STARGATE WIKI

Stargate: The Movie (1994)

DANIEL
Fearful of a rebellion here, Ra outlawed reading and writing. He didn't want the people to remember the truth.

[Kawalski comes back around the corner from where he'd been exploring another part of the cave.]

KAWALSKI
Jackson? I think you'd better take a look at this.

[Daniel and O'Neil follow Kawalski where Brown and Skaara are. A round stone, similar to the center of the Earth Stargate cover stone, is imbedded in the wall.]

DANIEL
That's it! That's what we're looking for! They must've hidden it here in hopes that one day the 'gate on Earth could be reopened. I knew they'd have it written down someplace.

Rotary breaks ground on park fountain

Hilary Kraus The Spokesman-Review

The seed was planted nearly 30 years ago, but it wasn’t until Friday that city and Rotary Club officials broke ground on the Rotary Fountain in Riverfront Park.

Beneath an intermittent drizzle, the group gathered on a three-quarter-acre site that will be transformed into a $1.25 million interactive water fountain and plaza. It is scheduled to open in late May 2005, in time for the Northwest district Rotary conference.

Project designer Bob Perron was among those who watched as the first holes were dug into the cold, wet ground by Mayor Jim West, Dan Cadagan, Rotary Foundation project committee chairman, and other dignitaries. Perron, designer of Riverfront Park, had the vision of an elaborate entrance fountain in 1975.”There was not enough money in the budget then,” Perron said.

Perron, a resident of Portland and architect of that city’s Salmon Street Spring, said the idea resurfaced about 2½ years ago. The Rotary Club wanted to make a major contribution to the city.

The fountain and plaza are being funded by a public-private partnership between the Spokane Park Board and the Downtown Spokane Rotary Club 21. The fundraising has reached 96 percent of the needed amount, thanks to 415 donors, including 31 who each gave more than $5,000.

“This is by far the most significant project we have ever taken on,” Nancy Kennedy, Club 21 president said during the formal ceremony.

The fountain and plaza will bring a radically different look to the entrance of the park. It will cover an area from the Spokane River to Spokane Falls Boulevard on the south border and from the carousel to the “Christmas tree” on the west edge.

Harold Balazs, commissioned as the sculptor, has designed a work that will tell the story of the Spokane Falls and its relationship to native people.

“We were interested in a fountain that reflected in the history of the community,” said Perron, who has worked with Balazs on other architectural projects.

But unlike Perron’s original idea – sculptured children holding hands in water – the flat-deck Rotary Fountain will be run by computer and will be constantly changing. It will have about 140 water jets, sprays, misters, ground hugging fog and other features. It will stand on five stainless columns that are 24 feet high.

The fountain will be open for anyone who wants to play in the water, and will operate from 6 a.m. until midnight from mid-spring to mid-fall, temperature permitting. The fountain may be operated in winter with the mist creating ice formations.

Annual maintenance is estimated between $20,000 and $25,000, Cadagan said. Power alone would cost about $12,000 a year.

Perron said most of the construction is underground piping, which can be done in winter.

“This is going to be one of those things that brings ‘Wow!’ to the city,” West said.

ORIGINAL U.S. AIR DATE - 07.16.04

WEIR: This really bothers you, this whole gene thing, huh?!

McKAY (sarcastically): Oh, clearly I am overcome with envy.

(Doctor Daniel Jackson runs into view.)

JACKSON: Ah, just the people I need to see.

(He turns and walks away again. Weir and McKay look at each other. After a few moments, Daniel comes back into view.)

JACKSON: Come with me.

(He walks away again. This time Weir and McKay follow him.)

SHORTLY AFTERWARDS. Daniel leads the other two into a lab.

JACKSON: We've gotten closer and closer to finding the location of the Lost City but it turns out we've been looking in the wrong place all along. (He walks over to a whiteboard on which are drawn six Stargate coordinates with the numbers 1-6 above them.) Now, we thought we had a Stargate address -- six symbols representing coordinates in space that determine the location of the planet the Ancients went to after they left Antarctica. Now, recently we determined a seventh symbol. (He picks up a pen and draws the symbol representing Earth on the board to the right of the other symbols.)

WEIR: The point of origin, Earth.

JACKSON: That's not it.

McKAY: Then your address must be incorrect.

JACKSON: Not incorrect… incomplete.

