Erotomania
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Erotomania is a type of delusion in which the affected person believes that another person, usually a stranger, high-status or famous person, is in love with him or her. The illness often occurs during psychosis, especially in patients with schizophrenia, delusional disorder or bipolar mania. During an erotomanic episode, the patient believes that a "secret admirer" is declaring his or her affection to the patient, often by special glances, signals, telepathy, or messages through the media. Usually the patient then returns the perceived affection by means of letters, phone calls, gifts, and visits to the unwitting recipient. Even though these advances are unexpected and unwanted, any denial of affection by the object of this delusional love is dismissed by the patient as a ploy to conceal the forbidden love from the rest of the world.
Presentation
The core symptom of the disorder is that the sufferer holds an unshakable belief that another person is secretly in love with him or her. In some cases, the sufferer may believe several people at once are "secret admirers." The sufferer may also experience other types of delusions concurrently with erotomania, such as delusions of reference, wherein the perceived admirer secretly communicates his or her love by subtle methods such as body posture, arrangement of household objects, and other seemingly innocuous acts (or, if the person is a public figure, through clues in the media). Erotomanic delusions are typically found as the primary symptom of a delusional disorder or in the context of schizophrenia and may be treated with atypical anti-psychotics.

Confirmation bias
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Confirmation bias, also called myside bias, is the tendency to search for, interpret, or recall information in a way that confirms one's beliefs or hypotheses. It is a type of cognitive bias and a systematic error of inductive reasoning. People display this bias when they gather or remember information selectively, or when they interpret it in a biased way. The effect is stronger for emotionally charged issues and for deeply entrenched beliefs. People also tend to interpret ambiguous evidence as supporting their existing position.

Governor Caldwell, distinguished guests, and fellow Americans:
This conference is being held to consider one of the most important tasks facing our country.
The lives of many millions of our fellow citizens may depend on the development of a strong civil defense.
The threat of atomic warfare is one which we must face, no matter how much we dislike it. We can never afford to forget that the terrible destruction of cities, and of civilization as we know it, is a real possibility.
There are two things our country must do to face this awesome and terrible possibility.
One of them is to look to our civil defense. So long as there is any chance at all that the atomic bombs may fall on our cities, we cannot gamble on being caught unprepared. Let's not fool ourselves--there is such a chance. We must prepare for it.

I dreamed just now of what seems to be the flight of the Stargazer aircraft on 6/27/1994 but the visualizations I assume are mostly just the product of a dream. As usual, there seem to be details that happened before the part I can remember enough to write about that I can not now remember. In the dream, I was onboard that aircraft and we were traveling along towards the point where we would deploy the rocket as it fired and traveled towards space. All I can really visualize though is that the aircraft seemed to be invisible. To me at least. I have the sense that other people could see it. We also were no high over the ground but we were very close to the ground and we were traveling at a rate of motion that did not seem very fast. This all was taking a long time too. I kept expecting the rocket to depart from the aircraft but it did not. I can see the terrain very well. There seemed to be people on the ground looking up and to watch us fly over. We were at another point so close the ground above a highway that I saw a woman in a police car looking up at the sky and I think she was watching us fly over. I think it was before that we were flying over new terrain and I was marveling at the color of the foliage of the trees and it might have seemed that I could even touch the trees with my feet. I remember that very well. But that part is disorienting. It is as though I was standing very close to a wall but then that wall was not actually there and what I saw in front of me was the sky and terrain and everything associated with flying in that aircraft above the ground. It seemed I was talking to the other two men on the aircraft flight deck just then and I become slightly aware as I think about the dream of equipment and instruments around me although that could be the last part. I do have the sense they are wearing uniforms and I think I am too. I am in the middle and I seem to be talking to the guy on my right.

