Subject: as of a drama

In regard to his companions his mind wavered between two opinions, according to his mood. Sometimes he inclined to believing them all heroes. In fact, he usually admired in secret the superior development of the higher qualities in others. He could conceive of men going very insignificantly about the world bearing a load of courage unseen, and although he had known many of his comrades through boyhood, he began to fear that his judgment of them had been blind. Then, in other moments, he flouted these theories, and assured him that his fellows were all privately wondering and quaking.

His emotions made him feel strange in the presence of men who talked excitedly of a prospective battle as of a drama they were about to witness, with nothing but eagerness and curiosity apparent in their faces. It was often that he suspected them to be liars.

He did not pass such thoughts without severe condemnation of himself. He dinned reproaches at times. He was convicted by himself of many shameful crimes against the gods of traditions.

In his great anxiety his heart was continually clamoring at what he considered the intolerable slowness of the generals. They seemed content to perch tranquilly on the river bank, and leave him bowed down by the weight of a great problem. He wanted it settled forthwith. He could not long bear such a load, he said. Sometimes his anger at the commanders reached an acute stage, and he grumbled about the camp like a veteran.

My return in 1998 was different though. I returned but I am a composite version of Tom Reagan and Kerry Burgess. I am not as tall as Tom Reagan and I am as tall as Kerry Burgess but I do not have the physical scars of Kerry Burgess, such as the gunshot wound scar he had on his shoulder.

It has something to do with graft. In this movie, the Borg graft skin onto Data, and there is something symbolic to that. I need to watch this again and think more about this. But I suspect this all has been about exposing some kind of graft, perhaps related to defense contracts.

Data: You have reactivated my emotion chip. Why?

Borg Queen: Don't be frightened.

Data: I am not frightened.

Borg Queen: Do you know what this is, Data?

Data: It would appear you are attempting to graft organic skin onto my endoskeletal structure.

Borg Queen: What a cold description for such a beautiful gift.

Memorable quotes for

The Next of Kin (1942)

Narrator: [Spoken as camera pans across dead soldiers after the battle sequence] The object of the raid has been achieved. Locked gates, oil storage tanks, harbour equipment were destroyed. One enemy submarine was put out of action, our own losses, both in men and craft were very heavy. The enemy had been warned. He was waiting for us. And although our troops fought throughout with great skill and gallantry, they were not able to effect the surprise that had been hoped for. They paid the price for bad security. The next of kin of causalities' have been informed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scar

Scar

Scars are areas of fibrous tissue (fibrosis) that replace normal skin after injury. A scar results from the biological process of wound repair in the skin and other tissues of the body. Thus, scarring is a natural part of the healing process. With the exception of very minor lesions, every wound (e.g. after accident, disease, or surgery) results in some degree of scarring. An exception to this is animals with regeneration, which do not form scars and the tissue will grow back exactly as before.

Treatments

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, no scar can be completely removed although in some cases its appearance can be improved. High melanin levels and either African or Asian ancestry may make adverse scarring more noticeable. As of 2004 no prescription drugs for the treatment or prevention of scars were available.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels are chemicals which destroy the epidermis in a controlled manner, leading to exfoliation and the alleviation of certain skin conditions including superficial acne scars. Various chemicals can be used depending upon the depth of the peel and caution should be used, particularly for dark-skinned individuals and also including individuals susceptible to keloid formation or those with active infections.

Filler injections

Filler injections of Collagen or ArteFill can be used to raise atrophic scars to the level of surrounding skin. Risks vary based upon the filler used, and can include temporary improvement, further disfigurement, and allergic reaction.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion involves the removal of the surface of the skin with specialist equipment or not and usually involves a local anaesthetic.

Laser Treatment

Non-ablative lasers such as the 585 nm Pulsed Dye Laser, 1064 nm and 1320 nm Nd:YAG, or the 1540 nm Er:Glass are used as the standard laser therapy for hypertrophic scars and keloids. This therapy smooths the skin by heating up and redistributing collagen while avoiding damage to the epidermis via contact cooling. Multiple sessions are usually required for a significant reduction in redness and improvement in the texture and pliability of hypertrophic scars and keloids.

The doctor who saw me at the VA

After the x-ray’s, he laughed and said that I was “full of shit.” The woman taking the x-ray’s was laughing too.
