Addison Mitchell McConnell Jr. (born February 20, 1942)
In March 1967, shortly before the expiration of his educational draft deferment upon graduation from law school, McConnell enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve as a private at Louisville, Kentucky. This was a coveted position because the Reserve units were mostly kept out of combat during the Vietnam War.
Although McConnell has allowed reporters to examine parts of his military record and take notes, he has refused to allow copies to be made or to disclose his entire record, despite calls by his opponents to do so.

RONALD REAGAN
40th President of the United States: 1981 - 1989
Address to the Nation on Defense and National Security
March 23, 1983
My fellow Americans, thank you for sharing your time with me tonight.
The subject I want to discuss with you, peace and national security, is both timely and important. Timely, because I've reached a decision which offers a new hope for our children in the 21st century, a decision I'll tell you about in a few minutes. And important because there's a very big decision that you must make for yourselves. This subject involves the most basic duty that any President and any people share, the duty to protect and strengthen the peace.
At the beginning of this year, I submitted to the Congress a defense budget which reflects my best judgment of the best understanding of the experts and specialists who advise me about what we and our allies must do to protect our people in the years ahead. That budget is much more than a long list of numbers, for behind all the numbers lies America's ability to prevent the greatest of human tragedies and preserve our free way of life in a sometimes dangerous world. It is part of a careful, long-term plan to make America strong again after too many years of neglect and mistakes.
Our efforts to rebuild America's defenses and strengthen the peace began 2 years ago when we requested a major increase in the defense program. Since then, the amount of those increases we first proposed has been reduced by half, through improvements in management and procurement and other savings.
The budget request that is now before the Congress has been trimmed to the limits of safety. Further deep cuts cannot be made without seriously endangering the security of the Nation. The choice is up to the men and women you've elected to the Congress, and that means the choice is up to you.
Tonight, I want to explain to you what this defense debate is all about and why I'm convinced that the budget now before the Congress is necessary, responsible, and deserving of your support. And I want to offer hope for the future.
But first, let me say what the defense debate is not about. It is not about spending arithmetic. I know that in the last few weeks you've been bombarded with numbers and percentages. Some say we need only a 5-percent increase in defense spending. The so-called alternate budget backed by liberals in the House of Representatives would lower the figure to 2 to 3 percent, cutting our defense spending by $163 billion over the next 5 years. The trouble with all these numbers is that they tell us little about the kind of defense program America needs or the benefits and security and freedom that our defense effort buys for us.
What seems to have been lost in all this debate is the simple truth of how a defense budget is arrived at. It isn't done by deciding to spend a certain number of dollars. Those loud voices that are occasionally heard charging that the Government is trying to solve a security problem by throwing money at it are nothing more than noise based on ignorance. We start by considering what must be done to maintain peace and review all the possible threats against our security. Then a strategy for strengthening peace and defending against those threats must be agreed upon. And, finally, our defense establishment must be evaluated to see what is necessary to protect against any or all of the potential threats. The cost of achieving these ends is totaled up, and the result is the budget for national defense.
There is no logical way that you can say, let's spend x billion dollars less. You can only say, which part of our defense measures do we believe we can do without and still have security against all contingencies? Anyone in the Congress who advocates a percentage or a specific dollar cut in defense spending should be made to say what part of our defenses he would eliminate, and he should be candid enough to acknowledge that his cuts mean cutting our commitments to allies or inviting greater risk or both.
The defense policy of the United States is based on a simple premise: The United States does not start fights. We will never be an aggressor. We maintain our strength in order to deter and defend against aggression-to preserve freedom and peace.
Since the dawn of the atomic age, we've sought to reduce the risk of war by maintaining a strong deterrent and by seeking genuine arms control. "Deterrence" means simply this: making sure any adversary who thinks about attacking the United States, or our allies, or our vital interests, concludes that the risks to him outweigh any potential gains. Once he understands that, he won't attack. We maintain the peace through our strength; weakness only invites aggression.

JOE BIDEN
Former Vice President of the United States
Press Release - Senator Joe Biden Announces Campaign For President of the United States
January 31, 2007
Highlights Voters Desire for Bold Leadership and Change in Direction
January 31, 2007 - Senator Joseph R. Biden today announced in a video statement posted on his website www.JoeBiden.com that he has filed the necessary paperwork to become a candidate for President of the United States.
"I am heartened by the response so many people have given to my call for a new direction in American foreign policy and to our focus on middle class concerns," said Sen. Biden.
In the video statement, Biden stressed the disastrous results of the Bush Administration's failed policies and handling of Iraq.
"In my view, President Bush has dug America into a very deep hole," said Sen. Biden. "This administration's mishandling of the war in Iraq may be the greatest foreign policy disaster of all time."
Biden said the next president must be prepared to change our policy in Iraq immediately upon entering office, "The next President of the United States must be prepared to immediately step in and act without hesitation to end our involvement in the Iraq conflict without further destabilizing the Middle East and the world."
Biden also emphasized the need for a change in direction more broadly in both foreign and domestic policies, stating, "To restore America's place in the world, we also must focus on the hopes and needs of our own people. The Bush administration because it worships profits over people has forgotten that to make America strong, we need a growing, vibrant middle-class.
We need our citizens to feel secure. Secure that their children will be cared for if they are ill. Secure that they will have a retirement income they can count on. Secure that we are doing all we can to end global warming. Secure that their jobs and opportunities will not vanish like so many have in recent years."
Biden said he would make a more formal presentation of the prospective policies and principles of a Biden Administration over the next several months.

