Well, Paul, Senator, I hope you'll forgive me for having a little fun here tonight. The truth is, ladies and gentlemen, this isn't the easiest set of remarks that I've ever been asked to give. And that comes from someone who's had to give a fair number of speeches. Come to think of it, Paul, you've probably had to sit through more of them than either one of us wants to admit. And I know that finding the right word or expression can oftentimes mean the difference between hurting or helping, between doing this job well or not so well. But sometimes the words just aren't there. The task is really impossible. I guess that was what Lincoln felt at Gettysburg. He knew there are occasions when words must be brief because the feelings are so deep, and this evening is one such occasion.

Well, I appreciate your presence here today and deeply appreciate all that many of you have been doing to ensure that our countrymen continue to enjoy the richness and beauty of America. There's a story I like to tell, and I've told it an awful lot of times, but I hope I haven't told it to any of you.
It has to do with an old farmer who picked up some creek-bottom land. It was all covered with rocks and overgrown with brush, but he set to work. And he hauled the rocks away, and he cleaned the brush. And he cultivated, and he fertilized, and he planted. And he had a garden spot. And one day at church, he asked the preacher if he wouldn't, after church, come on out and see what he'd done. Well, the Reverend got out there, and he looked at that corn. And he said, "I've never seen such corn. My," he said, "how the Lord has blessed this land. Those melons—I've never seen anything so big." He said, "God has certainly been good to this place here." And he went on that way, and the old boy was getting a little fidgety. And finally, he says, "Reverend, I wish you could have seen it when the Lord was doing it by Himself." [Laughter]
Well, today we're honoring praiseworthy citizens who are giving God a hand in preserving our precious gifts. Unlike the farmer in the story, more often than not, those we honor today are protecting our land from some of mankind's more wasteful and destructive ways. Some of America's greatest assets are, of course, the parks, national forests, and other public lands that have been set aside for the benefit and enjoyment of our people and for future generations. When one thinks of America, one thinks of purple mountain majesties, of bald eagles, of natural beauty, and of great halls where our ancestors gathered to lay the foundations of our democracy.
We take pride in our freedom, and we also take pride in the natural grandeur of our land. And there's much to be proud of. We have in our country the world's first and best national park system, national forests and wildlife refuges, an extraordinary urban park system, and preserved historic sites. And all this is the legacy of caring individuals, perhaps like the ones we honor today, who acted to see that these treasures were preserved and passed on. Our administration has been solidly committed to the restoration and maintenance of this inheritance. In the past 61/2 years, we've spent $1 billion to restore our national parks, which had been permitted to fall in some disrepair over a period of time. In the past 6 1/2 years, as I say, we've done that, and we've strictly upheld laws protecting our endangered species and have vigorously pursued plans to recover them. We've moved to stem the serious loss of vital wetlands, and we've set aside millions of
acres of wilderness, created 29 new wildlife refuges, and protected thousands of miles of scenic rivers and trails.
And thank you all. God bless you. And I'll bet it won't take you long to get back in the shade, will it? [Laughter] I'm heading there right now.

LEAD: The United States Navy destroyed two mines in the Persian Gulf today at the spot where an explosion damaged an American warship on Thursday, and Pentagon officials asserted that the mines were put there recently by Iran.
The United States Navy destroyed two mines in the Persian Gulf today at the spot where an explosion damaged an American warship on Thursday, and Pentagon officials asserted that the mines were put there recently by Iran.
Pentagon officials said that lookouts on the frigate that was damaged, the Samuel B. Roberts, had sighted several mines in the water just before the explosion. The ship tried unsuccessfully to avoid the mines, the officials said.
Previously, Pentagon officials had said there was no direct evidence to show that the blast was caused by a mine, although this seemed the most likely possibility. Ten crew members were injured, two of them seriously.

Q. Mr. President, Bill Sharp from WCSC in Charleston, South Carolina. Mr. President, to those people who might say your Presidency and you have been mortally wounded by the Iran-contra affair, how would you answer those people?
The President. Well, sometimes before I've used a line from an old Scottish ballad to the effect that, yes, I'd been wounded-"I'll lie me down and rest a bit, and then I'll fight again."

Incidentally, on that short answer that I gave you on mortally wounded—I have to say that I get around quite a bit in the country, and the audiences range from blue-collar workers in a factory, as they did just a few days ago, to students and their families at a graduation ceremony. And I haven't seen any evidences that I've been mortally wounded, nor do the people seem to be unhappy about what we've been doing here.