The American Presidency Project
Harry S. Truman
XXXIII President of the United States: 1945-1953
96 - Address at a Dinner of the Civil Defense Conference.
May 7, 1951
Governor Caldwell, distinguished guests, and fellow Americans:
The other thing we must do is to try to prevent atomic war from coming. That is what I have been working for ever since I became President. That is what our foreign policy is all about.
The foreign policy of the United States is based on an effort to attain world peace. Every action we have taken has had this aim in view.
We are right in the midst of a big debate on foreign policy. A lot of people are looking at this debate as if it were just a political fight. But the stakes are a lot more important than the outcome of an election. The thing that is at stake in this debate may be atomic war.
Our foreign policy is not a political issue. It is a matter of life and death. It is a matter of the future of mankind.
These two things--civil defense and foreign policy--are what I will talk to you about tonight. As you see, they are closely tied together. And they are both concerned with a form of warfare which is more destructive than anything the world has ever known before in its history.
Our civil defense problem starts with a few basic facts.
Because there was an atomic explosion in the Soviet Union in 1949, we must act on the assumption that they do have atomic bombs.
They have planes that could drop atomic bombs upon our cities.
No matter how good our air defense may be, or how big an air force we build, a determined air attack by the Soviet Union could drop bombs upon this country. Our air force experts say planes would get through, however good our defenses may be.
The purpose of atomic attacks would be to strike a death blow at our cities, to burn out our centers of production, and to create panic among our people.
There is no complete protection against an atomic bomb attack. But there is a lot we can do to reduce the number of deaths and injuries and to check panic.
We must organize ourselves in every city, factory, office, and home. Civil defense is a responsibility which begins with the individual. It begins with you--it begins with you. It is shared with the city, the State, and the Nation.
We have two immediate jobs. One is to teach all our people how to protect themselves in the event of an enemy attack. The other is to organize and train millions of volunteers as active members of the United States Civil Defense Corps. That is what you are here for.
The question we are putting up to you men and women at this conference is: How can we do these jobs as quickly and as efficiently as it is possible? We need your help in getting our fellow citizens to realize that this is a very serious business. So long as we face the threat of an atomic attack on the United States, we have got to build a strong civil defense organization.
But even with such an organization, our losses in an atomic war, if we should have one--and God forbid--those losses would be terrible. Whole cities would be casualties. Cleveland or Chicago, Seattle or New York, Los Angeles or Washington, or any of our other great cities might be destroyed. And they could be destroyed.
Even with such losses, frightful as they would be, I think this country would survive and would win an atomic war. But even if we win, an atomic war would be a disaster.
The best defense against the atomic bomb is to prevent the outbreak of another world war and to achieve a real peace. We must bend all our energy to the job of keeping our free way of life, and to keep it without another war.
We can have peace only if we have justice and fair dealing among nations. The United Nations is the best means we have for deciding what is right and what is wrong between nations. It is a great attempt to make the moral judgment of mankind effective in international affairs. Nothing is more important if mankind is to overcome the barbaric doctrine that might makes right.
Our best chance to keep the peace and to stay free is for nations that believe in freedom to stick together and to build their strength together. That is what we call collective security.
We have been trying since the last war was over and even before it was over to build a system of collective security among those countries who really believe in the principle of the United Nations.
I think we have made a lot of progress. I know that some people have become impatient with our efforts to establish collective security, because we have not yet succeeded in attaining world peace. But we are on the right road.
There are cynics who scorn the United Nations, who are indifferent to the need for cooperation among the free peoples. They do not understand that our best hope for peace is to bind together the nations that are striving for peace and to increase their strength to stop aggression.
The United Nations is being severely tested today because of the Korean conflict. The fighting there is requiring great sacrifices. In a time of crisis there is a tendency to look for some easy way out regardless of the consequences. But we must not be misled. We must not lose sight of the world picture and the critical importance of the United Nations if we are to reach a permanent solution.
Communist aggression in Korea is a part of the worldwide strategy of the Kremlin to destroy freedom. It has shown men all over the world that Communist imperialism may strike anywhere, anytime.
The defense of Korea is part of the worldwide effort of all the free nations to maintain freedom. It has shown free men that if they stand together, and pool their strength, Communist aggression cannot succeed.
The firm stand of the United Nations in Korea has checked the advance of the Communist imperialism throughout Asia. It is using up the military resources of the Chinese Communists to such an extent that they are not able to carry out the designs of Communist imperialism against the independence of other Asian countries. And the people of those countries who have been resisting Communist aggression have now been given new hope and new courage.
The Communist assault in Indochina has been checked by the free people of Indochina with the help of the French. In Malaya the British are holding firm against Communist guerrilla attacks. In the Philippines, in Burma, and in other places in Asia, Communist-led guerrillas are being blocked.
The fight against aggression in Korea has also dealt a heavy blow to the Kremlin conspiracy outside of Asia. It has brought new hope and courage to free men in Europe, and in the Middle East, who face the Soviet menace across their frontiers. The fight against Communist aggression in the Far East is the fight against Communist aggression in the West and in the whole world as well.
The struggle in Korea is a long and a hard one. But it can be won--and our policy is designed to win it.
The Chinese rulers are losing large numbers of their soldiers. As these losses increase, it will become clearer and clearer to them that aggression does not pay. They can have peace when they give up their aggression and stop the fighting.
Meanwhile, the strength of all the free nations is growing. The Soviet plan of world conquest is becoming more and more impossible to achieve. If we stick to our guns, and continue to punish the aggressors, we can end the aggression in Korea and restore peace.
We have been urged to take measures which would spread the fighting in the Far East. We have been told that this would bring the Korean conflict to a speedy conclusion; that it would save the lives of our troops. In my judgment that just isn't true. I believe we have a better chance of stopping aggression in Korea, at a smaller cost in the lives of our troops and those of our allies, by following our present course.