Conflicts of Interest and Nepotism
Q. Mr. President, several recent episodes suggest
The President. I misnamed you. I'm sorry.
Q. Thank you, sir.
Several recent episodes suggest that some administration officials are putting self-interest ahead of the public interest. I refer specifically to an Assistant Defense Secretary's promotion of a weapons system after receiving a $50,000 consultancy fee from the manufacturer of that weapons system; to an Assistant Commerce Secretary's recommending that government weather satellites be sold at the same time he was negotiating for a job with the company likely to acquire those satellites; and to the U.S. Information Agency's practice of giving high-paying jobs and choice assignments to children and friends of top administration officials. How do you feel about all this, sir? Is this acceptable practice in your administration?
The President. Well, I think since every one of these things that you've mentioned is being corrected, or the people themselves involved, simply because there might be a perception of wrongdoing, have offered their resignations—I think it goes back to what has been an attempt on the part of some to portray our administration as always being involved in this sort of thing.
But I would like to cite that in almost all of the cases back over these 2 years and several months, none of the allegations were ever proven, and everything turned out all right. But then as time goes on, there's a tendency to refer back, and it reminds me of a producer in Hollywood once, who refused to hire a director. And the picture that he refused to hire the director for turned out to be a failure. And the next time the director's name came up, the producer said, "No, he was associated with one of the worst failures I ever had." I think there's something of that tone that goes on with what we've been doing.
Now, the people that were hired by USIA—I think it is being well managed, and I think there's been a vast improvement in that agency under its present direction. And the young people that were hired were hired because they were eminently well-qualified for the jobs. And I think in many cases, like most of the people that we've appointed to government, they took those supposed high-paying jobs at something of a sacrifice in relation to what they could get out in civilian life.
Q. But, sir, didn't they have an entree that someone coming in off the street would not have in a similar situation?
The President. Well, isn't almost anyone that you appoint to a position in government someone that you either know or you know through someone? Because, how else do you find the kind of people that you want for the jobs?
Nepotism, in my mind, would be if the person in charge was hiring his own relatives. And there's been nothing of that kind going on.

Proclamation 5194—Missing Children Day, 1984
May 15, 1984
By the President of the United States of America
A Proclamation
Each year hundreds of thousands of American families face the stark terror of a unique tragedy—that of a missing child. Our children are our most precious resource—they are the bond that binds our past with the future. It is for them that we struggle to build a better world. They are the embodiment of our hopes and dreams. To have a child simply disappear strikes an incalculable blow against the spirit and soul of any family so afflicted.
In our efforts to address the nightmare of missing children, 1984 marks the year of a significant step forward. The Department of Justice has awarded a $3.3 million grant to establish a National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Its purpose is to aid parents and law enforcement agencies in locating missing youngsters and preventing the exploitation of children. By collecting and disseminating information regarding missing young people, the Center will lend major support to those searching for their children.
As a Nation committed to the worth of every individual, there can be no more imperative goal for our society than the protection and safety of our young people. It is hoped that these new efforts combined with the increasing awareness of the seriousness of this problem will encourage greater vigilance by the agencies that work to solve this singular type of crime.
As a Nation and as individuals, we all have a responsibility to direct our resources and our efforts to this worthy goal.
Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 25, 1984, as Missing Children Day. I urge officials at all levels of government to take decisive action to ensure the safety and protection of the children in their respective jurisdictions, and I urge all our law enforcement agencies to take particular notice of the danger that threatens any child who has lost his or her home. I urge every American family to take the proper precautions to protect their children.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of May, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eightyfour, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and eighth.

Address at Commencement Exercises at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey
May 21, 1983
Ronald Reagan: And I was fortunate. A man who had survived the Great Depression until then, and was doing well out in the business world, gave me some advice. He said, "Look, I could tell you that maybe I could speak to someone and they might give you a job. But," he said, "they'd only do it because of me." And then he said, "They wouldn't have a particular interest in you." He said, "May I tell you that even in the depths of this depression," and so I will say to you even in the depths of this recession, there are people out there who know that the future is going to depend on taking young people into whatever their undertaking is and starting them out so that—whether it's business, industry, or whatever it might be—it will continue on.
"Now," he said, "a salesman has to knock on a lot of doors before he makes a sale. So," he said, "if you will make up your mind what line of work you want to be in, what industry, what business, whatever it is, profession or other," he said, "and then start knocking on doors, eventually you'll come to one of those men or women who feels that way. And all you have to do-don't ask for the particular job you want; tell them you'll take any job in that industry or that business, whatever it may be, because you believe in it and its future and you'll take your chances on progressing from there."

Chapter 20
"E.T., phone home." Edwards started putting his radio together.
"How many launchers and what type?" Doghouse asked.
"We see one launcher, possibly three missiles on it. We can't tell the type. I wouldn't know the difference anyway. They might have fired off a missile last night about 2300 local."
"Why the hell didn't you tell us?" Doghouse demanded.
"'Cause I didn't know what it was!'' Edwards nearly yelled. "Goddammit! We're reporting on everything we see, and you don't even believe half of what we tell you!"
"Settle down, Beagle. We believe you. I know it's hard. Anything else happening?"
"He knows it's hard," Edwards told his men. "Can't see much activity at all, Doghouse. Stiff early, but we'd expect civilian traffic on the streets."
"Copy that. Okay now, Edwards, real fast, what's your father's middle name?"
"Doesn't have one," Edwards said. "What-"
"The name of his boat?"
"The Annie Jay. What the hell is this?"
"What happened to your girlfriend Sandy?"
It was like a knife in the guts. The tone of his voice answered for him. "You go and fuck yourself!"
"Copy that," the voice replied.