I was thinking this morning or last night about all that commotion in the Ironman community a few years ago about people racing under other people's name. That would seem to tie in with my theory about Tom Warren and Tom Watson. They are probably real people, but I think they know I was there. Not exactly clear on this, but it means something. I suspect that people were all talking about something along these lines and that produced the buzz about the "phantom" competitors.

Date with an Angel tells the story of Jim Sanders (Michael Knight), an executive at a cosmetics company who's about to marry Patty Winston (Phoebe Cates), who is also the daughter of Jim's boss. But Jim also suffers from a brain tumor, and his headaches have gotten worse. Indeed, it is suggested he will die, and an angel (Emanuelle Beart) arrives on the scene, given the task of bringing Jim's soul back to heaven on the night of his engagement party.
But after his three buddies 'kidnap' Jim to take him to another celebration for him at his home, Jim decides that he had enough of partying and goes to sleep. Later, Jim wakes up to see a bright light illuminating from his apartment's swimming pool...and discovers the angel knocked unconscious after her wings were clipped by a satellite.
Since having a real live angel around could hurt his upcoming nuptials to the spoiled Patty, Jim decides to keep her shielded from the world while he helps her repair her wings. Inevitably, his buddies and his boss both discover the blonde beauty in his house; so does Patty, who thinks the angel is having an affair with Jim after spying the angel at his apartment. Later, Patty sees the angel and Jim together again...on television, as he rescues her from being exposed to the world by his buddies, after they kidnapped her by using Wendy's french fries as bait.
After they escape to an old hideaway that he knew from childhood, Jim finally helps the angel restore her wings, allowing her to return to the pearly gates. However, a drunken and delusional Patty (who in a memorable scene puts on a pair of panties outside her blue jeans), starts chasing after Jim with a shotgun; her father, Jim's parents, and his buddies also arrive to confront him. Amid the chaos, Jim's uncontrollable headaches cause him to collapse to the ground, but the angel returns to save him, by unleashing storm clouds.
Later, in the hospital, Jim's brain tumor gets worse and his situation appears grim. But then the angel comes back to see him, finally telling Jim that it was her original intention to take him to heaven. Instead, she actually saves him, and in the process is returned to earth as a normal human being

LEAD: The United States Navy destroyed two mines in the Persian Gulf today at the spot where an explosion damaged an American warship on Thursday, and Pentagon officials asserted that the mines were put there recently by Iran.
The United States Navy destroyed two mines in the Persian Gulf today at the spot where an explosion damaged an American warship on Thursday, and Pentagon officials asserted that the mines were put there recently by Iran.
Pentagon officials said that lookouts on the frigate that was damaged, the Samuel B. Roberts, had sighted several mines in the water just before the explosion. The ship tried unsuccessfully to avoid the mines, the officials said.
Previously, Pentagon officials had said there was no direct evidence to show that the blast was caused by a mine, although this seemed the most likely possibility. Ten crew members were injured, two of them seriously.

KABUL, Afghanistan - The U.S. Embassy in Kabul imposed strict security precautions, including the evacuation of some U.S. staff members, following intelligence reports that the mission may be under threat from Iran, diplomatic sources said Sunday.
The sources declined to elaborate on the possible danger but said it was a direct result of the U.S-Iranian clashes in the Persian Gulf last week.
One source said while U.S. embassies worldwide were placed on alert, particularly those in the Middle East, intelligence reports indicated the potential threat "is something that pertains to this place."
"There is a feeling that something is going to happen here," he said.
An Iranian speedboat attacked a Saudi-owned tanker in the Persian Gulf Sunday, just a day after President Reagan warned Iran to stop attacking neutral shipping or face retaliation.
April 18, U.S. warships and jet fighters destroyed two offshore Iranian oil platforms in the southern gulf, leaving six Iranian vessels sunk or badly damaged and a Marine helicopter gunship with two crewmen aboard missing. Iran said 15 of its sailors were killed.
The strike was in retaliation for a suspected Iranian mine explosion April 14 that damaged the U.S. frigate Samuel B. Roberts, injuring 10 crewmen.
Referring to a possible threat at the embassy, one diplomatic source said Iranian agents easily could slip across Afghanistan's border with Iran posing as Afghan refugees returning home following the April 14 signing of U.N.-mediated accords in Geneva. The accords provide for a nine-month withdrawal of Soviet forces beginning May 15.
