BURNETT: All right, Kyung. Thank you very much. And, obviously, at the core of this is that issue, because they asked for her name and she didn't provide it.

Joining me now, the former NYPD officer Bill Stanton, along with our commentator Van Jones.

All right. Let's start with this issue of the fact that she is eight months pregnant, Bill. They may not have known whether she was seven or eight. But she's clearly very pregnant. She does not appear to be a threat to officers, at least she's getting on her phone, right? I know you think it is crucial she turns to walk away. But she's not running away. She's not fleeing, she's not trying to hit them.

There are laws in 18 states that prevent police from handcuffing women in prison. This was an arrest, not actually in prison. But the question is the same: should officers have been more careful? Not put her on her stomach?

BILL STANTON, FORMER NYPD OFFICER: Well, listen, she is a pregnant woman and you always have to be deferential to a life inside that stomach. But there is culpability with the person, the woman there herself. If she would have remained calm -- now, granted, the law is the law. She doesn't have to give her ID. But shouldn't she have been cognizant that she is 8 months pregnant?

Give the ID and have your day in court afterwards. You know, that makes a lot -- that's common sense.

So, I'm not going on defend any cop that's hurting someone. But what happened here was an escalation that could have been prevented by that woman if she had just shown her ID.

BURNETT: Or even just said her name, Van. All they asked for was her last name.

VAN JONES, CNN POLITICAL COMMENTATOR: That's shameful. I had hoped after 24 hours of reflection and seeing the full video that this officer would have a different view.

There are three issues here. And they're all very clear. First of all, you do not have, in the state of California, you do not have to show ID an officer can tell you to pull your pants down. You don't have to do that either.

So, if somebody says, I don't want to pull my pants down, I don't want to show you my ID -- they cannot be arrested, period. So, we're talking about an unlawful arrest.

STANTON: So, Van, so you're driving. And you feel you stopped at a stop sign, and the car in back of you with lights and sirens. But you feel you stopped. Do you not stop? You just keep going?

JONES: No, you're required by law to stop if an officer tells you to stop.

STANTON: But you don't feel you -- you feel you stopped.

(CROSSTALK)

JONES: No, it's not about feeling. This is about the law. The law says you have to obey a lawful order from a police officer. Unfortunately, the law matters to me more than it does to you. The law also says you do not have to show ID.

JONES: Did you watch the whole video, sir, the whole --

STANTON: Yes. I saw all 11 minutes. And I saw two officers, not six, try and -- what she did was scream, yell, she crumbled to the ground, and by my eyes, trying to prevent her from hurting them and herself. Again, if she would have stayed calm, it was escalating. This did not have to happen.

And the issue of race, what you're doing and others like you, you're getting your wish. You're watching in all high crime areas, crime spikes up because if you're a police officer, specifically by what you're saying, white police officer, if you are going to be micromanaged and called a racist for just saying hello.

JONES: Shame on you.

STANTON: No, shame on you.

JONES: Shame on you.

First of all, you're saying in our country, that people should obey unlawful orders from police. If a police officer tells you to pull your pants down? Yes or no?

STANTON: You know what? Let's have the situation. Did he put drugs down his pants? Was he running away from the police with drugs? Did he have a gun? Did he have a gun in his pants, Van?

(CROSSTALK)

JONES: My point is this, there are lawful -- there are lawful orders and unlawful orders by the police.

The American Presidency Project

George W. Bush

XLIII President of the United States: 2001 - 2009

Remarks Honoring the 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup Champion

February 5, 2008

The President. You know, one of the things I love about NASCAR is not only are these great athletes, but they're socially minded folks. And Chandra and Jimmie and I met several times--one time at a place where the folks of NASCAR are putting something back into the community to help the less fortunate. In this case, it happened to be in a place called Victory Junction in North Carolina, and it was a fabulous experience. And I want to thank you all very much for taking your fame and lending it to help somebody in need. It's really what makes America a great place. And you're leaders on the track and leaders off the track.

Jimmie Johnson. Thank you very much.

Note: The President spoke at 1:09 p.m. in the Oval Office at the White House.

