"Nautical striping"

(May 17, 2007) - Former USS Stark (FFG 31) crewmember Tim Martineau reads the names of the fallen Sailors during the tolling of the bell at the USS Stark 20-year anniversary memorial ceremony. May 17, 1987, Stark was on routine patrol in the Persian Gulf when two Iraqi missiles struck the ship killing 37 Sailors. Despite the severe damage inflicted, the heroic efforts of the Stark's crew saved the ship. Stark was later decommissioned in 1999. 070517-N-3038W-040 ARABIAN SEA (May 17, 2007) - During pre-fire inspection of the Close-In Weapons System (CIWS), Fire Controlman 3rd Class Erin Devries enters computer codes on the local control panel aboard Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). The CIWS is one of Stennis' self defense systems used to combat close-in air or surface threats. John C. Mike Mullen salutes as he is piped through the sideboys during the arrival of the official party for the change of command ceremony on board USS Enterprise (CVN 65) for Commander, Fleet Forces Command (CFFC). Adm. Gary Roughead assumed command from Adm. John B. Nathman during the ceremony.
