Khrushchev has also shown a penchant for clever stratagems designed to entrap and confuse opponents and to increase pressures on them to grant concessions. His exploitation of the U–2 incident was intended to produce a storm of protests against US policy and to embarrass President Eisenhower on the eve of the Paris summit conference. Khrushchev confined his initial announcement of the shoot-down to bare details and then sat back to await the expected disavowal from Washington. After the US issued the cover story of a missing NASA research U–2, Khrushchev announced that he had withheld information that the pilot and aircraft were in Soviet hands, “because had we told everything at once, the Americans would have invented another version; just look how many silly things they have said.”

This week in history: Russia leader Nikita Khrushchev reveals the U-2 Incident
By Cody Carlson
For the Deseret News
Published: Wednesday, May 8 2013 5:06 p.m. MDT
On May 7, 1960, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev announced that CIA pilot Francis Gary Powers had survived being shot down by Soviet anti-aircraft weapons. In doing so the Soviets exposed that the United States had been spying on Russia and that President Dwight D. Eisenhower had lied to cover it up.
In the mid 1950s the United States began flying the Lockheed U-2 “Dragon Lady” on reconnaissance flights over the Soviet Union. The plane operated at very high altitudes, and carried an array of cameras and scientific equipment. The purpose of the flights was to gather intelligence on Soviet military installations, notably nuclear missile silos and other atomic facilities. The Central Intelligence Agency ran the operation.
Allen Dulles, the director of the CIA, had assured Eisenhower that the Soviets lacked the ability to shoot down a U-2 plane, so the potential for an international incident was negligible. On the off chance that one did crash inside the Soviet Union, however, the CIA equipped its pilots with cyanide capsules so that they would not be taken alive by the Soviets.

Kind of young, ain't you kid, to be riding with this rabble?
Who you calling rabble, you blue scumbelly?
Hell, we showed these boys, anyway.
Lee might have had to surrender, but we didn't.
Shut up, kid.
Yes, sir.
You showed us.
Now get in line... before I kick you so hard you'll wear your ass for a hat.
Here's the man you asked for, sir.
Fletcher. Good to see you.
Senator.
Well done.
Thank you.
What the hell is this Redleg doing here?
You said regular federal authorities would handle this.
Captain Terrill is the regular federal authority now.

Colonel Tigh: Galactica to all civilian ships: commence jumping in sequence.
(The ships pull out past the storm and jump, one by one.)
Gaeta: Incoming ordnance.
(Galactica is hit by two missiles. Fighting continues. Apollo's ship gets hit, and one of the engines is taken out.)
Starbuck: Apollo, do you read me?
(A missile heads right for him. Starbuck takes it out.)
Starbuck: (yells) Whoooo! C'mon, bad (?). Looks like you broke your ship, Apollo.
Apollo: I've had worse. But thanks.
(Galactica takes a few more hits.)
Tigh: Function check on the damage control panel. (Another hit) They're targetting the landing bays. We gotta get those fighters back on board and retract the pods, or we won't be able to jump.
Commander Adama: Fleet status?
Gaeta: Last civilian ship is away.
Adama: Recall all fighters. Stand by to secure landing bays.
Dualla: Galactica to all Vipers: break off, come on home. Repeat: come on home.
Gaeta: FTL? Go. Sublight? Go. Board is green. Ship reports ready for jump as soon as landing bay's secure, sir.
(Another missile hits.)
Dualla: Two Vipers still out there, sir. Starbuck and Apollo.
Tigh: We can't stand toe-to-toe with those base ships. (on intercom) Retract the pods.
(Pods retract.)
Adama: I can't leave them here. Patch me through to Starbuck. (on radio) What do you hear? Starbuck, Galactica. What do you hear?
Starbuck: What?
Adama: Good morning, Starbuck, what do you hear?
Starbuck: (listening to debris hit the ship) Nothin' but the rain.
Adama: Grab your gun and bring the cat in.

Enlisted Navy Rates
Military.com
Unlike the other U.S. military services, which organize servicemembers according toranks, the Navy organizes its force according to rates, although it also follows the same E-1 to E-9 pay grade structures as the other services. The rate of an enlisted Sailor can be determined by their rating badge, which is a combination of a rate (pay grade) badge of stripes or chevrons, depending on rank, and rating (occupational specialty), represented by the symbol just above the stripes or chevrons on the left sleeve of most uniforms.
Enlisted navy rates are broken down into three levels: Apprenticeships (E-1 through E-3), Petty Officers (E-4 through E-6), and Chief Petty Officers (E-7 through E-9).
PETTY OFFICERS (E-4 THROUGH E-6)
Promotions to the rates of Petty Officer Third Class (E-4) through Chief Petty Officer (E-7) are based on a limited number of vacancies, and are competitive. Advancement examinations for E-4 to E-6 are held every year in March and September, and advancement exams for E7 are conducted annually in January. To be eligible for promotion consideration, the sailor would have to meet the minimum Time in Rate (TIR) requirements for promotion to the next paygrade, your commanding officer's recommendation, and your results in the Navywide Advancement-in-Rate Competition.

