What was my jersey number when I played little league? That was before I started playing football. I think it was '10' but not sure. I played for the team in De Queen that was sponsored by the Mountaire chicken plant. I don't remember anyone ever kidding us about that though. I also remember our first game beating the other team that was considered the best to play for. I think they were the Rotary Lions. I used to always get on base because no one could pitch to left-handers and I would either get hit or get walked.

Was I with the Blue Angels ????

excerpt from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: August 4, 2006

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Angels

Today is a very special and memorable day in your military career that will remain with you throughout your lifetime. You have survived the ultimate test of your peers and have proven to be completely deserving to wear the crest of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels.

The prestige of wearing the Blue Angels uniform carries with it an extraordinary honor — one that reflects not only on you as an individual, but on your teammates and the entire squadron. To the crowds at the air shows and to the public at hospitals and schools nationwide, you are a symbol of the Navy and Marine Corps' finest. You bring pride, hope and a promise for tomorrow's Navy and Marine Corps in the smiles and handshakes of today's youth. Remember today as the day you became a Blue Angel; look around at your teammates and commit this special bond to memory. "Once a Blue Angel, always a Blue Angel," rings true for all those who wear the crest of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. Welcome to the team.

excerpt from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: August 5, 2006

That article in yesterday's Seattle Times indicated that there have been 231 pilots and 31 flight leders/commanding officers since the Blue Angels formed in 1946. Some of those flight leaders/CO's would have probably started as pilots so I don't think that means there have been 262 individual members, but something less than 262.

I've been wondering about this one scar on my left forearm. It seems to be located in a position to indicate getting shot by someone in front of me.

excerpt from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: 11/18/2006 10:32 PM

I was probably flying with the Blue Angels when I was a Midshipman, as I have written, and I might have been the Commanding Officer at some point.

Shuttle Endeavour Blasts Off on Difficult Maiden Flight : Science: The mission includes three spacewalks, practice for space station assembly and rescue of a communications satellite.

May 08, 1992 ROBERT W. STEWART TIMES STAFF WRITER

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. — Dodging gusty winds and threatening thunderstorms, the shuttle Endeavour, the nation's newest orbiter, found a hole in the clouds Thursday and blasted off on its maiden voyage.

Los Angeles Times

Family, Friends Always Knew That He Would Go Far : Space shuttle: Now Kevin Chilton's mom and dad are heading to Cape Canaveral to give the NASA pilot a big send-off for the maiden voyage of Endeavour.

May 03, 1992 BERNICE HIRABAYASHI TIMES STAFF WRITER

WESTCHESTER — Jim and Shirley Chilton of Westchester are off to Florida for a vacation. The Epcot Center and the golf, however, will be little more than distractions. The main event will be a visit to Cape Canaveral, where on Thursday their son, Kevin, is scheduled to blast off aboard the space shuttle Endeavour.

"We're just thrilled to be a part of it," Jim Chilton said. "This mission will contribute to science and mankind."

Kevin Chilton, 37, has been selected as the pilot of Endeavour for its maiden voyage. The new craft, named for the ship commanded by the 18th-Century British explorer Capt. James Cook, replaces the shuttle Challenger, which was destroyed in the 1986 explosion that killed six astronauts and teacher Christa McAuliffe.

"It isn't very often that a high school (has a) graduate in the astronaut program," Peterson said.

There is also that memory I have written about before where I climbed up on Randy Romine's 100 foot HAM radio antenna. One time I went up there with my first model rocket, the one that was fashioned as R2D2 from Star Wars. Then it dawned on me a few hours later: Of course! R2D2 is shaped a lot like the external fuel tank and the solid-rocket boosters for the space shuttle.

excerpt from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: July 30, 2006

Randy Romine bought that Pontiac Bonneville for my mom. I think that was '77 or '78. I'm pretty sure it was a 1978 model. Funny story about the ride back. It's funny how they throw little things like into my memory. I threw a temper tantrum to ride back to De Queen, they got it in Texarkana, about 55 miles away, because my sister was going to ride with mom in the new car while I rode with Randy. We stopped before we got out of Texarkana and let me ride with mom because I was being such a baby.

I made a list today of the step-fathers I remember my mother being married to, it seems important. My father was a truck driver. She remarried to a guy named James who was a U.S. Marine. I think he went back into the service after they married and then we moved around to the bases he was stationed at. I think first we went to Santa Ana. I think that is where the El Toro base is at. Then we were at a base in McAlester, OK, where I think he was a guard. She then married Dale Parker, the guy who was electrocuted. He was some kind of hospital worker when they got married and then went on to work in construction, building houses. We were living with his parents for a while. I remember mowing their lawn one day and getting the notion to carve out some kind of message in the grass that people above in aircraft could read. Then she married the Vietnam veteran. He was a pretty nice guy when he was sober, but when he got drunk he was beserk.

the doctors had told Randy he would never walk again because he had stepped on a landmine. I am thinking he stepped on three landmines. I can "remember" finding his three Purple Hearts stored away on the top shelf of the closet in my bedroom.

Jeremy Michael Boorda

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jeremy Michael Boorda (November 26, 1939 – May 16, 1996) was a United States Navy admiral who served as the 25th Chief of Naval Operations. Boorda is notable for being the first American sailor to have risen through the enlisted ranks to become the Chief of Naval Operations, the highest-ranking billet in the United States Navy.

Naval career

Boorda dropped out of high school to enlist in the United States Navy in 1956 at the age of 17; it provided a structure he at first disliked but came to appreciate. He finished high school while in the Navy and attained the rate of Personnelman First Class.

Boorda was selected for potential commissioning under the Integration Program in 1962, by which enlisted sailors were admitted to the navy's Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. Boorda was commissioned as an ensign upon graduating in August 1962.

Seaman to Admiral

Boorda was a product of an enlisted-to-officer commissioning program in the early 1960s. This program known as the Integration Program was designed to provide an opportunity for enlisted personnel who possessed outstanding qualifications and motivation for a naval career to obtain a commission. Boorda was the first Chief of Naval Operations to have risen from the enlisted rates, one of only four such modern service chiefs (the others being Air Force General Larry D. Welch, General Alfred Gray, USMC and Army General John Shalikashvili). Upon assuming this position, Boorda immediately re-established the historic program, naming it "Seaman to Admiral", as part of a STA-21 initiative for young sailors to earn their commission and become naval officers. Boorda believed "people should have the opportunity to excel, and be all they can be, even if they don't get a perfect or traditional start."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Michael_Boorda

Jeremy Michael Boorda

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boorda was reported to have been distraught over a media investigation led by decorated U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran David Hackworth of Newsweek, into two miniature bronze letter "V" (valor) devices which Boorda had worn for years on two of his uniform's service ribbons (in the Army, the "V" Device is worn on a ribbon to denote a specific decoration was awarded for valor in combat, and in the Navy and Marine Corps, the Combat "V" is worn on a ribbon to denote a specific decoration was awarded for heroism in combat or direct exposure to combat). Photographs of Boorda in uniform showed him wearing the "V" devices on his Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal ribbons in the 1980s. However, Boorda stopped wearing the two "V" devices on these two service ribbons about a year before the Hackworth investigation, after Boorda had been informed by the Navy that he was not authorized to wear them.

Former CNO Elmo Zumwalt, who was Boorda's commander during the Vietnam War and who verbally authorized Combat "V"s for Boorda and many other sailors, wrote a letter to the effect that Boorda's wearing of the devices was "appropriate, justified and proper." However, wearing the Navy's Combat Distinguishing Device (Combat "V") on a specific decoration that may authorize the device requires written authorization for the device on a printed award citation.