I made a list today of the step-fathers I remember my mother being married to, it seems important. My father was a truck driver. She remarried to a guy named James who was a U.S. Marine. I think he went back into the service after they married and then we moved around to the bases he was stationed at. I think first we went to Santa Ana. I think that is where the El Toro base is at. Then we were at a base in McAlester, OK, where I think he was a guard. She then married Dale Parker, the guy who was electrocuted. He was some kind of hospital worker when they got married and then went on to work in construction, building houses. We were living with his parents for a while. I remember mowing their lawn one day and getting the notion to carve out some kind of message in the grass that people above in aircraft could read. Then she married the Vietnam veteran. He was a pretty nice guy when he was sober, but when he got drunk he was beserk. From what she told me, he had stepped on a landmine in Vietnam. The doctors told him he would never walk again but he made out ok. I remember finding his Purple Heart medals. I think he had three. This was also the time I liked to play around with live ammunition, pulling apart cartridges and shells for the gunpowder so I could blow up the model ships and aircraft I had put together.

Mirror
What damage did Anthony Blunt's spy ring do to Britain?
00:00, 24 JUL 2009 UPDATED 16:02, 28 JAN 2012
BY MIRROR.CO.UK
Blunt, Burgess, Maclean, Philby, Cairncross... they are five typically British names.
It could almost be the first line in one of those Monty Python sketches set in an English public school.
But these were the names of the men who formed the Cambridge Spy Ring - five young men who were at the university together in the 1930s.
In addition to gadding about in dinner jackets, drinking too much champagne and generally behaving like characters from Brideshead Revisited, these young men found time to develop left-wing sympathies that brought them to the attention of Soviet intelligence recruiters.
And, unfortunately for us, they all went on to greater things later in life.
Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean, who worked for the Foreign Office, did a bunk to the Soviet Union when they were fingered by a defector in 1951.
Kim Philby, who was extraordinarily a senior figure in MI6, bluffed it out until 1961 when he too had to do a moonlight flit to Moscow.
The fourth man, Anthony Blunt, had his cover blown in 1964 but in return for not being publicly exposed, he co-operated with his interrogators.
He was even able to continue as Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures - but rumour has it the late Queen Mother would have nothing to do with him.
Mrs Thatcher exposed the deal on coming to power in 1979. Blunt was stripped of his knighthood and disgraced. He was booed at a cinema in Notting Hill and his boyfriend was so distraught he tried to kill himself.
It was at this time that Blunt put his thoughts down on paper - and his memoirs were released yesterday.
The 30,000-word manuscript was lodged in the British Library in 1984 - shortly after Blunt's death - on condition that it should remain sealed for 25 years.
In it, he tells how he was lured into the spy ring by the flamboyantly homosexual Guy Burgess, whom he met at Cambridge in 1931. Blunt was also homosexual but denied any relationship with Burgess.
His memoirs reveal he didn't initially take to the younger man but he was soon won over, and became caught up in Burgess's enthusiasm for left-wing politics, which had gained an "almost religious quality" among students.
In 1935 or 1936, Burgess was recruited by Stalin's Comintern with orders to "go underground". And he asked his friend to join him.
"I was faced with the most important decision of my life," Blunt wrote.
"The atmosphere in Cambridge was so intense, the enthusiasm for any antifascist activity so great, that I made the biggest mistake of my life." The manuscript says nothing of his spying for the NKVD - forerunner of the KGB - during the Second World War when he was working for MI5.
He strongly denied lurid tales of his time sharing a house with Burgess in London's Bentinck Street, and dismisses reports that it was an "alternation of sexual orgies and conspiratorial conversations designed to hinder the war effort". We should not excuse Blunt or any of his fellow travellers.
They were traitors, full stop. But attitudes to communism were different. We tend now to view the Bolshevik Revolution as a terrible mistake. It was the moment the gangsters - the people who murdered poor old Tsar Nicholas II and his glamorous young family - took over and held ruthlessly onto power until the arrival of Mikhail Gorbachev 70 years later.
But for many, the Revolution meant the overthrow of the old corrupt order and an opportunity for ordinary people to have better lives.
And by 1941, with the Americans hesitating about entering the war and the UK on its beam ends, the only country who looked in with a chance of defeating Hitler was Soviet Russia.
All the Cambridge spies caused damage to their country.
Maclean as a diplomat in wartime Washington was privy to private messages between top Americans and Winston Churchill.
The information may well have helped Stalin play hardball at Yalta.
Blunt, or "Johnson" as his Russian handlers codenamed him, became an officer in the Security Service (MI5) at the beginning of the war.
He was on the distribution list of the most secret British Intelligence ULTRA (the codebreaking portrayed in the book and film Enigma).
A key question is how useful was their treachery to the Soviets? The answer is mixed and complicated. Yes, Maclean's information on Anglo-American plans and intentions was useful to Stalin.
But given the power and geograph-icaposition of the Red Army at the end of the war the western allies did not have many cards to play.
Poland could not have been rescued from the Iron Curtain, however hard we tried.
Philby's contribution was more poisonous. He betrayed the names of as many British agents as he could, including lists of all those who had spied for us in Nazi-occupied eastern Europe.
As communist regimes took over in the late 1940s most of these brave men and women who had fought were tortured and shot by the KGB and their local henchmen.
Ironically, Soviet intelligence never fully trusted the Cambridge ring and could never quite believe their luck.
That Philby, a young undergraduate recruited on the off-chance at Cambridge in the 1930s, should join MI6 and then after the war become Head of the Counter-Soviet Section seemed to them too good to be true.
But they never fully exploited their intelligence windfall.
As for the Cambridge spies themselves, they all died unhappy and broken men.
Read Anthony Blunt's anguish and despair at his public disgrace.
In the end he understood - doing the dirty on your country can never be justified and it never pays.

