Bill Gates set a conference abuzz when he opened a jar of mosquitoes onstage to make a point about malaria prevention.
"There's no reason only poor people should have the experience," the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft said at the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference Wednesday in Long Beach.
Audience members including technology leaders laughed nervously as the insects swarmed across the auditorium. Gates assured them that the bugs were not carrying malaria.

Anders: So our best guess puts the launch keys somewhere in the detention center. Just keep to the main streets. Everybody'll think you're just a regular skinjob and they'll avoid you. But there's a lot of people out there looking to gut an unwary Cylon going for a stroll, so don't let anybody get close enough to stick a knife in you.
Sharon: All right. Thanks for the concern. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Anders: How are you gonna find those launch keys?
Sharon: When I get inside and hook into the data stream, it'll feed me the location. Now, once I get the keys, you need to distribute them to the pilots who can fly those ships out of here.

Nike takes sole blame for shoe falling apart
BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Nike took the blame Monday for Quincy Watts' shoe falling apart during the 400-meter finals of last month's World Championships.
"We really don't have any excuses for that," company general manager Tom Clarke told shareholders at their annual meeting.
Watts, the 1992 Olympic gold medalist, finished fourth in the World Championships after the sole fell off his shoe halfway through the race Aug. 17 in Stuttgart, Germany.
Nike first said the glue may have failed because the shoe was kept at too warm a temperature. Officials now say the fault lay with the shoe company.