NARIM
Then it doesn't matter how I ask for asylum?

CARTER
Maybourne would love that. But you'd be working for him, on his terms.

NARIM
Then Omoc is correct. Your people will use our knowledge for war.

CARTER
It's not us. We are dealing with another part of our government, one that specialises in chronic paranoia.

NARIM
Like Sureeta. It's going to happen again.

CARTER
It doesn't have to…that's why I am here. Narim, I am hoping that you can convince Omoc to consider one of the other planets we've presented.

NARIM
Look, it's no use. He's right. If they are all as primitive or more primitive than you are, Sureeta could happen on any of them.

CARTER
I wish you would stop calling us primitive.

NARIM
I'm sorry. I only meant technologically. You are anything but primitive, Samantha. What your mind doesn't know, your heart fills in.

CARTER
I don't know what that means, exactly, but it's beautiful.

NARIM
Which is exactly what it means.

INT—VIEW OF HAMMOND'S OFFICE FROM THE BRIEFING ROOM

[Hammond is speaking on a red phone. View moves to Maybourne in the briefing room.]

DANIEL
Just what exactly do you hope to get from these people?

MAYBOURNE
Well, for one, superior weapons.

O'NEILL
They won't cooperate, you know.

MAYBOURNE
I assure you, Colonel, they will.

Encyclopædia Britannica

Huey Long

American politician

Huey Long, in full Huey Pierce Long (born Aug. 30, 1893, near Winnfield, La., U.S.—died Sept. 10, 1935, Baton Rouge, La.), flamboyant and demagogic governor of Louisiana and U.S. senator whose social reforms and radical welfare proposals were ultimately overshadowed by the unprecedented executive dictatorship that he perpetrated to ensure control of his home state.

In spite of an impoverished background, young Long managed to obtain enough formal schooling to pass the bar examination in 1915. He was politically ambitious and won election to the state railroad commission at age 25. In this post his calls for the equitable regulation of the state utility companies and his attacks on Standard Oil earned him widespread popularity. He ran for the Louisiana governorship in 1924 and was defeated, but in 1928 he won the governorship through the heavy support of the discontented rural districts. His picturesque if irreverent speech, fiery oratory, and unconventional buffoonery soon made him nationally famous, and he was widely known by his nickname, “Kingfish.” Long made a genuine contribution with an ambitious program of public works and welfare legislation in a state whose road system and social services had been sadly neglected by the wealthy elite that had long controlled the state government. Always the champion of poor whites, he effected a free-textbook law, launched a massive and very useful program of road and bridge building, expanded state university facilities, and erected a state hospital where free treatment for all was intended. He was opposed to excessive privileges for the rich, and he financed his improvements with increased inheritance and income taxes as well as a severance tax on oil—earning him the bitter enmity of the wealthy and of the oil interests.

Long’s folksy manner and sympathy for the underprivileged diverted attention from his ruthless autocratic methods. Surrounding himself with gangsterlike bodyguards, he dictated outright to members of the legislature, using intimidation if necessary. When he was about to leave office to serve in the U.S. Senate (1932), he fired the legally elected lieutenant governor and replaced him with two designated successors who would obey him from Washington. In order to fend off local challenges to his control in 1934, he effected radical changes in the Louisiana government, abolishing local government and taking personal control of all educational, police, and fire job appointments throughout the state. He achieved absolute control of the state militia, judiciary, and election and tax-assessing apparatus, while denying citizens any legal or electoral redress.

In the Senate (1932–35) he sought national power with a Share-the-Wealth program (“every man a king”), which was tempting to the Great Depression-shocked public. Had Long been able to unite the various nationwide radical movements, a private poll taken in the spring of 1935 estimated that he would have won up to four million votes in the next year’s presidential election, thus wielding a balance of power between the two major parties.

Long was at the height of his power when assassinated by Carl Austin Weiss, the son of a man whom he had vilified. The Long political dynasty was carried on by his brother, Earl K. Long, who served as governor (1939–40, 1948–52, 1956–60), and his son, Russell B. Long, who served in the U.S. Senate from 1948 to 1987.