(from internet transcript of incomplete dialog)
HOUSE. In someone's house, Elizabeth Weir appears on the television screen. She has recorded a video message for someone.
Dr. Elizabeth WEIR (on the TV): Simon, if you're watching this, it means the President has been kind enough to grant you security clearance. (We see a man, obviously Simon, sitting in the living room of the house and watching the video.) I'm not going on a diplomatic mission to another country. I'm going to another planet in another galaxy by means of a device called the Stargate. Millions of years ago there was a race of beings we call the Ancients.
(As Weir continues to speak, we see various members of the expedition as they spend their last day on Earth. Lieutenant Ford is kissed goodbye by his grandmother, and she and his grandfather make a big fuss of him as he gets into a taxi.)
WEIR: They created a network of these Stargates throughout our galaxy in order to travel freely among their worlds.
(Doctor Beckett is having a last meal with his mother. It looks like she's bringing him a dish of haggis. She puts the dish down as he smiles delightedly, and kisses him on the cheek.)
WEIR: We don't know why, but they left for another galaxy somewhere between five and ten million years ago, taking their entire city along with them.
(Doctor McKay is giving his cat to a neighbour to look after. She is already holding the cat's bowl and a large bag of cat food. McKay strokes the cat one last time, then picks up his bag and walks away.)
WEIR: That city was called Atlantis.
(In a park somewhere, Sheppard is sitting on the grass. He flips a coin into the air, catches it with one hand, slaps it onto the back of his other hand, hesitates for several seconds, then reluctantly looks at the result.)

Harvey Fletcher
AMERICAN PHYSICIST
Harvey Fletcher, (born Sept. 11, 1884, Provo, Utah, U.S.—died July 23, 1981, Provo), U.S. physicist, a leading authority in the fields of psychoacoustics and acoustical engineering.
Fletcher graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, in 1907 and received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Chicago in 1911. In 1916 he joined the staff of Bell Telephone Laboratories, where he worked for 33 years, primarily in the fields of speech, music, and hearing. Much of his work on the fundamentals of psychoacoustics is described in his book Speech and Hearing (1922).
Fletcher’s research group developed and demonstrated two separate but related methods for reproducing sound: binaural sound reproduction and stereophonic reproduction. He and his team gave the first public demonstration of stereophonic sound in 1934 in New York City.
Posted by Kerry Burgess - H.V.O.M at 5:54 AM Friday, November 30, 2007
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereo
Stereophonic sound, commonly called stereo, is the reproduction of sound, using two or more independent audio channels, through a symmetrical configuration of loudspeakers, in such a way as to create a pleasant and natural impression of sound heard from various directions, as in natural hearing. It is often contrasted with monophonic (or "monaural", or just mono) sound, where audio is in the form of one channel, often centered in the sound field (analogous to a visual field).

symmetry
A relationship of characteristic correspondence, equivalence, or identity among constituents of an entity or between different entities: the narrative symmetry of the novel.

In the episode "Thank God It's Doomsday" there are two references to a road leading out of Springfield called the Warren Harding Memorial Throughhole.

This is the information the probe sent back to us. Freeze and enhance. You can clearly see the 'gate on the other side. Both 'gates must have functioned as a doorway between our worlds.

These readings tell us it's an atmospheric match. Barometric pressure, temperature, and most importantly, oxygen.

These markings are different. They don't match the symbols on our 'gate.

That's why we may have to abort. This project is for naught without a reconnaissance mission.

