Statement on the Resignation of Joycelyn Elders as Surgeon General

December 9, 1994

Dr. Joycelyn Elders is a physician of outstanding ability, energy, and commitment. As a pediatrician, she dedicated her life to improving the health of children. As Surgeon General, she worked tirelessly to reduce teen pregnancy and AIDS and to improve the health of all Americans, especially our children.

Dr. Elders' public statements reflecting differences with administration policy and my own convictions have made it necessary for her to tender her resignation.

Those statements in no way diminish her devotion to her work and the enormous positive impact she has had on the problems she tackled and the people she served.

I will always be grateful for her service.

Clinton Fires Surgeon General Over New Flap

December 10, 1994 PAUL RICHTER and MARLENE CIMONS TIMES STAFF WRITERS

WASHINGTON — President Clinton fired outspoken Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders on Friday for telling an AIDS forum that she believes masturbation "perhaps should be taught" to schoolchildren.

Ousting the most controversial official of his Administration, Clinton said Elders' comments reflect "differences with Administration policy and my own convictions, and have made it necessary for her to tender her resignation."

Clinton delivered word of his decision in an afternoon phone call to the 61-year-old physician, who has come under fire from conservatives for her outspoken views on sex education, distribution of condoms and legalization of drugs.

Clinton had disagreed with a series of earlier Elders statements, according to White House Chief of Staff Leon E. Panetta. "There is a record of those statements, as all of you know," Panetta said. "But some of them involved Catholics having a love affair with fetuses, comments about legalizing drugs, comments regarding teaching 5-year-olds the use of condoms."

But the latest comment, Panetta said, "is just one too many." Clinton believes notions that schools should teach masturbation "are wrong, and feels that's not what schools are for," Panetta said. "And it is not what a surgeon general should say."

In an interview with CBS News late Friday, Elders said she was not ashamed of what she did as surgeon general. "I think we all may wish we said things differently, but I have no regrets. Words are strange things. Once they are out, you can't get them back."

Elders said she was asked to resign as a result of several controversial statements she made since taking office, not just the most recent remark on masturbation. "Nothing is ever the result of just one thing," she said.

Elders, who was Clinton's health secretary for five years in Arkansas before joining the Administration, made her comments before an audience of several hundred people gathered in New York last week for World AIDS Day.

Amid a discussion of AIDS prevention, she was asked by an audience member about the prospects that masturbation could be more openly discussed and promoted as a means of keeping young people from riskier sexual activity.

"I think that it is something that's part of human sexuality and it's part of something that perhaps should be taught," she said. "But we've not even taught our children the very basics. And I feel that we have tried ignorance for a very long time and it's time we try education."

*

Elders' departure eliminates a figure who had become an increasing source of vulnerability for the Administration at a time when it could ill afford more attacks from the right. Although rumors of her ouster were circulating within the White House before disclosure of the latest incident, officials denied that the firing was a sign of Clinton's move toward the political right.

The firing brought swift reaction from conservatives, who called it overdue and hailed it as a sign of the after-effects of conservative victories in last month's midterm elections. But some liberal groups, including gays and family planning organizations, defended Elders as a public-spirited official who told the truth.

Officials said Elders did not try to talk Clinton out of the decision. In a statement, Elders said: "I feel this halfway point is a good time for me to go. While some Administration officials and I have some honest differences over the issues, President Clinton and I maintain our strong mutual respect for each other."

White House officials said the decision to fire Elders was prompted by word on Thursday that U.S. News & World Report was about to publish an account of the comments in next week's editions.

Panetta said that he, Clinton and Donna Shalala, secretary of health and human services, already had warned Elders about statements that diverged from Administration views.

Elders, a pediatric endocrinologist, said from the beginning of her term that she intended to use her position to promote widespread school-based sex education and services for teen-agers, including the availability of contraceptives. She also said she would advocate freedom of choice in abortion and the medicinal use of marijuana.

After her confirmation, she enraged critics by suggesting that the nation study legalizing drugs as a way of reducing crime.

To the Administration's embarrassment, her son, Kevin, was arrested in July, 1993, for selling one-eighth of an ounce of cocaine. He was later sentenced to 10 years in prison.

