The Inner Light

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: Posted by H.V.O.M at 7:55 AM Monday, October 11, 2010

I was thinking extensively about that again last night.

The existence is okay for a while but then it becomes tormenting enough to look for a way back to the real world. There is always something important missing that eventually becomes unbearable. Tom made it out on his fourth time in a record 38 years. Phoebe was only in there for a year a half. Kerry Burgess, in the only time I know about, because he has not returned from his second trip, was in there for a time I later presumed because of his astronomical readings in the sky, of which I assumed was accurate in this real world. He had no clocks so he spent almost all his time, which was probably more than fifty years, trying to find a way to measure time. There was no people in that world but sometimes he would see mannequins positioned around and sometimes that mannequins would be positioned around where he had been trying to measure time, such as by chiseling marks into rock, which the mannequins were then standing in front of that had been sabotaged.

I began to grow very fond
of that mannequin.
Maybe because, like me,
she didn't age.

You know, if you embrace my theories the way I do then I am actually not surprised there are NOT overt signs of cornfields in this film, I think to myself writing this sentence as I have the DVD paused to make this note. Then just before I was about to make this post I thought back to the scene of "Angel" caressing the statue of Jesus Christ in the church, and I barely recall that brief scene but I recall the smirk on her face and I think again about how seriously annoyed I was with the mannequins I kept seeing but my real-life companion in that world did not see mannequins but actual mechanized beings and they told her to not tell me they were mechanized and I did not know about that until she told me about it in the real world.

I mean sure, I think now remembering what I had wrote earlier in my blog about the cornfield. I was on that flight, while everyone else had ducked and covered and I was still sitting up so I could maintain custody of the prisoner, then everything went kind of fuzzy for a second, even more so, and then the quietness was staggering. I have written about that before, that sense in my mind of sudden quietness, and that was me sitting precisely as I had been on the airplane and there was nothing around me but tall stalks of corn and I was still sitting in the same airplane seat but I was all alone in that cornfield and it was suddenly blaring and maddenly blaring quietness. It drives me crazy now just trying to thing again about that.

The Bewitchin' Pool

Aired Unknown Jun 19, 1964 on CBS

Quotes

(Opening Narration)

Narrator: A swimming pool not unlike any other pool, a structure built of tile and cement and money, a backyard toy for the affluent, wet entertainment for the well-to-do. But to Jeb and Sport Sharewood, this pool holds mysteries not dreamed of by the building contractor, not guaranteed in any sales brochure. For this pool has a secret exit that leads to a never-neverland, a place designed for junior citizens who need a long voyage away from reality, into the bottomless regions of the Twilight Zone.

Aunt T: You sure are solemn children, don't you ever laugh?

Sport: What's there to laugh about?

Aunt T: I'm funny, you could laugh at me.

Whitt: You're not funny, you're nice.

Aunt T: How about a riddle? Does anybody know a riddle?

Whitt: I do. What do you call someone who crosses the ocean twice and doesn't take a bath either way?

Aunt T: What?

Whitt: A dirty double crosser! (everybody laughs)

This was my favorite track from Mike and The Mechanics. I "remember" sitting there in Liz Lumadue's apartment talking about this band and she wrote down their name because she had forgotten about them.

http://www.lyricsfreak.com/m/mike+&+the+mechanics/silent+running_20093553.html

Take the children and yourself
And hide out in the cellar
By now the fighting will be close at hand
Dont believe the church and state
And everything they tell you
Believe in me, Im with the high command

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

Theres a gun and ammunition
Just inside the doorway
Use it only in emergency
Better you should pray to god
The father and the spirit
Will guide you and protect from up here

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

Swear allegiance to the flag
Whatever flag they offer
Never hint at what you really feel
Teach the children quietly
For some day sons and daughters
Will rise up and fight while we stood still

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

Can you hear me running (can you hear me calling you? )
(can you hear me) hear me calling you?
(can you hear me running) hear me running babe?
(can you hear me running) hear me running?
Calling you, calling you

Godamnit I hate taking those drugs. I would say that the cure is worse than the disease, but I am not the one with the disease. I am being forced to take drugs because I see it as the only option of getting my life back, while the real solution to getting my life back is to let me go home.

