"the strange lodge which moves through the sky."

Ah I get it. My so-called counter-paradox effect doesn't depend on the time-traveler journal that *I* transfer.

Suppose I argue I don't want grandchildren.

And I already had the content of this blog post created before watching the scenes where I make this relevant observation.

Shouldn't come as much surprise of how I had already imagined the content of those earlier scenes and that I haven't described here before. I found myself wondering if I had written about that extensive line of thought that my mind crunched on for weeks and months and that I still sometimes think about although not very often anymore. I can't recall if I posted anything about here. I don't think so.

And I mean, come on. You should see what I see standing at the checkout line in the grocery store.

I’m pretty much set on Spokane Valley now. For a long time I have wanted to live somewhere that has real winters and that seems to be a good place.

You know, I only started thinking about it seriously a few days ago, something a medical doctor during my treatment at the VA told me. He told me specifically that I have a service-connected disability. That statement has been lingering around in my mind for a few days. I had thought of it before but I didn’t give it much thought. That was April 2006 when he told me that. The next month is when I really went crazy and started to believe my memory was wrong. Well, that’s still crazy but it seems more credible now, 7 years later.

Did "THE BLOB" cause our warm summer?

This has been an unusually warm summer here in the Pacific Northwest. But why?

Several people have suggested the cause is a pool of unusually warm water over the northeast Pacific, one my colleague Nick Bond has amusingly termed "the blob." How did this blob develop and what are the implications?

As noted above, the blob is a region of unusually warm water off the Northwest coast. Here is the difference from normal sea surface temperature (the SST anomaly) for this summer (courtesy of NOAA). Can you see the orange area off our coast, that is the "blob". It represents an area of water about 2-3 C warmer than normal.

The blob developed last fall and early winter, as illustrated by the sea surface temperature anomaly maps for September 26, 2013 and January 23, 2014, shown below.

But why?

The warm blob developed last winter as a result of the unusual persistence of high pressure over the eastern Pacific. Here is difference from normal for sea level pressure for Sept to December 2013. WOW! A huge anomaly with the pressure over the northeast Pacific being over 6 millibars (aka hPa) above normal. Folks, that is a big anomaly. And it was associated with our dry fall and early winter last year.

Nick has analyzed the impacts of this high pressure area; one associated with far less storminess than normal (storms are generally associated with low pressure regions). With less storminess, there were fewer waves and less mixing of the upper Pacific, mixing that tends to bring up colder water from beneath the surface. Thus, the surface layer of the ocean ended up several degrees warmer than normal and this anomaly persisted into the spring and summer.

So now you know the origin of the blob: the impact of unusual fall high pressure. But how does that warm the air over us?

During the summer, the East Pacific High builds northward in the eastern Pacific and the air that reaches us on the typical summer day comes off the Pacific. To prove this, here is the trajectory of air ending over Seattle on August 29th. It was over the blob a few days earlier!

The temperature of the low-level air is greatly influenced by the sea surface temperature and thus warmer water tends to cause the air reaching us to warm. The temperature anomaly of the blog is 2-3C (roughly 4-5F) , which is quite similar to the degree of warming above normal this summer over much of the Northwest (see graphic)

A number of you have complained about the humidity being unusually high this summer. Blame the blob. Warmer air can acquire more water vapor than cooler air and the amount of water vapor air can hold increases VERY rapidly with temperature.

There is, of course, a lot of interest in whether the warm temperatures this summer were associated with global warming. It does not appear so. The warming was caused by anomalous high pressure over the eastern Pacific last fall and there is no reason to believe that has anything to do with warming the planet from the greenhouse gases mankind emits.

Russia Meteor Not Linked to Asteroid Flyby 02.15.13

Update: March 21, 2013

The large fireball (technically, called a "superbolide") observed on the morning of Feb. 15, 2013, in the skies near Chelyabinsk, Russia, was caused by a relatively small asteroid approximately 17 to 20 meters in size (about 18.6 to 21.9 yards) that entered Earth's atmosphere at high speed and at a shallow angle. In doing so, it released a tremendous amount of energy, fragmented at high altitude, and produced a shower of pieces of various sizes that fell to the ground as meteorites.

The fireball was observed not only by video cameras and low-frequency infrasound detectors, but also by U.S. government sensors. Information on the composition of the meteor was also derived from meteorite fragments found in the Chelyabinsk area. With this new data incorporated, the details of the impact have become clearer.

At 9:20:20 a.m. local time (3:20:20 UTC) the meteor entered Earth's atmosphere over the Kazakhstan/Russia border. As it descended through the upper atmosphere, it traveled northwest into Russia. The impactor's trajectory approached Earth along a direction that remained within 15 degrees of the direction of the sun. Asteroid detection telescopes cannot scan regions of the sky this close to the sun. During the atmospheric entry phase, an impacting object is both slowed and heated by atmospheric friction. In front of it, a bow shock develops where atmospheric gases are compressed and heated. Some of this energy is radiated to the object, causing it to ablate, and in most cases, break apart. Fragmentation increases the amount of atmosphere intercepted and so enhances ablation and atmospheric braking. The object disintegrates when the force from the unequal pressures on the front and back sides exceeds its tensile strength. This disruption, or disintegration, usually occurs around the time of maximum brightness.

Thirteen seconds after atmospheric entry, at 9:20:33 a.m. local time (03:20:33 UTC), the fireball, traveling at a velocity of 11.6 miles per second (18.6 kilometers per second), achieved its maximum brightness just south of Chelyabinsk, Russia, at an altitude of 14.5 miles (23.3 kilometers). The approximate effective diameter of the asteroid is estimated to be about 18 meters (about 19.7 yards), and its mass about 11,000 tons. Approximate total impact energy of the Chelyabinsk Fireball, in kilotons of TNT explosives (the energy parameter usually quoted for a fireball), is 440 kilotons. Note that these estimates of total energy, diameter and mass are very approximate. The Chelyabinsk event was an extraordinarily large fireball, the most energetic impact event recognized since the 1908 Tunguska blast in Russian Siberia.

The U.S. government sensor data also provides an approximate path for the Chelyabinsk impactor. A similar calculation can be made from analysis of video records of the event; both methods yield similar results. This path through the atmosphere reinforces that the fireball was not associated with asteroid 2012 DA14, which made a very close flyby of Earth just over 16 hours later. This is known because the two objects approached the Earth from completely different directions and had entirely different orbits around the sun.