In one interview, Elders annoyed the Girl Scouts by saying that "girls who are lesbians should be allowed to join the Girl Scouts." The organization responded by saying it had no official policy on sexual orientation and had been unfairly attacked.

Clinton Fires Surgeon General Over New Flap

December 10, 1994 PAUL RICHTER and MARLENE CIMONS TIMES STAFF WRITERS

Last June, 87 GOP congressmen asked Clinton to fire her for remarks she made encouraging gays and lesbians to save children from "the un-Christian religious right." The White House responded with a letter of support that contained a disclaimer insisting that Elders' opinions "do not necessarily reflect those of the President and his Administration as a whole."

Later last summer, Panetta told reporters that he had lectured Elders for saying that Catholic priests and others who oppose abortion have "a love affair with the fetus."

Elders' departure marks a further diminution of the large group of Arkansans who joined Clinton in Washington in the heady early days of his Administration.

She served as chief of the Arkansas health department under then-Gov. Clinton, who appointed her in 1987, and served in that position until he nominated her for the surgeon general's post. She joked at the time that "he said when I was appointed director of health in Arkansas that he didn't know what he was getting. After five years, he knows what he is getting."

Although Clinton sometimes pointed out his differences with Elders, he also seemed proud that his Administration could tolerate an official of such controversial views.

After she urged consideration of drug legalization in 1993, Clinton defended Elders' right to be "outspoken and energetic in a way that I don't necessarily agree with."

But Elders' comments were so controversial that even members of Clinton's own Administration did not hesitate to take shots at them.

*

In an interview Friday on the Court TV cable network, Thomas Constantine, administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration, called Elders' support for drug legalization "totally inappropriate."

"If somebody at that level of a surgeon general (is) talking about legalization as an appropriate remedy, we've lost our will to do something about it. . . . I think it's a crazy idea."

William J. Bennett, a conservative scholar and former education secretary, said Elders' firing was "appropriate today and it was appropriate a year ago. She's really in a class by herself in terms of bizarre comments, out of the mainstream attitudes and embarrassment to the Administration."

But Bennett said Clinton's action Friday was a cynical political decision made as he lurches to the right in response to last month's election results.

"I would call this the first personnel decision of the new Republican majority," Bennett said. "They're just reading the winds and pretending they're 'shocked' by this most recent statement and not the long history of statements."

But other conservatives lamented the loss of a valuable target.

Times staff writers John M. Broder and Ronald J. Ostrow contributed to this story.

After negotiating a price for her services, she told her "date" to drive to a parking lot behind a clinic on East 400 Fifth Street. While en route to the location, the "date" told her that he was a helicopter pilot with the National Guard. Smith said that she asked the man if he was the "psycho killer," and he had responded that he was not. He told her that he had five kids and would not do something like that. After arriving in the parking lot, the man paid her $40 for oral sex. They went to the rear of the van and got onto the raised mattress, where the man pulled down his pants and she performed oral sex on him for approximately 5 to 7 minutes. During the entire time, she said, his penis did not become erect. At one point after the 5 to 7 minute period, the man hit her over the head with something, but she wasn't sure what he hit her with.

WASHINGTON - With his presidency at risk, President Clinton reversed course Monday and acknowledged engaging in sex with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky, then apologized publicly for a relationship that he denied under oath earlier this year.

"I did have a relationship with Miss Lewinsky that was not appropriate. In fact, it was wrong," the president said in a televised address after more than four hours of grand jury testimony.

On the space shuttle, can the landing gear cover open without extending the landing gear? I'm thinking that the left side door opened but the right door would not open. I jumped up and down on it until it opened and then I fell through to the outside. I am wondering if I had a tether on and was being bounced up and down against the elevon. I think about that scene from Ramnbo 2 where something similar happens to him. I guess I cut the tether with a knife. I wonder if I had a closing blade or a straight blade. Either way, I would be lucky to not have dropped the knife as I was being bashed against the side at 1200 mph.

Was it June 1994 when I remember moving to Charlotte? Seems as though we lost the contract with First Savings Bank in April 1994 and then we got another one with another bank in Charlotte a short time later. Maybe this has some reflection about the Clinton adminstration taking over and some uncertainty whether my command would remain active, what ever it was we were doing.

