A Memory Lapse
For Maureen Reagan, the journey began in late 1993 with her first "click of awareness" that something had gone awry in her father's mind, she wrote in a January 2000 essay for Newsweek magazine.
She and her father, former President Ronald Reagan, were talking about one of his movies, the 1954 drama Prisoner of War.
"For years he had told me about the gruesome tortures inflicted on American prisoners by the North Koreans," she wrote. "But now he seemed to be hearing me tell the stories for the first time. Finally he looked at me and said, 'Mermie, I have no recollection of making that movie.' "
"No actor ever forgets a role," she wrote, "so I should have realized something was wrong."
A few months later, she wrote, her father complained to his doctor about feeling disoriented in hotel rooms. In August 1994, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and on Nov. 5 of that year he released a brief statement about his illness, in hopes of promoting "greater awareness of this condition."
Warning Signs
Although the early symptoms of Alzheimer's vary, Thies said, what Maureen Reagan described is a common pattern: "not remembering things that had a relatively high profile in your life, and certainly disorientation in strange places."

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - The missile cruiser USS Princeton, badly damaged by a mine in the northern Persian Gulf, has been pulled out of action and sent to a gulf port for assessment, U.S. military officials said today.
Discussing the mine blasts that damaged the U.S. warships, he said what was apparently an unusually sophisticated mine damaged the rudder and rudder shaft of the billion-dollar Princeton. The blast injured three crewmen and lifted the vessel party out of the water.
The USS Tripoli, meanwhile, remained on duty after patching a 16-by-20-foot hole in its hull blown by a cruder mine 2 1/2 hours earlier and 10 miles away.
Neal said no minesweepers had cleared the area where the explosions occurred because it was believed to have been relatively free of mines. He said the allies would "continue an aggressive countermine campaign."
The two explosions appeared to jeopardize any plans for an amphibious landing by the Marine task force positioned off the Kuwait coast - at least in the area where the ships were operating.
The Tripoli, an 18,000-ton helicopter assault carrier, is serving as flagship for a newly mounted mine-clearing operation in the area. The 2-year-old Princeton had been on anti-aircraft surveillance duty.
There were varying reports on the extent of damage to the 570-foot Princeton.
Military officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was one report that the hull was damaged in the middle, with cracks in the superstructure above the main deck.
They did not say to which gulf port the Princeton had headed for repairs.
A dozen mine sweepers from the U.S., Saudi and European navies are at work to clear out the thousands of mines the Iraqis are believed to have sown in coastal waters to deter any landing by the 15,000 Marines stationed aboard about 30 ships in the gulf.
The Marines are prepared to strike at Kuwaiti beaches by helicopter and assault boat as part of the anticipated ground offensive.
U.S. officials, however, were worried by the explosions, especially because the Princeton appeared to have been damaged by a so-called "influence mine" - a device the Iraqis were known to possess but had never before used.

SEAMAN Apprentice Andrew Nemeth was standing in the morning chow line when, he remembered, suddenly "being up in the air, falling down and having fuel spray over me." The explosion that rocked his ship left him stunned and bleeding from a head wound. The only way the 19-year-old made it out of the smoke-filled mess hall and to medical treatment was because he had been trained to find his way out of the ship blindfolded.
Many of his shipmates would not be so lucky.
Gunner's Mate Second Class Edgar B. Beck realized, not long after sunrise, that his ship was going down and trying to make his way to his battle station was futile. He decided to concentrate on helping shipmates through a shell hoist, their only escape route before the ship capsized and anybody remaining would be crushed by the 1,200-pound artillery shells.
Just after his ship heeled over, came a nearby tremendous blast that, in a single frightful instant, snuffed out 1,000 lives.
The two American sailors escaped a surprise attack.
But, what separates Beck and Nemeth is half a world and more than half a lifetime.
Beck was aboard the USS Oklahoma. It was early Sunday morning, Dec. 7, 1941. Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Nemeth was aboard the USS Cole. It was late morning, Oct. 12, 2000. Aden, Yemen.
And, as we approach the anniversary of the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, it's worth pondering things that unite these two men and their comrades in harm's way.
The Cole terrorist attack, which claimed 17 American lives, was, of course, not nearly on the scale of the Pearl Harbor attack that sent so many to their deaths and sent the nation into a global war.
But they were both sudden and deadly reminders to too-complacent Americans that the world is a dangerous place, often aflame with anti-American sentiment and the potential for war.
Our military terms it today "asymmetrical warfare," and some have suggested the shadowy terrorist war that stalks us now is the price we pay for being the world's only superpower.
Here, too, are dual lessons. Our nation was unprepared for World War II. We've spent most of the time since that war ended preparing ourselves to defeat a huge Soviet menace on a broad global front. In recent years, the emphasis has been on our ability to fight on two major fronts simultaneously. But, we're barely under way in understanding and coming to grips with the nature of this newest threat.
Both the aftermath of Pearl Harbor and of the Cole attack are also reminders of the patriotism, dedication and honor of men and women who put on the uniform.
As the aging veterans of World War II now so quickly pass from among us, it more important than ever to recall the horror that hit us so hard in 1941, that "date which will live in infamy," and their heroic responses in the aftermath. Too many know Pearl Jam but not Pearl Harbor.
As we continue to wrangle with ourselves over presidential politics and grow ever more polarized and embittered with one another here at home, it's also important to remember how the sailors on the Cole responded together to save their ship and shipmates just a few short weeks ago.

