Project Orion
The Orion workers had produced a new, "first generation" design that abandoned ground launch and instead would have been boosted into orbit as a Saturn V upper stage. The core of the vehicle was a 200,000-pound "propulsion module" with a pusher-plate diameter of 33 feet, limited by the diameter of the Saturn. This design limitation also restricted Isp to from 1800 to 2500 seconds (39). While disappointingly low by nuclear- pulse standards, this figure still far exceeded those of other nuclear rocket designs. The shock absorber system had two sections: a primary unit made up of toroidal pneumatic bags located directly behind the pusher plate, and a secondary unit of four telescoping shocks (like those on a car) connecting the pusher plate assembly to the rest of the spacecraft (40).
How many Saturn V's would have been required to put this vehicle into orbit? Dyson says one or two (41); a simple inspection of published drawings indicates at least two, possibly three if the crew module (with crew aboard) was intended to be flown separately (42). In this case, some assembly would have been done on-orbit.

Apollo Lunar Module
The Apollo Lunar Module was the lander portion of the Apollo spacecraft built for the US Apollo program by Grumman to achieve the transit from cislunar orbit to the surface and back. The module was also known as the LM from the manufacturer designation (often pronounced "lem," from NASA's early name for it, Lunar Excursion Module).
The module was designed to carry a crew of two and rested on four landing legs. It consisted of two stages—the descent stage module and the ascent stage.
The Apollo Lunar Module came into being because NASA chose to reach the moon via lunar orbit rendezvous (LOR) instead of by direct ascent or Earth orbit rendezvous (EOR). White House leak allegation 'very serious'

WASHINGTON — President Bush's chief spokesman said yesterday that the allegation that administration officials leaked the name of a CIA operative is "a very serious matter" and vowed that Bush would fire anybody responsible for such actions.
Sources said Wilson's wife is a clandestine operations officer for the CIA, currently out of the field and working on weapons of mass destruction.
At a forum held last month by Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Wash., Wilson said: "I don't think we're going to let this drop. At the end of the day it's of keen interest to me to see whether or not we can get Karl Rove frogmarched out of the White House in handcuffs. And trust me when I use that name. I measure my words."
Wilson said yesterday that he believes Rove "at a minimum condoned the leak" but said he has no direct evidence Rove originated the leak. Wilson said that based on statements reporters made to him, he believes Rove participated in calls that drew attention to his wife's occupation after Novak's column ran. "My knowledge is based on a reporter who called me right after he had spoken to Rove and said that Rove had said my wife was fair game," Wilson said.

Ex-CIA agent Valerie Plame settles scores in new memoir

WASHINGTON — In a new memoir, former CIA officer Valerie Plame Wilson recounts her shock as she watched then-Secretary of State Colin Powell, appearing before the United Nations on the eve of war, deliver what she knew to be a flawed portrait of the intelligence on Iraq.
"It was a powerful presentation," she wrote, "but I knew key parts of it were wrong."
At the time, Wilson served in an elite branch of the CIA charged with investigating Iraq's suspected weapons programs. In July 2003, four months after the invasion, her name and covert status were disclosed by the Bush administration to members of the media, setting off a leak inquiry that reached inside the White House and ended at the vice president's office.
The disclosures were part of a White House effort to rebut criticism of the Iraq war by her husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson. No one was charged with the leak of her name, but Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, was convicted of lying to investigators and obstructing the investigation.
In her book, Wilson said that she had neither supported nor opposed the Iraq invasion but that over time, as U.S. casualties mounted, she came to regret it.
She and her colleagues, she wrote, believed that Saddam Hussein was hiding chemical and biological weapons, which she feared would be used against U.S. troops. But there was scant evidence to support those concerns, and she was certain that the president and his aides were publicly exaggerating the nuclear threat posed by Iraq at the time.
"What we struggled so hard to obtain was much too thin and not nearly robust enough to start a war over," she asserts in "Fair Game: My Life as a Spy, My Betrayal by the White House." The book, published by Simon & Schuster, is scheduled to go on sale Monday.
The title refers to a comment attributed to Karl Rove, who during his tenure as a White House adviser reportedly told a journalist that "Joe Wilson's wife is fair game" for a White House intent on discrediting the former ambassador. Wilson became a target after revealing he had investigated and refuted reports that Iraq had tried to buy uranium from Niger.