That same day I was at Microsoft asking for my job back, Clinton was near my office at this Costco. I could see that Costco from where I used to sit. I figure Clinton did this because he knew that Microsoft burned me but he didn't know at the time just how bad it was. In essence, they loaned me to Microsoft but they didn't realize Microsoft is effectively a branch of Al Qaeda.

TURIN, Italy - Laura Bush said Saturday that Hillary Rodham Clinton’s criticism of her husband’s administration was “out of bounds,” arguing that the former first lady should show some empathy for the current White House occupants.

“Of course I think it’s out of bounds,” the first lady said. “But I think it’s politics, it’s certainly politics.”

Mrs. Bush pointed out that former Presidents Bush and Clinton and her husband are part of a unique club that also includes the wives.

I have been having some thoughts lately that the Roberts was actually hit by a torpedo in April 1988. Then I started to wonder why they didn’t fire more to finish it off. But then I thought that maybe they expected the mines to finish it off. They timed the attack with the Roberts entering the minefield. I also think I was on the Roberts at the time and that would explain a lot. I wrote about a “memory” I have of being in Gitmo back in 1985 while the Taylor was down there for shakedown. I wrote about a large metal buoy that was floating near that island where the Navy used to store anchor chain. I have these vague thoughts of being thrown around in a Boston whaler I was in by myself one night while the rest of the guys were on the nearby island, where we were having a party. I was thrown around in the boat because I hit that big metal buoy. Then I have some “memories of towing it in to the island. I think the boat represents that I was on the Roberts at the time of the explosion. The memory of my towing the buoy may represent those thoughts I have described of towing the unexploded mines away from the Roberts so they wouldn’t drift into it and sink it. But I am confused as to whether I towed them away while swimming, with a rope tied to me and the mine, which would actually explain other thoughts, or whether I used the Roberts motor whaleboat to tow away the mines. Those whaleboats are mostly fiberglass as I recall, but the machinery is all metallic of course, and I think there are miscellaneous metallic pieces on it. Maybe I did both as the reports I read indicate there were three mines floating nearby after the explosion. I am thinking I towed them off to a safe distance where they could be detonated with a rifle from a hovering helicopter. I also need to think more about that day we were out boating in the bay at Gitmo. I have been “remembering” a lot of details from that time, but I am not sure what it means. We had a small flotilla of whalers and one large pontoon boat crossing the bay heading towards that island. I remember I had the beer in my boat. One of the other boats wanted some beers so I was throwing beers into their boat as we sped across the bay. At one point, I threw a beer and it was impaled on the other boats anchor. At another point, we couldn’t get the pontoon boat started again after we made landfall on the coast of the other side of the bank and had to fire a flare to notify the marina to send out a power boat to tow it back across the bay. I also remember some very specific, but confusing thoughts a long time ago that I was on the Roberts when it hit the mine and then I was on the Wainwright for Operation Praying Mantis. It made no sense and seemed just random thoughts. But I am wondering if it is true. I am thinking though that the Wainwright actually represents the USS Chandler and I was in charge of a SEAL platoon embarked on the Chandler. In my “memory,” the SEALs didn’t have to go aboard the GOSP but I am wondering if that is true.

Roberts after it was hit by an explosion reportedly from an anti-ship mine but that was probably a torpedo that was spring an ambush in a minefiled or does it grate on you most because that was my fifth Medal of Honor and you are envious?

Nannie Helen Burroughs, was an African-American educator, orator, religious leader, and business woman.

Her parents were John and Jennie Burroughs. They were both ex-slaves. Her father was a farmer and Baptist preacher, her mother was a cook.

Nannie moved to Washington, D.C., as a young woman to take advantage of the city's superior educational opportunities. While living in Washington she decided to open a school for African American girls to prepare them for a productive adult life. She was an active member of her church, where she organized a women's club that conducted evening classes in useful skills such as typewriting, bookkeeping, cooking, and sewing. Her responsibilities within the church increased when she became secretary of the Women's Auxiliary of the National Baptist Convention, which supported missionary work and educational societies in Baptist churches throughout the nation.

Burroughs's lifelong dream was realized when she opened the National Training School for Women and Girls in Washington, D.C., in 1909.

