Dick Scobee

For a great long while, perhaps a year, perhaps longer, but maybe not that much longer, I have given a fairly high amount of thought to the area of the Seattle region that centers on the city of Auburn Washington State.

The reason I was thinking of Auburn Washington is because sometimes my mind would start wandering off on an imaginative tangent and I would imagine that when the zombie apocalypse happens then my orders were to proceed to my designated shelter area. No one tells me where that location is but I know because that is why I have been thinking about Auburn Washington and I know to proceed to the Supermall in Auburn just as they are going to a shopping mall for refuge in those zombie movies.

The reason I am supposed to go there, I have thought many times, is because the population of the state becomes zombies and there is a mass migration of those mind-dead zombies and they migrate all across the state into the downtown area of Seattle Washington. So my shelter is basically to just keep out of their way because there is a small exclusion zone established near me where they do not use those roads and streets for their migration. I was thinking about that again recently when there was dialog in the "The Walking Dead" television series about that farm being shielded from the apocalypse. I no longer have cable television now, or even a telephone, so I won't be monitoring that al-Qaida mass communication propaganda resource when those racketeers begin broadcasting again next year.

So anyway, the reason I am making this observation on the world-wide internet is because I was just looking at the map again for Auburn Washington again on the internet and I noticed Dick Scobee's name and I wondered if he was from there which is something I did not know until I just looked it up a few minutes ago and thus am making this observation, which isn't really important considering that I don't really prove anything about when and if the damned zombie apocalypse is even going to happen.

I am also thinking I am chasing myself in time-traveler circles again. Since I am personally affected by what I call the counter-paradox effect then I must have those specific thoughts about Auburn Washington. If I had never had those specific thoughts then I would not be now making this observation in my world-wide internet journal and the people who have my time-traveler documents and that are now comparing this blog post to those time-traveler documents would not have a match and so that would be a time-traveler paradox.

Also, I decided to take this time to point out another observation I have made during the many times I have studied the map of Auburn Washington about how the maps from Microsoft in the internet have that area labeled 'Riverwalk' over there where that casino is located. That area is on the south side of Auburn Washington and just a short ways directly east of the Auburn Supermall shopping center.

I don't think I have ever been in that mall but I have ridden my bicycle next to it over the hundreds of miles I have ridden on that bicycling trail next to and I thought about that with that scene in the 2004 film "Dawn of the Dead" where that police officer is walking along that paved recreation trail and they are standing right next to the "Crossroads Mall." I was comparing that location with the Wayne Golf Course and of its nearby Riverside street which the direction they warned him not to go to and that reminded me of that tunnel on the paved recreation trail near that golf course. The paved trail I rode my bicycle on next to the Auburn Supermall does also go under a highway but it is not a tunnel and is just under an overpass.

Dick Scobee

Francis Richard "Dick" Scobee (May 19, 1939 - January 28, 1986) was an American astronaut.

Born in Cle Elum, Washington to Francis William Scobee and Edlynn (Miller) Scobee, Scobee attended Auburn Senior High School, Cascade Middle School, and Washington Elementary in Auburn, Washington. He graduated in 1957.

Service

He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1957, where he served as a reciprocating engine mechanic at Kelly Air Force Base in Texas. While off duty, he attended San Antonio College, and eventually received a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Arizona in 1965; the same year, he was awarded an officer's commission. Afterward, he attended flight school and earned his wings in 1966, serving as a combat aviator in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and other decorations.

After his tour of duty, Scobee attended the Aerospace Research Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, 100 miles north of Los Angeles, California. Upon graduation in 1972, he became an Air Force test pilot, logging thousands of hours of flight time in dozens of aircraft, including the Boeing 747, the experimental X-24B lifting body, the F-111 Aardvark, and the gigantic C-5 Galaxy.

Selected for NASA's astronaut program in January 1978, Scobee completed his training in August 1979. While awaiting his first orbital spaceflight mission, he served as an instructor pilot for the shuttle's 747 carrier aircraft. In April 1984, Scobee piloted Challenger mission STS-41-C, which successfully deployed one satellite and repaired another.

Challenger

Scobee was assigned commander for the ill-fated STS-51-L mission. The mission, designed to deploy a satellite to study the approaching Halley's Comet and to inaugurate the Teacher in Space Project, was delayed numerous times due to bad weather and technical glitches. When the mission finally did lift off the pad, an O-ring seal failure destroyed the shuttle 73 seconds into the flight, killing Scobee and the other six members of the crew; the tragedy, viewed live on national television, prompted several days of national mourning, as well as a major shakeup at NASA. Scobee died a Lieutenant colonel. At T+68 into the mission, the CAPCOM Richard Covey informed the crew that they were "go at throttle up", and Commander Scobee confirmed the call - his last recorded words were his response, "Roger, go at throttle up." The shuttle broke up 73 seconds into the flight, and at an altitude of 48,000 feet (14.6 km).

Some experts, including one of NASA's lead investigators, Robert Overmyer, who was closest to Scobee, believed most if not all of the crew were alive and possibly conscious during the entire descent until impact with the ocean. After the investigation, Overmyer stated, "I not only flew with Dick Scobee, we owned a plane together, and I know Scob did everything he could to save his crew. Scob fought for any and every edge to survive. He flew that ship without wings all the way down."
