On the theme of something I wrote earlier today, I have been thinking for several days, maybe weeks or longer, about something I said to Lynn after I came back from Utah in 2002. I was joking about the lousy lake we had to swim in. I joked that I went down to the water and then asked myself: "who organized this race, Osama bin Laden?" I went on to describe to her some thoughts that I don't know why I was having about how terrorists would go after the most physically fit people in preparation for an invasion. Now that I think about, I now remember something I read about the Soviets planning something like that with pilots in a country, Norway I think, in preparation for a Warsaw Pact invasion of NATO. They kept track of all the pilots in their homes and then planned to murder them just before the invasion took place so they wouldn't be in the air to fight back.

I was thinking yesterday about something someone said to me at Microsoft. It was my primary contact at that customer in Raleigh. I forget his name, not sure about the company name, might have been DoubleClick, maybe PeopleClick. I was talking to him on the phone and he told me that he "didn't know what he didn't know." My instincts tell me this is important and wasn't spoken to me in terms of asking for technical consulting. Rather, as his company was the primary vendor for a new application for Microsoft HR department, someone in HR told him who I really was and that I didn't know who I really was. I called him back with some relevant information on a particular technical subject and told him I had the "411" on that subject.

I was watching The Postman again last night on tv and I thought again about something Tavener did. In Microsoft Premier, we had web pages set up for our group so that any one in the company could access the details we accumulated on these software companies we were delighting with our excellent customer service skills. The pages were originally created to include a photo of each person. I got tired of my photo, as it had been taken right after a long day in Portland and a very long drive back and I was exhausted. I figured out that the webpages had been designed to allow us to change the picture at our discretion so I changed mine to something else, I think the first one was an image of a T-Rex for some reason. Anyway, Tavener changed his to a photo of Kevin Costner. Someone asked him about it with something like astonishment, can't think of a better word. I wondered if it was something gay, as in he thought he looked like Kevin Costner, and was trying to....I don't know....it was weird.

I started thinking this morning about a jacket I used to wear long ago. I bought it around the time Lynn and I started bicycling, which I think was in 1999. I wore that jacket every time I went cycling and some parts of it were green and other parts blue. I remember one time, after I had been wearing it for a long time, I noticed that the logo emblem on one side of the chest was labeled as “Brooks.” I can remember feeling something like surprise that it was labeled “Brooks.”

I met someone from Corbis one time, wasn't it when I volunteered for Danskin? She was also a volunteer. But there was also someone I was riding bicycles with one time who worked at Corbis. Let's see......I met her in a new group of cyclists......it was Kate that invited me. Kate was a woman, from England I believe, who worked at Microsoft and I met her at Suzanne Morgans house. I think it was the time Suzanne invited me over for a Christmas party. I liked Kate, she had red hair and there was something else I can't remember that attracted me. She was also a very strong cyclist. That was probably around 2000. I was still riding with Grace Stahre then, as Kate was riding around Mercer Island with Grace and I. I don't remember riding with Grace after the STP of 2000. I did it the next year by myself.

So in 2000, I completed that STP course with a couple friends I had been training with. I remember the year starting out with a friend and I riding along the Samm. Trail and it was so cold I had ice in my moustache. There was also ice built up on my handlebars. I remember some buzz around the office about how my appearance had changed after I had been bicycling for a while. A few years later, a coworker died and I was worried for a while that I was setting some kind of standard, that managers were holding other people to my standard and it was motivating people to rush into exercise without proper medical consultation. I asked if they ever found out what happened to him, but all I heard was that it was some kind of brain clot. Then, as if my magic, Microsoft began offering a very good sounding medical program for people that wanted to lose weight and get into shape. It sounded good, and was certainly a coincidence as it seemed to be just what was needed if indeed I was inspiring people to try to catch up with me.

So we rode about 165 miles the first day and about 35 miles the second day. I had made up some maps for my co-riders husband to intercept us at the 165-mile point. My friend told me when I gave him the maps that I had too much time on my hands. I would later hear that from people at work and take it as an indication they were being pressured to produce as much as I.

I was living in that apartment before Limestone because I can remember my friends dropping me off there after we drove back from Portland.