John Bowlby
BRITISH DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGIST AND PSYCHIATRIST
John Bowlby, in full John Mostyn Bowlby, (born February 26, 1907, London, England—died September 2, 1990, Isle of Skye, Scotland), British developmental psychologist and psychiatrist best known as the originator of attachment theory, which posits an innate need in very young children to develop a close emotional bond with a caregiver. Bowlby explored the behavioral and psychological consequences of both strong and weak emotional bonds between mothers and their young children.
Bowlby grew up in an upper-middle-class family in London. His father, a leading surgeon, was often absent. He was cared for primarily by a nanny and nursemaids and did not spend much time with his mother, as was the custom at that time among his class.
In 1918, he and his brother were sent to Lindisfarne, a boarding school. In 1921 he entered the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, where he trained to be a naval officer. He eventually decided to study medicine at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he enrolled in 1925. After two years he changed his focus to psychology, and he graduated in 1928.
After graduating, Bowlby then spent a year as a volunteer teacher at two schools for children with behavioral difficulties, Bedales and Priory Gate. About 1929, Bowlby entered University College Hospital, London, and while in attendance there, he enrolled in the British Psychoanalytic Institute. He started training in adult psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital in London after his 1933 medical qualification. From 1937 to 1940, Bowlby worked as a psychiatrist at the London Child Guidance Clinic, a school for maladjusted children. The school viewed the children’s problems as stemming from past adverse experiences in their families, an approach that struck a chord with Bowlby. In 1946, he joined the staff of the Tavistock Institute in London, where he established a research unit to examine the effects on young children of separation from their primary caregivers. It was at Tavistock that he developed attachment theory, one tenet of which is that very young children who fail to develop close emotional bonds with a caregiver will experience behavioral problems in later life.
One of Bowlby’s coworkers at the clinic was Mary Salter Ainsworth, a Canadian American developmental psychologist who explored and expanded attachment theory through her research. She developed a widely used research instrument (called the Strange Situation) for studying children’s attachment to their mothers under laboratory conditions.
A high point of Bowlby’s career and one that spread his ideas worldwide was his 1951 report, at the invitation of the World Health Organization (WHO), on the mental health of homeless children. Translated into 14 languages, his report highlighted the importance of constant loving care by a mother figure for a young child’s healthy development. Bowlby laid out his more fully developed theory in his well-known three-volume work Attachment and Loss (1969–80).

Episode Summary
The discovery of an outpost, left behind by the Ancients in the most unlikely of places, leads a new Stargate team to the distant Pegasus galaxy. Once there, they discover a planet of humans being decimated by a terrible alien race know as the Wraith.
(from internet transcript of incomplete dialog)
LAB. O'Neill, Daniel, Weir and McKay are there.
Doctor Daniel JACKSON: I figure the Ancients packed up their entire city and left somewhere between five and ten million years ago.
United States Air Force brigadier general Jack O'NEILL: In their ... flying city.
JACKSON: Yes.
(O'Neill tries to hide a smile.)
JACKSON: What?
O'NEILL (smirking): Flying city.
JACKSON: Well, keep in mind this is the race that built the Stargates. They did everything big.
O'NEILL: So why'd they leave?
JACKSON: Why'd they leave? Um, who knows? We know the Ancients on Earth were suffering from a plague. Uh, maybe some of them were trying to start over, seeding life in a new galaxy. Maybe that's what Ancients do. The point is, we know where they went.
O'NEILL: Pegasus.
JACKSON: Yes, it's-it's the name of a dwarf galaxy in the local group.
Dr. Rodney McKAY: After all that time, is there any hope of actually meeting them?
JACKSON: Who knows, but isn't that reason enough to go?

JACKSON: Uh, it's-it's-it's a little more complicated than that.
McKAY: We need the ZedP.M. to power the Gate.
O'NEILL: What?
JACKSON: ZeeP.M. He's, uh, he's Canadian.
O'NEILL (sympathetically to McKay): I'm sorry.
McKAY: The Zero Point Module, General. The, uh, Ancient power source you recovered from Proclarush Taonas and that's now powering the outpost's defences. I have since determined that it generates its enormous power from vacuum energy derived from a self-contained region of subspace time.
O'NEILL: That was a waste of a perfectly good explanation. (He turns to the other two.) The answer's no.

Laughter
American Scientist 84. 1 (Jan-Feb, 1996): 38-47.
Laugh Tracks and Contagion
The use of laughter to evoke laughter or a positive mood is familiar to viewers of situation comedy shows on television. "Laugh tracks" (dubbed-in sounds of laughter) have accompanied most "sitcoms" since 7:00 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time) on September 9, 1950. On that evening the Hank McCune Show -comedy about "a likeable blunderer, a devilish fellow who tries to cut corners only to find himself the sucker" - first used a laugh track to compensate for the absence of a live audience. Despite the fact that the show was short-lived, the television industry discovered the power of laughter to evoke audience laughter. The recording Industry recognized the seductive power of laughter shortly after World War I with the distribution of the OKeh Laugh Record, which consisted of trumpet playing that was intermittently interrupted by laughter It remains one of the most successful novelty records of all time. Acknowledging the commercial potential of this novelty market, Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Woody Herman and Spike Jones all attempted to cash in with laugh records of their own.
In the intervening years social scientists have confirmed that laugh tracks do indeed increase audience laughter and the audience's rating of the humorousness of the comedy material. However, scientists did not consider that, in the absence of a joke or a remark, laughter by itself can evoke laughter. This is a key element in the propagation of contagious laughter.

