The confessed killing of two little boys by their mother in Union, S.C., horrified the nation last week.
The incident may also have terrified youngsters across the country.
"Is Mommy going to kill me?" some children reportedly have been asking teachers, nannies, parents and older siblings in the wake of the deaths.
Susan V. Smith, 23, confessed last week to killing her sons, Michael, 3, and Alexander, 14 months, by plunging her car, with the boys still buckled in their safety seats, into a lake.
She reported her boys missing on Oct. 25 and for several days claimed that a carjacker had abducted them. Her televised pleas for their safe return anguished hearts and souls across America and beyond.
For decades, parents have cautioned children to be wary of strangers bearing gifts. But how do you explain to small children that sometimes even mothers harm their own children?

The Seattle Seahawks are a professional American football team organized in 1976 and based in Seattle, Washington, USA. This article details the history of the Seattle Seahawks American Football Club.
The team took the field for the first time on August 1, 1976 in a pre-season game against the San Francisco 49ers in the then brand new Kingdome.
1996-98:Paul Allen takes over
In January 1996, Seahawks owner Ken Behring announced that he was moving the franchise to Los Angeles, where the team would play at Anaheim Stadium. Behring claimed safety concerns (specifically the building's structural integrity in the event of an earthquake) as his reason for breaking the team's lease with King County. However, seismologists found Behring's claims to be unproven. Also, the Los Angeles area is even more earthquake-prone than Seattle. Although Behring moved the team's operations to Anaheim, his plans for a full move were scuttled when lawyers discovered that the Seahawks were locked into the Kingdome through 2005. Having seen his effort to permanently relocate the franchise thwarted, Behring decided to sell. A potential buyer was found in Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen who reached an agreement to buy the club but only if a new stadium would be built. After funding a special state-wide election for stadium financing, a new stadium for the Seahawks was passed and Allen purchased the team.

Gunfighter Chuka (Rod Taylor) is stranded in an isolated U.S. Army fort with Mexican stagecoach passengers Senora Veronica Kleitz (Luciana Paluzzi) and her niece Senorita Helena Chavez (Victoria Vetri[4]). The fort's commander, Colonel Stuart Valois (John Mills), is worried that the Arapahoes may have ambushed his overdue patrol and refuses to allow the civilians to leave. He sends out his scout Lou Trent (James Whitmore) to reconnoiter, but his horse returns without him.
Meanwhile, it is revealed that nearly everyone in the fort has a past they would rather forget. Before he turned to killing men for money, Chuka was in love with Kleitz, but because he was only a lowly hired hand on her wealthy father's ranch, she dutifully married a man selected by her father from their own social class. The soldiers are the dregs of the army. Valois was cashiered from the British Army for suspected cowardice for being drunk when his command was attacked. His second in command, Major Benson (Louis Hayward) is a card cheat, while Lieutenant Daly was acquitted of the charge of treason. Only Sergeant Otto Hansbach (Ernest Borgnine) is a first-rate soldier; he had served with then British Captain Valois in the Sudan and owes his life to Valois.
Chuka tries to renew the relationship with Kleitz, now a widow, but she tells him it is too late. He offers to take the two women to safety, but by the time Kleitz asks him to save her niece, the fort is under siege.
Chuka agrees (for $200) to sneak out and scout the enemy for Valois; in the process, he rescues Trent. Chuka then pleads with Valois to abandon the fort, since Hanu (Marco Lopez), the Arapahoe leader, only wants the supplies, but Valois is determined to find out if he really is a coward or not, even though he is hopelessly outnumbered. He has to put down an attempted mutiny, killing the ringleader Spivey (Michael Cole). That night, as they wait for the impending attack, Kleitz goes to Chuka, and they make love.
The next day, the Indians attack. Kleitz is killed early on, as is Valois; with his last words, the colonel mourns the fact that he was struck down too soon, never to learn if he was a coward. With nearly everyone else dead and himself seriously wounded, Chuka hides with Helena Chavez. The victorious Arapahoes take the supplies and leave. When an army detachment comes to investigate, they find a grave near where Veronica Kleitz died. Chuka and Chavez are nowhere to be found.