Let me tell you that I have studied this question for a long time. It is not a question that can be decided in the light of Korea alone. It does not affect just the Far East alone. It is not a local question. It affects Korea and Japan, and the security of our troops in those places. But it also reaches Europe, and the future of the North Atlantic Treaty, and the security of free people there and everywhere else in the world. It is a decision that affects the future of the United Nations and the future of the whole world.
I have refused to extend the area of the conflict in the Far East, under the circumstances which now prevail, and I am going to tell you exactly why.
I have refused first on military grounds. The best military advice I have been able to obtain--the best collective military advice in this country--is that this course of action would not lead to a quick and easy solution of the Korean conflict.
On the contrary, it could very well lead to a much bigger and much longer war. Such a war would not reduce our casualties in the Far East. It would increase them enormously.
Such a war would expose our troops to devastating air and submarine attacks. It would seriously endanger Japan and the Philippines. And it would unite the Chinese people behind their Communist rulers.
Furthermore, a deep involvement on our part in a war in China, whatever the outcome there, would have critical military consequences in Europe. There is nothing that would give the Kremlin greater satisfaction than to see our resources committed to an all-out struggle in Asia, leaving Europe exposed to the Soviet armies.
These are the military dangers.
But there are other dangers. The Kremlin is trying, and has been trying for a long time, to drive a wedge between us and the other free nations. It wants to see us isolated. It wants to see us distrusted. It wants to see us feared and hated by our allies.
Our allies agree with us in the course we are following. They do not believe that we should take the initiative to widen the conflict in the Far East. If the United States were to widen the conflict, we might well have to go it alone.
If we go it alone in Asia, we may destroy the unity of the free nations against aggression. Our European allies are nearer to Russia than we are. They are in far greater danger. If we act without regard to the danger that faces them, they may act without regard to the dangers that we face. Going it alone brought the world to the disaster of World War II. We cannot go it alone in Asia and go it in company in Europe. The whole idea of going it alone is the opposite of everything we have stood for since World War II. Going it alone in Asia might wreck the United Nations, the North Atlantic Treaty, and the whole system of collective security we are helping to set up.
That would be a tremendous victory for the Soviet Union.
We do not intend to fall into that trap. I do not propose to strip this country of its allies in the face of Soviet danger.
The path of collective security is our only sure defense against the dangers that threaten us. It is the path to peace in Korea; it is the path to peace in the world.
We are determined to do our utmost to limit the war in Korea. We will not take any action which might place upon us the responsibility of initiating a general war-a third world war. But if the aggressor takes further action which threatens the security of the United Nations forces in Korea, we will meet and counter that action.
I repeat, I am convinced that the course we are now following in Korea is accomplishing the most for peace--and at the least cost in American lives. All of us wish that no Americans had to fight or die. But by fighting on a limited scale now, we may be able to prevent a third world war later on.
Remember this, if we do have another world war, it will be an atomic war. We could expect many atomic bombs to be dropped on American cities, and a single one of them could cause many more times the casualties than we have suffered in all the fighting in Korea. I do not want to be responsible for bringing that about.
Some people do not understand how the free world can ever win this long struggle without fighting a third world war. These people overlook the inner weaknesses of the Soviet dictatorship. They forget that the free world is stronger--stronger in its determination, stronger in its staying power, stronger in its human resources--than any [p.269] system of slavery under a totalitarian dictatorship.
The Kremlin's system of terror, which appears to be its main strength, is one of its greatest weaknesses. Dictatorships are based on fear. They cannot give their people happiness and peace. They have nothing to offer except aggression and slavery.
As the aggressive tactics of the Kremlin are checked by the collective defenses of a free world, the futility of the whole Communist program is becoming more and more apparent to the people under Soviet control.
We can already see this process at work. In China the failure of the Korean adventure is weakening the hold of the Communist government. Wholesale arrests and executions are taking place. In the same way the pressure of the police state is increasing in the other satellite countries.
Yugoslavia has thrown off the Kremlin yoke. Every day refugees flee across the border from the Iron Curtain countries into the free countries of Europe.
There are growing signs of internal tension and unrest behind the Iron Curtain.
We must remember that the peoples under the Soviet rule of terror are not only our friends but our allies. They are victims of a terrible tyranny. We do not hate them. We have had friendly relations with them in the past, and we can have such friendship again.
As the free nations build their strength and unity, this fact will compel a change in the Soviet drive for power and conquest. The Soviet rulers are faced with the growing strength of the free world, the increasing cost of aggression, and the increasing difficulty of driving their people to greater and greater hardships. They will be forced by these pressures from within and without to give up aggression. It will then be possible to make progress with a program for international control and the reduction of armaments and for the peaceful settlement of disputes.
Our programs of economic aid and technical assistance, and our campaign of truth, not only strengthen the free peoples, they weaken the dictatorships. They remind the victims of tyranny that a better world lies outside their prison. They build up the hope of freedom everywhere.
Everything we can do to strengthen the free world; every dollar we spend for assistance to other nations; every effort we make to resist aggression in Korea, and around the world, brings closer the day of genuine peace.
We are not engaged in a struggle without end. We are engaged in a struggle which has the definite goal of peace. Peace under law is the victory we seek.
To achieve this goal we must work together, steadfastly and patiently. We must not be led astray. The real issue is whether we stand alone, or whether we stand and work with the other free peoples of the world.
I am confident that the American people will not yield either to impatience or defeatism. I am sure that our courage and wisdom are equal to the great task we are now undergoing. And I believe that with all our resources, our human energies, and our commonsense, we shall be successful in the great objective of defending freedom and bringing peace to the world.
Note: The President spoke at 10:30 p.m. at the Statler Hotel in Washington. In his opening words he referred to Millard Caldwell, Civil Defense Administrator and former Governor of Florida. The address was carried on a nationwide broadcast.