Nothing today. Maybe I'll hear something tomorrow.
Epic poetry agrees with Tragedy in so far as it is an imitation in verse of characters of a higher type. They differ, in that Epic poetry admits but one kind of metre, and is narrative in form. They differ, again, in their length: for Tragedy endeavours, as far as possible, to confine itself to a single revolution of the sun, or but slightly to exceed this limit; whereas the Epic action has no limits of time.

CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A Look Back: 25 Years Since the Fall of the Berlin Wall
On November 9, 1989, after serving as the symbol of the Cold War for decades, the Berlin Wall fell. Its demise signaled the dawn of change not only in Eastern Europe, but the world.
The Berlin Wall started as a barbed wire fence built by the communist East German state (with approval from the Soviet Union) to stop the flow of refugees from East Berlin into West Berlin. For years, the CIA had predicted the East German government would take stern measures to stop border crossers but did not have tactical forewarning that a barrier would be put up starting on August 13, 1961. Stretching 96 miles long, the fence eventually evolved into the now familiar 12 foot high concrete wall, built in 45,000 separate sections, each four feet wide.
The Berlin Wall divided East Berlin and West Berlin for 28 years, from 1961 until November 1989. Typical for totalitarian states, the East German government declared the Wall to be a necessary defense against Western aggression. In reality, the Wall was intended to stop East Germans from seeking freedom in the West. In 1962, a second barrier was placed 100 yards back, creating a no-man’s land, widely known as the “death strip,” useless for defense against the West but clearly intended to prevent escape. It was booby-trapped with tripwires, offered no cover, and provided a clear field of fire to the watching guards. Even so, some 5,000 East Berliners escaped into the western half of the city. Tragically, an estimated 200 people died trying. Although the East German government always denied having a “shoot to kill” policy, the border guards were told to treat attempted defectors—even women and children—as criminals and stop them by whatever means necessary.
The Wall proved a propaganda disaster for the Soviet bloc as a whole. It became a powerful symbol of communist tyranny that Western leaders, starting with President John F. Kennedy, frequently denounced. In 1987, Ronald Reagan gave his famous speech at the Brandenburg Gate, at which he challenged Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall.”
Two years later, during the summer of 1989, communist Hungary removed its border restrictions with Austria, and in September, more than 13,000 East German tourists in Hungary escaped to Austria. Demonstrations broke out all over East Germany. The long-time leader of East Germany, Erich Honecker, who in January had predicted that the Berlin Wall would stand for “a hundred more years,” resigned on October 18, replaced by Egon Krenz. By November 4, 1989, the protests had increased significantly, with a million people gathered that day in Alexanderplatz in East Berlin. Meanwhile, the wave of refugees leaving East Germany for the West had increased through Czechoslovakia, tolerated by the new Krenz government and the communist regime in Prague.
To ease the complications, the Krenz government decided on November 9, 1989, to allow refugees and even private travelers to exit directly through crossing points between East Germany and West Germany, including West Berlin. The new regulations were to take effect the next day, on November 10, to allow time to inform the border guards. However, no one told the East German government spokesman, who had not been briefed on the situation but simply had been handed a note to announce that East Berliners would be allowed to cross the border with proper permission. He read the note aloud at the end of the conference and, when asked when the regulations would come into effect, he replied, “As far as I know, effective immediately, without delay.” Nobody, including the East German government, knew that on November 9, 1989, the Wall would start coming down.
Tens of thousands of East Berliners heard the spokesman’s statement live on East German television and soon flooded the checkpoints in the Wall, demanding entry into West Berlin. The surprised and overwhelmed border guards tried to call their superiors, but no East German official was willing to take personal responsibility for issuing orders to use lethal force. Faced with the swelling crowd, the guards finally yielded, opening the checkpoints and allowing people through with little or no identity checking. Ecstatic East Berliners were soon greeted by West Berliners on the other side in a celebration of freedom and reunion. As a result, November 9 is considered the date the Wall fell.
In the days and weeks that followed, people came to the Wall with sledgehammers to chip off souvenir pieces. The first concrete section of the Wall was removed on the 12th. By June 13, 1990 the wall was officially dismantled, and on October 3, 1990 East and West Germany were reunified. The collapse of the Soviet Union would soon follow.
While it is often repeated by some that the CIA and the US Intelligence Community (IC) missed the fall of the Soviet Union, assessments from the time tell a different story. With the demise of the Berlin Wall and the Soviet system in crisis, the CIA in 1989 assessed the Soviet Union under Gorbachev would not survive. In 1990, the IC released a National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), in which it stated, “the Soviet Union as we have known it is finished.(PDF)” (The NIE is an assessment by as many as 17 government agencies and departments regarding a national, regional or transnational issue of high importance, such as the Soviet Union, and is normally briefed to the President and other very senior officials). By the spring of 1991, the CIA warned of a future coup against Gorbachev, how it would take place, and the likelihood of the Soviet Union’s collapse—all accurate predictions of what happened soon after. On December 25, 1991, Gorbachev resigned and the Soviet Union ceased to exist