In 1975, Mayor Walter E. Washington proclaimed May 10 to be Nannie Helen Burroughs Day in the District of Columbia.

I have thought several times about a dream I had before waking up earlier today in the morning. I think about it again now, especially considering how my dreams are relevant to observations I made later in the day after having the dream, after watching on television the scene I reference now. The scene only lasted for probably a second or two of dreaming but I have thought of it several times today because of the good feeling I had during the dream. I cannot recall how it started out but the part I remember is that I seemed to be entering an office building and I got a pass to clip to my uniform shirt and I had full access to the building. What I did though is sit in a chair in the lobby, which I can only partially visualize and I could have gone on in but I was just sitting there watching people enter and leave and I think that is what I wanted to do. I looked at my watch. I cannot recall the precise time I saw in the dream but my watch might have read 12:38 PM. I sat there for a while and if I would have wrote about this dream back in early 2006 I would have wrote about how the narrator was talking to me in the dream but in the dream, no one spoke to me during that series of scenes. There almost seemed to be comments about why I was sitting there when I could go in to the office area and I had full access to that building. I was wearing a United States military uniform in the dream and after waking up I decided I was wearing a dress white United States Marine Corps officers uniform that is no longer in service. The uniform was very similar to the United States Navy officers ceremonial dress uniform but what I read earlier today is that uniform was phased in 1998, or maybe 2000. So anyway I was clearly wearing a United States military uniform and I got up from the chair in the lobby and I started walking through the office section and I was very glad to be there. I have been left with the sense all day about how I was back home. I have also been thinking that was some kind of office that I worked out of and that is here in the United States and I had been gone for a while and I was glad to be back and I was walking around and no one had realized yet that I was back. That was how the dream ended. I was walking around through the office and I noted that someone I knew didn't work in the same place. I was going somewhere specific but that was where the dream ended and I woke up and I think that was when I got up out of bed.

But anyway, as I read back through the scene I remember that before that scene was something about me being trapped in someplace that seemed to be a deep well. I was aware that I was perched on a surface and there was very dark water just below me in reach and I was worried about what was under that surface. But I was definitely trapped in a well, a long vertical cylinder of a wall made of stones and there seemed to be just enough lighting to see my surroundings. At one point I caught a frog. I was keeping it because I might have had to use it for food. But I didn't have to because I was only trapped down there for eight days without food and water and I didn't want to eat the frog, which was the only source of possible food that presented itself to me during that time I was trapped in the well. So then the part in the office building seemed to happen.

The American Presidency Project

Ronald Reagan

XL President of the United States: 1981 - 1989

Remarks at a Tribute to Andrew W. Mellon at the National Gallery of Art

January 27, 1983

Trustees of the National Gallery, Mr. Chief Justice, members of the Cabinet, Members of Congress, distinguished guests:

I will not speak as long as I did in the State of the Union address. [Laughter]

Nancy and I are pleased to be here to honor Andrew Mellon and to celebrate another milestone in the realization of his vision of a national gallery of art—an American gallery, created for the enrichment of all the people of the United States and second to none in its commitment to excellence.

Tonight we inaugurate some 40,000 square feet of new gallery space. It's a great privilege for me to share in this. President Roosevelt accepted the original gifts of the west wing—or the West Building, and Mr. Mellon's collection in 1941. And President Carter accepted the East Building in 1978. It's taken 42 years, but now a Republican has a chance to share in the fun. [Laughter]

The man we honor tonight, Andrew Mellon, contributed so much—as a captain of finance and industry, as a highly principled public servant, and—which is the reason we remember him this evening—as an individual whose dedication to the arts still enriches the people of the United States. In business, he contributed to the great industrial expansion that provided the American people with the bounty of freedom and wealth the world had never known. His personal commitment to the arts added a further dimension of meaning and beauty to the liberty in which he believed so deeply.

Mr. Mellon's philanthropy was not—as some would have us believe—a rare exception. It was and is a vital part of the American character. From our earliest days, the arts in America have depended on this generosity and, yes, on the appreciation of the cultural underpinnings of our society. Our country has been blessed with great patrons like Andrew Mellon, but also with millions of less wealthy Americans who give what they can in order to elevate the cultural level of their community and of their country.

