BOB HERBOLD (Chief Operating Officer, Microsoft): Thank you very much for attending. And I'd like to formally welcome Secretary of Defense William Cohen. It's really a treat to have you here on campus talking about subjects of common interest and the impact technology is having not only in the military but on a global basis.
There are a few other people in the room I want to acknowledge. First of all, we have several Army IT personnel. If they could raise their hands. (Applause.) We won't clap for this bunch, but we also have a lot of Microsoft employees here -- (Laughter) -- and thank you very much for being here. The Army can clap for them! (Laughter.)
This also coincides with the Third Annual Army Conference where we get together to compare notes as to how Microsoft is doing from the standpoint of helping the Army implement technology, what kinds of things we should be paying attention to in order to improve the capabilities of our products so that they can do a better job of doing what the Army has to do. It's a ritual that has become very valuable for both organizations, and one that we truly value.
With that, I will turn it over to Microsoft's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Bill Gates.

BILL GATES (Chairman and CEO, Microsoft): Thanks, Bob. It's a great opportunity to come together and have a chance to thank what is our biggest customer in the world, the U.S. Department of Defense. You know, we often talk about how we've got 200,000 exchange seats at General Electric and 200,000 at Boeing. But both of those are quite a bit smaller than the over 300,000 that we've got at Department of Defense.
When you think of the challenge that the DOD faces in terms of worldwide coordination and critical information that needs to be kept secure, it really is the most interesting application of our software technology that there could possibly be. Over the years we've had a very strong partnership and are doing a lot of new things together.
I think it's fair to say the arrival of the PC as a standard was an incredible benefit for DOD, because in the past, their procurement cycles had been very long. If a certain system was procured, then if you wanted to have upwards compatibility, you didn't have the ability to choose between different hardware vendors. In the early days of the PC market we really started to see the impact of competition when DOD went out for very large, high volume bids. Dozens of people bidding prices that were really quite amazing, and that's spread throughout the market. And so today the base of PCs out there is pretty incredible.
Challenges we're working on together include how to get all those PCs networked together in the right way. DOD has all the challenges and opportunities of a very large enterprise, and so coordinating those activities, administering those activities, it really is a challenge that pushes our software to the limit. And it's fantastic for us to have this opportunity to find out from the people at the DOD where that's working, where it's not working for them, and how we can carry that forward.
Now, the Department of Defense is in a fascinating period in terms of the challenges ahead. You have the traditional challenges. And now we also have to think about how this information infrastructure, that not only the government but business depends on, could that come under attack?

It kept getting worse.
The horror arrived in episodic bursts of chilling disbelief, signified first by trembling floors, sharp eruptions, cracked windows. There was the actual unfathomable realization of a gaping, flaming hole in first one of the tall towers, and then the same thing all over again in its twin. There was the merciless sight of bodies helplessly tumbling out, some of them in flames.
Finally, the mighty towers themselves were reduced to nothing. Dense plumes of smoke raced through the downtown avenues, coursing between the buildings, shaped like tornadoes on their sides.
Every sound was cause for alarm. A plane appeared overhead. Was another one coming? No, it was a fighter jet. But was it friend or enemy? People scrambled for their lives, but they didn't know where to go. Should they go north, south, east, west? Stay outside, go indoors? People hid beneath cars and each other. Some contemplated jumping into the river.
For those trying to flee the very epicenter of the collapsing World Trade Center towers, the most horrid thought of all finally dawned on them: nowhere was safe.

The Titan Launch Vehicle
First developed as an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the Titan family of launch vehicles was born in October 1955 when the U.S. Air Force awarded a contract to the Martin Company (which evolved into Martin Marietta and later Lockheed Martin) to build a second ICBM to supplement the still-untested Atlas missile. § 2331. Definitions
As used in this chapter—
(1) the term “international terrorism” means activities that—
(A) involve violent acts or acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State, or that would be a criminal violation if committed within the jurisdiction of the United States or
of any State;
(B) appear to be intended—
(i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;
(ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or
(iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and
(C) occur primarily outside the territorial jurisdiction of the United States, or transcend national boundaries in terms of the means by which they are accomplished, the persons they appear intended to intimidate or coerce, or the locale
in which their perpetrators operate or seek asylum;
(2) the term “national of the United States” has the meaning given such term in section 101(a)(22) of the Immigration and Nationality Act;
(3) the term “person” means any individual or entity capable of holding a legal or beneficial interest in property;
(4) the term “act of war” means any act occurring in the course of—
(A) declared war;
(B) armed conflict, whether or not war has been declared, between two or more nations; or
(C) armed conflict between military forces of any origin; and
(5) the term “domestic terrorism” means activities that—
(A) involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State;
(B) appear to be intended—
(i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;
(ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or
(iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and
(C) occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States.