JAFFA
It is a simple matter. Lord Svarog has claimed Latona as part of his domain. Your conquest will happen as sure as the sun will rise. Accept that and you may live to serve him.
MARUL
My people have no desire to serve anyone.
JAFFA
When Svarog rains fire from the sky, they will beg for his mercy. And offer him their devotion.
MARUL
No they will not.
JAFFA
They will, when those around them begin to die. This is my last warning.
MARUL
Your Lord Svarog should not come. The Sentinel will send him away. You will all be sent away.
JAFFA
So you have said, for three days. Yet here I stand. The Sentinel is nothing more than a legend.

O'NEILL
Oh, yes.

One of several planets visited by the NID while running their offworld program.
O'NEILL
Right.

Major Benton has spent several months trying to negotiate access to the defensive weapon they call the Sentinel. It's supposed to be capable of defending their entire planet.

INT—A PRISON
[Grieves is led into room by two guards to a table at which O'Neill is seated.
GRIEVES
What do you want, O'Neill?
O'NEILL
P2A-018. A device called the Sentinel.
GRIEVES
What about it?
O'NEILL
I need to know what you did to screw it up and what I need to do to fix it.
GRIEVES
I'm more inclined to tell you where to shove it.
O'NEILL
As we speak, SG-9 is either pinned down by the Goa'uld or dead, so let's just cut the crap, okay?
GRIEVES
How is this my problem?
O'NEILL
You're responsible. Zero one eight is defenceless because of you.
GRIEVES
Earth is defenceless because of you. You don't seem to have a problem with that.
O'NEILL
You stole technology from our allies. If I hadn't shut you down, they would have.
GRIEVES
Do you really think the Asgard or the Tok'ra will really rush to our defence when the Goa'uld finally decide to stomp on us? That day is coming, Colonel. Don't kid yourself.

I find myself thinking about this time a long time ago. I may have been in the 4th grade at the time, I don't remember. One of us, maybe me, accidentally made up the fold-out sofa bed with the dog still in it. She stayed in there all day. I came home from school and sat down on the sofa wondering where she was. Then I started hearing her faintly crying out, but I couldn't tell where the sound was coming from. This other neighbor kid was sitting on the couch too, we had to have been crushing her. Eventually I realized she was inside the couch and let her out. She jumped out and ran to the water bowl. I can certainly understand how that dog must have felt.

There was one day I was sitting there in that homeless shelter in Seattle’s Pioneer Square and the thought occurred to me that I had never actually lived at any of the addresses as I “remembered” any of it. One of the first clues I started to research was to find out if there was any special meaning to the name Wexford other than what I actually “remembered.” Even before I discovered the source of the name Wexford – relative to the U.S. Navy – I knew it was going to be something profound. Even before the page came up describing that County Wexford, Ireland, was the birth place of John Barry, I knew it was going to mean something very important to me. John Barry, in some sources, is considered the father of the U.S. Navy and I have also read that he was given the first officer’s commission in the U.S. Navy. From there, I was equally puzzled over why I later lived off a road named Dresden that was near a park named Sheffield.

Professor FARNSWORTH
Let me show you around. That's my lab table and this is my work-stool. And over there is my intergalactic spaceship! And here's where I keep assorted lengths of wire.

INSIDE THE BARRIER. John is sitting by a small fire. He now has a full beard. He activates his radio.
SHEPPARD: I've rationed what little I have for as long as I could but I have enough left for maybe one more day. (He sighs.) I've gotta get myself something to live on while I find my own source of food and water. (Sarcastically) Not that I didn't appreciate the three canteens of water and the whole handful of power bars. (He sighs again.) There's nothing in the immediate area. I'm gonna have to go further out. Um, I'm giving you an indication of where I go, as I go. (He looks frustrated.) Sheppard out. (Angrily, he throws the radio across the cave, then picks up his P90 and starts to kick the fire out. Once it's out, he cocks his gun, switches on the light on top of it and, aiming it cautiously, heads out.)