The Running Man
I have always read a lot, since I was a kid. When I was in the Navy I read a lot of books when we were out to sea and one of my favorites authors during that time was Stephen King, not to mention Tom Clancy and Louis L'Amour.
One of King's book that has been on my mind a lot over these past few years is The Running Man. You may have seen the movie, but the book is a lot different and I think a much better work. Anyway, there have also been a lot of similarities between my experience over the past few years and that of the protagonist character in the book.
One notable event happened a few years ago when I was still working with Microsoft, although was soon to quit, and I was living in an apartment in Redmond. Noises bother me a lot and the people in the apartment above me were causing quit a commotion. It sounded like they had a lot of people in there and they were all stomping around. I went up there and knocked on the door. Before they opened it, I heard someone on the other side say, "Shh, it's the running man."
That stuck in my head for a long time. Ordinarily I probably wouldn't have given it a second thought for several reasons. One is that I was literally running a lot because I was training for my Ironman triathlon. But how would they know that? From their apartment, they couldn't see me leaving mine to go out running on the Samm. Trail. Plus that, they were new to the building.
And then I remembered The Running Man by King and that really worried me. It was crazy but it made sense.
So, anyway, there have been about a million little things like this that have led me to where I am now. I know what I heard and I know what I've seen. I still believe without doubt that I will get answers to all this, I just wonder if I am going to have to wait until I am 90 years old before that happens. My best years were ahead of me. There is still a lot I want to accomplish. None of this is helping.
Interesting commentary about The Running Man I found on the web:
http://rense.com/general63/sstep.htm
But other early writings of King (Bachman) have proved even more prescient, perhaps none more so than the action-packed novella, The Running Man (1982). Here, King foretells of the coming "reality TV" craze, where human beings risk life and limb for a shot at a little money and a little fame.
The protagonist of the Running Man is Benjamin Richards, an out of work breadwinner in a barren economy, forced to compete on a macabre game show where the losing contestants are murdered. Richards' task is to elude capture for 30 days from law enforcement and a group of trackers called the Hunters.
Citizens are told that Richards is a criminal (terrorist?), and will receive cash rewards as "great citizens" (patriots?) if they turn him in. If Richards remains free for 30 days, his prize is a billion dollars. If he gets caught, he will be executed in the most violent manner imaginable.

