LUFKIN - Finding the piece of debris that might give clues to why the space shuttle Columbia broke apart on re-entry has been described by one NASA official as like "looking for a needle in a haystack."
Monday, the haystack got bigger.
While lawmen and volunteers in several East Texas counties were beating the piney woods and lake shores for more remnants of Columbia, the size of the "debris field" was enlarged to take in a portion of West Texas and a longer stretch of Louisiana.
Authorities did report a major find Monday. A man found the shuttle's nose cone buried about six feet in the ground on his land just outside the town of Hemphill. The cone was said to be in good shape and searchers planned to excavate it today.
Most of the significant debris and body parts apparently have been found between Nacogdoches and the Sabine River, but some fragments may be found as far east as the New Orleans suburbs and west of the point over Dallas-Fort Worth where the shuttle began to disintegrate.

Battle of Mogadishu (1993)
The Battle of Mogadishu (also referred to as the Battle of the Black Sea, and Black Hawk Down in popular culture) or for Somalis: the Day of the Rangers (Somali: Maalintii Rangers) was part of Operation Gothic Serpent and was fought on October 3 and 4, 1993, in Mogadishu, Somalia, between forces of the United States supported by UNOSOM II and Somali militia fighters loyal to president to be Mohamed Farrah Aidid who had support from armed civilian fighters.
On October 3, 1993, Task Force Ranger, U.S. Special Operations Forces composed mainly of Bravo Company 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (better known as “Delta Force”) operators, and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) (“The Night Stalkers”), attempted to capture Aidid's foreign minister Omar Salad Elmi and his top political advisor, Mohamed Hassan Awale.
The plan was that Delta Force operators would assault the target building (using MH-6 Little Bird helicopters) and secure the targets inside the building while four Ranger chalks (under the command of Capt. Michael D. Steele) would fast rope down from hovering MH-60L Black Hawk helicopters. The Rangers would then create a four-corner defensive perimeter around the target building while a column of nine Humvees and three five-ton trucks (under the command of Lt. Col. Danny McKnight) would arrive at the target building to take the entire assault team and their prisoners back to base. The entire operation was estimated to take no longer than 30 minutes.
The ground-extraction convoy was supposed to reach the captive targets a few minutes after the beginning of the operation. However, it ran into delays. Somali citizens and local militia formed barricades along the streets of Mogadishu with rocks and burning tires, blocking the convoy from reaching the Rangers and their captives. Aidid militiamen with megaphones shouting, "Kasoobaxa guryaha oo iska celsa cadowga!" ("Come out and defend your homes!").

Horror star Boris Karloff had grown weary and fearful of his Frankenstein Creature typecast and abandoned the role. Glenn was the perfect replacement for the job and made his monstrous debut with House of Frankenstein (1944), quickly followed by House of Dracula (1945). It was he who played the Creature in the cult horror/comedy classic Bud Abbott Lou Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) as part of the monstrous trio of Bela Lugosi's Dracula and Lon Chaney Jr.'s Wolf Man.
As the "B" western started faded off into the sunset in the 1950s, Strange moseyed on over to TV work, capping off his career with a steady (12 years) role as Sam the bartender on the classic "Gunsmoke" (1955) series
He played Butch Cavendish, the chief nemesis of the Lone Ranger, in "The Lone Ranger" (1949).

Glenn Strange (August 16, 1899 – September 20, 1973) was an American actor who appeared mostly in Western films. He is best known for playing the Frankenstein Monster in three Universal films during the 1940s and for his role as Sam Noonan, the bartender on CBS's Gunsmoke television series.
Strange procured his first motion picture role in 1932 and literally appeared in hundreds of films during his lifetime. In 1949, he portrayed Butch Cavendish, who wiped out all of the Texas Rangers, except one, the role of Clayton Moore in The Lone Ranger.

VF-142 Ghostriders was a US Navy fighter squadron established on 24 August 1948 as VF-193. It was renamed VF-142 on 15 October 1963, and disestablished on 30 April 1995.
Fighter Squadron 193 (VF-193) was commissioned on 24 August 1948 and assigned to Carrier Air Group Nineteen. The squadron was equipped with the Vought F4U-4 Corsair.
In 1963, VF-193 transitioned to the McDonnell F-4B Phantom II. On 15 October 1963 the squadron was re-designated VF-142.
In 1974, the Ghostriders deployed to the Mediterranean with the USS America (CV-66) and after their return to NAS Miramar they transitioned to the F-14 Tomcat.
After a brief break that followed their 6 month deployment, the Ghostriders returned to full speed preparing for their transition to the USS George Washington (CVN-73). The newest carrier in the fleet welcomed CVW-7 in the early fall of 1992

Fighter Squadron 142 (VF-142) was established on 24 August 1948 at NAS Alameda, California, as VF-193.
VF-193 moved to NAS Miramar, California, and was redesignated VF-142 on 15 October 1963. After upgrading to the F-4B Phantom II fighter, VF-142 deployed to WestPac on board the USS Constellation (CVA-64), flying retaliatory sorties over North Vietnam in August 1964 in response to the Tonkin Gulf Incident.
By 1973, the Ghostriders had deployed six more times to the Tonkin Gulf, flying strikes in F-4Bs and later F-4Js from the USS Ranger (CVA-61), the Constellation, and the USS Enterprise (CVAN-65).
VF-142 made four more Mediterranean deployments on board the Dwight D. Eisenhower before upgrading to the F-14A+ (later F-14B). The Ghostriders were flying from the carrier in August 1990—when Iraq invaded Kuwait—and supported Operation Desert Shield from the Red Sea.
After a subsequent Indian Ocean deployment on board the Dwight D. Eisenhower, VF-142 deployed on board the USS George Washington (CVN-73) in May 1994 for its last deployment, which took the Ghostriders over Bosnia and Iraq in support of Operations Deny Flight and Southern Watch, respectively.
VF-142 was disestablished on 30 April 1995.

I have always thought it was the navy's Battle "E" ribbon, but the idea formed lately that it may be a Purple Heart actually. The pip device on the ribbon made sense as the "E" device that I remember being used on the Battle "E." But today I looked it up and I don't see a Battle "E" ribbon. Maybe they have discontinued it since it was active in the '80s or maybe that really was a Purple Heart he was wearing. The pip is actually a star device to represent that he has two of the medals. The closest active ribbon I see the navy currently has is called the Navy "E" Ribbon. It looks similar to the Purple Heart except for the colors on the edges and I remember from Top Gun that he was wearing a ribbon that was mostly blue with white stripes on each end.
