Provo, Utah to Host New 2002 Ironman Triathlon

With the announcement, Ironman Utah becomes the western-most Ironman event in the continental United States.
Ironman North America, the city of Provo and the Utah County Convention and Visitors Bureau are pleased to announce the addition of an Ironman event in Provo, Utah to take place on Saturday, June 8, 2002. Provo will play host to Ironman Utah for the next five years.
"We are very excited to be coming to Provo," said Ironman North America President Graham Fraser.
Provo becomes one of only four sites in the continental United States to play host to an Ironman event, joining Lake Placid, N.Y. (Ironman USA Lake Placid), Panama City, Fla. (Ironman Florida) and Madison, WI (Ironman Wisconsin). The addition of Provo provides an Ironman event in four different regions (Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, West) of the United States.

June 8, 2002 Ironman Utah!
On Ironman morning as I battled 6-foot swells in Utah Lake, swallowing lung sized gulps of dark brown Utah Lake water, I feared that perhaps that dream just might become reality.
Unfortunately it WAS reality for fellow Ironman swimmer John Boland from Redondo Beach, California who lost his life in Utah Lake that day. The only swimming fatality in the history of Ironman happened in that Lake that day probably no more than a stone's throw away from me.
I was worried about the mass swim start in the dark, murky water. How long would I be bashed about? Will I lose my goggles? How can I spot other swimmers under the muddy water? - I couldn't even see my hand in front of my face during yesterday's practice swim!

A Limited Duty Officer (LDO) is an officer in the United States Navy or United States Marine Corps who was selected for commissioning based on his/her skill and expertise
They are employed in situations where it is desirable to have an officer with strong, specific technical knowledge and seasoned leadership. Per Title 10, US Code, an LDO is a permanent commissioned officer appointed under section 5589 in a permanent grade above chief warrant officer, W-5, and designated for limited duty.
LDOs perform similar tasks as those of the Warrant Officer (WO), but the formal definition differences are subtle and focus on the degree of authority and level of responsibility, as well as the breadth of required expertise. The term "Limited Duty" refers not to an LDO's authority, but rather the LDO's career progression and restrictions. Historically an LDO, prior to World War II, could only advance as far as lieutenant. Later an LDO could be promoted to commander and, in the Marine Corps, the senior LDO rank is Lieutenant Colonel. In the 1990s the ceiling in most U.S. Navy communities was raised to captain.
Command
Unlike their Unrestricted Line Officer (URL) brethren, most LDOs cannot aspire to command a major warship, combat aviation squadron, or auxiliary vessel, although for a select few in the right communities this is now a possibility. In the U.S. Marine Corps, some Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) permit LDOs to be commanding officers. Many LDOs have qualified for command ashore of certain shore activities, ranging from small activities such as Navy Operational Support Centers (formerly "Naval Reserve Centers") at the Lieutenant Commander and Commander level, to large activities such as the Naval Air Technical Training Center at the Captain level.[citation needed] In other words, LDOs may succeed to command activities which have a primary function corresponding to the MOS of the officer concerned.
LDOs will only be assigned to billets that are in their MOS and that are designated as LDO billets. LDOs may not be assigned to billets designated for unrestricted officers. This does not preclude an LDO from being assigned additional duties as deemed appropriate, including Joint duty.
In the U.S. Marine Corps, only warrant officers (WOs) can become LDOs. LDOs are experts and leaders in the MOS from which they came. LDOs are considered more the officer and less the technician than the WO. In the Marine Corps, WOs with less than 20 years of active duty service are eligible for the LDO program. This program is managed within the Recruiting Command because it is an accession board not a promotion board.
In the U.S. Navy, LDOs and WOs are former enlisted technicians (petty officers or chiefs). They are experts and leaders in the technical specialty enlisted rates from which they came. In the Navy, First Class Petty Officers and Chief Petty Officers in the Navy with less than 20 years of service are eligible for the LDO program, while chiefs with 16 or more years of service, senior chief and master chiefs usually are selected in the WO program.