[an CGI falsified version of the actual events of the Bakersfield massacre is shown; the police heilcopter is flying over the city]
Phil Hiton: Our star runner tonight needs no introduction. He's Ben Richards, the brutal slayer of 60 men, women, and children in the Bakersfield massacre.
Ben Richards: Food riot in progress. Approximately 1,500 civilians. Moving in.
Dispatcher: [to Richards] Yankee-nine-niner, the crowd is unarmed. Repeat, unarmed. Abort attack. Acknowledge, Yankee-Nine-Niner.
Ben Richards: [to dispatch] The hell with you.

ALTERNATE DANIEL
What's this?
ALTERNATE HAMMOND
A non-disclosure agreement. What we're about to discuss has been classified Top Secret by the United States Government.
ALTERNATE DANIEL
(closing the file and placing his hands on top of it)
What if we don't want to sign it?
ALTERNATE HAMMOND
(gesturing toward the door)
Well then, you're free to leave.
[Alternate Carter grabs a pen without hesitation and signs very quickly. Alternate Daniel concedes and does the same. They pass the signed documents to Alternate Hammond, who gives them the Top Secret files.]
ALTERNATE HAMMOND
You have a background in archaeology, isn't that right, Doctor Jackson?
ALTERNATE DANIEL
That's right.
ALTERNATE HAMMOND
But your theories failed to gain much acceptance among your colleagues.
ALTERNATE DANIEL
You could say that.
ALTERNATE HAMMOND
Egyptian pyramids as landing pads for alien spacecraft.
ALTERNATE DANIEL
I did not say that unequivocally. I simply put forth the possibility, that based on the knowledge that—
ALTERNATE HAMMOND
It's all right, Doctor, you don't have to defend your theories here. A month ago, a team of archaeologists from the University of Chicago uncovered an ancient Egyptian tomb near Giza. Inside they found artifacts typical of the period, plus one or two objects that have yet to be identified, and a video camera.
ALTERNATE CARTER
(incredulous)
A video camera.
ALTERNATE HAMMOND
(showing them a picture)
It was perfectly preserved in a vacuum sealed canopic jar. The technology is somewhat different than what is commercially available today, but we managed to charge the battery. However, we didn't bring you here because we found the camera. We brought you here because of what had been recorded on the tape inside that camera.