I'm pretty sure it was later that year when a friend invited me to take a walk around Green Lake. I'm thinking it was 2000 because I remember that I was really out of breath when we started walking. I had completed that STP before this, I think, although I'm not really sure even if this was after July 2000 and maybe it was before. But anyway I was still in pretty lousy shape back then in hindsight. I am about back to that point now or maybe worse. I am definitely going to consult with a doctor before getting back to my triathlon pursuits. So anyway, we were almost all the way around GL and an approaching woman jogging along pulled up and started walking as soon as she got near us. We made eye contact. I commented to my friend that it was Jean Enerson from KING5 News. My friend didn't really react and I noted that for some reason. But since we had never encountered a media person like that before, I didn't know what a normal reaction would be for her. I found it curious to see Enerson out there because I have thought before about how tv people probably couldn't have a normal life, in terms of how I think of it, or at least, I couldn't. I suspect that people in that kind of job find it satisfying enough, or something, to outweigh the aspects I wouldn't like. And I actually feel like I am living one of their nightmares.

This episode at GL reminded me of something that happened years earlier. I was living in Greenville, SC. It was 1990, 1991 at the latest. I was at a bar with some friends. I don't think my friend had gotten married yet. There was this chick dancing with this other guy but she was coming on to me. Women have come on to me before but this was by far the most aggressive I had seen. I think the guy she was with was cover and she was there to talk to me for some reason. I asked her to dance at one point and she told me she was in the newspaper business. I can't remember if this development occured before or after my friends got married.

If I am remembering the past correctly, I crashed to Earth on June 27, 1994, in “Stargazer” and then shortly later, perhaps on July 8, 1994, I launched into space for to Moon for a 25 year reunion. That may be the basis for that memory I wrote about of going from one extreme to the other.

The in turn got me thinking again about the STP bicycle course I did in July 2001. That month would have been the 25 year reunion of my supposed landing on Mars. And then that in turn makes me wonder just how much mental control I have had over the years. I think I have had control, but I wonder about how much. How many of my activities were “suggested” using some form of mind control? For example, did I finish Ironman CDA on June 27, 2004, because that was the 10 year anniversary of the “Stargazer” crash? Did that even happen? My mind feels like swiss cheese.

The alleged flight of Jacob F. Brodbeck in 1865 has become a Texas legend. After the Wright brothers' controlled airplane flights in 1903, aeronautical progress generally was slow until 1909–10, when European aviation made rapid strides and the United States government acquired its first aircraft. Aerial demonstrations proliferated at sites across America, including Houston, where a Frenchman, Louis Paulhan, made the first airplane flight in the state on February 18, 1910.

1. First Airplane Flight Over Texas Marker

Inscription. The first documented flight of a heavier-than-air flying machine in Texas occurred over this site on February 18, 1910, two weeks before the first military airplane flight by Lt. benjamin Foulois at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. The South Houston flight was part of a land development promotion sponsored by the Western Land Corporation and the Houston "Post."

French aviator Louis Paulhan, on a coast-to-coast flying exhibition tour of America, was commissioned to demonstrate his flying skills. The promoters arranged for special excursion trains to transport spectators to the site from downtown Houston. Headlines in the "Post" proclaimed, "This is the first opportunity for Texans to see a real demonstration of man's ability to fly. Don't fail to come and see demonstrated the greatest invention of the present era."

A crowd of more than 2,500 people gathered on Friday, February 18th, to witness Paulhan's first Texas flight in his Farman biplane. Because of high winds and inclement weather, the aviator was not able to perform some of his most spectacular stunts, but the crowd was thrilled with the aerial display. A second flying exhibition on the following day drew almost 6,000 people.

Isidore Auguste Marie Louis Paulhan, known as Louis Paulhan (19 July 1883 – 10 February 1963), was a pioneering French aviator. He is known for winning the first Daily Mail aviation prize for a flight between London and Manchester in 1910.