The HY-2 Haiying, known in Western media as the Silkworm missile, is an anti-ship series. The missile is also designated as C-201.
It is based on Shang You (SY), meaning Upstream anti-ship missile, which in turn, was based on the Russian P-15 Termit missile. The missile looks almost identical to the Shang You (SY) anti-ship missile, and has similar performance. It has a maximum range of 95 km, with a 513 kilogram payload.
It is 7.3 meters long, has a diameter of .75 meters and weights 3,000kg. Its wingspan is 2.4 meters and has a max range of around 100 kilometers. An American-registered tanker was hit by a missile, apparently Iranian, in Kuwaiti waters this morning, Kuwaiti and American officials said.
It was the first direct attack on a merchant ship under the protection of the growing American fleet in the Persian Gulf. An American-escorted tanker was damaged by a mine in July.
The tanker hit today, the Sea Isle City, was in Kuwaiti territorial waters and not under American escort when she was hit.
In Washington, Defense Department officials said Kuwait had tracked the missile from the Iranian-held Fao Peninsula in Iraq and had tried to shoot it down with a missile of its own.
The Sea Isle City is one of 11 Kuwaiti ships flying the American flag under an agreement to gain American military protection. She was hit as she rode at anchor five miles off the port of Shuaiba, where she was to berth and take on cargo. The missile was reported to have struck the starboard crew quarters.
The United States has committed itself to protecting these re-registered vessels while in international shipping lanes. The American escorts end when the convoys reach Kuwaiti territorial waters, 12 miles offshore.
Among the wounded crew members was the 50-year-old American master, John Hunt. Seven of the wounded were reported in serious condition, requiring surgery in hospitals in Kuwait.
The attack came a day after a missile hit the American-owned supertanker Sungari off Kuwait's main oil port of Al Ahmadi; the Sungari flies the Liberian flag.
A spokesman said the Defense Department had information that Thursday's missile was a Chinese-made Silkworm fired from the Fao Peninsula, which was captured by Iran from Iraq in 1986. Kuwaiti officials said today's missile was the same type.
The Sea Isle City, an 81,283-ton tanker for refined oil products, had arrived off Kuwait on Tuesday with three other re-registered Kuwaiti tankers in the eleventh convoy escorted through the gulf by United States Navy warships.

On October 3, 1993, Task Force Ranger, U.S. Special Operations Forces composed mainly of Bravo Company 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (better known as “Delta Force”) operators, and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) (“The Night Stalkers”), attempted to capture Aidid's foreign minister Omar Salad Elmi and his top political advisor, Mohamed Hassan Awale.
The plan was that Delta Force operators would assault the target building (using MH-6 Little Bird helicopters) and secure the targets inside the building while four Ranger chalks (under the command of Capt. Michael D. Steele) would fast rope down from hovering MH-60L Black Hawk helicopters. The Rangers would then create a four-corner defensive perimeter around the target building while a column of nine Humvees and three five-ton trucks (under the command of Lt. Col. Danny McKnight) would arrive at the target building to take the entire assault team and their prisoners back to base. The entire operation was estimated to take no longer than 30 minutes.
The ground-extraction convoy was supposed to reach the captive targets a few minutes after the beginning of the operation. However, it ran into delays. Somali citizens and local militia formed barricades along the streets of Mogadishu with rocks and burning tires, blocking the convoy from reaching the Rangers and their captives. Aidid militiamen with megaphones shouting, "Kasoobaxa guryaha oo iska celsa cadowga!" ("Come out and defend your homes!").

Fifty-two months and 10 days ago, in a moment of tragedy and trauma, the duties of this office fell upon me. I asked then for your help and God's, that we might continue America on its course, binding up our wounds, healing our history, moving forward in new unity, to clear the American agenda and to keep the American commitment for all of our people.
United we have kept that commitment. United we have enlarged that commitment.
Through all time to come, I think America will be a stronger nation, a more just society, and a land of greater opportunity and fulfillment because of what we have all done together in these years of unparalleled achievement.
Our reward will come in the life of freedom, peace, and hope that our children will enjoy through ages ahead.
What we won when all of our people united just must not now be lost in suspicion, distrust, selfishness, and politics among any of our people.
Believing this as I do, I have concluded that I should not permit the Presidency to become involved in the partisan divisions that are developing in this political year.
With America's sons in the fields far away, with America's future under challenge right here at home, with our hopes and the world's hopes for peace in the balance every day, I do not believe that I should devote an hour or a day of my time to any personal partisan causes or to any duties other than the awesome duties of this office--the Presidency of your country.
Accordingly, I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President.
But let men everywhere know, however, that a strong, a confident, and a vigilant America stands ready tonight to seek an honorable peace--and stands ready tonight to defend an honored cause--whatever the price, whatever the burden, whatever the sacrifice that duty may require.

On January 29, 2010, Torn was arrested after breaking into a closed Litchfield Bancorp branch office in Lakeville, Connecticut, where Torn maintains a residence. He was charged with carrying a firearm without a permit, carrying a firearm while intoxicated, first-degree burglary, second-degree criminal trespassing and third-degree criminal mischief. The Connecticut State Police said that Torn broke into the bank thinking it was his home.