ALTERNATE CARTER
So, did you try dialling the Stargate address that the Daniel Jackson on the tape mentions?
ALTERNATE MCKAY
No, why would we do that?
ALTERNATE CARTER
Well, just to see—
ALTERNATE MCKAY
Of course we tried. It's called sarcasm. We tried the address numerous times; nothing happened.
ALTERNATE DANIEL
Did you try any other combinations?
ALTERNATE MCKAY
I'm sorry. What are your areas of expertise?
ALTERNATE CARTER
Astrophysics.
ALTERNATE DANIEL
Archaeology.
ALTERNATE MCKAY
(to Alternate Daniel)
And I would listen to you, because…?
ALTERNATE CARTER
We're on the tape.
ALTERNATE MCKAY
No you, you I would listen to if you were reading a phone book.
ALTERNATE CARTER

ALTERNATE CARTER

ALTERNATE DANIEL
Any progress with the ship?
ALTERNATE CARTER
Well, the technology is way beyond us, but I do have something. It could be big.

ALTERNATE CARTER
Remember how McKay said they tried dialling the Stargate address several times and nothing happened?
ALTERNATE DANIEL
Yeah.
ALTERNATE CARTER
I started thinking. Nothing happened here.

What have you got?
ALTERNATE DANIEL
(primly)
We're waiting to see General Hammond.
ALTERNATE DAVIS
He's busy. Why don't you tell me; I'll decide if it's worth interrupting him.
[Alternate Daniel passes a file to Alternate Carter, who passes it to Alternate Davis.]
ALTERNATE CARTER
I cross referenced our previous attempts to dial the gate with some recent seismic activity in Antarctica. They're a perfect match. The epicenter in all eight cases was exactly the same. Approximately 50 miles outside of McMurdo.
(pointing to a location on the map)
That is where you'll find your second gate.
ALTERNATE DANIEL
Worth it?
ALTERNATE DAVIS
Excuse me.

Also, "Salesman." I saw that in a dream while sleeping recently. I saw myself going through an induction process in the United States Marine Corps and I woke up understanding that I was dreaming of my actual experience in 1990. I saw a document that indicated I was being inducted to the United States Marine Corps with the officer grade of Chief Warrant Officer 2. I saw in the dream another document associated with my induction and that document indicated I had been assigned the informal name "Salesman."

Survivor: `It Really Hit You -an Utter Mess Of Bodies`
July 20, 1989 By Rogers Worthington, Chicago Tribune. Tribune reporters Jean Latz Griffin in Chicago and Jessica Seigel in Denver and Sioux City Journal reporter Harvey Sanford contributed to this report.
``We hit the ground very hard. We expected it to bounce back up, but it didn`t. Then we felt air and dust, and we couldn`t see. We were stopped before I realized we were upside down.``
Manz said he ``felt a really severe jolt. We came out of the ankle grab position, then there was a second jolt, and we lost all concept of direction. We didn`t know if we were end over end or sideways or what.``
Through fire, Postle said, he saw daylight at both ends of the fuselage. He helped two women outside before he realized he was bleeding profusely from a head wound, for which he received 27 stitches.
Martha Vazquez, of Elida, Ohio, who was with Manz on the aircraft returning from a business trip to Denver, said: ``You knew you had to get out of there fast. You just knew you had to keep running before something exploded.``
Another passenger, Charles Martz, of Denver, remembers saying to himself: ``This was going to be the one that bought the ranch.``
But Martz, who also is a pilot, said: ``That pilot did a hell of a job. He saved my life. He did a super job of controlling the plane as best he could.``
After the plane crashed and broke into three pieces, Martz said, he was upside down, and he unfastened his seat belt.
``I dropped a little way and discovered bodies all over the place,``
Martz said.