I don't know what the goddamned hold up is that keeps me from seeing my wife, but I want to regain access to my resources so I can go to a dentist of my choice. If I can't see her, I could be making better use of my time in getting ready to live with her again.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 05/08/07 4:16 PM
Well, eventually I would have put Tracie's name on the title for that house. But we only lived together for 6 months and I never got around to it or even thought about looking into how to do it.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 05/08/07 4:24 PM
Liz Lumadue. That must mean something. Liz must be Elizabeth. Lumadue....luma, maybe?

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 05/08/07 4:25 PM
In my "memory," her last name was pronounced lum-uh-doo. But maybe it has something to do with luma. There are several references, I find myself thinking of the one about the video component. lou-muh-doo ? This might have something to do with the Apollo flights and the video system we used on the Moon.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luma_%28video%29

As applied to video signals, luma represents the brightness in an image (the "black and white" or achromatic portion of the image). Luma is typically paired with chroma. Luma represents the achromatic image without any color, while the chroma components represent the color information. Converting R'G'B' sources (i.e. the output of a 3CCD camera) into luma and chroma allows for chroma subsampling, enabling video systems to optimize their performance for the human visual system. Since human vision is more sensitive to luminance ("black and white") detail than color detail, video systems can optimize bandwidth for luminance over color.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 05/08/07 4:33 PM
I hate these feelings of insecurity that I might not actually be married to her.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 05/08/07 8:22 PM
Now that was just the best dream I just woke up from. Describing it just won't do it justice but I probably will later.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 05/08/07 9:12 PM
The part that almost makes it impossible to describe that dream as I want to is that there seemed to be a lot of nuance and emotion that I cannot even begin to articulate. The great part about the dream was that at the end, I realized the source of those great emotions was Phoebe. The character who represented her was someone that had been earlier riding in a car with me. There was some activity I was involved in that I can still see, but I don't understand what it means, and I don't feel like writing about it even though it probably all meant something. As for Phoebe, I walked into a room that looked almost like a restraunt because she and another woman were sitting at a booth-style table. In a nearby booth was a hologram of Marilyn Monroe and the two women giggled when the hologram effected a friendly demeanor as I approached and said "Hello, Elaine." That was funny to them but I don't really get it. Slightly before that, I was walking up to the woman, with feeling associated that I was seeing my girlfriend and I was going up to talk to her, and the closest person I can remember from my "memory" that she resembled was Tracey Grabski. She was wearing a U.S. Navy enlisted shirt that was white and short-sleeved. I want to say we were both in the Navy. I saw her rating badge on her sleeve and I made a comment about how I didn't know she was striking to be a Fire Controlman, as she had the rating badge of a FCSN, or E-3 Fire Controlman, on her shirt. She gave me a very endearing sideways look and said it wasn't her shirt. But there is a lot more detail and nuance than I can describe. It wasn't until the end of the dream I realized it was my shirt. And I am not sure if she actually spoke those words or whether she was lip-synching those words and I heard someone else speak those words. The next part I remember is that she was standing in front of me and I think she was going to kiss me but that was the woman who currently portrays the "Starbuck" character. There was some other stuff there at the end but it was more feelings than anything and it was about me getting to see Phoebe again sometime soon and I found myself thinking that the only way I could really express how much this dream meant to me would be through the beating of my heart as I hold her as close as I can.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 05/08/07 9:51 PM

I always thought the woman “Picard” was married to looked familiar, in the context of my artificial identity. She resembled a woman named Liz Lumadue that I went out. I met Liz at the bank where we both worked. That is probably an important clue but I am not entirely sure what it could mean.