This is that hotel I stayed at when I went to Ironman Utah 2002. I can't remember the name but I found it on the map because I can remember geographical features of the area, such as that creek next to it. I remember marveling that I picked a hotel that had a bicycling trail right next to it without even realizing it. Looking at the map, the hotel is right off the Interstate 15 Exit 304. The road that runs south is labeled S 500 W at that point before it changes to Riverside Dr

After I got down to Provo for Ironman Utah 2002, scheduled for June 8th, I was unimpressed with their choice of having us swim in that lake.
after I walked down to the lake to survey the swim course, I wondered if Osama bin Laden was the race director. I commented something about how when they start an invasion, they go after the strongest people first. I am wondering today if, in the course of my professional military duties, I had been developing tactics of that very nature against military adversaries of the U.S. before my memory was blanked. I have been thinking that I was supposed to be awakened from this "hibernation" a long time ago.

She was going to college in Provo and I described being out there the previous year for Ironman Utah. She told me that people say to stay out of that lake now because of "dead bodies" in it. I saw her later and she was far ahead of me in the race. I remember also thinking that people were watching me, beyond the normal spectating. I passed by a group of people and heard someone say "there he is." The next day at work, the director my group told me she had been there to watch the finish of the race. She described how she had accidently showed up or something like that, but I wasn't buying it. A cute woman at work that day was wearing clothes that looked suspicously similar to what I had wore for the race.
I think this was the 4th of 5 marathons I finished in a year period. I'm not sure of exact dates offhand but between Dec 2002 and Dec 2003, I completed 5 marathons, 2 sprint triathlons, and I trained for and participated in Ironman CDA, but I dropped out at the midpoint, completing the 2.4 mile swim and then 56 miles of the bike. I had developed serious cramps in my legs during the swim and a cramp in my lower leg was very painful. It was also extremely hot and I let myself get dehydrated. I could have probably taken some advil to relieve the pain in my leg, but being so dehydrated, I was worried about taking anything. I dropped out of the race and didn't really start regretting it until about 3 or days later, so that was an indication to me that I should have dropped out. If I had started regretting it right away, then I probably could have kept going on and at least finished the bike course.

A good thing that powerful storm decided to wreck the Ironman Utah swim course just minutes before the swim competition was to start. If not for that storm I would have proceeded out to the middle of that muddy lake and who knows what was lurking under the water waiting for me to get out there a mile from shore.

George Everette "Bud" Day (born February 24, 1925) is a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel and Command Pilot who served during the Vietnam War, to include five years and seven months as a Prisoner of War in North Vietnam. He is often cited as being the most decorated U.S. service member since General Douglas MacArthur, having received some seventy decorations, a majority for actions in combat. Day is a recipient of the Medal of Honor.
Anticipating retirement in 1968 and now a major, Day volunteered for a tour in Vietnam and was assigned to the 31st Tactical Fighter Wing at Tuy Hoa Air Base in April 1967. At that time he, had more than 5,000 flying hours, with 4,500 of them in fighters. On June 25, 1967, with extensive previous service flying two tours in F-100s, Major Day was made the first commander of Detachment 1, 416th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 37th Tactical Fighter Wing based at Phu Cat Air Base. Under the project name "Commando Sabre", twin-seat USAF F-100Fs were evaluated as a Fast Forward Air Control ("Fast FAC") aircraft in high threat areas, given that F-4 Phantom II aircraft were in high demand for strike and Combat Air Patrol (CAP) roles. Using the call sign Misty, the name of Day's favorite song, his detachment of four two-seat F-100Fs and 16 pilots became pioneer "Fast FACs" (Forward Air Controllers) over Laos and North Vietnam. All Misty FAC crews were volunteers with at least 100 combat missions in Vietnam and 1,000 minimum flight hours.