Allegiance
My Favorite Soviet Spy reminds me, as I watched the scene, wondering if the On Demand video would end before the television broadcast of "Allegiance" begins, of when I was a first grader and James Nevell using a pair of pliers, I can still seem to visualize, but not as I saw tonight, pulling teeth from me, as I recall in McAlester Oklahoma. I can recall living there in the US Marine Corps family housing and wondering talking with him about how the television service was not working and I was imagining US Marine Corps soldiers manning television cameras trying to get, I think now for example not remembering precise details, Bozo the Clown back on the air.
What I had been thinking about lately, besides his cold remedy of whisky and honey, was of the early 1970s of me crying as he dragged me across the sand in some beach in Los Angeles. That's really pretty funny.

There is this memory I have been thinking about for a while. It was when i was a kid, maybe 7 years old. Mom was married to James Nevell and we lived in De Queen. He had not gone back into the Marines at that time or he had just gotten out. I think it was the former. Anyway, one day, I was rummaging through our storage shed and I found his U.S. Marines-issued saber. Or I found a machete that day. I remember both happening. Anyway, I was playing with the machete or the saber out in the yard and I was chopping away at any threatening blades of grass or tree limbs. At one point, I started to chop a tree limb that was laying on the ground in front of me. After I swung the blade over my head to strike down on the limb, mom's new puppy ran between my legs and run under the blade. I struck the little bastard square on its backbone, but remarkably, I didn't even break the skin. It ran off yelping but wasn't even bleeding. I was very scared because I thought I had just killed it, but it was all right. As I was just writing that memory, I felt a greater association to it and that Costner movie I just wrote about. When I started writing about hitting that dog, I was thinking about something with lions. As in, a lion rushed at me, I leapt into the air, did a something like a somersault, but not the backflip, rather the other....what do you call that? It wouldn't be a backflip....but something like a side-flip....I'll have to look that up. Anyway, as I flipped over the top of the lion, I either punched its backbone or I had some kind of weapon I used to break its back. I have no idea if this is memory or imagination but I think of this many times. I just wish I knew.

WESTCHESTER — Jim and Shirley Chilton of Westchester are off to Florida for a vacation. The Epcot Center and the golf, however, will be little more than distractions. The main event will be a visit to Cape Canaveral, where on Thursday their son, Kevin, is scheduled to blast off aboard the space shuttle Endeavour.
"We're just thrilled to be a part of it," Jim Chilton said. "This mission will contribute to science and mankind."
Kevin Chilton, 37, has been selected as the pilot of Endeavour for its maiden voyage. The new craft, named for the ship commanded by the 18th-Century British explorer Capt. James Cook, replaces the shuttle Challenger, which was destroyed in the 1986 explosion that killed six astronauts and teacher Christa McAuliffe.
"It isn't very often that a high school (has a) graduate in the astronaut program," Peterson said.

There is also that memory I have written about before where I climbed up on Randy Romine's 100 foot HAM radio antenna. One time I went up there with my first model rocket, the one that was fashioned as R2D2 from Star Wars. Then it dawned on me a few hours later: Of course! R2D2 is shaped a lot like the external fuel tank and the solid-rocket boosters for the space shuttle.

The crash of an EA-6B Prowler jet on the USS Nimitz killed 14 sailors, injured 48, and caused $100,000,000 in damage to the nuclear powered aircraft carrier. Autopsies showed later that the pilot had had six times the normal level of the stimulant brompheniramine in his blood, and that several of the deckhands had traces of marijuana. The United States Navy would adopt a zero tolerance policy toward drugs and would become the first branch of the American services to begin regular drug-testing.

The Navy Monday blamed pilot error for the crash...
By RICHARD C. GROSS
WASHINGTON -- The Navy Monday blamed pilot error for the crash of a radar jamming plane on the nuclear aircraft carrier Nimitz last year but said an exploding missile killed two of the 14 crewmen and accounted for 29 of the 42 injured in the worst peacetime carrier landing accident.
In an official report, the Navy said a high dosage of cold medicine taken by the pilot of the EA-6B Prowler jet may have contributed to the cause of its fiery nighttime crash on the deck of the 90,000-ton supercarrier.
The Navy, for the first time since the accident occurred May 26, 1981, said in the report that a heat-seeking Sparrow air-to-air missile exploded on the deck of the carrier after fires had gone out. The missile had been knocked off an F-14 fighter.
Other missiles burned in the inferno caused by the crash but they did not explode, the report said.
The report of the judge advocate general's investigation into the accident said the pilot, Marine 1st Lt. Steven White, 27, of Houston, Tex., was inexperienced in night landing operations and had missed a landing attempt on the previous pass.
'After careful study of the data contained in the investigation, the Department of the Navy has concluded that the accident resulted from a combination of environmental, mechanical and human factors,' the report said.
'The investigation found no evidence linking the use of illegal drugs as a causative factor and found no evidence of aircraft malfunction,' it said.
Autopsies on the 14 crewmen killed in the crash indicated six of them had used marijuana, a factor that heightened concern about drug use in the military by Congress, the Navy and the Defense Department. None of the six were members of the 3-man crew of the aircraft.
The Prowler, a twin-engine aircraft used in fleet defense to jam enemy radars, crashed on the deck of the carrier as it was coming in for a landing at night 60 miles off Jacksonville, Fla., in the Atlantic. The crash destroyed four planes on the deck and damaged 16 others, five of them seriously.
The report listed these factors as the cause of the crash:
-'Pilot error in that he failed to maintain his aircraft aligned with the centerline of the landing area.
-'The presence of a very high concentration of brompheniramine (a common cold antihistamine decongestant cold medicine ingredient) in the pilot's blood, which may have degraded the mental and physical skills required for night landing.'
Warnings on the labels of antihistamines caution users against driving or operating other machinery while under the effects of the drug.