PICARD: Magnify. Mister Data?

DATA: It appears to be a probe of some kind, but there is no Starfleet record of this shape or design.

RIKER: Is it scanning us?

WORF: No sir, but it has assumed a relative position and it is holding course with us.

DATA: The probe is composed of paricium and talgonite, a ceramic alloy.

LAFORGE: Not a very sophisticated technology.

WORF: Sir, I am detecting a low-level nucleonic beam coming from the probe.

RIKER: Shields up. Stand by phasers.

DATA: The beam is scanning the shield's perimeter. The probe is emitting an unusual particle stream.

WORF: Sir, the beam is penetrating our shields.

ELINE: Well. finally. How are you feeling? Kamin, can you answer me?

PICARD: What is this place?

ELINE: Kamin.

PICARD: Picard to Enterprise.

ELINE: Kamin, please don't get up yet. You're still not well.

PICARD: I asked you, what is this place?

ELINE: This is your home, of course.

PICARD: Am I a prisoner here?

ORLANDO, Fla. — The $630-million home-away-from-home for E.T., Ghostbusters, Jaws and King Kong made its official debut today with dozens of Hollywood stars joining Steven Spielberg to "ride the movies" at Universal Studios Florida.

The combination theme park and film production center features high-tech entertainment on a big scale--showing visitors how movies are made while letting them in on the action.

James Stewart, Charlton Heston, Bill Cosby and Michael J. Fox were among the 50 or so top names parading down a replica of Hollywood Boulevard in limousines to open the festivities.

Sidney Sheinberg, president of the park's co-owner, MCA Inc., today called the 444-acre site "a swampland turned into a dreamland."

PICARD: Are there other planets in this star system? Do you visit other systems? All right. Do you have a communication system here? How do you send messages to other communities, to other places?

ELINE: The usual way, by voice-transit conductor. Do you want to send a message?

PICARD: Yes. When can that be arranged?

ELINE: Tomorrow. Don't you want to ask about us?

PICARD: Of course. Anything you can tell me will be helpful. We're, er, um, married?

ELINE: Three years ago. The happiest day of my life was the day we got married.

PICARD: And what do I do here in Ressik?

ELINE: You're the best iron weaver in the community. At least I think so.

CRUSHER: Something's happening.

DATA: The nucleonic beam has ceased, Commander. The probe has shut down.

CRUSHER: His cerebral functions are stabilising.

RIKER: Mister Worf, put a tractor beam on that probe. I want it in shuttlebay two for examination.

WORF: Yes, Commander.

PICARD: What?

CRUSHER: Please, Captain, don't get up too quickly.

PICARD: Captain? This is the Enterprise. I'm Jean-Luc Picard. How long?

RIKER: Twenty, twenty five minutes.

PICARD: Twenty five minutes?

CRUSHER: Captain, I want you in Sickbay. I'd like to run a full diagnostic on you.

PICARD: Doctor Crusher.

[Picard's quarters]

(Picard is re-discovering his possessions when the doorbell rings. He has to think what that sound is)

PICARD: Come.

RIKER: Hello, sir. Feeling better?

PICARD: Yes. Yes, thank you. But I find I'm having to rediscover that this is really my home.

RIKER: We were able to open the probe and examine it. Apparently, whatever had locked onto you must have been self terminating. It's not functioning any longer. We found this inside.

ELINE: He loves playing. He's quite good at it, don't you think?

PICARD: He loves doing a lot of things too many. Last week, all he wanted to do was be a botanist. The week before that, a sculptor. I wish he could find some focus in his life.

ELINE: I think he has. Maybe you should talk to him.

PICARD: Batai?

BATAI JR: Father?

PICARD: I get the feeling from your mother that you have something to tell me.

BATAI JR: Yes. I was waiting for the right moment, but that will never come. I'm leaving school.

PICARD: Leaving school? No, you're not.

