Gates family adds baby girl
SEATTLE — Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, are parents for the third time.
Phoebe Adelle Gates was born Saturday at Overlake Hospital Medical Center in Bellevue. The birth was announced yesterday.

Gates' Wedding News: `Fastest E-Mail Ever At Microsoft' -- Word Gets Out By Computer, Of Course

With Bill Gates' engagement to a Microsoft marketing manager, the era of the paperless wedding announcement has arrived.
"It was the fastest E-mail ever at Microsoft," said one employee who received word midmorning that Gates, a 37-year-old Harvard dropout, had over the weekend proposed to Melinda French
Gates, whose fortune is estimated at more than $7 billion, told a few friends about the proposal on Monday. French sent an electronic-mail message to an associate at Microsoft, which was copied and sent to other employees, including entire departments. Computer E-mail can be "broadcast" to scores and even hundreds of recipients at once.
Mary Gates, the software chief's mother and a member of the University of Washington board of regents, declined to talk about her son's engagement. But she said last year in an interview that she believed the two made a good couple and thought it was about time her son got married.
"My mother keeps pushing, so I'd have to believe she'd be the first to know," said Gates' older sister, Kristi, in an interview last year. "She says, `Are you going to get Melinda a ring for Christmas?' "
Aside from her marketing positions at Microsoft, French has kept a purposely low profile, especially regarding her relationship with Gates. The two have dated since shortly after French's arrival at Microsoft in 1987.
Gates and French have been sighted at restaurants, movie theaters, Microsoft functions and social gatherings in Seattle, but have scrupulously avoided computer-industry events together. In an interview last year, French asked not to be identified because it could hamper her ability to work with Microsoft vendors.
French is a skier and runner who once ran in Seattle's Emerald City Marathon.
"She's attractive, articulate and brainy," said a former co-worker. One of the keys to the couple's relationship is that "Melinda stood up for herself, insisting he treat her right and not be a jerk about things," the co-worker said.
Their relationship was on-and-off over the past four years and went through at least one long separation. But the two have been seen together often over the past year. When Gates received the National Medal of Technology from President Bush last June, French was at the Rose Garden ceremony.

§ 1962. Prohibited activities
(a) It shall be unlawful for any person who has received any income derived, directly or indirectly, from a pattern of racketeering activity or through collection of an unlawful debt in which such person has participated as a principal within the meaning of section 2, title 18, United States Code, to use or invest, directly or indirectly, any part of such income, or the proceeds of such income, in acquisition of any interest in, or the establishment or operation of, any enterprise which is engaged in, or the activities of which affect, interstate or foreign commerce.

Whoever violates any provision of section 1962 of this chapter shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years (or for life if the violation is based on a racketeering activity for which the maximum penalty includes life imprisonment), or both, and shall forfeit to the United States, irrespective of any provision of State law—
(1) any interest the person has acquired or maintained in violation of section 1962;
(2) any—
(A) interest in;
(B) security of;
(C) claim against; or
(D) property or contractual right of any kind affording a source of influence over;
any enterprise which the person has established, operated, controlled, conducted, or participated in the conduct of, in violation of section 1962; and
(3) any property constituting, or derived from, any proceeds which the person obtained, directly or indirectly, from racketeering activity or unlawful debt collection in violation of section 1962.

Mary Gates, one of Seattle's most prominent civic figures and the mother of Microsoft magnate Bill Gates, died at her Laurelhurst home early this morning
Last night, the UW Alumni Association honored Mrs. Gates with its annual recognition award. Her husband and three children attended the ceremony on the UW campus and accepted the award in her behalf.