Nearly a quarter of the 217 people on the EgyptAir jetliner that crashed Sunday were part of a U.S. group set to tour Egypt and the Nile.
Grand Circle Corp., with headquarters in Boston, said 54 people - all over the age of 50 - had signed on for the 14-day trip and "all indications" were they were on board.
Most came from Colorado, Arizona and the Pacific Northwest.
The company specializes in travel for senior citizens, leading more than 50,000 older Americans on trips each year.
A Texas woman was identified as a passenger on the flight. Mary Lou Sterner, 66, of Brownsville, was on a tour trip, said her son Mark Brouillette of Minnetonka, Minn. It was not clear if she was with the Grand Circle group.
The airline said there were nearly 130 Americans aboard the flight.

Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (2 May 1892 – 21 April 1918), widely known as the Red Baron, was a German fighter pilot with the Imperial German Army Air Service (Luftstreitkräfte) during World War I. He is considered the ace-of-aces of that war, being officially credited with 80 air combat victories, more than any other pilot.
On 23 November 1916, Richthofen downed his most famous adversary, British ace Major Lanoe Hawker VC, described by Richthofen himself as "the British Boelcke". The victory came while Richthofen was flying an Albatros D.II and Hawker was flying a D.H.2. Hawker was killed instantly by a spray of bullets fired by Richthofen, one of which struck Hawker in the head as he attempted to escape from over enemy lines. After this combat, Richthofen was convinced he needed a fighter aircraft with more agility, even at a loss of speed. He switched to the Albatros D.III in January 1917, scoring two victories before suffering an inflight crack in the spar of the aircraft's lower wing on 24 January. Richthofen reverted to the Albatros D.II or Halberstadt D.II for the next five weeks. On 6 March, he was shot down without injury by Edwin Benbow. Richthofen then scored a victory in the Albatros D.II on 9 March, but since his Albatros D.III was grounded for the rest of the
month, Richthofen switched again to a Halberstadt D.II.
He returned to his Albatros D.III on 2 April 1917 and scored 22 victories in it before switching to the Albatros D.V in late June. Following his return from convalescence in October, Richthofen flew the celebrated Fokker Dr.I triplane, the distinctive three-winged aircraft with which he is most commonly associated, although he probably did not use the type exclusively until after it was reissued with strengthened wings in November. Despite the popular link between Richthofen and the Fokker Dr. I, only 19 of his 80 kills were made in this now-famous triplane. It was his Albatros D.III Serial No. 789/16 that was first painted bright red, in late January 1917, and in which he first earned his name and reputation.

Enders was born in West Hartford, Connecticut and was educated at the Noah Webster School at Hartford and St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. He then attended Yale University for a short time before entering the United States Army Air Corps in 1918.
After returning from war he graduated from Yale, where he was a member of Scroll and Key as well as Delta Kappa Epsilon, and went on to become a businessman in real estate in 1922. He tried his hand at several careers before choosing to work in the biological field studying infectious diseases, gaining a Ph.D. at Harvard in 1930.
In 1954, while working at Children's Hospital Boston, Enders, Thomas Huckle Weller, and Frederick Chapman Robbins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discovery of the ability of poliomyelitis viruses to grow in cultures of various types of tissue". This work was the first to show that viruses of this type could be grown and manipulated outside of the body. It was this technique dubbed the Enders-Weller-Robbins method that Jonas Salk used to develop the polio vaccine in 1952. After a large-scale test of the vaccine proved successful in 1954, Salk appeared on a radio show and announced his success to the world. Although he never claimed the credit for himself, he also did not offer up any credit to any of his colleagues, including Enders, Weller, and Robbins, whose technique made his success possible. In 1938, Enders began the study of some of the mammalian viruses, and undertook, in 1941, in collaboration with Cohen, Kane, Levens, Stokes and others, a study of the virus of mumps. This work provided serological tests for the diagnosis of this disease and a skin test for susceptibility to it, and demonstrated the immunizing effect of inactivated mumps virus and the possibility of attenuating the virulence of this virus by passing it through chick embryos. It was shown that mumps often occurs in a form that is not apparent, but nevertheless confers a resistance which is as effective as that conferred by the visible disease.
In 1946, Enders was asked to establish a laboratory for research in infectious diseases at the Children's Medical Center at Boston. In this laboratory much outstanding work on the viral diseases of man has been done under his direction and it was here that the work was done on the cultivation of the poliomyelitis viruses for which Enders was awarded, together with T. H. Weller and F. C. Robbins, the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1954.

