This morning I really wanted to ride out on my bicycle on another excursion but it's now August In Spokane and the New Normal in these modern times has us at the nation's worst air-quality because of wildfire smoke, harking back to what life was probably like around here 100 years ago and earlier.
Thinking of my recent excursion to downtown Spokane and my enlightened experience, I wanted to ride to Coeur d'Alene, stand there as I did in the 878 days, and wonder what observations I would make.
This morning, with the distant mountain range that separates Spokane Valley from Coeur d'Alene baked in a haze of wildfire smoke, classified by authorities as unhealthy, that I don't want my crippled-by-this-desk lungs to exert themselves on, I decided now is a good time to conduct another experiment here at my desk.
I'm going to watch an episode of "Stargate SG-1." I've conducted similar experiments with titles I don't now recall leaving me only with a sense of success I cannot now recall the details about to describe that feeling of success.
I never followed that television series "Stargate SG-1" that began in 1997, following the 1994 theatre feature "Stargate". I passed also on the 2004 television series "Stargate: Atlantis". I did follow most of the episodes of the 2009 "Stargate: Universe" when it was active on television.
By now I've watched on video most if not all of the 4 seasons of "Stargate: Atlantis". But "SG-1" ran for 10 years and I have watched only of a few of those episodes.
Today I decided to make a random choice of an episode to watch from "SG-1".
This morning I decided to start with Season 7. I scanned through the list and selected Season 7 episode 15 titled "Chimera".
After making that selection, that's a keyword I found several times in my blog archive file but it wasn't instantly recognizable by me. I don't think I've I ever before watched that episode. I didn't find any references to it in my past blog posts. I didn't recognize that word from any posts I made in the past. Searching my blog archive file for past references to the premiere date for "Stargate SG-1" "Chimera" I found: 1/30/2004 ( premiere US film "You Got Served" ).
Now I'm going to watch that episode that is 1 episode among 214 episodes for SG-1 and see what turns up.
And if you have an opinion then shut the hell up because, while I don't know who's reading my blog posts, I suspect most of you are pathetic morons.
Episode begins.
I wasn't looking at the premiere dates when I made the random selection. If you had asked me *before* I made the selection for season 7 and had asked me to name the year that season was active on television then I would have had no response. I would have had to think consciously for a moment to arrive, now after the fact, at the year 2004. Only after watching half the video did the thought come to my mind consciously that this episode was precisely 7 days before my final day of full-time employment at Microsoft Corporation and my escape on the interstate for hours through the night to the east.
And the episode ends.
Well, in terms of an experiment, it's 100% failure.
Failure because of one specific detail I was watching for I decided on before I began watching the episode.
I shall not publish here that detail I was watching for. Because it could have been anything, in terms of some other person lurking out there reading my posts. They'll never know what I was watching for. I didn't see it. So I call the experiment failure.
Compelling, however, is my understanding of the term 'chimera'.
Before today, before a few hours ago if you had asked me: Kerry, define chimera.
I would have zero response. I would have had no words. I could not have told you the very first thing about 'chimera'.
It's a word in my blog a few times but it's a noise word for me. I had no interest in memorizing its meaning. I didn't care what it meant enough to remember it.
Makes this experiment interesting. 214 episodes and that's the one I chose as the reference point to my recent excursion to downtown Spokane, as published here recently by me.
BUT THEN I worked more on this note over the hours. And then I did prove it. I found an example to accompany my illustration from 08/03/2019. Precisely the sort of example I was watching for from before I started watching randomly this episode that I had never before watched or studied.

TEAL'C
Since your friend Sarah was taken as a host by Osiris, you have been unable to save her. Perhaps that is the focus of your subconscious desires.
DANIEL
(thinking)
You think something I knew when I was ascended could help?
TEAL'C
Most often dreams are merely the mind's way of dealing with desires that cannot be fulfilled.
DANIEL
Oh. So basically, I'm destined to never going to get a good night's sleep ever again.
TEAL'C
Knowing your past experiences, Daniel Jackson, I do not know how you have slept well before now.

The Chimera (Greek: ChÃmaira "she-goat") according to Greek mythology, was a monstrous fire-breathing hybrid creature of Lycia in Asia Minor, composed of the parts of more than one animal. It is usually depicted as a lion, with the head of a goat protruding from its back, and a tail that might end with a snake's head. It was one of the offspring of Typhon and Echidna and a sibling of such monsters as Cerberus and the Lernaean Hydra.
The term "chimera" has come to describe any mythical or fictional animal with parts taken from various animals, or to describe anything composed of very disparate parts, or perceived as wildly imaginative, implausible, or dazzling.

Popov gave him a last look-sure that it would be the last, despite what he'd just said. Grady's eyes were animated now, thinking about a revolutionary demonstration that would be the capstone of his career. There was a cruelty there that Popov had not noted before. Like Furchtner and Dortmund, this was a predatory animal rather than a human being, and, as much experience as he'd had with such people, Popov found himself troubled by it. He was supposed to be skilled at reading minds, but in this one he saw only emptiness, only the absence of human feelings, replaced by ideology that led him-where? Did Grady know? Probably not. He thought himself on the path to some Radiant Future-the term most favored by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union-but the light that beckoned him was far more distant than he realized, and its bright glow hid the holes in the road immediately before him. And truly, Popov thought on, were he ever to achieve that which he wanted, then he'd be a disaster as a ruler of men, like those he resembled-Stalin, Mao, and the rest-so divorced from the common man's outlook as to be an alien, for whom life and death were mere tools to achieve his vision, not something of humanity at all. Of all the things Karl Marx had given the world, surely that outlook was the worst. Sean Grady had replaced his humanity and emotions with a geometrically precise model of what the world should be and he was too wedded to that vision to take note of the fact that it had failed wherever it had been tried. His pursuit was one after a chimera, a creature not real, never quite within reach, but drawing him onward to his own destruction-and as many others as he might kill first. And his eyes sparkled now in his enthusiasm for the chase. His ideological soundness denied him the ability to see the world as it really was-as even the Russians had come to see, finally, after seventy years of following the same chimera. Sparkling eyes serving a blind master, how strange, the Russian thought, turning to leave.