Project Gemini
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Gemini
Project Gemini was the second human spaceflight program of the United States of America. It operated between Projects Mercury and Apollo, with 10 manned flights occurring in 1965 and 1966. Its objective was to develop techniques for advanced space travel, notably those necessary for Project Apollo, whose objective was to land men on the Moon. Gemini missions involved the first American extravehicular activity and new orbital maneuvers included rendezvous and docking.
The "Gemini" designation comes from the fact that each spacecraft held two men, as "gemini" in Latin means "twins".

BALINSKY
(holding up one of the samples)
Now, in addition, we discovered several grains of troilite, and a mesostasis phase which contained micrometer crystals.
O'NEILL
Hmmmm…
BALINSKY
Now it's undergoing further testing, but we hope to have the results on your desk first thing tomorrow morning.
O'NEILL
(shaking a piece of the rock, clearly not serious)
Don't you keep me waiting!
BALINSKY
No, sir.
(taking a different sample from his colleague and showing it to O'Neill)
Now here's where things get really interesting, because you will notice in this fissure—
[Daniel comes running into the room.]
DANIEL
Jack! We need to— We need to talk. Oh, sorry for interrupting.
O'NEILL
(grabbing Daniel very firmly by the forearm)
No! It's okay. If it's important, you must interrupt. You must.
[Balinsky nods, disappointed.]
DANIEL
(grimacing slightly)
I think we may have found a ZPM.
O'NEILL
(leaping to his feet)
Yes!

CARTER
We did an extensive satellite sweep of the Giza Plateau searching for an energy signature like the one given off by the ZPM we found near Taonas. Even if it's buried under dirt and rock, we should have been able to detect it. We found nothing. I'm sorry, Daniel, but if it's there, it's probably been depleted.
DANIEL
No, I don't think so. According to the text, it was a religious artifact, an icon. It was never used as a power source.
TEAL'C
It is possible Ra simply took the device with him when he left Earth.
CARTER
In which case, it could be anywhere by now.
DANIEL
(looking a bit sheepish)
We don't know where it is now, but we do know where it was. Giza, 3000 B.C.
CARTER
(shaking her head)
You can't be serious.
O'NEILL
(confused)
What.
DANIEL
It's the only way.
O'NEILL
What.
CARTER
No, we agreed.
O'NEILL
If I have to say 'what' one more time, heads are gonna roll!
DANIEL
We have a time machine. We can go back and get the ZPM.
O'NEILL

O'NEILL
You're on board with this?
CARTER
I'm not happy about it, but we don't have any historical evidence to show that any Goa'uld has ever used a ZPM. In which case, it wouldn't be missed. We would have to be extremely careful to minimize our interaction with the people of the period.
O'NEILL
Yeah, there's that. But I thought you said you couldn't get it to work?
CARTER
No one at Area 51 has been able to engage the time device. In fact, they've barely gotten the ship off the ground. But you were able to fly it without too much difficulty.
TEAL'C
Indeed. You have demonstrated an exceptional ability to control Ancient devices.
DANIEL
Jack, think about it. With a fully functional ZPM, we could power Earth's defenses and open up a wormhole to the Pegasus Galaxy.
[O'Neill looks at Carter, who nods in agreement. O'Neill looks thoughtful but unconvinced.]

Now remember, Jack, 3000 B.C. After Sam hooks up the power to the time device, think about that date and nothing else.
O'NEILL
This thing's Ancient. How's it gonna know from B.C.?
CARTER
Your mind is controlling it. The Ancient computer should be able to extrapolate from your concept of time.