John Kenneth Macalister
John Kenneth Macalister (July 19, 1914, Guelph, Ontario, Canada - September 14, 1944, Buchenwald) was a Canadian hero of World War II.
Together with fellow Canadian, Frank Pickersgill, Ken Macalister was parachuted into occupied France on June 20, 1943 to work as wireless operator for the "Archdeacon" network in the Ardennes area. They were met by agent Yvonne Rudellat, but were stopped by the Gestapo who had been tipped by an informer. Some believe that the Germans recognized him as an agent by virtue of his rather poor French accent. Although they tried to get away, shots were fired and Rudellat was hit causing the car to crash. They were taken to Fresnes prison where they were interrogated and tortured repeatedly. Macalister steadfastly refused to reveal his security checks to the Germans who had his codes and were anxious to send misleading messages back to the SOE's London headquarters. Macalister gave his interrogators nothing and when his captors tried to send messages, SOE recognized them as fake.
Unable to get anything of value from him, the security forces shipped Macalister, along with Frank Pickersgill and Roméo Sabourin to Buchenwald concentration camp on August 27, 1944. They were known as the Robert Benoist group, executed at Buchenwald on September 14, 1944.

U of T grads John Kenneth Macalister and Frank Pickersgill trained as spies during the Second World War. An unlucky break brought their lives to a tragic end

“Set Europe ablaze,” instructed Winston Churchill. After a hasty training in spy-craft, the French-speaking Macalister was parachuted into the Loire Valley in 1943. Unfortunately, before he could set his little bit of the continent on fire, the Gestapo captured and imprisoned him. In the war’s final days, a panicked Hitler ordered the execution of captive spies, such as Macalister, to prevent them from describing their appalling treatment. After hanging Macalister and 15 other captives in the bowels of Buchenwald – with piano wire attached to meat-hooks – the SS guards cremated the remains. It was Hitler’s aim to keep their fates a secret. In Macalister’s case, the führer and his minions failed. The Nazis disposed of his body, but they couldn’t destroy his story.
At the top of the J.K. Macalister file the University of Toronto Archives is a clipping from an April 1945 edition of the Guelph Mercury – one which, despite its understated language, wields a wallop. “Notification has been received from the British War Office by A.M. Macalister, editor of The Mercury, and Mrs. Macalister… [residing on Metcalfe Street], of the death of their son Capt. John Kenneth Macalister on September 14, 1944. The parents had been notified previously that their only son had been missing in June.”

The American Beauty Association is about to hold its annual trade show in New York City and songwriter "Tiny" Lewis (Billy Gilbert) has just sold a song to Ina Ray Hutton ('Ina Ray Hutton'), the leader of an all-girl band headlining the show. Lewis shares an apartment with Bradley Miller ('Ross Hunter' ) and Michele (Fritz Feld), an artist, and Miller has just invented a non-staining lipstick called "Rosebud." Preparing to get a booth at the show, Miller is told by J. Webster Hackett (Alan Mowbray), a very devious "Cosmetics King,", intent on selling a big lipstick order to buyer Edgar Pomeroy (Thurston Hall), that it will cost him a $1000 to join the association and get a booth, which is about $999 more than Miller and his roomies have between them. But Miller's beauty-parlor girl friend, Janet Wilson (Ann Savage), meets factory-owner P. G. Grimble (Hugh Herbert), and money is soon no issue.

John Kenneth Macalister (July 19, 1914, Guelph, Ontario, Canada - September 14, 1944, Buchenwald) was a Canadian hero of World War II.
Ken Macalister graduated the Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute (GCVI) and from the University of Toronto, then as a Rhodes Scholar studied at Oxford University. He was expanding his education further at the Institute of Corporate Law in Paris, France when World War II began in 1939. When he took the bar exam, Macalister placed first among over 150 candidates in the British Empire. Macalister tried to join the infantry but his eyesight was such that he needed thick glasses and as such could not be placed on active duty. However, fluent in the French language, Macalister volunteered for the Special Operations Executive (SOE) F Section where as an agent in France, his thick glasses would actually add to his disguise.
Together with fellow Canadian, Frank Pickersgill, Ken Macalister was parachuted into occupied France on June 20, 1943 to work as wireless operator for the "Archdeacon" network in the Ardennes area.
Captain Ken Macalister is honored on the Brookwood Memorial, Surrey in Brookwood, Surrey, England and as one of the SOE agents

I've been thinking about that time my car was stolen too. I think that was right after the Nisqually earthquake because it was right before my mother came to stay with me for a few days. I think she was worried after the earthquake. But I had been wondering if people had been taking my car out and driving it around at night. I don't know why I thought that, but I started suspecting it as far back as when I was at Oakwood. I don't think I really seriously considered it as a possibility until it was stolen. Or they tried to steal it. It had stopped running a few weeks earlier and it looks like they rolled it down to the bottom level of the garage trying to get it started. I called the Bellevue police and an officer came out to my apartment. But he didn't even look around in the garage. It turned out that it sat on the bottom level for about 3 days with the hood up partially blocking the entrance. I called the police back and they tried to take prints but the garage was very dusty and there was too much dust on it to get prints. I only had liability insurance on it so everything I spent on it was lost.
