temporarily to one of the rodent cages in the module. Flight controllers in Houston reported it was not caused by a short in the electrical system and the breaker was reset, restoring power to the cage.

STS-58 was a mission flown by Space Shuttle Columbia launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on 18 October 1993. The missions was primarily devoted to experiments concerning the physiological effects of spaceflight. This was the first in-flight use of the "Portable In-flight Landing Operations Trainer" simulation software. It was also the last time Columbia would land at Edwards Air Force Base.


Mission highlights


Payload Commander Rhea Seddon sent down a special message to her husband, Astronaut Office Chief Robert L. Gibson when she surpassed his total of 632 hours, 56 minutes in space. "He's still a really good guy, I still love him a lot, but I've got more hours in space than he does, so there!" she teased. Seddon acknowledged, however, that he has more launches and landings, having flown four times to her three.