Well I've been waiting, waiting here so long
But thinking nothing, nothing could go wrong, ooh now I know
She has a built in ability
To take everything she sees
And now it seems I'm falling, falling for her.
She seems to have an invisible touch yeah
She reaches in, and grabs right hold of your heart
She seems to have an invisible touch yeah
It takes control and slowly tears you apart.
Well I don't really know her, I only know her name
But she crawls under your skin, you're never quite the same, and now I know
She's got something you just can't trust
It's something mysterious
And now it seems I'm falling, falling for her.
She seems to have an invisible touch yeah
She reaches in, and grabs right hold of your heart
She seems to have an invisible touch yeah
It takes control and slowly tears you apart.
She don't like losing, to her it's still a game
And though she will mess up your life,
You'll want her just the same, and now I know
She has a built in ability
To take everything she sees
And now it seems I've fallen, fallen for her.
She seems to have an invisible touch yeah

HERBERT HOOVER
31st President of the United States: 1929 - 1933
Statement on the Justice Department Investigation of the Bonus Army.
September 10, 1932
THE PRESIDENT said:
"On the 28th of July last I announced that I had directed the Department of Justice to exhaustively investigate and report in full upon the incidents of the so-called bonus riots of that day in Washington and to present the facts, through sworn witnesses, to the grand jury. I further stated that I should make the Attorney General's report public when received by me.
"The investigation has been completed. In giving out the report which shows the character of many of the persons assembled, the incidents and character of the instigators of the this, I wish to state emphatically that the extraordinary proportion of criminal, Communist, and nonveteran elements amongst the marchers as shown by this report, should not be taken to reflect upon the many thousands of honest, law-abiding men who came to Washington with full right of presentation of their views to the Congress. This better element and their leaders acted at all times to restrain crime and violence, but after the adjournment of Congress a large portion of them returned to their homes and gradually these better elements lost control. This report should correct the many misstatements of fact as to this incident with which the country has been flooded ."
Note: The White House issued the statement on September 10, 1932 for publication on September 12. The text of the Attorney General's report, dated September 9, 1932, follows:
Sir:
Immediately following the riot by the so-called Bonus Army on July 28th, you directed that an investigation and report thereon be made in this Department. We have completed it, and I submit herewith a summary of the result. A vast amount of material in the form of reports, affidavits, and documentary evidence has been accumulated. It is only possible here briefly to summarize the conclusions.
1. The entry of the Bonus Army into the District of Columbia.
The first contingent of the Bonus Army arrived about May 27th. On June 3d, information reached the Department that a contingent from Cleveland led by C. B. Cowan and another from Detroit led by John T. Pace, comprising about 1300 men, gathered at the Pennsylvania Railroad yards at Cleveland and had held up a mail train and attempted to commandeer transportation to Washington. Cowan, one of these leaders, has a long police record; he has been convicted and sentenced twice for forgery in Ohio and was sentenced to 13 months for robbing the mails to the United States Penitentiary at Atlanta in 1928. Pace, a well known Communist leader, has an extended police record. By one means and another these groups and others obtained transportation to Washington. By the middle of June they had congregated here in large numbers. They entered into possession of various tracts of government property, on some of which were old buildings. In some instances permission to do so was given by the police authorities with the acquiescence of the Treasury, with the understanding that the occupancy would be temporary and would be discontinued at request and when Congress adjourned. Other government tracts were seized without permission and occupied by members of the Bonus Army. The number of Bonus Army marchers in Washington at the time of the adjournment of Congress on July 16th has been variously estimated at from 8000 to 15,000. Several thousand left shortly after Congress adjourned, but other groups came in, and at the time of the riot the best estimates are that there were from 6000 to 8000 bonus marchers in the city.
2. The quality of the Bonus Army.
To understand the conditions causing the riot it is necessary to know something of the character of the men in the Bonus Army.
(a) Number of marchers who were not ex-service men. A considerable number of the marchers were not in military service during the World War. An approximation of the number is impossible, but two items of reliable information throw some light on this question.
Prior to the riot of July 28th, 341 members of the Bonus Army had been arrested at various dates for a variety of offenses, including disorderly conduct, parading without a permit, assault with a dangerous weapon, destruction of private property, trespass on private property, and soliciting alms. 17 were arrested by the police on July 28th, and 4 on July 29th, making a total of 362. Unfortunately the police did not fingerprint all of these persons for identification, but 51 of them, including those arrested for disturbing the peace near the White House, were fingerprinted. Of these, 16, or approximately one-third, had no World War service record.

