When the Shah of Iran, a strongly pro-U.S. ally, was ousted from power after the Islamic Revolution in 1979, the stridently anti-U.S. regime of Ayatollah Khomeini that captured power also inherited a military bonanza: billions of dollars worth of state-of-the-art weapons provided by the United States.

The U.S. equipment in the Iranian military arsenal at that time included some of the most advanced jet fighters and reconnaissance aircraft of that generation: McDonnell Douglas F-4D and F-4E Phantoms, Grumman F-14A Tomcats, Lockheed P-3F Orions, along with Sidewinder and Harpoon missiles

MRS. BUSH: Thank you very much, Governor. Thank you, Governor, and thanks for the great job you're doing for California. We all -- everyone in the United States loves looking out here and watching you and watching what a great job you're doing. Thanks a lot. (Applause.)

Well, I'm just going to make this a very short introduction, but I'm going to be campaigning for my husband until November 2nd, and I decided I really had my work cut out for me. When we were in Hawaii last fall, and we were welcomed to a school that we were visiting by a little 2nd-grader who bellowed out, George Washington! (Laughter.) He was close, just the wrong George W. (Laughter.)

I've had a really wonderful time watching my husband over the last four years. I've seen him as he's met people around the United States. I've watched as he's helped a family build their own home, their first home, a Habitat home. I've watched him with the men and women of our United States military at bases all over the world. (Applause.) And I've watched, and I know how he treats every person he meets with dignity and respect. I'm so proud of him, and I know how challenging these times are and how well he's met the challenges that we've faced in these last few years in our country.

And I also know that these times require a particularly strong and determined leader. And I'm glad that my husband is that kind of leader.

Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States. (Applause.)

THE PRESIDENT: Thanks for coming. And thanks for having us. Thank you all, please be seated. Thanks for the warm -- warm welcome.

John Jefferson comes home from a trip overseas a strangely changed man. His already nervous wreck of a mother is distraught by the way he seems to be feigning feelings for her and his father that he no longer has. Plus, his odd refusal to accompany the family to church on Sunday not only disturbs her but their priest as well. He also seems to be making fun of and smirking at his father's jubilant expressions of patriotism. His poor mother cannot imagine what could have caused such a change in her favorite son, who used to be loving and church-going and now seems remote from both. He also gets strange calls and goes off to strange "meetings" with no explanation. He is also being watched by an FBI agent who comes to the home and greatly disturbs John's mother with his odd questions about him. Eventually the horrible truth comes out: John is a Communist spy! No wonder he has no real feelings for his family and shuns the church he once loved!

WE ARE very happy this evening to be hosts to His Majesty the Shahinshah of Iran--a wonderful country historically, and a wonderful country in the modern sense. That country was our ally in the late world war. Had not Iran opened its gates and given us the opportunity to assist the Russians at the proper time, there is not a doubt in the world but what the whole burden of World War II would have eventually been on the United States of America.

We are very grateful for that assistance which your great country furnished us at that time.

We have always been friendly to this cradle of history, this country about which Daniel said, "The laws of the Medes and Persians they are not altered." By that Daniel meant not that the laws were unalterable, but that the Medes and the Persians believed in keeping their contracts.

We have been dealing with a great power that does not believe in keeping its contracts. Iran believes in keeping its contracts. The United States of America believes in keeping its contracts. When we make a treaty it is not a scrap of paper. It is intended to do just what it purports to do. It is an agreement which we expect to carry out. And that is the tradition and the theory of your great country.

I have just been having a conversation with His Majesty, in which he has been discussing a fair deal for Iran. It sounds like my St. Paul speech!

I want to say to you, Your Majesty, that the Government of the United States is represented here at this state dinner tonight. We have every cross-section of it. We have the Cabinet, and the Foreign Relations Committees of the legislative bodies of the Government. You are now looking at the people who make the clock tick in the United States.

I hope you will have a pleasant and an enjoyable visit in this country. We all want to contribute to your pleasure and to furnish you with every information you may desire. You are at liberty to talk with anybody you please. You are at liberty to see anything you want to see. You will not be hampered by a police guard, unless you want it. And you will have to ask for it, if you do want it. We will try and make it most pleasant for you in all our great cities, and I hope you will have the opportunity to see whatever you want to see in the United States of America.