Huey Long

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Huey Pierce Long, Jr. (August 30, 1893 – September 10, 1935), nicknamed The Kingfish, was an American politician who served as the 40th Governor of Louisiana from 1928 to 1932 and as a member of the United States Senate from 1932 until his assassination in 1935. A Democrat, he was an outspoken populist who denounced the rich and the banks and called for "Share the Wealth." As the political boss of the state he commanded wide networks of supporters and was willing to take forceful action. He established the political prominence of the Long political family.

Assassination

Long was shot a month after announcing that he would run for president. On the day of the shooting, September 8, 1935, Long was at the State Capitol attempting to oust a long-time opponent, Judge Benjamin Henry Pavy. "House Bill Number One", a re-redistricting plan, was Long's top priority. If it passed, Judge Pavy would be removed from the bench. At 9 p.m., the session was still going strong. Judge Pavy's son-in-law, Dr. Carl Weiss, had been at the State Capitol waiting to speak to Long. He tried to see him three times to talk to him but was brushed off each time in the hallway by Long and his bodyguards. At 9:20 p.m., just moments after the house passed the bill, Weiss approached Long for the third time and, according to the generally accepted version of events, fired a handgun at Long from four feet away, shooting him in the abdomen. Long's bodyguards returned fire, hitting Weiss 62 times and killing him. Long was rushed to the hospital but died two days later, September 10, 1935 at 4:10 AM. Long was 42 years old. His last words were, "God, don't let me die. I have so much to do."

Encyclopædia Britannica

Vladimir Zworykin

American engineer and inventor

Vladimir Zworykin, in full Vladimir Kosma Zworykin (born July 30, 1889, Murom, Russia—died July 29, 1982, Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.), Russian-born American electronic engineer and inventor of the iconoscope and kinescope television systems.

Zworykin studied at the St. Petersburg Institute of Technology, where from 1910 to 1912 he assisted physicist Boris Rosing in his experiments with a television system that consisted of a rotating mirror drum to scan an image and a cathode-ray tube to display it. He then studied at the Collège de France, in Paris and served during World War I in the Russian Signal Corps. He emigrated to the United States in 1919 and became a naturalized citizen in 1924. In 1920 he joined the Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Pittsburgh, but he left after a year to work in Kansas City for C&C Development Company, which had a patent for using high-frequency currents in oil refining. Zworykin was hired to test the invention but found that it was useless.

Zworykin returned to Westinghouse in 1923, and that year he filed a patent for an all-electronic television system, which had cathode-ray tubes for both transmitting and receiving images. (Other television systems such as that of Rosing relied on mechanical devices such as spinning disks and mirrored drums to capture and reproduce an image.) In 1924 he began building a television system based (with modifications to the camera tube) on his patent, and in 1925 he demonstrated an almost entirely electronic system for several Westinghouse executives, who were not impressed.

Westinghouse reassigned Zworykin to work on photoelectric cells. In late 1928 he was sent to Europe to examine television research being done in partnership with Westinghouse and the Radio Corporation of America (RCA). He was particularly impressed by the cathode-ray tube designed by Fernand Holweck and Pierre Chevallier at the Paris laboratory of French inventor Édouard Belin. The Holweck-Chevallier tube used electrostatic fields to focus the beam of electrons. Zworykin’s reenergized enthusiasm for the new tube and electronic television was not shared by most Westinghouse executives, but vice president Sam Kintner suggested that he meet with RCA vice president David Sarnoff. At their meeting in January 1929 Sarnoff asked Zworykin how much it would take to bring electronic television to market. Zworykin said two years and $100,000 (as it turned out, a gross underestimate), and Sarnoff persuaded Westinghouse to give Zworykin the necessary resources. By the end of the year, he had perfected his cathode-ray receiver, the kinescope, which had a picture large enough and bright enough for home viewing; however, his television system still used a mechanical device, a spinning mirror, as part of the transmission apparatus. Six kinescopes were built; Zworykin had one at his home, where late at night it received experimental television signals from Westinghouse’s radio station, KDKA, in Pittsburgh. In 1930 Westinghouse’s television research was transferred to RCA, and Zworykin became head of the television division at RCA’s Camden, New Jersey, laboratory.