Bonus Army
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bonus Army were the 43,000 marchers—17,000 U.S. World War I veterans, their families, and affiliated groups—who gathered in Washington, D.C. in mid-1932 to demand cash-payment redemption of their service certificates. Organizers called the demonstrators the "Bonus Expeditionary Force", to echo the name of World War I's American Expeditionary Forces, while the media referred to them as the "Bonus Army" or "Bonus Marchers". The contingent was led by Walter W. Waters, a former sergeant.
Many of the war veterans had been out of work since the beginning of the Great Depression. The World War Adjusted Compensation Act of 1924 had awarded them bonuses in the form of certificates they could not redeem until 1945. Each certificate, issued to a qualified veteran soldier, bore a face value equal to the soldier's promised payment compound interest. The principal demand of the Bonus Army was the immediate cash payment of their certificates.
On July 28, U.S. Attorney General William D. Mitchell ordered the veterans removed from all government property. Washington police met with resistance, shots were fired, and two veterans were wounded and later died. President Herbert Hoover then ordered the Army to clear the marchers' campsite. Army Chief of Staff General Douglas MacArthur commanded the infantry and cavalry supported by six tanks. The Bonus Army marchers with their wives and children were driven out, and their shelters and belongings burned.
A second, smaller Bonus March in 1933 at the start of the Roosevelt administration was defused in May with an offer of jobs with the Civilian Conservation Corps at Fort Hunt, Virginia, which most of the group accepted. Those who chose not to work for the CCC by the May 22 deadline were given transportation home. In 1936, Congress overrode President Roosevelt's veto and paid the veterans their bonus nine years early.

3. The 1979 NORAD Computer Glitch
On the morning of November 9, 1979, technicians at the site received an urgent alert that the Soviets had launched a barrage of missiles at North America. Convinced a nuclear attack was imminent, the U.S. air defense program scrambled 10 interceptor fighter planes, ordered the president’s “doomsday plane” to take off, and warned launch control to prepare its missiles for a retaliatory attack.

I don't mean to say, and no one can say to you, that there are no dangers. Of course there are risks, if we are not vigilant. But we do not have to be hysterical. We can be vigilant. We can be Americans. We can stand up and hold up our heads and say: America is the greatest force that *[ KERRY's rational and well-thought out comment: his words are the supersitious and hysterical nonsense of a coward ]* God has ever allowed to exist on His footstool.

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
34th President of the United States: 1953 - 1961
Radio and Television Address to the American People on the State of the Nation.
April 05, 1954
Dwight Eisenhower: For example, we are concerned about the men in the Kremlin. We are concerned about the Atomic Age. We are concerned about the loss of our international friends in exposed areas of the world--the loss of them to the Communist dictatorship. We are worried about Communist penetration of our own country, and we are worried about the possibility of depression, and the loss of jobs among us here at home.
Now, the greater any of these apprehensions, the greater is the need that we look at them clearly, face to face, without fear, like honest, straightforward Americans, so we do not develop the jitters or any other kind of panic, that we do not fall prey to hysterical thinking.
Sometimes you feel, almost, that we can be excused for getting a little bit hysterical, because these dangers come from so many angles, and they are of such different kinds, and no matter what we do they still seem to exist. But underlying all of these dangers is one thing: the threat that We have from without, the great threat imposed upon us by aggressive communism, the atheistic doctrine that believes in statism as against our conception of the dignity of man, his equality before the law--that is the struggle of the ages.
Now, the H-bomb--the H-bomb and the Atomic Age. They are not in themselves a great threat to us. Of course not. The H-bomb is a threat to us only if a potential aggressor, who also has the secrets of the H-bomb, determines to use it against us. And against that, then, we have to make our provisions, to make certain that sensible men have done every possible thing they can to protect ourselves against that threat.
Communism seeks to divide us, to set class against class, good people against good people, when those good people should be standing together in defense of liberty and against communism. Because of that, we must take counsel among ourselves and stand together and let nothing tear us apart.

Eastern European Reforms
Q. Do you think your opinions may have encouraged reform in some of the other countries, such as, maybe, Romania or Czechoslovakia or East Germany, or might there be a backlash -- --
The President. Well, you want to be careful not to conduct yourself in such a way as to encourage a backlash. But I would think that this visit in the neighborhood would be watched by countries where economic and political change are lagging behind Poland and lagging behind Hungary. That isn't true of the Soviet Union, and it isn't true of Yugoslavia. But there are other countries that are probably watching and wondering. I am firmly convinced that this wave of freedom, if you will, is the wave of the future. And I would expect that this visit has been watched by the people of other Eastern European countries and, hopefully, giving encouragement to those who want to go the path of reform -- political change, economic change -- that these other countries are now following.
Q. Do you think they'll feel that talk is cheap from the United States, and what about a little more aid to encourage their reform movement?

October 13, 1989
The President met with Yugoslav Prime Minister Ante Markovic in the Oval Office for approximately a half hour. The President reaffirmed his strong support for Yugoslav independence, unity, and sovereignty. He welcomed Prime Minister Markovic's commitment to market-oriented economic reform and to building democratic pluralism throughout Yugoslavia.
The two leaders discussed the difficult economic and political challenges Yugoslavia faces and ways the industrial democracies might support the Prime Minister's reform program. The President stressed, and Prime Minister Markovic agreed, that implementation of an economic reform program is essential to attracting foreign investment and Yugoslavia's economic recovery. The President thanked Prime Minister Markovic for Yugoslavia's constructive leadership at the nonaligned movement summit in Belgrade last month.
Also present were Secretary of State Baker, national security adviser Scowcroft, Yugoslav Federal Executive Council Member Dzevad Mujezinovic, and Deputy Foreign Minister Milivoje Maksic.