(He draws another symbol in between the sixth symbol and the Earth symbol.)

WEIR: What are you saying, Doctor Jackson?

(Daniel numbers the newest symbol 7 and the Earth symbol 8.)

JACKSON: It's an eight symbol address. What we're looking for may be further away than we ever imagined, but it's not out of reach.

McKAY: Atlantis!

JACKSON: Atlantis. I think we can go there.

King s Message

Better Days Lie Ahead

' London (AAP)

THE Empire showed, the way to the world when the bombs were falling, and it can, by its discipline, endurance, and patience, show the way into peace, said King. George in his Christmas message.

"Better days lie ahead," the King said. "Our task is to mobilise the Christmas spirit and apply its power and heal- ing to our daily life."

The King spoke alone in his study at Sandringham, where a gold microphone was installed. The Queen, the Princesses, and Queen Mary listened to his words through a loud speaker.

Burdens

"The year that is passing has not been easy," said His Majesty. "Statesmen and poli- ticians have been burdened with the resettlement of a world shattered by global war.

"All of us, instead of getting some well-earned relaxation after years of intensive work, have had to put our shoulders to the wheels of industry and agriculture with redoubled vigour. Men and women re- turned from wartime service to conditions that were only slowly improving from wartime austerity, while the housewife, perhaps the most gallant figure of all, still bears many of the extra burdens she bore so bravely throughout the war.

Courage

"With all these trials to be faced, I am indeed proud that you are able to maintain that energy, cheerfulness, and cour- age this difficult times demands.

"We cannot expect the world, so grievously wounded, to re- cover quickly, but its conva- lescence can certainly be hastened by our continued en- durance and good will. In His own good time God will lead our feet into ways of peace. *

"Guns have ceased to kill, r bombs have ceased to fall, and though the clouds are still dark there is light behind them.

Better days lie ahead.

"Let us not concentrate too much on the difficulties of the present-they will pass-nor on memories of unhappy experi- ences which all of us had. Let us rather think of the possi- bilities the future may hold

Reconstruction

"Reconstruction so urgently needed everywhere is quite as much spiritual as material. "It is necessary not merely to feed hungry people and to re- build ruined cities, but also to restore civilisation's very soul. "We cannot all think alike amid the dilemmas of a chang- ing world, nor is it right that we should. Opinion striking against opinion ignites a spark that can kindle the lamp of truth.

Road To Truth

"If our feet are on the road of common charity that leads to ultimate truth, our differences will never destroy our under- lying unity and our^ disputes will not leave us either embit- tered or unkind. If the coming yeal' has its uncertainties, it has its promises. By God's help and by our own endeavours let us make these brighter promises come true.

"My dear people, I wish you well. May the New Year be full of blessing for each one of you. Welcome it when it comes with hope, courage, and 'greet the Unseen with a cheer.' "

EXT—DESERT, DAY

[An unconscious Daniel gets licked in the face by the mastadge. He comes to, choking at the vile smell. O'Neil, Kawalski, and Brown are just reaching him.]

BROWN
You okay, Jackson?

[O'Neil gets distracted from Daniel's predicament by what he sees.]

O'NEIL
Kawalski. Brown.

[They both get up and follow O'Neil. The mastadge continues to nudge at Daniel.]

DANIEL
Ugh. Get away from me.

[O'Neil and the others pause at the top of the dune. Daniel stands and sighs, petting the mastadge absently as he watches Brown and Kawalski drop, weapons ready on either side of a standing O'Neil. He joins them, the Ra necklace shining brightly from where it came out from under his shirt during his dragging.]

Pollution limits pit Ecology, dischargers; Spokane River cleanup costly for industry, ratepayers

The Spokesman-Review (Spokane, WA)

December 12, 2004 Karen Dorn Steele Staff writer

Protecting the quality of the Spokane River will cost ratepayers more money. The question is how much. As Washington state regulators propose stringent pollution limits for the region's treasured waterway, industrial dischargers and Spokane utility officials say the cleanup plan is unaffordable.

Industrial and municipal dischargers are asking the Washington Department of Ecology to delay any decision until next year - when a Republican governor may be installed in Olympia if the current election recount goes Dino Rossi's way.

In a new economic study to be released by the end of the month, the dischargers say the state's proposed pollution limits will cost too much. …