In April 1930 Zworykin visited the San Francisco laboratory of inventor Philo Farnsworth at the behest of Farnsworth’s backers, who wanted to make a deal with RCA. Three years earlier Farnsworth had done the first successful demonstration of an entirely electronic television system. Zworykin was particularly impressed by Farnsworth’s transmission tube, the image dissector, and was inspired by its innovations to develop an improved camera tube, the iconoscope, for which he filed a patent in 1931. RCA kept Zworykin’s developments a secret, and only in 1933 was Zworykin able to announce the existence of the iconoscope. In 1939 RCA introduced regular electronic television broadcasting at the New York World’s Fair.

Zworykin’s other developments in electronics included innovations in the electron microscope. His electron image tube, sensitive to infrared light, was the basis for the sniperscope and snooperscope, devices first used in World War II for seeing in the dark. His secondary-emission multiplier was used in the scintillation counter. In later life Zworykin lamented the way that television had been abused to titillate and trivialize subjects rather than for the educational and cultural enrichment of audiences.

Named an honorary vice president of RCA in 1954, from then until 1962 Zworykin also served as director of the medical electronics centre of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (now Rockefeller University) in New York City. In 1966 the National Academy of Sciences awarded him the National Medal of Science for his contributions to the instruments of science, engineering, and television and for his stimulation of the application of engineering to medicine. He was also founder-president of the International Federation for Medical Electronics and Biological Engineering, a recipient of the Faraday Medal from Great Britain (1965), and a member of the U.S. National Hall of Fame from 1977.

Zworykin wrote Photocells and Their Application (1934; with E.D. Wilson), Television: The Electronics of Image Transmission (1940; with G.A. Morton), Electron Optics and the Electron Microscope (1945; with G.A. Morton, E.G. Ramberg, J. Hillier, and A.W. Vance), Photoelectricity and Its Application (1949; with E.G. Ramberg), and Television in Science and Industry (1958; with E.G. Ramberg and L.E. Flory).

She described how she had accidently showed up or something like that, but I wasn't buying it. Bbc Lights 50 Candles For Television Birth

November 02, 1986 By Ray Moseley, Chicago Tribune.

LONDON — On the afternoon of Monday, Nov. 2, 1936, about 100 men and women took their places in an old Victorian exhibition hall in north London to witness a miraculous birth.

A few hundred other people, impatient and excited, waited at scattered locations around London for the same event.

It was the birth of what the British Broadcasting Corp. calls the world`s first regular high-definition television service.

In a real sense, as far as those present were concerned, it was the birth of the television age. After nearly a half century of theorizing and experimentation, television had become technically feasible in 1931 and the Germans had begun a regular service in Berlin on March 22, 1935. But the quality was poor: 180 lines to the screen, compared with the BBC`s 405. The Americans wouldn`t get around to TV until 1939.

PROGRESS: The “Kinetophone” — talking moving pictures are at last a reality

Posted on January 4, 1913

Yesterday the “Wizard of Menlo Park,” Thomas Edison, demonstrated his latest invention: the “Kinetophone,” the product of years of experimentation to produce “a machine synchronizing the motion picture and the phonograph” to create talking motion pictures. His demonstration was ably summarized by the New York Times. Read the whole thing.

One of the tests of the invention included a recording of a speech by an actor speculating on the possible uses of this marvelous new invention:

To what vast purpose it can attain can only be guessed. Consider, for instance, the historic value of a Kinetophone production of George Washington if it were possible to show it now, and you will realize the splendid opportunity of future generations to study the great men of to-day. The political orator can appeal to thousands while remaining at his own fireside; the world’s greatest statesmen, actors, singers can be seen and heard in even the smallest hamlet, not only to-day, but 100 years hence. In fact, there seems to be no end to the possibilities of this greatest invention of the wizard of sound and sight, Thomas A. Edison.