Also, "Salesman." I saw that in a dream while sleeping recently. I saw myself going through an induction process in the United States Marine Corps and I woke up understanding that I was dreaming of my actual experience in 1990. I saw a document that indicated I was being inducted to the United States Marine Corps with the officer grade of Chief Warrant Officer 2. I saw in the dream another document associated with my induction and that document indicated I had been assigned the informal name "Salesman."

50 years ago: Cincy Vietnam protest a calm contrast
Cameron Knight Published 10:31 p.m. ET March 27, 2016 Updated 11:33 a.m. ET March 28, 2016
Sunday marked the 50th anniversary of the "second international days of protest" against the Vietnam War. Marchers across the country clashed with police, but in Cincinnati the scene was quite different.
The protests made the front page of the March 27, 1966, edition of The Enquirer, right underneath a larger report of Marines storming the beaches at the mouth of the Saigon River.
The reports from San Francisco, New York City, Chicago and Washington, D.C. were dramatic.
"A Molotov cocktail was flung against the headquarters of a marching group before 30,000 persons swung out down New York's Fifth Avenue in the largest of the anti-war demonstrations throughout the nation," a United Press International reporter wrote.
In the Big Apple, 1,000 police officers were needed to contain the marchers and a group of 300 counter-protesters, who stormed the crowd and started fist fights. In other cities, marchers were pelted with rotten eggs and spat upon by those supporting the war.
The protesters themselves were described as a diverse group including "smartly dressed grandmothers," "beatniks," "bemedaled war veterans" and "bearded advocates of sexual freedom."
Tucked in amongst the description of the nationwide chaos was a single paragraph describing the scene in Cincinnati.
"In Cincinnati, about 20 people gathered in the biting wind on Garfield Place and then paraded, using the sidewalk, to the Federal Building on Fifth Street. They carried placards proclaiming 'Mourning the Dead in Vietnam' and wore black sashes. There was no trouble," the report stated.

She going to get a motel?
'Cause I'd like to get in on that.
Ronnie, would you take this to section three?
Check the stock for dog food.

Then finish stacking the potatoes. Come on. Let's go. Let's do some work for a change.

Remarks on Human Cloning Prohibition Legislation
April 10, 2002
Well, thank you all so very much for coming to the White House. It's my honor to welcome you to the people's house.
I particularly want to honor three folks who I had the honor of meeting earlier— Joni Tada, Jim Kelly, and Steve McDonald. I want to thank you for your courage; I want to thank you for your wisdom; I want to thank you for your extraordinary perseverance and faith. They have triumphed in the face of physical disability and share a deep commitment to medicine that is practiced ethically and humanely.
All of us here today believe in the promise of modern medicine. We're hopeful about where science may take us. And we're also here because we believe in the principles of ethical medicine. As we seek to improve human life, we must always preserve human dignity. And therefore, we must prevent human cloning by stopping it before it starts.

I have also been remembering that time in Ashdown High School when I was running for Class President. Consistent with Tapesty, I was elected my Junior year, but did not get elected my Senior. I was campaigning hard for re-election though, explaining to all that they should vote for experience.

#8 My opponent's youth and inexperience
"I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience."
October 21, 1984: In the second presidential debate with candidate Walter Mondale, Reagan was grilled over his age by Henry "Hank" Trewhitt of the Baltimore Sun. "You already are the oldest President in history, and some of your staff say you were tired after your most recent encounter with Mr. Mondale. I recall, yes, that President Kennedy, who had to go for days on end with very little sleep during the Cuba missile crisis. Is there any doubt in your mind that you would be able to function in such circumstances?" Reagan replied, "Not at all, Mr. Trewhitt and I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience."

First ATM opens for business
On this day in 1969, America's first automatic teller machine (ATM) makes its public debut, dispensing cash to customers at Chemical Bank in Rockville Center, New York.

I also wonder who Chad Trammel is supposed to represent.
Trammel, when I saw him in '94 at our 10 year reunion, was a lawyer in the Air Force.
Back in '94, when I told him I was repairing ATM machines, he asked me if I ever thought about doing something else, as though he expected me to be doing more.

EPISODE RECAP
After being told that Ferguson's Wax Museum is closing, Martin convinces the owner to allow him to take five wax figures that have special meaning for him. They are five mass murderers. After they come to life and kill his wife, her brother and Mr. Ferguson, Martin tells them he is going to destroy them. They come alive and tell him that it is he, not them, that killed these people. Later, at a museum, a guide is explaining the details of the murders these men committed when he comes to a new exhibit. It depicts a man who killed his wife, brother-in-law and employer - it's Martin Lombard Senescu!