We can all be proud that in 1981, the most recent figures available, Americans contributed a record-breaking $3.35 billion to cultural institutions and organizations. It represents an increase of 13.2 percent from the year before.

Americans, more than any other people, have always understood the relationship between personal freedom and individual responsibility, something which is especially true in the arts. However, we have enjoyed our cultural freedom for so long that sometimes some of us may take it for granted.

A group of young Americans were touring Latvia a few years ago. They were given an opportunity to visit with a local artist. And this painter, careful with her words because she was speaking through a government interpreter, suggested that the artist fared better under communism because the system demanded quality before an artist's work could be shown, thus preventing an undeveloped artist from ruining his or her reputation. This painter, for example, said she had worked hard and was soon to be permitted a showing in Moscow. And she pulled out some examples of her work. And, as is so often the case with Socialist realism, her work lacked a certain personality and feeling.

Before the young Americans could leave, however, this artist insisted that they see some of the examples of her earlier work, before her skills had matured enough for a showing in Moscow. And she removed from her closet some photographs of her earlier paintings, paintings that were alive with expression, reflecting warmth and vitality. She had given those young Americans a message without ever saying a negative word about artistic freedom under totalitarianism.

The National Gallery, as was Mr. Mellon's wish, has gone to great lengths to prevent political interference with its decisions. We can all be grateful that God provided this country with leaders who loved culture and also loved liberty, as exemplified by Andrew Mellon. And tonight I would like to take an opportunity to thank his son, Paul Mellon, for all he's doing for the arts and for what he has done for the National Gallery.

I understand that at today's meeting the trustees accepted the extraordinary gift of paintings, sculpture, and graphic art that we've seen, from Paul Mellon. Well, I, too, am proud to accept this girl on behalf of the people of the United States.

Paul, it would be inappropriate to say that you're following in your father's footsteps, because you're leaving some mighty big footprints of your own. Of course, one would expect nothing less from an old horse cavalryman like yourself. And you can take that from an old horse cavalryman himself. [Laughter]

Seriously, though, the work that you're doing, like the generous contributions of so many here tonight, is something for which all of you can be rightfully proud.

Andrew Mellon's original gifts, his collection and the funds for the gallery, were made on the condition that the gallery would not bear his name, but the name of the Nation instead. He knew well that a country is as refined and decent as its people. Our cultural future, as it should be, is not in the hands of a minister or commissar of arts but, instead, is dependent on farsighted men and women who are dedicated to the cultural betterment of America-people who yearn to share their love of art with their fellow citizens and take it upon themselves to do what is necessary for cultural and artistic advancement.

Early in our Republic, our country was often referred to as a new Athens. Many basic ideals of democracy can be traced back to that ancient city-state, a city with elections and an open marketplace called an agora; a city, a gathering center for mankind where intellectual and artistic creativity reached new heights—left artistic treasures that speak to us through the ages. Today we should all be grateful to citizens like Andrew Mellon who left, as did the Founding Fathers, a legacy like that of Athens which will speak to mankind for a thousand years.

I don't know that it was Athens, but I do know that there was a Greek city-state back in that time that had a custom that has intrigued me very much. When a citizen had a proposal to make for a government program, he made it standing on a chair with a noose around his neck. [Laughter] And if the people liked his proposal, they removed the noose; if they didn't, they kicked the chair. [Laughter] I don't suppose we could institute that. [Laughter] We'll stick with the arts and the other democratic ideals.

But I thank you for letting me be a part, and Nancy be a part, of your efforts in behalf of the National Gallery of Art. Thank you all, and God bless you.

Note: The President spoke at 10:32 p.m. in the West Building of the National Gallery of Art.

Hillary Clinton Book Advance, $8 Million, Is Near Record

By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK

Published: December 16, 2000

Senator-elect Hillary Rodham Clinton agreed last night to sell Simon & Schuster a memoir of her years as first lady, for the near-record advance of about $8 million.

The deal ends a frantic weeklong bidding war that provoked widespread curiosity about just what she planned to write. Mrs. Clinton had told publishers she planned to discuss her feelings about the scandals of her husband's administration as well as her thoughts about women's changing roles in the world.

SPOCK: Fascinating.

MCCOY: So improbable we almost didn't check it.

KIRK: What?