Twilight Zone (TV Series)

It's a Good Life (1961)

Quotes

[first lines]

Narrator: [Opening Narration] Tonight's story on The Twilight Zone is somewhat unique and calls for a different kind of introduction. This, as you may recognize, is a map of the United States, and there's a little town there called Peaksville. On a given morning not too long ago, the rest of the world disappeared and Peaksville was left all alone. Its inhabitants were never sure whether the world was destroyed and only Peaksville left untouched or whether the village had somehow been taken away. They were, on the other hand, sure of one thing: the cause. A monster had arrived in the village. Just by using his mind, he took away the automobiles, the electricity, the machines - because they displeased him - and he moved an entire community back into the dark ages - just by using his mind. Now I'd like to introduce you to some of the people in Peaksville, Ohio. This is Mr. Fremont. It's in his farmhouse that the monster resides. This is Mrs. Fremont. And this is Aunt Amy, who probably had more control over the monster in the beginning than almost anyone. But one day she forgot. She began to sing aloud. Now, the monster doesn't like singing, so his mind snapped at her, turned her into the smiling, vacant thing you're looking at now. She sings no more. And you'll note that the people in Peaksville, Ohio, have to smile. They have to think happy thoughts and say happy things because once displeased, the monster can wish them into a cornfield or change them into a grotesque, walking horror. This particular monster can read minds, you see. He knows every thought, he can feel every emotion. Oh yes, I did forget something, didn't I? I forgot to introduce you to the monster. This is the monster. His name is Anthony Fremont. He's six years old, with a cute little-boy face and blue, guileless eyes. But when those eyes look at you, you'd better start thinking happy thoughts, because the mind behind them is absolutely in charge. This is the Twilight Zone.

Lord Porter of Luddenham

Nobel Prizewinner who worked on high-speed chemical reactions and defended public spending on scientific research

Anthony Tucker

Tuesday 3 September 2002 06.34 EDT Last modified on Tuesday 10 September 2002 06.34 EDT

One of the most innovative scientists of the 20th century, Lord Porter of Luddenham, who has died aged 81, shared the 1967 Nobel Chemistry Prize for his pioneering work with Ronald Norrish at Cambridge on high-speed, light-driven chemical reactions. It might seem that chemical reactions taking a few millionths of a second or even less are remote from everyday affairs: they are not.

Underpinning George Porter's science was a bedrock of everyday reality, a profound concern for the future of mankind and for the interlinked biological and physical systems of the planet. He knew - and said as often as possible - that the sun and the chemistry of life on earth are inseparable, and that mankind must learn to make creative use of sunlight or perish.

Occasionally, he went further, condemning research imbalance and, in this context, pointing out that if sunbeams could be used as weapons, then, long ago, governments would have poured money into light-driven physics and chemistry.

Sunbeams cannot and governments did not. Yet with a career based on the triggering and interpretation of high-speed chemical reactions by means of very short pulses of light (flash photolysis), it was inevitable that Porter would, in the end, bring his knowledge and skills to bear on the photo-chemist's holy grail, an understanding of the mechanisms by which carbohydrates are synthesised from carbon dioxide and water in the green leaves of plants.

In many ways this is the ultimate high-speed, light-driven chemical reaction, remarkable in that wherever it occurs in nature, the desired forward reaction (synthesis) is not accompanied by the theoretically expected back reaction.

Coupled with enzyme (catalyst) efficiency about a thousand times that of the best industrial processes, photosynthesis is distinguished as an extraordinary phenomenon deserving of special study, quite apart from it being by far the most important chemical reaction on earth. It has turned out, repeatedly, to be one of the most difficult to unravel.

It was therefore not surprising that Sir George (he was knighted in 1972), who sought challenge and whose research team concentrated on important light-driven chemical reactions during his 20 years as director and resident professor of the Royal Institution of Great Britain (1966-85), accepted the chairmanship of a new centre for photochemistry and photosynthesis at Imperial College, London, in 1987.

From the 1960s, Porter had argued that if research were to unravel and harness photosynthesis and thus resolve the looming energy problems of the planet, then, provided that population could be stabilised, mankind might at last look forward to a truly sustainable future. He was being practical in the proper technical sense, although he recognised that his optimism embodied elusive ideals that, however well research went, might easily become tarnished before the transitions he sought could be realised.