WATERFORD, Conn. - Dr. John F. Enders, a Nobel Prize-winning virologist whose discoveries paved the way for vaccines against polio, measles, German measles and mumps as well as to major advances in the fight against cancer and in genetics, has died at age 88.
Scientists credited his discoveries at Harvard University as being among the most important in shaping medicine in the 20th century.
Enders was a basic researcher who was perhaps best known for perfecting the modern techniques of tissue culture. The method, in which cells are grown in test tubes, was first developed by other researchers at Yale University in 1907, according to medical historians.
Enders is credited with developing major advances in techniques that made it possible to grow not only the polio virus, but also many other viruses.
His research with Dr. Fred C. Robbins and Dr. Thomas H. Weller, then his students, is now considered a virological landmark. The three men shared the Nobel Prize in medicine or physiology in 1954.
Enders's discoveries helped open up a new approach to the study of viruses and for the development of vaccines and other preventions of many of the childhood scourges of his time.
A modest, quiet man, Enders was known as "The Chief" to his students and colleagues. Although he was not a physician, Enders trained several generations of leading experts in infectious disease.

Propaganda, the coordinated attempt to influence public opinion through the use of media, was skillfully used by the Nazi Party in the years leading up to and during Adolf Hitler's leadership of Germany (1933–1945). Nazi propaganda provided a crucial instrument for acquiring and maintaining power, and for the implementation of their policies, including the pursuit of total war and the extermination of millions of people in the Holocaust.
Chronology
In opposition (1919-33)
Nazi leader Adolf Hitler devoted two chapters of his 1925/26 work Mein Kampf, itself a propaganda tool, to the study and practice of propaganda. He claimed to have learnt the value of propaganda as a World War I infantryman exposed to very effective British and ineffectual German propaganda. The argument that Germany lost the war largely because of British propaganda efforts, expounded at length in Mein Kampf, reflected then-common German nationalist claims. Although untrue – German propaganda during World War I was mostly more advanced than that of the British – it became the official truth of Nazi Germany thanks to its reception by Hitler.
Mein Kampf contains the blueprint of later Nazi propaganda efforts. Assessing his audience, Hitler writes in chapter IV:
"Propaganda must always address itself to the broad masses of the people. (...) All propaganda must be presented in a popular form and must fix its intellectual level so as not to be above the heads of the least intellectual of those to whom it is directed. (...) The art of propaganda consists precisely in being able to awaken the imagination of the public through an appeal to their feelings, in finding the appropriate psychological form that will arrest the attention and appeal to the hearts of the national masses. The broad masses of the people are not made up of diplomats or professors of public jurisprudence nor simply of persons who are able to form reasoned judgment in given cases, but a vacillating crowd of human children who are constantly wavering between one idea and another. (...) The great majority of a nation is so feminine in its character and outlook that its thought and conduct are ruled by sentiment rather than by sober reasoning. This
sentiment, however, is not complex, but simple and consistent. It is not highly differentiated, but has only the negative and positive notions of love and hatred, right and wrong, truth and falsehood."
As to the methods to be employed, he explains:
"Propaganda must not investigate the truth objectively and, in so far as it is favourable to the other side, present it according to the theoretical rules of justice; yet it must present only that aspect of the truth which is favourable to its own side. (...) The receptive powers of the masses are very restricted, and their understanding is feeble. On the other hand, they quickly forget. Such being the case, all effective propaganda must be confined to a few bare essentials and those must be expressed as far as possible in stereotyped formulas. These slogans should be persistently repeated until the very last individual has come to grasp the idea that has been put forward. (...) Every change that is made in the subject of a propagandist message must always emphasize the same conclusion. The leading slogan must of course be illustrated in many ways and from several angles, but in the end one must always return to the assertion of the same formula."
Hitler put these ideas into practice with the reestablishment of the Völkischer Beobachter, a daily newspaper published by the Nazi Party (NSDAP) from February 1925 on, whose circulation reached 26,175 in 1929. It was joined in 1926 by Joseph Goebbels's Der Angriff, another unabashedly and crudely propagandistic paper.
During most of the Nazis' time in opposition, their means of propaganda remained limited. With little access to mass media, the party continued to rely heavily on Hitler and a few others speaking at public meetings until 1929. In April 1930, Hitler appointed Goebbels head of party propaganda. Goebbels, a former journalist and Nazi party officer in Berlin, soon proved his skills. Among his first successes was the organization of riotous demonstrations that succeeded in having the American anti-war film All Quiet on the Western Front banned in Germany.
In power (1933-39)
Before World War II, Nazi propaganda strategy stressed several themes. Their goals were to create external enemies (countries that allegedly inflicted the Treaty of Versailles on Germany) and internal enemies (Jews). Hitler and Nazi propagandists played on the anti-Semitism and resentment present in Germany. The Jews were blamed for things such as robbing the German people of their hard work while themselves avoiding physical labour.
At war (1939-45)
Until the conclusion of the Battle of Stalingrad on February 4, 1943, German propaganda emphasized the prowess of German arms and the humanity German soldiers had shown to the peoples of occupied territories. Pilots of the Allied bombing fleets were depicted as cowardly murderers, and Americans in particular as gangsters in the style of Al Capone. At the same time, German propaganda sought to alienate Americans and British from each other, and both these Western nations from the Soviets. One of the primary sources for propaganda was the Wehrmachtbericht, a daily radio broadcast that described the military situation on all fronts.
After Stalingrad, the main theme changed to Germany as the sole defender of what they called "Western European culture" against the "Bolshevist hordes". The introduction of the V-1 and V-2 "vengeance weapons" was emphasized to convince Britons of the hopelessness of defeating Germany.