SPOCK: Sodium chloride. Not a trace of it.

MCCOY: This man has no salt in his body at all.

KIRK: Can you explain that, Doctor?

MCCOY: I can't, except that what we normally carry in our bodies is gone from his.

SPOCK: He would die almost instantly.

KIRK: How? There isn't a mark on his body.

MCCOY: Except the red rings on his face.

KIRK: You called that skin mottling.

MCCOY: I thought it was, sir. Another error on my part.

KIRK: I'm not counting them, Bones. Are you in the mood for an apology?

MCCOY: Oh, forget it. I probably was mooning over her. I should have been thinking about my job.

KIRK: Perhaps you were. Both Nancy and Crater went out of their way to mention one item they needed.

MCCOY: Salt tablets.

KIRK: Mister Spock, outfit a landing party. We're beaming down with some questions.

MARCH 29, 1993: TELEPORTATION BEAMS FROM SCI-FI TO REAL SCIENCE

1993: SCIENTISTS SHOW teleportation is possible, at least theoretically. The downsides: The original teleported object must be destroyed, and it can’t happen instantaneously.

In a paper published in the scientific journal Physical Review Letters, researchers showed information about a quantum state can be transported via teleportation, which they define as “a term from science fiction meaning to make a person or object disappear while an exact replica appears somewhere else.” The sender, whom they dub Alice, doesn’t even need to know anything about the quantum state to teleport its information to Bob, the receiver.

Say Alice has a quantum system, and she wants to send its 411 to Bob so he can make an exact replica. But she doesn’t know much about her quantum system, so she has a conundrum on her quantum system-bearing hands. If she tries to measure its properties, like its location or momentum, she’ll invariably disrupt it. And if she disrupts it, she can’t send Bob information accurate enough for him to make a carbon copy. So, how does she get out of the catch-22?

That’s where entanglement — when two or more intertwined particles share physical properties across space and maybe time — comes to the rescue. Measuring the properties of one entangled particle will change its twin’s characteristics. Einstein referred to entanglement as “spooky action at a distance.”

Alice can make her quantum system interact with an entangled system — let’s call it Carrie — whose properties she does know. She has one Carrie particle, and Bob has its twin. When her Carrie particle interacts with her unknown quantum system, information about her mystery system is transferred over to Carrie. Because her Carrie twin is entangled with Bob’s, he now has access to that information and he can use it to reconstruct Alice’s unknown particle. Alice’s original is, of course, destroyed in the process.

And that’s likely a good thing. According to IBM’s quantum teleportation website: “A few science fiction writers consider teleporters that preserve the original, and the plot gets complicated when the original and teleported versions of the same person meet; but the more common kind of teleporter destroys the original, functioning as a super transportation device, not as a perfect replicator of souls and bodies.”

Since the original teleportation paper was published on this day in 1993, other teams have shown teleportation, also popularly known as “beaming up,” is more than just theoretically possible. In 1998, Caltech scientists teleported a photon about three feet. Another group was able to teleport quantum information over a distance of more than 10 miles.

But don’t get too excited. Transporting a quantum state, which can refer to a particle’s spin, momentum, or other variables, is much easier than teleporting a whole person. So, Scotty won’t be beaming you up anytime soon. The silver lining? That means the White House’s claims that the CIA didn’t teleport a young Obama to Mars are probably right on.

In flight refueling

That was about the stress of flying aircraft at night. I can still visualize from the dream that the headlights cast light only about two feet, I would guess, ahead of the car on the road and that has got to be memory of my aircraft's anti-collision lights and probably before I shut them off while flying through a cloud.

Last night before falling asleep again I wondered if that dream was memory of me flying right seat in an US Navy EA-6 Prowler and that could be true because I remember there were more than two people in the car but then I decided that was not all of the reason for that dream. The reason I saw the gas station on my right side and then the two women with the coffee pot is because I was sitting in the front seat of a US Navy F-14 Tomcat and the Tomcat's refueling probe is mounted on the right side of the fuselage and then it extends out of the fuselage and out away from the fuselage in order for the pilot to connect to the refueling drogue. That must be the reason for the coffee pot. The coffee pot was the drogue from the refueling aircraft. The two women must have been the crew of the aircraft and the reason they seemed vaguely familiar is because that detail in the dream consisted of an actual memory of me visualising the crew of the refueling aircraft that I was talking to over the radio. I never did visualize those other people in the car with me in the dream and I feel confident they were the crew of other aircraft and probably my crew in the backseat of my aircraft.