How long does it take Antarctica to notice the Northern Hemisphere is warming?
Filed under: Climate Science — eric @ 29 April 2015
Eric Steig
A series of large and abrupt climate changes occurred during the last ice age, most clearly expressed in ice cores from Greenland and other paleoclimate data from the circum-North-Atlantic region. Since the discovery of these events, we’ve been trying to pin down the timing of abrupt climate changes elsewhere on the globe. Were there corresponding events in the Southern Hemisphere? And did they occur at the same time? A new paper published this week in Nature (April 30th, 2015) provide a significantly updated answer to these questions. Many in the climate research community — both modern climate and paleoclimate — will find the results quite interesting.
The new paper is the culmination of a huge effort to develop the best-dated long ice core record from Antarctica, rivaling the GISP2 and GRIP ice cores obtained from central Greenland in the early 1990s, and the more recent NGRIP and NEEM cores from North Greenland (e.g. NEEM Community Members, 2014). The core was obtained at the West Antarctic Ice Sheet divide (WAIS Divide), led by the Desert Research Institute and the University of Nevada, with the University of New Hampshire. The new paper was written by a consortium of postdocs, faculty, and students at the Oregon State University and University of Washington: Christo Buizert, myself, and Joel Pedro (now at University of Copenhagen), with Brad Markle, Ed Brook, Jeff Severinghaus and Ken Taylor. We have more than 70 other co-authors — faculty colleagues, students, postdocs, logistics coordinators, and ice-drillers — who all made substantial contributions as well. These deep ice cores are a lot of work!
We published records from the WAIS Divide ice core in 2013, covering the last two millennia and the last 30 thousand years (Steig et al., 2013, WAIS Divide Project Members, 2013). Our new work, WAIS Divide Project Members, 2015, extends the record to the bottom of the core (nearly the bottom of the ice sheet at 3400 m depth), and an age of 68 thousand years. Details on the timescale for the core are given in the open-access paper in Climate of the Past (Buizert et al., 2015). The new paper in Nature provides a comparison of the timing of changes in Antarctic temperature with the timing of the abrupt warming and cooling events that characterize the Greenland ice core records. Note that the comparison is actually made between the records of oxygen isotope ratios (δ18O), but we have very strong evidence that these track temperature quite faithfully on the relevant timescales, so I’ll use “temperature” here for simplicity.
The abrupt events in Greenland, characterized by rapid transitions from cold “stadial” to warm “interstadial” conditions and back, and commonly known as Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) events, were felt across the Northern Hemisphere almost immediately, as far as we can tell. But the impact of D-O events in Antarctica has been ambiguous. We’ve known for some time that temperatures in Antarctica change more slowly, and with much smaller amplitude, than in the Northern Hemisphere. In general, the Antarctic temperatures begin to decline when Greenland warms abruptly, and to increase when Greenland cools abruptly (Blunier et al., 1998). This relationship is often called the “bipolar seesaw” and is commonly attributed to the redistribution of heat between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres via changes in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). We’ve also been pretty sure that each of the D-O interstadials has a corresponding warm peak in Antarctica, referred to as the “Antarctic Isotope Maximum” (AIM) events (EPICA Community Members, 2006, and Stefan Rahmstorf’s write-up in an earlier RealClimate post). But the exact phase relationship has been unknown, making it problematic to validate model simulations with confidence (see e.g. Roe and Steig, 2004, Steig, 2006).
The first paper to really start to pin down the phase relationship was that of Pedro et al., 2011, who showed that the most recent of the major abrupt events in Greenland cores (the Bølling warming about 14,700 years ago and the Younger Dryas cooling about 12,880 years ago), the direction of Antarctic temperatures changed at almost exactly the same time. (Note that the Antarctic temperatures don’t change abruptly — their slow trends simply reverse sign, as shown in the figure). But the uncertainties estimated by Pedro et al. were about 200 years on either side of zero. That’s impressively good precision for something that happened more than 10,000 years ago, but not quite good enough.

Better days
With no end in sight to this ordeal, I like to think back to better days. The good life for me is when I can train for my triathlon and marathon hobby. It is no fun though without having a job to go to everyday. Without doubt, the best day of my life so far was in June 2004 when I completed Ironman Coeur d'Alene. I remember standing there on the beach rubbing my toes in the sand at 6:55 am waiting for the cannon to go off. I was still kinda nervous, with over 2000 of my closest friends standing around me, ready to start beating the water and everything in their way. It felt like time had slowed to a standstill and then the cannon went off and they started playing some lyrics from that U2 song, "Beautiful day." I remember hearing only that part of the song, about it being a beautiful day, and then I was in the water, thrashing my way towards the end, 2.4 miles away