(1) the term “international terrorism” means activities that—

(B) armed conflict, whether or not war has been declared, between two or more nations; or
(C) armed conflict between military forces of any origin; and
(5) the term “domestic terrorism” means activities that—

Robert: Mellorak sickness. It originates in the kidneys and then rapidly attacks the respiratory and the immune system.
Cottle: It's a nasty bit of business. If you don't treat the first symptoms within 48 hours, it'll kill you within three to five days.
Adama: How contagious is it?
Robert: Well, it's not airborne, so we lucked out there. It's spread through human contact. Saliva, sexual intercourse, through the skin. Right now it seems confined to the Sagittarons.
Tigh: That's good; they're welcome to it.
Robert: It's obviously spreading down there. Where we were working.
Adama: It's curable?
Cottle: Absolutely, yes. A shot of bitamucin and you're right as rain in a day or two. And sedatives alleviate the symptoms. But I don't know how long our stock of bitamucin will hold out, so we should probably conserve it and only inoculate after the first symptoms show.
Adama: This is a civilian infection, Dr. Robert, so it's in your hands. But I want Tyrol and the crew immunized before they get sick. I don't need any downtime.
Cottle: If we disinfect everything and stress hygiene, some people won't get sick. And, uh, they won't need the medicine.
Helo: Then shouldn't we get everyone to the showers? Especially the Sagittarons. We should make an announcement.
Robert: -- No, no, we don't want to single them out anymore than we already have to. We'll have a riot on our hands. Now, if it were up to me, I would say just get the Sagittarons settled and then deal with the civvies that have already arrived.
Cottle: Huh. Well, at least you won't have to worry about having enough medicine for the Sagittarons.
Adama: Yeah. Most of them are gonna refuse it. People are gonna die.
Cottle: The last 3,000 years medicine's been just the great curse.
Tigh: That's because they're a bunch of stubborn, root-sucking jackasses holding onto traditions that are a thousand years old.

And he will be finally held responsible for his actions. If you can summon up a little patience, as I have done, we will get through this ordeal.
Zarek: Listen to me, Baltar will get his trial. And this is what you'll get. A hurricane. The media will descend on you and watch and scrutinize and question your every move. You will have sectarian violence. You will have assassination attempts. You will have civil unrest on a scale we've never seen. Work, labor, everyday routine in this Fleet will come to a complete halt. This trial is going to bring the entire Fleet down.
Tory: Mr. Vice President, we have a security plan in order which includes rapid Marine deployment, increased CAP operations, security details...
Zarek: -- A hurricane, Laura. If I were you, I'd declare martial law during the trial. You're gonna need a lot more than a little patience to survive. I'm here if you need me.