Touring America

In January 1910, Paulhan was invited to America to take part in airshows and competitions, at the Los Angeles International Air Meet. He arrived with two Blériot monoplanes and two Farman biplanes. The Wright brothers, though not taking part in the event, were there with their lawyers to prevent Paulhan and Glenn Curtiss from flying. The Wrights claimed that the ailerons on their aircraft infringed patents. Paulhan flew anyway, winning all of the prizes and $19,000. He set up a new altitude record 4,164 feet (1,269 m), beating his own previous record of 1,900 feet (580 m), and a new endurance record of 1hr 49mn 40sec. He gave William Randolph Hearst his first experience of flight. However, he seems to have let down William Boeing, who had been enthused by the new invention of the aeroplane:

While attending the first American Air Meet in Los Angeles, Boeing asked nearly every aviator for a ride, but no one said yes except Paulhan. For three days Boeing waited, but on the 4th day he discovered Paulhan had already left the meet. Possibly, one of the biggest missed opportunities in Paulhan's life was the ride he never gave Boeing.

From Los Angeles, Paulhan moved on to give exhibitions in Salt Lake City, Utah, where the Deseret News headline announced that the "Air King is Here to Fly". He also appeared in New Orleans and made the first aeroplane flight in Texas.

The Wright brothers' case led, on 17 February, to a Federal judge ordering Paulhan to pay $25,000 for every paid display. Furious, he cancelled his American tour and went to New York to challenge the Wright brothers by giving public demonstration flights for free. The dispute rumbled on and in March an agreement was reached whereby he could continue to give flying exhibitions in his Farman biplane on condition that he pay a $6,000 a week bond, pending the outcome of the case. The affair threatened the planned international aviation meet to be hosted by the Aero Club of America, at which the competition for the Gordon Bennett Trophy was to be held. According to Courtlandt Field Bishop, president of the Aero Club of America, all the leading foreign aviators had assured him that they would not appear in the country until the case was decided. If Paulhan won, they would compete; if he lost they did "not care to place themselves within the jurisdiction of American courts." Paulhan eventually left quietly for France.

The Wrights' patent case dragged on for many more years, involving Curtiss and many other pilots and manufacturers.

Maritime Administration (MARAD)

MARAD and the Navy's Inactive Fleet are two separate entities. MARAD is not a Navy facility, but is under the Department of Transportation (DOT).

MARAD maintains the National Defense Reserve Fleet (NDRF) as a ready source of ships for use during national emergencies and assists in fulfilling its traditional role as the nation's fourth arm of defense in logistically supporting the military when needed.

History

The US Maritime Commission was created as an independent agency by the Merchant Marine Act of 29 June 1936, to further develop and maintain a merchant marine for the promotion of US commerce and defense. It was authorized to regulate US ocean commerce, supervise freight and terminal facilities, and administer Government funds to construct and operate commercial ships.

The Commission was the successor agency of the US Shipping Board and the US Shipping Board Bureau of the Department of Commerce. It also took over the property and records of the US Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation, known as the US Shipping Board Merchant Fleet Corporation, after 1927. When the War Shipping Administration was established in 1942, it took over many functions of the Commission, including the operation of the merchant marine and the shipbuilding activity remained under the Commission. These functions were returned to the Commission after 1 September 1946.

The Commission was abolished on 24 May 1950, and its functions were transferred to the Department of Commerce where they were assigned to the Federal Maritime Board and the Maritime Administration (MARAD).

The Maritime Administration was established by Reorganization Plan No. 21, effective 24 May 1950, as one of the successor agencies to the US Maritime Commission. It administers financial programs to develop, promote, and operate the US Merchant Marine; determines services and routes necessary to develop and maintain American foreign commerce and requirements of ships necessary to provide adequate service on such routes; conducts research and development activities in the maritime field; regulates the transfer of US documented vessels to foreign registries; maintains equipment, shipyard facilities, and reserve fleets of Government-owned ships essential for national defense; operates the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY; and administers a Grant-In-Aid Program for State operated maritime academies in California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, and Texas.

This Rainbow bunch was crippled now, or at least badly hurt. It had to be. Popov had fulfilled two missions, he'd helped raise the world's consciousness about terrorism, and thus gotten Global Security its contract with the Sydney Olympics. and then he'd helped sting this new counterterror bunch, hopefully enough to take them out of play. The operation was now fully in place and awaited only the right time for activation.