When his directorship of the Royal Institution came to an end, he became president of the Royal Society (1985-90). He thus gained a powerful platform from which to express his views on research and, initially, to condemn the downward spiral of support for fundamental studies typical of successive Thatcher administrations.

Porter's views on science were crystal clear: its ultimate purpose was to understand ourselves and our place in the universe. Far from being remote from everyday life, this purpose was primitive; every child asks questions of the kind that scientists ask, he said.

It followed that he had a great interest in young people and the way they might be encouraged toward an understanding of science; in the special educational provisions required by gifted children; and in the need to improve the level of scientific understanding of the general public. In the Royal Society under Porter, they went hand in hand with critical studies of national science policy.

As an important voice in a growing uproar, Porter condemned the government for developing a policy under which the pursuit of knowledge was diminishing, not by oversight or as an essential measure of economy, but in deference to the pursuit of affluence. Individual, innovative science essential to the long-term future was being neglected as a result of a massive government-driven distortion of basic support toward short-term industrially "relevant" research.

Porter was emphatic and courageously outspoken: industry should do its own research and a lot more of it. The pursuit of knowledge in universities should not be allowed to suffer simply to make good industrial shortcomings. The government must realise that abrupt changes of policy and imposed reorganisations are far more damaging than useful.

In the 1970s, the traditional weight within government of Royal Society views was said to have diminished, yet, within a year of his appointment, national science policy changed. Core sciences and the pursuit of knowledge were given new support alongside a declaration that public funds were to be redeployed toward strategic research and that industry should support its own market research.

At this time, however, new problems arose. Normal public apathy toward science became antipathy. Scientists were blamed for global pollution, accused of playing God by manipulating genes, and of breaching moral codes by interfering with human embryos.

These difficult issues were all faced squarely and clearly by Porter, who sympathised with and even encouraged public concern. Science must keep its house in order. But he was also concerned because, all too often, science was being used as a scapegoat by those truly responsible for the problems that arose from the inadequate control of technology.

Porter was born in Stainforth, North Yorkshire. He went to Leeds University as an Ackroyd scholar in 1938. The war intervened, and, during his final year, although he was already showing a great gift for the study of chemical kinetics, he took a special course in radio physics which enabled him to go into marine radar. His involvement with physics and with short-wave propagation and reflection were to prove crucial to the later development of his career.

In 1945, he went to Cambridge University as a post-graduate research student with Professor Ronald Norrish, and began studies of the very elusive short-lived intermediaries (free radicals) in photochemical reactions. These disappear, as it were, almost as they are born, yet if they could be visualised step by step, they would reveal the route by which the reaction took place.

Porter came up with the idea of using pulses of light whose duration was shorter than the lifetime of the free radicals. Would chemical systems "pinged", and their spectra resolved on an equally short time-base, reveal transient and hitherto invisible participants in their reactions?

They did: flash photolysis was rewarded by a Nobel Prize. It has revealed, with successively shorter light pulses, chemical transients that are crucial to reactions but whose lifespan is only a fraction of a billionth of a second. This is the timescale of living biochemistry. Porter opened a window onto a hitherto quite impenetrable world.

Leoben: Yeah, ever since I got here, something in the air affects my allergies. You always keep me in front of you. Military training, right? Never turn your back on a stranger, that kind of thing? Suspicion and distrust, that's - that's military life, right?

Adama: So you're a gun dealer/philosopher, I take it, right?

Leoben: (laughs) I'm an observer of human nature. When you get right down to it, humanity is not a pretty race. I mean, we're only one step away from beating each other with clubs like savages fighting over scraps of meat. Maybe the Cylons are God's retribution for our many sins. What if God decided he made a mistake? And he decided to give souls to another creature, like the Cylons?

Adama: God didn't create the Cylons. Man did. And I'm pretty sure we didn't include a soul in the programming.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: Miniseries (2003)

Adama: You know, when we fought the Cylons, we did it to save ourselves from extinction. But we never answered the question: why? Why are we as a people worth saving?
