I've looked at this photo several times trying to figure out why I look at it. The most obvious reason is that I remember having a small red pickup around that same time. That also just reminded me of the red wagon I had at Homer's place in the country outside Antlers.

FRYBURG, N.D. - Fabio Sau says moving from his native Italy to attend the University of North Dakota was like "coming to another planet" — and over the past week he used the state's wildest terrain for a simulated mission to Mars.
Sau was the guinea pig for an experimental Mars spacesuit that he and about 40 other students from five North Dakota schools developed under a $100,000 grant from NASA.
The suit was formally unveiled Saturday, on the last day of a test in a craterlike area surrounded by buttes in the North Dakota Badlands, the highly eroded landscape that researchers say resembles Martian terrain.
It took about 20 minutes for Sau to put on the 47-pound (21-kilogram), two-piece spacesuit with the help of two others. Then he walked out of a van, smiling and waving to a small crowd and giving a thumbs-up. He explored prairie brush and cactus, pulling equipment in a small red wagon and collecting rocks.
"This is a very small project," Sau said. "But it was very well executed, and it's the first step toward something bigger and better."

I would have certainly been involved in the computer from an early age too, along with my apparent involement with aircraft. I wrote a long time ago about how Homer Burgess, my great-uncle and then later my maternal grandmother's second husband, was the one who suggested when I was 7 years old to pursue a career as a "data processor."

My earliest "memories" are of her using a door in the kitchen of the house we lived in when she and Joseph were still married. It was an old house that Homer had been using as a barn. She used the door as some kind of kitchen counter top.

I think I actually found Homer’s place again on the map. It is on the right side of the road, traveling away from Antlers, but it is closer to Mansell Road, I think. Mansell is a new road relatively speaking. When I was a kid, there wasn’t a house over there and I think that road was created for that house. Mansell Road lines up with a road that Homer and Joseph Burgess were trying to create to run to Homer’s place. I “remember” something about Homer planning to build a house behind where that little trailer they had was located, but they never finished either one. You can still see a faint outline from where they started shaping the road. There is a structure visible on the map where I think Homer’s place was and I think that is a barn or a freight trailer he used as a storage shed. The barn and trailer were next to each other and the chicken coop was a little farther away. The path of the winding dirt road that led to Homer’s farm looks as I remember it, judging by the satellite photo. I can almost make out the little pond in the wooded area behind and to the map left of the farm. I caught a bass one time when I was a kid and Homer cut a notch in its tail fin and released it into the pond. That dirt road that runs to the map left away from the structure and along the tree line, I remember goes through some fields. I can remember Homer plowing those fields from behind his Jeep that Betty was driving. There was a big cliff out there in that direction in the trees. Where that dirt road circled back around to the asphalt road, there were some small cabins that I remember Fletcher staying at one time. I want to say that Pauline kicked him out of his house and he was living there until she let him back, but that’s all I can remember about it.

Lambeth Bridge is a road traffic and footbridge crossing the River Thames in an east-west direction in central London, the river flows north at the crossing point. Downstream, the next bridge is Westminster Bridge; upstream the next is Vauxhall Bridge.
The most conspicuous colour in the bridge's paint scheme is red, the same colour as the leather benches in the House of Lords which is at the southern end of the Palace of Westminster nearest the bridge. There was no turning back.
Dad stood behind him. Mom was down below, camera poised. They were smiling.
Here he was about to plummet to his doom and they were smiling.

But now it was just him and the wagon. One on one.
They said he’d love whooshing down the slide. But isn’t that what they always tell the ones who don’t know any better? The ones who don’t come back.
He’d had a good life. That much was sure. Lots of strained vegetables and some darned good naps.
Girls? Yeah, he’d known a few. And maybe, just maybe, if he had more time, he might have begun to figure them out.
But now it was as if he could hear the Clock Tower ticking. It just kept getting louder.
A bell was ringing at the nearby Carrousel.
It tolls for thee.
“When did it happen?” people would ask later. And the answer would be “A little after 6 o’clock on Saturday night.”
Poor kid, they’d say. He was so young. So full of promise.
The red wagon was in the shade. Earlier in the day, it had been sun-baked and hot as a griddle. People had kept their distance.
Now it once again exerted its magnetic pull on families, especially those armed with video cameras.
The little boy in cowboy boots had seen other kids go down the slide. And they seemed to make it OK.
But it’s a funny thing. When a piece of playground equipment’s got your name on it, it doesn’t matter what happened to others.
It was time. One last look back at Dad. Then a few tentative scoots toward the point of no return where gravity squeezes you in its cold grip.
Using his hands as brakes on the side-rails and skin-squeaking half the way down, the little boy’s speed never exceeded 1 mph.
Reaching bottom and discovering that somehow he had survived, he sprang up and ran around to the steps at the back of the slide.
Ready to go again.

Urban Wildlife Waterfall And Cougars Add Artistic Touch To Downtown Building

Unbeknownst to many, the creator of many of Spokane’s treasured public art, Ken Spiering, added yet another with last year’s opening of the downtown STA Plaza.
The artist, responsible for “The Childhood Express” red wagon in Riverfront Park, the “Passage: Immediate and Eternal” wood sculpture in City Hall and numerous other works around town, finally saw the complexities of creating a new public sculpture come to an end in November 1995 - but only after several years of planning, paperwork and execution. Spiering became involved when the Spokane Transit Authority invited him and others to compete for an art project.
His art work puts a bit of Northwest nature in the heart of downtown’s newest urban structure. A ride on the escalator between the first and second floors is a ride next to two mountain cats, real greenery and a running waterfall. The placement of organic amid concrete and metal architecture is the contrast Spiering particularly hoped to achieve.
The artist also wanted an interactive installation that would allow passersby an act of individual participation - which, in Spiering’s own words, “is acquiring a small piece of ownership.” As it turns out, the public has initiated their participation by tossing coins into the waterfall, thereby investing a claim.
Spiering spent two years refining his proposal before the project was begun. The artist experienced the creative challenge of finalizing a design according to building specifications that were strictly on paper. Although Spiering was originally searching for the perfect wall to support a mosaic treatment, the perfect wall never presented itself. Consequently, his first concept was ultimately reshaped and redefined to the present construction: a simulated Northwest mountain waterfall harboring two large bronze cats, titled “Cataract.”
Although many artists experiment with different mediums, few display the range shown by Spiering. He credits watching his homesteader father for his interest in so many handicrafts, and as the variety of his works around town attests, Spiering doesn’t hesitate to set his hands to something new. His creations leap dramatically from one material to another; three-dimensional modeling, welding, and bronze casting are only a few of the techniques used in this installation.
The one component Spiering chose to leave to other hands was the waterfall itself, constructed by an out-of-state company according to his specifications. Having completed so many public works to date and knowing the complexities, Spiering wisely decided to leave the potential hazards of a water installation to someone else.
The resulting installation definitely adds an unexpected component to the STA structure. Whereas a large, abstract and colorful piece would have been predictable (considering the architecture), Spiering’s final product is quite the opposite. No doubt the existing creation has more of a unique impact on the whole Plaza than alternatives, and subtleties such as the cat tracks leading to the falls from each end add an extra touch.
The one subtlety that is not as desirable is the current absence of a marker crediting the artist’s design, and certainly one would hope that such a label is in the works to acknowledge Spiering’s latest addition to Spokane’s art in public places.