I am not certain why I saw my arm extend out of the right side window and pour out the cold coffee because I wondered if that was actually me looking out the right side of my aircraft and looking at one of the wings. That is consistent the detail that I saw my arm extended out the window. More likely though is that I was again seeing the refueling probe of my US Navy F-14 Tomcat as I was refueling.

Seeing the water on either side of the road is probably about me lining up my aircraft to land at night on a US Navy aircraft carrier which can stressful at any time.

I was thinking about a dream I had just before waking up this morning and I decided to go for it and see if that dream was relevant to associations with today's date. The associations are compelling and the details I describe about the dream this morning are details really from a dream when I was asleep this morning. I had not checked on any of the associating details until I had been up and after I thought about it while taking a shower. I didn't make the association in my mind with the symbols I saw in the dream to my United States Navy Cross medal until after I got out of the shower and sat down at my desk to think more about it.

The dream I awoke from had me in some kind of residential building. I was sitting in a hallway outside a door of an apartment or condo and I was waiting for other people to join me. We were there to visit my grandmother. Earlier, I had seen myself as a passenger in a car and I had a guitar and I forget the precise dialog I had with the woman who was driving, while other passengers sat in the backseat, but I was trying to match the radio signal on the radio inside my guitar with the radio broadcast from the radio in the dashboard of the car we were riding in. So the sequence of the dream seemed to go from that car, where I recall details about the traffic on the highway, to me sitting in that hallway in that building. At some point, when I was in that hallway, I noticed something unusual about the bottom of my hallux toe on one of my feet. There was indentations on it and I was studying that detail. I noted that the indications formed a perfect 'plus sign.' My first thought was that it was something to do with ions, the negatively charged atoms or molecules. As I was sitting there in that hallway, I said something about those symbols on my toe and I saw "Oscar Goldman" in the only appearance in the dream, ask me "What does that mean?" or "What does that matter?" I forget his precise question. I thought also that looking at the plus signs from an angle, and there was more than one, then it resembled the lowercase letter 'x.' I looked in my shoe to see if something in there had caused it but there was nothing. That seemed to be the point where the people I had been traveling with earlier then arrived in the hallway, and I think they came up via elevator or stairwell, which is a detail I cannot recall, and we were going to then go into my grandmother's home to visit with her. So when I saw the other people arriving, I got up and went the other direction in the hallway and to a door that was close by and that was open and I saw my first knocking on the door and I heard myself calling out words similar to, "Grandma, are you home?" Then I saw a woman come around the corner in her apartment and to the door and I knew right away I was knocking on the wrong door because she wasn't my grandmother and in the dream she was a woman I had never seen before. I saw myself raise my hand and I apologized that I was at the wrong apartment and then I went back down the hallway to the door where I saw everyone else go into and I guess now that was the correct apartment. The dream seemed to end there and I don't recall any other details after that. I think that was the point where I woke up and got out of bed and damnit my back hurts so bad today I can hardly walk and I didn't think I was going to be able to get out of the shower. God, I hate this place.

In an earlier dream I saw myself go into a store and I was carrying a double-barreled shotgun, which is unusual because I never have owned or wanted that kind of shotgun, and I saw myself ask the woman for box of 12-gauge shotgun shells that I intended to purchase. I thought about that in the shower too because I couldn't remember an earlier dream where I had seemed to go into that store before that and to purchase "sedatives." I thought maybe that was just a dream influenced by how bad my back was hurting and I had gone in there to purchase pain reliever and then the woman was commenting about how I was back into for shotgun shells after being in there earlier for "sedatives." I don't know why I had the shotgun. I rarely dream about firearms. I cannot recall the last time I saw a firearm in my dream. The last time I saw myself in a dream going into a store, that I can recall now, was several days ago when I went into buy a broom and a mop.

I completely forgot about the cab and "Sonny." Only after generating much of the information did I go read that dialog and then remember that. I haven't seen that film in a very long time. So why would I dream such specific details today?