RIKER: We are on the Bridge. There's a good chance this is our ship. Looks like you're the leader.
WORF: Perhaps we should not jump to conclusions. I am decorated as well.
PICARD: It seems to me that determining leadership is not crucial right now. We need to find out who we are and well, what we're doing out here.
MACDUFF: But how did this happen? What did this to us?
LAFORGE: Better still, who did this to us? I've got some intermittent sensor readings here. The scan keeps repeating itself like it's stuck, but it looks like there's metallic debris right in front of us. Distance, seventeen kilometres.
RIKER: The remains of another ship?
LAFORGE: That's a good possibility.
WORF: Perhaps we were engaged in battle.
MACDUFF: If they stunned us with some type of bioelectric field that could have wiped out our memories.
RO: Then we fired back, destroyed them.
PICARD: But if that presumption is correct, then we could have sustained other damage. Um, Computer, status report.
RIKER: No voice interface.
LAFORGE: No interface, period. Hey. Got something. I've accessed the basic system directories.
PICARD: Can we get a general status report?
LAFORGE: Life support systems throughout the ship are fully operational. Navigation, propulsion offline.
RO: What about communications?
LAFORGE: Completely disrupted.
RO: That rules out a distress signal.
RIKER: If we even knew where to send it.
PICARD: Do we have an onboard communications system?
LAFORGE: We do now.
PICARD: Lets use it. This ship must have a crew. They may still have their memories.
RO: We should be careful what we say. There could be a boarding party somewhere on the ship.
WORF: Bridge to all personnel. Select a representative from your group to contact the Bridge and report on your status.

May 1966
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The following events occurred in May 1966:
May 19, 1966 (Thursday)
The XB-70 Valkyrie strategic bomber became the first vehicle to hold a sustained (more than half an hour) in excess of Mach 3. Literally moving faster than a speeding bullet, at three times the speed of sound, the six-engine jet aircraft was flown at its "triplesonic" speed of more than 2,000 miles per hour for 32 minutes by test pilot Al White of North American Aviation, and his co-pilot, USAF Colonel Joe Cotton. Friction from the air heated the outside of the aircraft to 620 degrees Fahrenheit. As the plane returned to Edwards Air Force Base in California, the two pilots discovered that the landing gear would not lower because of a short circuit; Colonel Cotton reportedly "used a paper clip to short circuit an electrical terminal" to lower the gear, sparing the crew from having "to bail out and abandon the $500 million craft".

WORF: Captain, we have crossed the Lysian border.
PICARD: Take us out of warp, Ensign. Go to three quarters impulse.
RO: Yes, sir.
PICARD: Mister Worf, maintain a continuous sensor sweep.
WORF: Aye, sir.
MACDUFF: How long till we reach their central command?
DATA: At our current speed, approximately thirty seven hours.
WORF: Captain, I am picking up a vessel directly ahead.
PICARD: Can you identify it, Mister Data?
DATA: The ship matches the Starfleet description of a Lysian destroyer. A short range attack vessel with disruptor style weapons, and a standard crew of fifty three.
WORF: Within visual range.
PICARD: On screen.
(it's just like the first ship they encountered)
WORF: The destroyer is increasing its speed. They are moving to intercept.
PICARD: Evasive manoeuvre sequence delta.
RO: Yes, sir.
WORF: They are matching our manoeuvres.
MACDUFF: Activating phaser arrays. Ready to fire, sir.
PICARD: Stand by.
MACDUFF: Captain, our orders were to destroy all Lysian warships.
PICARD: I'm aware of that, Commander. Tactical analysis, Mister Data.
DATA: The destroyer has minimal shields. Their disruptor capacity appears to be only two point one megajoules.
RIKER: They're no match for the Enterprise.
DATA: Captain, the destroyer is hailing us.
PICARD: Open a channel.
MACDUFF: No! Their new weapon. Whatever it was that erased out our computers and our memories, maybe this is how they do it, over communication channels.
DATA: It is conceivable, sir.
TROI: It's also possible that they just want to talk to us. I think we should respond.
WORF: Captain, the ship is hailing us again.
MACDUFF: If you're wrong, it could mean our destruction. We can't take the risk, Captain.
DATA: The Lysians have stopped transmitting, Captain. They are powering up their disruptors. They have locked onto us, sir.
RIKER: Full shields.
WORF: Shields up.
MACDUFF: Captain?
PICARD: Return fire.
(KaBOOM)
WORF: The ship has been destroyed.

Have you ever heard coyotes in the woods howling at night? I heard them a lot back when I lived in Ashdown. We would often go out in the woods at night and let the hunting dogs my step-father raised run around the woods chasing other animals. Sometimes they would chase a coyote and they told me the sound of the dogs barking was different when chasing a coyote.

RONALD REAGAN
40th President of the United States: 1981 - 1989
Address to the Nation on Defense and National Security
March 23, 1983
This strategy of deterrence has not changed. It still works. But what it takes to maintain deterrence has changed. It took one kind of military force to deter an attack when we had far more nuclear weapons than any other power; it takes another kind now that the Soviets, for example, have enough accurate and powerful nuclear weapons to destroy virtually all of our missiles on the ground. Now, this is not to say that the Soviet Union is planning to make war on us. Nor do I believe a war is inevitable-quite the contrary. But what must be recognized is that our security is based on being prepared to meet all threats.
There was a time when we depended on coastal forts and artillery batteries, because, with the weaponry of that day, any attack would have had to come by sea. Well, this is a different world, and our defenses must be based on recognition and awareness of the weaponry possessed by other nations in the nuclear age.
We can't afford to believe that we will never be threatened. There have been two world wars in my lifetime. We didn't start them and, indeed, did everything we could to avoid being drawn into them. But we were ill-prepared for both. Had we been better prepared, peace might have been preserved.
For 20 years the Soviet Union has been accumulating enormous military might. They didn't stop when their forces exceeded all requirements of a legitimate defensive capability. And they haven't stopped now. During the past decade and a half, the Soviets have built up a massive arsenal of new strategic nuclear weapons—weapons that can strike directly at the United States.
"Joe Biden has truly lost his basketball" would have been funnier.