BATAI JR: I want to concentrate on my music. That's what I care about.

PICARD: Last year, all you cared about was mathematics. The year before that, botany. Now

BATAI JR: Through it all, there was my music.

I've been wondering why the hell I would let Julia Roberts get away. Then I remembered Melody Barber. I am thinking that Melody represents some of Julie's characteristics. I remembering wishing I had done something different with Melody too, as with Rachel. Melody was beautiful and elegant. And she was an aspiring actress. I met her at that bank I contracted for in SC.

US Marine Corps first lieutenant Stroud: Welcome home. I said this was yours when you got back. You're a hero. Paul. Paul.

Windtalkers

You've done well as a Marine, Corporal.
Better than you did as a civilian.
Stole a motorbike, crashed it.
Got kicked out of high school.
Assault and battery...
on one Father Crispin O'Donnell.
A priest?
Assistant Principal at Archbishop Keenan
High School, sir, and head disciplinarian.
Public-school boy, myself.
Some minor problems in boot.
A commendation for valor in Shanghai.
And you made a hell of a stand
on the Solomons.
Tough bit of business there.
Pretty tough, sir.
But you're prepared
to jump right back into it?
Yes, sir. Very much so.
''Very much so.''
The Japs have pretty much busted
every code we've thrown at them.
Your men on the Solomons
were lost to a broken code.
Tell me, did you ever run into any lnjuns
on the Solomons?
-lndians, sir?
-Navajo, to be exact.
The Corps has developed a new code
based on their language.
lt's had quite an impact.
So much so, the Navy have decided
to go to great lengths to protect it.
That's why you're here.
You're to pair with one of them,
keep his ass safe.
Your job is to keep him alive,
so he can do his job.
Begging your pardon, but l believe
l'd best serve the Corps killing Japs...
not babysitting some lndian.
We didn't pick your name out of a hat.
We need good Marines.
That's why you're standing here.
Take a look.
lt's a Navajo, or was.
Tortured to death by Japanese intelligence
trying to bust our code.
Fortunately, he couldn't help them
even if he wanted to.
The man was a Navajo, not a codetalker.
The code's based on their language,
but it is still a code.

Everytime I read about Julia Roberts performing on Braodway in New York, I "remember" Melody Barber telling me that she also aspired to be on Broadway.

PINK FLOYD

"Wish You Were Here"

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

The Bewitchin' Pool

Quotes

Jeb: You mean all children have a door at the bottom of the pool?

Aunt T: Oh no, not all children come down here through the pool. Some come down chimneys, or you open the door and there they are. Or sometimes they're on a street corner, or other times on a doorstep, like Whitt there.

The Twilight Zone Season 5 Episode 36

The Bewitchin' Pool

Aired Unknown Jun 19, 1964 on CBS

Quotes

(Closing Narration)

Narrator: A brief epilogue for concerned parents. Of course, there isn't any such place as the gingerbread house of Aunt T, and we grownups know there's no door at the bottom of a swimming pool that leads to a secret place. But who can say how real the fantasy world of lonely children can become? For Jeb and Sport Sharewood, the need for love turned fantasy into reality; they found a secret place--in the Twilight Zone.

PICARD: Did everyone know about this except me? I'll be all right sitting here. You go off with the others. Hold onto my grandson, and watch the damned thing go up for all the good it'll do. What is it they're launching?

MERIBOR: You know about it, Father. You've already seen it.

PICARD: Seen it? What are you talking about? I haven't seen any missile.

BATAI: Yes, you have, old friend. Don't you remember?

PICARD: Batai?

(Batai as the healthy middle-aged man we first met)

BATAI: You saw it just before you came here. We hoped our probe would encounter someone in the future. Someone who could be a teacher. Someone who could tell the others about us.

PICARD: Oh, it's me, isn't it? I'm the someone. I'm the one it finds. That's what this launching is. A probe that finds me in the future.
